This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 8th day of May, 1936, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [1113], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 3:50 to 4:10 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, N.Y. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have those desires and those conditions about this body, [1113].
-
Now, as we find, there are rather those conditions of which the body should be warned; and the tendencies that are apparent that would bring about those conditions necessary for giving such warnings, rather than any definite conditions that would be as apparent in the present.
-
These are conditions, then, as we find them with this body, [1113]:
-
THE BLOOD SUPPLY, this indicates a full flow, an activity that is good throughout, save as a tendency towards too great an amount of fat, or fatty portions in the body; and those conditions that disturb the body at times when long or continued activity on the feet.
-
These are the conditions in the circulation and the effect of same upon the glands about the lower portion of the torso and the conditions that this increase of weight or fat produces within the lungs, the heart and the condition between heart and liver.
-
If the proper precautions are taken, these are NOT disturbances that should make for any great anxiety. For the vitality and the resistances are good.
-
THE NERVE REACTIONS ARE GOOD, the responses as through both the central nervous system and the sympathetics or the vegetative system are good.
-
IN THE ORGANS OF THE BODY, there may be taken some precautions as to those effects that these disturbances of a nature might produce, or pressures that might produce incoordination - if the proper precautions are not taken.
These to the eyes, to the ears, to the throat, to the whole of the sensory forces. Pressures especially upon the glands through those portions of the body as indicated make for a strain, sympathetically, upon the organs of the sensory forces.
-
If precautions are taken, though, if there are the considerations of all portions of the body, these should not give a great deal of trouble; and we should keep an equal balance throughout the activities.
-
FIRST, THEN, WE WOULD GIVE THESE AS SUGGESTIONS FOR THE BODY IN ITS PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:
-
Do not burn the candle at both ends; that is, do not DRIVE self too strenuously. Rather is it more advisable that the body budget its time for recuperation, for activities in these directions that make for keeping the bodily forces, the mental forces - yea, and the spiritual forces, in an ACTIVE force or active manner without making too great a strain upon ANY of them.
-
Take time for rest but take time ALSO for play, as well as for work physical and work mental AND work spiritual; that the body may keep physically fit, may keep mentally acute, may keep spiritually balanced. These not as rote but rather as making a life, and experience worth while and well balanced. And these will produce in the body a GREATER ability for making the experience more worth while for self in EVERY manner.
-
How are these, then, to be accomplished?
-
Have regular periods for a physical exercise of whatever nature that may be chosen by the body. As well as in the open or in the environs that may be had in the open, have a regular PERIOD for these and let this be included in it; that at least once each week there is workout, as it were, in some manner in which FOLLOWING same there may be a sweat, a change of temperature for the body by the physical exercise; following same by a thorough rubdown. And at the period when the rubdowns are taken, have such a masseur give special attention to the bursae of the feet and especially, also, to that massage through the GROIN, through the lumbar, through those areas of the end of the spine; that we may relieve those tensions upon the glands that tend to make for heaviness by too much sitting or too great an activity WITHOUT the proper recuperative forces; or the glands in that area about the coccyx end of the spine.
-
In the massaging of the feet be mindful of the bursae in the heel, or the Achillean bursa; those in the matter of the feet; those in the toes. And coordinate these with the muscles and tendons under the knees. Thus we will RESTRAIN those activities for pressures upon the lower portions of the body.
-
These activities will keep the body from too great an increasing in the weight of the body, or of it becoming localized about the waist or through the shoulders either.
-
In the matter of the diet, not too great quantities of highly seasoned foods - as in too much of red meat; for these tend to make for too great a strain upon the digestive forces. Do not combine great quantities of starches with the sweets that are taken; though these may be taken separately. Rather let the meats be fish, fowl, lamb, than those of beef or those that are not WELL cooked or prepared.
-
And we will find we will keep the body mentally and physically fit, giving the opportunities for greater expression through the spiritual impulses and forces of the body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
Would be well at times, when the body is tired, either mentally or physically, to use the Radio-Active Appliance. This not as a REGULAR thing; only when tired or weary or when there’s been too great an exercise. This will be found to be restful and helpful for the body.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 6/23/36 He submitted questions for a Physical Reading for himself, saying: Before very long I hope to have some good reports for you of the various readings you have given for those I know:
- Has there been any improvement in the condition of the foot? Is masseur giving proper treatment and is there any suggested change in the manner of treatment.
