This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 7th day of April, 1936, in accordance with request made by the father - Dr. […] [Ph.D.], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Dr. [1135].

1. EC: Yes. (Should have been Dorothy.)

2. As we find, the basic disturbance would require the deeper activity into the ENTITY’S experience.

3. But we find that help, aid, may be brought for the body.

4. While the first apparent physical cause arose from infectious disturbance through the gastrointestinal tract, there has been left in the present a disturbance that makes for incoordinations through the activities of the body; through those actions of the lymph in its inability to function through the lacteal area, the caecum and those extensions in same to the ileum plexus. [Empyema according to doctors, we learned later: “Accumulation of pus in a cavity of the body, especially in the chest.”]

5. These as we find, then, prevent the proper coordination with the voluntary and involuntary reactions; and thus the disturbances of the varied natures.

6. We find that those applications which would be made first would be through a low electrical force carrying elements into the system in such a nature as to vibratorially react with the GLANDS of the body. Thus there may be produced in the body’s cycle of development in the physical reactions that which would bring greater activity to those portions where there has been such an adherence, such a lack of activity through locomotory centers, through the nerve forces and the muscular tissues. And thus gradually we may build for better conditions in the body.

7. Begin, then, with those applications of the Wet Appliance that would carry IN same - as direct through the body from the lacteal duct area - the solutions of Gold in the proportions of three grains to the liquid fluid ounce of distilled water. The copper plate would be attached to the 4th lumbar. The attachments would be made each day for thirty minutes, for a period of three to six weeks.

8. Then we would give further instructions.

10. (Q) Where should the other plate be attached? (A) As given, the copper plate should be attached first - at the 4th lumbar plexus. The larger nickel plate, carrying the Gold solution, should be attached last - over the lacteal duct and those portions of the umbilicus center in the right portion above the CAECUM area - or a portion of the gall duct, the lacteal duct, the umbilicus plexus.

Do that.

Then, in the period indicated we would give further instructions.

Dear Dr. […]

In compliance with your wire, we undertook the information this morning - a copy of which you no doubt have in hand by now.

Through the years I have never made any claims for such information; I do not comprehend it. And my only excuse for being engaged in a work of this nature is the testimony from so many who have been helped. I know what it has meant in my own immediate family, and I’m hoping and trusting that the information through these sources will prove just as helpful to you as it has to me personally.

I appreciate your interest, and assure you that it is our sincere desire to be of help whenever and wherever possible. We realize that we have nothing to sell, and that we can claim nothing; for we do not know beforehand - ever - what to expect. But let’s hope for the best.

We are leaving for New York and will probably see Dr. [1135] while there - during the next two weeks.

Dear Dr. […]

I have been advised that in a recent psychic reading given through our Association for your daughter a Wet Cell Appliance was suggested.

We have obtained some remarkable results with these appliances over a period of years and are always glad to arrange to place either the Wet Cell or Radio Active Appliance (both of these were described over fifteen years ago through Mr. Cayce’s psychic readings, and have been used since that time in a number of interesting and unusual cases), in the hands of competent persons for observation and study. I have taken the liberty of taking this matter up with our Research Committee and we shall be glad to furnish you this appliance without any expense to you, if you will carry out the treatments suggested in detail and let us have a report on the results. I am enclosing a copy of a letter I am writing today to the Health Home Remedies Corporation who manufacture these appliances. A note from you to them will receive prompt attention.

We have been very glad to cooperate with Dr. [1135] and hope that we will have the pleasure of meeting and talking with you in the near future. Dear Mr. Cayce:

Allow me to thank you and Mr. Edgar Cayce for your kindness in the prompt cooperation you gave me under the hasty circumstances of my application. I trust that everything was satisfactory in the formal application made a few days ago and that you have or will soon have received the check for which I immediately issued an order.

