This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 31st day of January, 1936, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [1089], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. [1089] and Hugh Lynn Cayce.]
Time of Reading 12:05 to 12:25 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Ky. (Body and enquiring mind. Questions regarding mental and physical activity.)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [1089], this we have had before.
-
As we find, in the general physical forces of the body there are shown TENDENCIES towards SOME improvements. There should be kept a CONSISTENT application of those influences that have been indicated for the mucous membranes of the head and throat; and NOT use them AS rote!
-
For, as we have indicated, there is within the innate forces, the innate developments of the soul-forces of the ENTITY, that wherein the entity may ITSELF become a healer; and one with the abilities to arouse within its fellow man the consciousness that IS the true and all-healing influence in a physical body.
-
Then, USE and APPLY same upon SELF!
-
For it, the influence, is innate - and seeks manifestation. That it approaches, it appears to self in varied forms or manners - whether in that which may be classed or determined in self as being constructive, or even DETRIMENTAL to the influence of the body or the mind - is not to be wondered at.
-
For what is bad? Good gone wrong, or something else? It is good MISAPPLIED, misconstrued, or used in a SELFISH manner - for the satisfying of a desire within self.
-
And so is sin, so is illness; a lack of at-onement with a COORDINANT, COOPERATIVE force of a LIVING influence that may - through THIS entity - become such a marvellous force for good, for a channel of manifestation of GOOD among its fellow man.
-
The LORD is willing. Art thou, then, willing to accept and be guided, and be directed, by that influence in thy experience?
-
How, then, would ye seek to know?
-
For thou art not in error, but rather in the slough of doubt, of fear. And as the mental self seeks to justify its activity in any direction - and seeks excuses, what is thine?
-
That thou art not understood, or that others do not understand? WHY? Hast thou told it to Jesus? HE knows; He understands! And if He understands, then what care ye? Or dost thou consider what others think, rather than what He may give thee day by day?
-
In thy material applications, seek ye FIRST the LORD WHILE HE MAY BE FOUND! For He is ABOVE price - whether of body, of mind, or even purse. But know that thou art His and He IS THINE, and that He beareth witness WITH THEE! not only in that ye think but that ye DO to thy fellows, thy neighbor - yea, to thy foe! to those that despitefully use you, that say all manner of hard things about you! Did they not the same about Him?
-
Ye say, “This is generality - and not to me, but to anyone.” Behind what are ye hiding? Thine own conceit, that you are different? No different from any other soul, seeking - and if thou art found worthy thou may occupy even a seat of glory; for thou wilt make thy body, thy mind, a means, a WAY, an expression of His glory!
-
Shall you return to school, to home, to self, to what?
-
Rather SEPARATE self from home, from school, from thy surroundings. PROVE thyself WORTHY of a channel through which He may speak! For until He, thy Savior, thy Christ, hath confidence and patience in thee, hast thou aught in thyself?
-
PROVE thyself! For He IS WITHIN thee!
-
Return to school or to associations only AS thy determination is made as to whether thou wilt fulfil thy abilities, or be caught upon the flood of circumstance - and dabble here, and dabble there, and be dissatisfied ever, and finally come to the conclusion, “There is nothing in anything” for there’s nothing in self!
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) In order to undertake the mental readjustments necessary for my development, would it be advisable for me to return to school or stay out for a time? (A) This must be determined, as indicated, IN self! First, as we would give:
How hast thou seen? Consider a moment. When the spirit of purpose, of understanding, entered into thy Ideal, thy Master, did He continue in school; did He continue among the walks of men? or did He SEPARATE himself to KNOW himself; being able then to withstand the wiles of the devil and the besetting things that came about?
Art thou stronger than He? Dost thou consider that the ways of the world, the satisfying of the appetites of the body, or what people will say, are of more import or importance in thy experience than to prove thy self?
- (Q) If I stay out, how can I best employ myself during this period, considering both mental and financial adjustments? (A) What is it thou fearest in thyself? What people will say, or what ye will find by looking within self?
Best to separate self, as we have given. If thou canst separate thyself in the manual labors, fine! If thou canst separate thyself by appealing to those closest in nature, fine! But CHOOSE!
For, as has been given of old, “There is this day set before thee life and death, good and evil - Choose thou!”
- We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 2/20/36 [1089] wrote EC saying he had thought of going back to Father Joseph E. Welch who had helped him so much previously but his death was announced in the paper that afternoon. He had thought of going to his uncle’s but learned that he also had died two weeks ago. He had written to his cousin in another part of the state who had sent him a newspaper clipping about hordes of people being out of work, etc.
R2. 3/10/36 EC’s letter to [1089]:
”…Had wondered what had become of you, but found your letter of the 20th here when we came back from Detroit; glad to hear from you, though would guess from what you say, you are not in the most optimistic frame of mind. Everything seems to break just before you get there, but isn’t that the natural law? And after all, should it not be that way for the best for man? For, when changes come in our lives we should stop and consider well what we are undertaking. We have a wonderful example in the temptation of the Master, and it did not happen when he was 21, but 30. And then he went apart, was alone, and after forty days of fasting, then the temptation. Are we greater than our Master?