- Advise condition of eyes. Advise cause and possibly remedy.
- What is condition of stomach and advise corrective measures.
- Does a hernia condition exist around the navel? If so, what caused same and how can it be corrected?
- Why did not original reading disclose any of these conditions?
R2. 7/1/36 “Inasmuch as I will be out of town on July 11th I should like to hold up my appointment until I communicate with you again, but will you please make the appointment for Mr. [1110]…”
R3. 7/23/36 Mr. [1113] submitted questions for Mr. [1110], verifying the appointment for July 29th, asking that the reading be given sooner if possible.
R4. 7/27/36 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [1113]:
Dear Mr. [1113]:
Yours of 23rd received, and wired Mr. [1110] making the appointment as per your letter; but have report from Tel. Co. that he has passed away. Trust this is not true, but would like to hear from you regards this and if the case is exaggerated by the Tel. Co. are we to keep the appointment? Please wire me upon receipt of this, won’t you please.
Yours very truly [signed] Edgar Cayce
Time set as per your letter, Wed. afternoon, the 29th
R5. 7/29/36 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [257]: “When did you see [1113]
- what about [1110]? I had a letter from [1113] asking me to make an appointment for [1110] today, wired [1110] and rec’d word from the telegraph company that he died several weeks ago. I don’t get it.”
R6. 7/29/36 Mrs. [1154]‘s [Mr. [1113]‘s sec’ty] ltr. to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce Assn. for Research & Development Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I had quite a shock this afternoon when I telephoned Mrs. […] again and she admitted to me that Mr. [1110] had passed away suddenly on Sunday, and that she had been making every effort to keep the information away from this office and from Mr. [1113] who is out of town.
Mr. [1113] who has not been quite well lately, left on Saturday [7/25] for a short cruise and on Sunday this unfortunate incident occurred. Mrs. […] knowing how Mr. [1113] would be affected by the death of his dearest friend, did not even notify me for fear that I would manage to cable Mr. [1113] and bring him back to the city. For that reason she did not even want you to know, or Mr. [257], or anyone else who might have conveyed this information to Mr. [1113], and hence she was distracted when she learned that your telegram had been answered with the information of Mr. [1110]‘s passing. In her anxiety to keep the information from Mr. [1113] in every way she mentioned to Western Union that she did not want anyone to know of the matter and this information was passed on to you.
I, myself, am pretty much upset about the death of Mr. [1110] for he had been getting along rather nicely up to two months ago when we requested a check reading, and just before Mr. [1113] left he seemed to be losing whatever good he had obtained from the suggestions made by you.
Mr. [1113], who is expected to return on Friday [7/31], is going to be very miserable, especially since he had built up so much faith in the improvement that was so obvious in Mr. [1110] as a result of your help.
Is it possible for you to tell me why Mr. [1110] should have taken a turn for the worse and passed away so very suddenly.
Sincerely yours, Mrs. [1154]
R7. 7/30/36 Mr. [257]‘s ltr: “Reference your letter today on [1113], Mr. [1110] died about ten days ago and this is the first I knew of it.
“Mr. [1113] has organized himself as a committee of one to thoroughly investigate psychic phenomena, especially as it concerns Edgar Cayce. One of the things he wanted to do was to see whether a reading could be given on a man who had just passed away.
“Mr. [1120] knew nothing about his plan nor did I. But since the reading was given on his friend Mr. [1111], their friend who died several months ago and the reading stated that he could go to Florida after he came out of the hospital and later when he came out he had passed away, Mr. [1113] stated that the only thing they could do with him then was to bury him in Fla.
“He is not cynical and he is not poking fun. He really is trying to find out just what there is from his standpoint in the phenomena.”
R8. 7/31/36 EC’s ltr. to Miss [1154]:
Dear Miss [1154]:
Thanks for yours of 29th. So sorry to hear of Mr. [1110]‘s passing. Knew there was something all wrong but could hardly imagine that. Must have been very sudden. Would not know how to answer, why, but suspect would you look over his last reading you will see the warning given there. Wish there was something I could say or do, but we are all speechless before the grim reaper, for he is no respecter of persons.
