Date: 2/14/1938 Sex: M Age: 22 ReadingID: 6267
This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 14th day of February, 1938, in accordance with request made by the self, Mr. [1089], cousin of Edgar Cayce, $20 Full Period Reading on Sponsorship of Mrs. Josephine L. B. Macsherry, Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc. Mr. [1089] is privileged to contribute small amounts regularly to the Association in order to Sponsor a Reading for another who is unable to pay the full amount at once.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:20 to 11:40 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Kentucky. (Body and enquiring mind, who seeks information, advice and guidance as to his mental, material and spiritual welfare, to help him get straightened out and proceed with his development in the way he should. Ques.)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [1089]; this we have had before; together with the advice, the counsel that has been given the entity through these channels; and the manner in which the entity has attempted to apply such in the experience.
-
As has been indicated oft, the entity becomes too easily discouraged; allowing the things and conditions of the moment to become superlative in the desires and the wishes; and lets then that inclination for such to become paramount to everything else in the experience.
-
These then bring about, with the general experiences that have become and are a part of the entity as a whole, periods when the entity becomes oppressed; and begins to condemn self; FORGETTING that in condemning self there is that giving of expression which belittles the divine within.
-
To be sure, circumstances and environs would not for the moment appear to be materially consistent with the advice or counsel that might be given - in some directions; but when the physical conditions are taken into consideration and all of those inclinations that have just been pointed out, WE would advise that the body - as soon as possible - seek a companion, ASSUME the obligations of such.
-
Thus the sex life as well as the imaginative and the duties that go with such a union, that to the entity carries and will carry the obligations of every nature, will be more in keeping with that which will build the better conditions in an economic, in a mental, in a spiritual manner in the experience.
-
This, to be sure, will require that there be at least partially the economic security, by the entity engaging in direct activities from which remuneration may be expected in at least a way and manner as to make for the assurance for the obligations thus taken on by such activities.
-
These as we find are in keeping with those things that will be, all things considered, the better circumstances in the experience of the entity in the present.
-
As to what channels, as to what directions - as to what activities the seeking of employment may take, KEEP that ye HAVE in HAND! until there is the way opened, by the preparation of self in the directions that will open with assurances that will come by the GROWTH of self in taking on responsibilities, DOING those things that are known to be in keeping with the better forces for all concerned.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Considering my present conditions financial and otherwise what should be my best move for development? (A) As has just been indicated, taking all into consideration, the marriage and the obligations - even under the economic conditions - WILL bring about more stability, more activity in the correct lines than in any channel in the present.
-
(Q) Would it be well for this entity, [1089], to become affiliated with the Health Home Remedies Corp.? (A) This is not well, as there is not sufficient economic security for the assurance necessary to the entity for the activity.
-
(Q) What field of healing should I enter? (A) As has been indicated again and again, these are MENTAL - NOT material!
-
(Q) Is there any infection in my blood or in my lungs? (A) No.
-
(Q) If there is no conflict in the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and the belief in reincarnation, why is it that I cannot find a coordination between the two? (A) This depends, to be sure, upon the outlook.
If this is not in keeping with that which answers within self, then reject any that would make for a difference in thy religious beliefs or tenets.
They ARE the same.
Read and study for self what Jesus said about same.
-
(Q) What method is best suited for this entity in preparing for periods of meditation? (A) PURIFY self; as in ANY manner that is in keeping with that as would to the mental self separate self from WORLDLY things. Enter in thy inner chamber, thine own conscience, and there pray in secret to the Father that heareth in secret; and He will answer thee openly.
-
(Q) Any further advice for the entity at this time? (A) Work and labor whereunto thou hast been called into service for thy Lord, thy Master; knowing that as has so oft been given, as ye do it to the least of thy brethren ye do it to thy Lord and thy God.
It is the little things that make up the life’s experience, the associations. Be true to self, self-consciousness, and ye will not be false to others.
- We are through for the present.

R1. 2/14/38 GD’s note to Sponsor [Josephine L. B. Macsherry]:
“Young man 23 years old; is what the psychologists call a homosexualist, and has been through torment during past few years. His first readings two years ago said that such reactions were psychic abilities trying to express, and that he should seek guidance from within through meditation. It also said he was Zebedee in the period of the Master’s sojourn, and did not take advantage of the opportunities for accepting and living His teachings. He has been brought up a strict Catholic; his family wanted him to become a priest. He has a desire to believe in reincarnation but can’t reconcile it to what he has been taught for so long. His reading said if he allowed the psychic abilities to manifest he would be able to HEAL by the laying on of hands. I trust the carrying out of THIS reading will give him the stability he needs. Will let you know further.”