“Of course, [1089], you are at that place in your experience when you must make decisions for yourself - can’t anyone do it for you, for when they did, you would have the same old excuse that Adam had, ‘The woman thou gavest me gave me to eat’ or my friend or this or that persuaded me and I did that. You will have to listen to the still, small voice within.
“Sure, there is a reason for everything. Everything happens by a law and we can know that law as a law of LOVE, will we but apply ourselves in that way ‘for he has not willed that any should perish but has, with every temptation prepared a way of escape’ and ‘He is the same yesterday and forever’ and if we are his we may walk and talk with Him.
“Better take the school of experience, a hard teacher, but a very thorough one, and one we are not likely to forget soon. Either get you a job carrying papers, selling shoes, or one that will force you to meet people, but don’t look for the easy one. Choose rather the hard one that has some definite goal at the end and keep that goal in sight. Work toward that end, keeping the standard always before you. Measure everything by that standard and rather keep the consideration in your mind and ponder them in your heart. Have your secret moments alone when you talk with HIM all about it all, and he has never turned a deaf ear to anyone, no matter what their associations were; whether they collected taxes from a people who thought the tax all wrong, and the people that collected “them worse, or whether they directed soldiers, and they about him thought him all wrong for being a soldier or whatnot, for the law is ‘When ye call I will HEAR’ and when we begin to feel ‘because of my position in life, I can’t do this or that’ we but excuse ourselves, and fall away into the errors of our fathers of old.
“Go to the country, is my suggestion. But if that doesn’t suit you, why it is the place to go, but there you might improve your body and mind. Oh yes, many can and do say that with an education, why bury yourself in the dirt. Well the best educated man of all time of old found it well to care for sheep even though he was educated in all the mysteries of the Egyptians, and there near to nature he learned about GOD, and it was there he was called, and not in the house of plenty and we just can’t improve on God’s plans and ways of working with men. We think so at times, but we only fool ourselves, and Solomon said they that do such are not wise, but foolish. The fourth dimension, well why not see that in the third and be able to use the advantages of same? For, nothing is impossible with HIM and if we are his, who can be against us? No one that matters but our own selves.
“Or to the city - I personally got off to some start in Louisville. Yet, I would never advise one to undertake it unless something within themselves calls for just that.
“Listen, [1089], Thomas [House] is starting the work with the preparations that have been given here; will need some sort of help. Can you fit in there? If so, why not ask him for such a place. You can find out what he will need and is as good a shot as any if this country and environs would answer to your needs, for after all, it isn’t going to be this or that place, but rather for what purpose ye enter in. We see a good example in Saul, a fine mule driver and a wonderful prophet, but a poor king. But what is the promptings of thy heart, what is thy standard?
“Perhaps you will say I have here, only beat about the bush and haven’t said one thing that is definite. But you listen, my boy. Knowledge of God is a growth. You know the way, you have a workable knowledge, but are you willing to put into practice in your own life that you know? No one can make that decision for you nor tell you in what particular spot to put it to work; that you alone can answer. For, you well know God cannot save you unless you want to be saved, and if you want to be it is up to you and to act that way, literally, personally, spiritually. The triune exists for it is a three dimensional world, you know.
“If I have been vague, don’t fall out with me. Know this: There is no one that thinks more of you than I - possible few that realize the possibilities that are within you, but the working out of the usefulness of those abilities are alone with you. God is willing, but is [1089]?
“Let me hear from you real often. Know if there is ever anything that I can do knowingly, am only too anxious to do it.
“All are pretty fair here; am feeling a lot better myself. I still have a spell now and then, but am working out of it with the suggestions that have been given. I hope your father is feeling lots better. There must be a source of the infection that causes the neuritis. It is, as you know, a symptom and not a disease of itself. He should be able to find it by taking stock of self and then relieve it. How is your mother and Aunt […]? Give them my love. Take care of yourself. You have a great work to do, and it is time that you were about your Father’s business; the same old thing that Moses said to his people in the 30th chapter of Deuteronomy; that Joshua said in his last admonition; that Jesus said when He was ready to depart; that John says in the last chapter of Revelation, ‘today will ye but hear his voice.’ Then do something about it…”
R3. 3/15/36 [1089] wrote questions to HLC which HLC answered 6/19/36 under 1089-6 Reports.
R4. 5/1/36 Mr. [1089] wrote that he hadn’t had the nerve to write sooner, since he had done nothing to report:
”…However, I know one thing: If I didn’t know what I found out from the readings, I would probably have departed from this earth before now… I guess my feelings are always at the tips of my fingers, but what people do say is frightful to me. The peculiar thing to me is that I never have said anything about anything to anyone except the family and yet people say and hail me as a ‘socialist’ [“Someone mentioned spiritualist, thinking of your work, and someone else misinterpreted it ‘socialist’.”] - ‘crazy’ and other things too silly to mention… Concerning sex relationship, people of my own sex affect me almost to distraction. What must I do in order to make myself attracted to the opposite sex? Would it be advisable to change my present environment? If so, suggest a location where I will have the greatest opportunity to gain. What is the proper attitude to take towards my religion? How must I feel when in company with people who are antagonistic towards me? What is the cause of my always having a quivering feeling?…”
R5. 6/12/36 [1089] submitted other questions.
R6. 6/16/36 [1089] obtained 1089-6.
