GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here; this we have had before.
-
Many changes have come about in the general physical forces of the body since last we had same here. There are evidences in the general physical forces of an acute condition arising from an inactivity of the gall duct as related to the activity of the pancreas.
-
Thus, with an overtaxed condition by the body, there has been produced a contraction in the muscular forces from the upper dorsal - or from the 5th and 6th dorsal - to the coordinating center at the 1st and 2nd cervical.
-
This produced an overflush, or an overflow of blood supply from heart to liver, to lungs, to head.
-
And this, cutting off the supply - or activity to the lower portions - brought a congestion in the body.
-
We would give a RELAXING application osteopathically to stimulate - relax AND stimulate - relax first the activities in the 6th, 7th and 8th dorsal, then stimulate that activity from the 3rd, 2nd and 4th cervical and to the lumbar axis.
-
These will aid in setting up a stimulating drain to those activities of the organs thus affected.
-
Give internally that as would be an active principle upon the pancreas, the liver AND the gall duct; such as would be found in a quantity of Jerusalem artichoke. This is preferable, though it may give the same character of shock as insulin. DO NOT give this hypodermically, but at least two or three artichokes the size of a hen egg - these eaten at once; that is, at one time, see? preferably cooked, and in their own juices (as in Patapar Paper).
-
Afterwards have an emit, as a vegetable laxative; preferably of a senna base, - Syrup of Figs or Cascara or the like.
-
Do these, as we find; with precautions as to the activities. Do not overheat the body nor make too quick changes through the cold showers or the like, though hot and cold hydrotherapy would be well - provided it is supplied with plenty of massage during the application.
-
Do that for this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Has he had Infantile Paralysis or just a very bad reaction due to muscle strain? (A) This, as indicated, has been rather a shock - which is akin to but not Infantile Paralysis.
Also we would give internally one drop of Atomidine in half a glass of water each morning before any meal is taken, for five days; then leave off for ten days, then give again for five days. This is to purify the glands and to stimulate the activity through the thyroid as associated with the glands of the liver, spleen and kidneys.
-
(Q) Is he getting about too much? (A) Rather the overtaxing; but not getting about too much, provided not overheated.
-
(Q) Should he go back to Swarthmore to college in September or stay where his mother (an osteopath) can treat him? (A) Swarthmore college should be alright, for he should have the condition corrected by or before that time.
-
(Q) How much mental strain is there in this case? (A) This is, of course, partially the cause, but it is rather the activity of the organs indicated.
Do as outlined and we should see a ready response.
- We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 8/23/41 “Thanks so much for your report. I obtained the Atomidine here but have sent to Wis. for the artichokes. [1123] seems to be getting along quite well, altho we have to get up once in the night to use the hot water on his legs for the pain. He seems quite nervous and apprehensive. I presume the fear will go as he gets better. I was glad you thought it would be wise for him to return to Swarthmore as it is keeping him up, the thought of going back to school. He will have to get a better adjustment with his activities and strength.”
R2. 9/23/41 “[1123] has been getting along very well physically. I just received the artichokes yesterday and he will have them with his dinner tonight. Swarthmore College will not open until Oct. 6th due to the many cases of Infantile Paralysis near and in Philadelphia. The State of Penna. has been hard hit with the disease. [1123] has been so active it is hard for him to be at home with nothing specific to do with all his associates back at college. However, it will not be long now.”
R3. 3/16/43 Mother [Dr. [1125]‘s] letter: “[1123] is in the Engineering Branch of the Service now.”
Background
Background
B1. See 1123-2, his first Physical, on 2/1/37.
B2. 8/19/41 Mother’s letter: “[1123] is now 18 yrs. old. He was in charge of the water front at the Boy Scout Camp…down on the … Bay when he was taken with pain and stiffness of the muscles of his neck, shoulders and legs.
Aug. 5th He had a temperature first 100, then 102. It has been normal now, or very near, since last Thursday, Aug. 14th. [1123] has been very active. On Mon. eve Aug. 4th he canoed up the Bay and went to a dance. He got hot and tired going up. When he got to shore he became chilly and had a chill. That seems to be the start. We brought him home. I called in doctors (medicals), as his head seemed so drawn back. I thought he should be in the hospital. They took him there, made a spinal puncture. The results showed many virus excess lymphocytes and sugar of 143 where it should be 50 to 60. The doctors thought it was chario meningitis - the test did not show it. The hospital isolated him, thinking it was Infantile Paralysis. The Institute of Health exam. couldn’t tell. [1123] is at home now. He is doing very well, but his legs ache and lower back. His lumbar area is still. He cannot sleep well. Will you please test as soon as possible so that I may know how to proceed. I should have written you at once but in my anxiety it slipped my mind. Many, many thanks. Hope you and yours are well.”