R2. 2/20/38 [1089]‘s letter to EC:
”…I have been trying to ‘digest’ the reading. There is no doubt but that it is clear and specific. Of course, I am indeed surprised that it suggested marriage as soon as possible. That in itself is no easy problem, especially when I have no ‘prospects.’ Suppose I must start searching…”
[GD’s note: In the next year [1089] referred Mrs. [1577] for a Physical reading; also requested Check Readings for his family and helped to nurse them, including especially his mother, [1690] and his grandmother, Mrs. [1181].]
R3. 2/20/39 [1089]‘s letter to EC:
”…For quite a while I have been realizing that next year will be 1940. And again I am going to exert more effort than ever before to start anew. What do you think of my being called Dr. [1089] - chiropractor or osteopath? I think I could be a good one. Which do you think would be best for me to study? In a few years I will have the responsibility of my parents on my shoulders and by that time I will have assumed the obligations of a wife, and with all that I think it is necessary that I be capable of earning a living… No doubt it is a good field and also a good way of helping people. Write me in detail what you think…”
R4. 2/23/39 EC’s letter to [1089]:
”…Glad to have yours of the 20th and as you seem anxious, will try and reply at once. I haven’t forgotten - once or twice in my life - I tried to appeal to some of those I thought the most of in the family to help me decide what to try and make out of my life and most haven’t answered me as yet. So, while what I say may have little weight, but here it is; use it as you see fit. For, like everything else, it requires that there be an answering something within yourself.
“There is no, or few at least, professions where one may do as much good in as being a doctor. So, it is a most worthy desire for those who are mentally, socially and spiritually equipped for same. All of these qualifications, am sure you have. Whether you have the sticktuativeness or not depends on your own self. The D.O. has a longer time to study, I believe, so is more honored in some states. The chiropractor is just as well thought of in some states, but in most cases it is the man after all. It is hard work, either of them and takes a lot of money to graduate, but you can make it. For, if you can get half enough for the first year, you can borrow from the government or school sources for the rest of the four to six years it takes to equip yourself.
“All the power to you, do you decide to do this and assure you will be glad to help you in any way I can.
“Hope everyone at home is getting adjusted to the loss; trust your mother is feeling much better. Give all my love, and if I haven’t said as much as you would like for me to have said, write me about it again…”
[GD’s note: 3/21/39 [1089] wrote a very discouraging letter; he had not been able to get assistance for the chiropractic school; he was tired of listening to other people’s trouble, etc.]
R5. 3/24/39 EC’s letter to [1089]:
”…Maybe I shouldn’t try and write you just now, but if not now, I don’t know when 1 will have an opportunity. But remember, [1089], when life’s clouds are darkest HE is nearest to you. He did not come to save or direct the self-righteous, but those that are troubled just as you are now - that you are given an opportunity is self-evident even to you in all your worry about material things, as well as social and economic and spiritual things. But it is within yourself. It isn’t as if you had no mind, or were halt or maimed. I know how all those things have gone through your mind, no doubt. You have at times wondered why you didn’t have TB or didn’t break a leg or crack your head so that you might have just pity from someone, or be looked after in some way by the mighty ones who seem to have all the money, all the fun there is in life. I think I know just how you feel, for I have experienced just such myself - reproach yourself. For you know your mother needs things and you seem to be doing nothing about it. Yet she is striving, working, worrying each day using what little strength she has to do the best she can - disappointed in you - in life, in everything, yet struggles on. There is no one that can tell you what move to make, [1089], just you pay and pray about it. HE hasn’t forgotten you ever. When life’s darkest clouds are near, HE draws nearer also. Keep on praying, but at the same time use every avenue that presents itself for work at something, anything to help matters in every direction. It should be a good time now for new clothes for someone - keep working at it if nothing else presents itself just now, or anything else that comes to hand, but keep on trying. Don’t give up, for you are already beaten when you do that, and God surely has contempt for the shirker. I don’t mean to be preaching at you at all. You know that. You are too much like myself in so many ways, for I have never been anything but an almost all my life, yet have kept trying; very poorly many times questioned by everyone always, and yet there are hundreds thst think I am a pretty good sort of a fellow. You have all the makings, too, of a real man; the blood, the appearance, the personality, the education. Then just do it. Why, even now had I had your education where might I not have gone. But I have dug in very feebly. It is true. I’ve read and reread the old book until many think I am not so bad after all. So can you. Know I am willing to help and encourage you any way possible, but you alone can and must do the do. Oh yes, I know you have heard that a thousand times. You hear it in your mind as a dingdong. But what to do you can’t find the way, then again I say pray about it. Remember how poor old Jacob wrestled with the angel all night and would not let HIM go until he gave him a blessing. Have you ever tried that? God hasn’t changed a bit. HE is just as anxious that you make a success out of your life as you are to make it - and cannot, will not be more anxious than you, and will help all that you will help yourself.
