TEXT OF READING 1135-5 M 35 (Psychologist)
Text
Date: 5/6/1936 Sex: M Age: 35 ReadingID: 6428
This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 6th day of May, 1936, in accordance with request made by the self - Dr. [1135], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Hugh Lynn Cayce.]
Time of Reading 4:30 to 4:40 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City. (Continue information given thru this channel for [1135] on Mental Telepathy on April 9, 1936, under the following suggestion: Consider the intent and desire of [1135] to conduct specific experiments with the view of enlarging our understanding of thought transference (Mental Telepathy). Advise regarding the best procedure to follow, including basic principles and suggestions for properly conducting the individual experiments.)
-
EC: Yes.
-
In attempting to send a mental impression is it best that the sender hold a picture of the word or impression to be transferred or hold the name of the image or impression in mind. What would be the easiest symbols to send. Do you recommend any special type of symbol or impression for experimental purposes.
-
What part does the time element play in transference of thought. What part do physical surroundings, position of the body, and condition of the physical body play in transference of thought.
-
Then, as the physical or pathological and mental conditions have been given, in what manner would or should be the procedure in understanding or applying such laws to be studied or to be contacted?
-
Regarding telepathy:
-
That the phenomenon is of the high mental forces, or what may be termed the superconscious forces; and not using the ordinary means but that such conditions found to be existent in specific individuals are ATTUNED to the various forms or manners of giving manifestations of same. Then these may not be tested for their efficiency or for their value in the practical experience in your test tubes or other ordinary means or measures, but must be upon the basis or direction in which these take their bent or trend.
-
Explain what takes place when a thought passes from one mind to another.]
-
For an illustration:
-
You find an artiste that is musical; with the ear and sense forces given for the application in the use of some specific instrument. Do you give one that’s playing a horn piano lessons? or piano lessons to one that plays the violin?
-
Not that these are not kindred. Not that these are not in accord. But the expression, the ability to move those forces that manifest themselves, comes through their PARTICULAR phase of expression and manner.
-
Thus in seeking these, find first, take first, those of the pathological; then their correlations with the sincerity or the honesty of the individual and their correlated effects or activity in the spiritual force. Then follow these in their varied channels. And there may be found, there may be discovered in many much that is not only worthy of acceptation but that will make for the abilities of many - that have been attempted to be made into this or that in the developing of their activities through their expression in a given experience - to find THEMSELVES and thus give expression to that which is in the INNER sense the telepathic communication of their real selves to that in another realm or material realm.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Please explain what is meant by the ratio of those cycles about each of the red blood corpuscles is one to three? How determined? (A) By taking the blood itself of individuals and making that count as to what is the protoplasmic cellular force given off by such individuals.
-
(Q) The one to three refers to what relationship? (A) Positive and negative cycle forces about each atomic structure in the blood cell itself.
-
(Q) What is referred to by the body-vibratory forces 87 and 7/10? How may this be determined? (A) The number of the pulsations or the opening and shutting forces of the coordinating of the blood supply between lung, heart and liver.
-
(Q) How may that be determined? (A) Count it, as it acts through the system!
-
(Q) In order to gain a better understanding of this subject [1135] has proposed in a letter from him under date of April 26th - * (A) (Interrupting) Then let him do something about it! We are THROUGH!
Copy to Hugh Lynn Cayce ” ” Ass’n file
- [following portion of 13-Q not asked due interruption: “a copy of which I hold in my hand, that an experiment be undertaken through this channel and under the observation of professors from Columbia University. a. Observation of any experiment suggested through this channel. (or) b. Undertake an experiment devised by [1135].”]
[Questions submitted which did not get asked:
As indicated [1135] proposes not to connect the name of Cayce or the Association with the results if we so desire at this time. He feels that this step will lead to considerable light on this subject and the possibility of him being able to devote more time to a direct study of this work, in connection with Duke University activities.
Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 5/11/36 EC’s letter to [1135]: ”…We received yours of the 5th, enclosing the check, for which we thank you very much.
The Life Reading for your son we will probably be able to get in sometime next week. We have been very busy since we have been back, and have had quite a number of emergency readings. Emergencies rather disrupt the regular program and necessitate our putting off especially the Life Readings.
I think Hugh Lynn is writing you about the reading on telepathy. Personally, from the reaction I saw among those sitting around when I awoke, I don’t think it was a very satisfactory reading. Maybe it was. But it’s one of those things that come at times when we wonder what it is all about. However, Hugh Lynn will write you and he no doubt can tell you more about it than I possibly can.
I was certainly very glad to see you again, and to meet Mrs. [1136]. We are looking forward to it being possible for you both to spend some time at the Beach.
With kindest personal regards to you both…”
R2. See 1177-1 on 5/25/36.
R3. 5/26/36 [1135]‘s ltr. to EC: ”…This evening, sometime between 9 and 11 o’clock I received a message purporting to come from you. At least that is the only interpretation I can make. If it is true that you have been thinking of me, even if you have not deliberately sent a message I wish you would tell me about it.
Incidentally, will you let me know the dates your annual meeting at Va. Beach. If it is at all feasible I hope to be there for a part of it.