Hope Mr. [1113] will write me at length when he has the time and the inclination. Please ask him to won’t you?
Thanking you for your writing and hoping that you are feeling improved yourself.
With all good wishes
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce
R9. 8/3/36 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [257]: “As to Mr. [1113] - well, don’t say too much as yet. You do not know the facts. I have several versions, all in writing, but you surely know a self-appointed investigator doesn’t get far, anywhere. The reading is not one whit more honest with the person than the person is themselves. If they knowingly lie, the reading will knowingly lie - also the reading for any person is a reflection of their own honesty. If it isn’t it is not anything at all. But will wait until I hear from Mr. [1113] - then I can tell you what is what.”
R10. 8/15/36 [1113]‘s ltr. to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce Assn. For Research & Enlightenment Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
I am sorry I did not get an opportunity to write you before this, but Mr. [1110]‘s death was quite a shock and it has left me rather dazed.
I have become somewhat of a cynic with regard to your readings, inasmuch as Mr. [1110] had followed your recommendations religiously and I was counting on the fact that these readings would prove or disprove the theory.
Although I have carefully gone over all your readings of Mr. [1110] and particularly the last one, I can find no warning given as to his condition or possible passing.
I also want to call your attention to the fact that the reading given to Mr. [1110] also gave not indication that he would not come out of the hospital. Instead you suggested that WHEN he did leave the hospital, it would be advisable to send him to a warm climate where there would be seashore as well. That one instance was not proof, because the reading was taken at the time of an emergency. With Mr. [1110] it was quite different, since for many months he had been following without deviation, all recommendations made by you through your readings. I have come to the point where I feel that possibly his exertions in following your suggestions with regard to the spinal manipulations may have hastened his end.
In all frankness and sincerity, I feel that the hope and faith I had in the work you are doing, has turned to disbelief and until I receive definite proof to change my present frame of mind, I shall not advise any person to have a reading taken.
About a month ago I sent you a list of questions to be included in a check reading for me, all of which related to conditions which were not mentioned during the first reading given for me. Will you please make an appointment for this check reading, so that these questions can now be answered.
It would be interesting to receive your comments on this candid expression of opinion.
Sincerely yours, [1113]
R11. 8/18/36 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [1113]:
Dear Mr. [1113]:
Have yours of the 15th, and note what you have to say regards the death of Mr. [1110] also the reference to Mr. [1111]. Such conditions have arisen I suppose in the experience of every man at some time or another, there is little for me to say, you have your opinion and no doubt it is justly formed from what the evidence appears to you, then there is no argument. I have never and am sure never will claimed any thing for the suggestions that have been given and are given each day almost, can only tell you what others have said of their experience with such information. I do know what it has done for myself, and what I have seen come to members of my own family. It is possible I have been fooling myself all these years. Don’t think so, but it is possible. Good has come to thousands, from what they say, why it does not to every one I do not know. Am persuaded it was a fine thing when freedom was sought by the Children of Israel when they left Egypt, but how many that was 21 years old arrived in the land of promise. Why? There must have been a reason, as there is surely a reason why so many claim to obtain help through the readings. Just as there is some reason why others don’t, that is why we are trying to study as thoroughly as possible and try and arrive at some conclusion.
The first open time, Mr. [1113], is Monday after noon. If that would be satisfactory to you, but if you are of the opinion the informations was of harm to your friend would it be wise to try same?
Am glad to try and help, but can never promise same. Please let me hear with your questions if you wish the appointment.
With all good wishes
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce

Dear Mr. Cayce:
I have your letter of August 18th and I know you can hardly blame me for my attitude of skepticism. It is true I was very enthusiastic about the work you are doing and it was only after Mr. [1110]‘s death that I gave up considerable time for reflection of the matter. It occurred to me that I did not witness an actual cure, but I did know of two deaths, and of course you must realize that considerable doubt has begun to creep into my mind.
However, I should like you to keep the appointment for my check reading Monday, August 24th at 4:30 P.M. I will be at the office, at that time, which is located at … Avenue. If you have mislaid the questions previously sent to you, the enclosed copy will be of assistance. I am curious to know why these questions were not answered during my previous reading and I am really looking forward to the report that you will give as a result of this check reading.
I trust you and your family are well.
Sincerely yours, [1113]