“This isn’t what I wanted to say, [1089], but am sure you know just what I mean, and this is not just words, words, words. But it’s the real you looking at yourself. Then get busy and keep at it.
“Write me often, [1089]. I’m always glad to hear. Give my love to your mother. See [715]. She depends on you a great deal. Don’t let her down, for you are letting yourself down when you let someone else down that you might help…”
[GD’s note: [1089]‘s next letters are about the family and their health, saying that his mother, [1690], and his aunt, [715], are both better, etc.]
R6. 7/11/40 [1089]‘s sister [1306] wrote that [1089] “has a wonderful job selling insurance.” [GD’s note: He had prior to that been working in a shoe store.]
R7. 7/27/41 [1089]‘s letter:
”…Suppose you know that I am in the Navy - like it fine. This is a grand place [Great Lakes, Ill.]. Was on the beach this P.M. and thought of you. Signed up in the Reserve which is for four years plus duration of emergency. Got rating of Storekeeper 3rd class…”
R8. 12/1/41 [1089] wrote that he was greatly concerned over illness of his sister [1306]‘s little son. “I think so often of your constant help to us and also of our apparent ungratefulness. Believe me, in our souls is the deepest gratitude and sincere appreciation for your unlimited generosity… I’ve tried to adjust myself to the uncertainty of events in military life. Of course, that is true in civilian life but as a rule, a civilian knows whether he is going some place or not. We never know that here. From what the boys write who have been transferred, this station must be the cream of the crop.
“Looks as though all of us will have a taste of salt water before long. Suppose however that this war is a means for us to contribute for a greater appreciation of peace…”
R9. 5/15/43 [1089]‘s letter:
“I volunteered for transfer with no idea of just being sent forty-five miles north of Great Lakes. My work here will be of an entirely different nature. All my previous work was in a personnel office and later in the pay office or disbursing office. Here (as storekeeper first class) I will work in a warehouse dealing with the receipt, custody and issuing of material furnished by the Navy and supplied to the Maritime Commission for use in the construction of ships… May I beg of you to pray for me that my entire past will actually be buried and that I will be given sufficient grace to live just a normal, simple and useful life…” [4/27/43 His mother, Mrs. [1690], had written: ”…He is a fine boy and good to us…”]
R10. 9/3/43 [1089]‘s mother’s letter: ”…[1089] is at sea and so far I hear from him every week…”
R11. 1/1/44 [1089]‘s letter:
”…Want you to know that I am thinking of you and wishing each of you God’s blessings for this New Year. In my humble and feeble way I also wish to thank you for what you mean to me and my family… By not being in position to contact our families when we desire causes a great deal of anxiety and the only remedy for that is trust and prayer. Christianity should certainly have a greater meaning to all men by the time this war is over. That could be called one of the ‘fortunes’ of war…”
R12. 1/31/44 EC wrote [1089] about having heard of the birth of [1089]‘s sister [1352]‘s baby girl:
”…There will possibly be quite a bit of rivalry between the boys [[1306]‘s boys, [2299] and [3634]] and the girl. I doubt if the girl will come out second best. It seems that the suggestions as were given [for [1352]] proved to be very helpful, as I judge from what your mother [1690] and [1306] wrote me… Do let me hear from you when you have the opportunity, and do keep in touch with them at home. Had a letter from [Aunt] [715] the other day telling me how much she missed you…”
R13. 1/21/72 Questionnaire was sent via Rosi Hood under Dr. Charles Thomas Cayce’s supervision.
R14. 2/1/72 Envelope was returned postmarked THAT DATE, saying DECEASED.
R15. 2/7/72 GD’s note: I talked with a mutual acquaintance who told me that he had seen [1089]‘s death notice in the paper some years ago.