I am sorry you did not feel the telepathy reading to be interesting. I most certainly did. In the light of certain experimental results I am getting I wish I could ask another question or two on the subject…”
R4. 5/29/36 EC’s ltr. to [1135]: ”…Yours of 26th most interesting, while on the particular evening 26th I was quite busy, in fact was trying to give to our groups my version of Psychic experiences of a few of the personages in the O.T. so could not say the message was even thought of that evening. But realizing from my own experience that ‘time’ is such an evasive factor in such information, I certainly wonder.
On Monday we had gotten your Son’s life reading [1177-1] on Tuesday afternoon I read it for the first time. (Hugh Lynn will possibly write you fully about same) some of the information in that reading was so amazing to us all it would have been impossible most for me not to have had you in mind and to a great deal more than usual been thinking of you, and possibly framing in my own mind things would like to say to you at the time, and wondering, most of all just what it is all about and if we really know anything. I am not trying to be evasive Dr. but would not know even how to begin to put into words what has gone through my mind regards you since having that reading. Hope Hugh Lynn will tell you in such a way that when we see you at the meeting here, 27th to the 30th of June inclusive days, that we can have a good long talk over the whole matter that will be, not only interesting but most of all beneficial to all concerned. Will see you then.
Please understand when I say a reading is not interesting, I am speaking personally, for do not as in that case understand the information, but if any information is helpful to any one, then to me it is worthwhile. Sure ask just as many questions as you like on the subject, will be very glad and try and help if it only helps you get something that will be helpful to some one else.
Had the pleasure yesterday of speaking a few minutes with Dr. Rhine at Duke, Hugh Lynn will doubtless write you about same.
Thanks for your letter, please know I am always glad to try and be of help to any one, provided the information doesn’t indicate it would be harmful to my continuing to be of help. Hope Mrs. [1136] is trying out the suggestions…”
R5. 5/29/36 HLC’s ltr. to [1135]: ”…My correspondence has been sadly neglected since returning to the Beach. I have been putting off writing to you, hoping that I would get in another reading on the telepathy before mailing this one which is enclosed [1177-1, son’s Life Reading]. I have the feeling that we rushed it a bit when my father had not completely recovered from the rush of New York and numerous emergency readings shortly after his return. Since you mentioned that you have some other questions on telepathy ready I will rush this along without further delay. Let me have a complete list of your questions and I will get them ready for a reading just as soon as it can be gotten in. This time I will include your suggestions regarding the experiment on the end of same or in a separate reading. All of these are, of course, being given under our own research program, taken care of by some of our members who are interested.
My father and mother drove down to Durham yesterday to see my brother. I went along and Dad and I dropped in to see Dr. Rhine. We only had an hour with him and you can well imagine how far Dad got with the story of his life in that length of time. As I told you I felt very strongly that this was important, for my father’s willingness, simplicity and straightforwardness in approaching the whole subject are impressive. We both liked Dr. Rhine very much. We spoke briefly of the need of having someone stationed at the Beach to make a careful study of the readings day by day. My father expressed a willingness to attempt any type of experiment Rhine cared to devise, but pointed out that he felt the best way to carry on would be with someone at the Beach checking and watching any attempts which were made. Dr. Rhine spoke of obtaining the assistance of a few doctors in various parts of the country to suggest and check on cases. We feel that this would be an excellent plan and will be able to furnish a few to cooperate on this. Such a plan should be worked out with someone like you - we feel of course it should be you, - present to observe and check on such work. Dr. Rhine asked about our reaction to you, pointing out that it was essential that such a person who would make any investigation be sympathetic. Naturally we assured him of our feelings in the matter as being entirely cooperative. Just before leaving he mentioned the difficulty in obtaining funds for his work and questioned me as to the possibility of securing such fund from some of our members for carrying on this work with Duke. I told him that I would be glad to present any plan he cared to suggest to our Board in June. You know our situation on this. I am trying to direct every bit we can secure into our actual overhead and expansion of office facilities and publications. However, I consider the possibility of having you work with us under a complete plan worked out by Duke or by you as being most important. Please advise me as to what you consider the proper steps to take from this point, aside from the readings which we will continue until obtaining positive or completely negative results in line with your suggestions on the experiment.
I am working on some experiments in telepathy with local groups and hope to have some material for you by the time I see you again. I am using twenty-five cards with symbols (5 each) such as triangle, cross, etc. Please advise me of any technique of procedure which you feel would be helpful. What is above chance on calling? I am keeping complete records, including general conditions in room, time, and method of sending symbols. Advise anything else you desire. [See A.R.E. Group #7 rdgs. 792-1 and 792-3.]
Our Congress is to be held June 27, 28, 29 and 30th. We would be glad if you can attend just as many of these meetings as possible. While we do not have large attendance, those who come from various parts of the country are deeply interested. There are many of our members with whom you would be interested in talking. I would especially like for you to be present for an informal dinner which will close the meetings on June 30th. We would like for you and Mrs. [1136] to be our guests at that time. I will appreciate it if you will advise me as soon as possible if you can arrange this. Also if you will we will be glad if you will say a bit about the progress of scientific investigation of psychic phenomena. This need not be a formal address.
Now to a most interesting matter. I would much prefer talking with you about this than writing, so I’ll say just enough to explain Dad’s letter and leave the rest for future conversation, and observation. You will remember the dates and times given of the birth and death of your son in the incarnation just before this present one. While they may mean little to you let us suppose that anyone listening to this reading realized they were the exact dates and exact time of the birth and death of someone whom they knew? You will notice too the reference to the fact that the mother - in the past incarnation - would be especially interested. I had a brother who was born and died on the dates and at the times mentioned. We are all looking forward with considerable interest to the time when it will be possible to meet your son. My father and mother have both had some peculiar experiences in relation to studies of reincarnation. You can see the possibilities. I am sure that much of your son’s reading will be clarified when you have the opportunity of talking with them about it. Is there any possibility of you being here at the Beach with him this summer - its an excellent place for kids, by the way - or of having him attend camp here, or even visiting us? There are many conditions to be considered. Naturally it will be best for you to study and observe any reactions. You will not say anything to him, of course. Both my father and mother were thinking of you a good deal for two or three days after this reading. [See 1177-1, his son’s Life Reading.]
The Beach is preparing for a real summer. Everyone is expecting the best season in years. I do hope you and Mrs. [1136] will be able to spend some time here…”
R6. 6/29/36 Dr. [1135] wired that due to accumulated responsibilities requiring his presence he was unable to attend Congress, hoped to cooperate more effectively in the future.
R7. 9/19/36 [1135]‘s ltr. to EC: ”…I worried about you last night when news of the bad storm came in over the radio. I do hope you and your family and house were spared. If I were myself clairvoyant I would have tuned in on Virginia Beach to see if all were well.
I haven’t heard from your son for some time but I imagine he is busy as he always is. I have been working myself, preparing a report on my work for Duke. Also, the small matter of trying to earn an honest penny has been occupying my time. I am sorry that we could not get far enough with our work together for me to include a description of it for Duke. Perhaps that may come later. At any rate, please know that I am interested and would cooperate right now on any tests that could be arranged from a distance. As I wrote Hugh Lynn some time ago my colleagues at Columbia would be glad to help. If he is to be in N.Y. this fall after college opens I would be glad to have him meet some of them and discuss such possibilities.
But I didn’t mean this to be a business letter - merely word that I am thinking of you and hope you are all well and happy…”
R8. 9/25/36 EC’s ltr. to [1135]: ”…Thanks for yours of 19th, nice to know that you were thinking of us, the storm was rather kind to us, not so severe for the section as the one in ‘33, quite a bit of damage here and there. Took off few shingles for us and that let a lot of water in, and mostly in the room where the files are that kept us busy, but are gradually getting straight. Yes, Hugh Lynn has kept busy has had quite a bit of group activity, and that has kept him on the go. Will be glad to cooperate in any way can, hope you will have the opportunity to study the work here to your own satisfaction, or until you have arrived at some definite conclusion. Do not know when H. L. will be in N.Y. but am sure he would like to talk with the people at Columbia, and will try anything the information will do.
Have had some very encouraging reports from every type of reading in last few months, some can hardly believe myself.
What did you make of the boy’s [1177’s life reading, anything?
Thanks for your letter, and will be very glad to hear from you any time…”
R9. 10/5/36 HLC’s ltr. to [1135]: ”…Just a note to let you know we haven’t blown away and to make a request.
The summer was a busy one and the readings have been steady, too steady, resulting in a temporary physical upset for my father. This was nothing serious - really probably just a way of protecting him from too much work. He is feeling fine again now. Within the next few days I will write you in detail regarding plans for a series of readings for you at regular intervals, to continue until we get results. Please be considering your own ideas along the lines previously suggested by you in connection with Columbia.
Do you have a copy of Dr. Rhine’s ‘Extra Sensory Perception’ which you can lend me for a couple of weeks. It is on our list for purchase but we haven’t caught up with that list in a couple of years. I will take good care and return it within the two week period. I am reviewing a series of books for a group here at the beach and wish to include this. Intend also to carry a complete review in our Bulletin.
You will hear from me again within a few days but am in a hurry to get this off.
If you have the opportunity to phone or see Thomas Sugrue please do so. He is or recently has been in Washington but you can locate him through his office at the American Magazine on Fifth Avenue. He is the young man who is writing the book on my father…”
R10. 10/8/36 [1135]‘s ltr. to HLC: ”…I am certainly glad to hear from you. It’s too bad that your father has been upset. It is only natural that he should be with so many people depending upon him and his guidance. I think it is wonderful that you are able to protect him as much as you do from the demands made upon him. I will be very happy to hear from you regarding the series of readings you suggest. Of course, if these are to be undertaken it must be only with the full approval of your father and with the knowledge that it will not be too much of an added strain.
Your letter reached me here in town where we will be for the winter. I may have a copy of Rhine’s book in … and if I have I shall be happy to contribute it to the Association Library. I cannot promise that I still have a copy for people were constantly borrowing it, but I shall be out there for a day or two within the next couple of weeks and will have a look.
I shall try to see Thomas Sugrue early next week…”