Unfortunately, the diagnosis was, so far as all symptoms go, entirely incorrect, and I felt, therefore, that it would not be wise to go into treatment based upon such a diagnosis. You understand, of course, that since I am myself making studies of parapsychical phenomena, that I am fully prepared philosophically to understand failure in such cases, even if I did not know that you yourselves disclaim any certainty or perfection in your work. In fact, I should be quite skeptical at the start if you did not disclaim absolute precision.

It was not in the interest of submitting a mere test that I made this application for a physical reading, but rather in the interest of obtaining information on a difficult case. Unfortunately, however, if there is anything that is clearly eliminated, it is the condition which you describe. And there has been no history to which the theory of causation indicated in the reading would apply.

However, let us leave the matter rest here, with cordial good wishes for better success the next time. I have had so many failures in this work that they only make me hunt further for the successes which we do, under the right conditions, frequently obtain.

Allow me to thank you most kindly for your generous suggestion of loaning me the Wet Cell Appliance and to thank you and your organization for you kindness to my friend, Dr. [1135]. Your cooperation with him has left a most favorable and stimulating impression upon him as upon me, and I myself hope that sometime I will be able to visit you, or that Mr. Cayce will, if occasion offers, drop in to see us here.

Dear Dr. […]

Thank you for your letter of April 13. I have refrained from answering it until returning to the Beach where I would have the opportunity of going over the reading which was secured on your daughter. We appreciate the attitude which you assumed.

You point out that the analysis of your daughter’s condition was, so far as you could determine, incorrect. This interests us just as much as if you told us that it proved to be entirely accurate. For our own information I plan to follow this up and learn if possible just why it was not possible to secure a more complete reading for you. I will be glad to forward to you the results of my questions.

In connection with the information already received I am wondering if you interpret the remarks regarding the cause and condition in your daughter’s case as I interpret them. I will appreciate it very much if you will advise me if the following thoughts on this subject are in line with your own.

The reading indicates that at some time in the past some type of infection arose in the gastrointestinal tract. This may have caused fever and disturbed stomach or disturbed eliminations. This left in the body some congestion in the lacteals, which are closely associated with the assimilation of properties from foods that furnish rebuilding substances for nerve tissue. In other words the disturbance in the lymph circulation extends through the lacteal area and affects the assimilation in the caecum and ileum. I would understand that this results not just in a disturbed assimilation but in the cutting off of the supplies of nerve energy to these areas. It is unfortunate that the statement which follows next in the reading is not made more specific as there are many types of voluntary and involuntary reactions. We certainly might say that all the internal functions of the body were involuntary, but this information would apparently indicate this incoordination to exist through the lower portion of the body.

Reference is next made to the glands and to locomotory centers. According to this I would understand that impoverishment in the nerve and muscular tissues has resulted from this block in the areas mentioned. From this it would certainly be hard to give any name to the condition, yet it is certainly a definite description and not vague as might be first thought upon a cursory reading. The question would be as to whether this fits at all with the existent conditions. The questions that naturally come to mind would be: (1) Has there been any condition of up set stomach, fever and disturbed eliminations? Not necessarily in the immediate present but in the past. (2) Are there now existent any conditions that show incoordination between the voluntary and involuntary reactions, especially in the lower portion of the body? (3) Is there any sign of nerve or muscular impoverishment in the centers that control the legs or arms?

Please do not consider it necessary to answer these questions. I simply indicate my own trend of thinking in interpreting this reading. And I will appreciate it very much if you will, as I have mentioned, advise me if this thinking is in line with your own approach in understanding the information given.

I have devoted just three or four years to a constant study of this work, while the readings as given by my father have a history of some thirty-five years. I have myself observed and checked case after case in which the analysis is positively correct, indeed amazingly correct. It is most interesting to find one that does not check, especially in the case of an individual like yourself who is in sympathy with the many difficulties encountered in securing the proper mental atmosphere, if I may use this term, for such experiments. We shall certainly like to trace this to its source and will appreciate your cooperation.

As you have learned from Dr. [1135], I am sure, we are not interested in trying to prove anything. We are most anxious to cooperate with, and make available any small results we have obtained, as we meet individuals who are seriously studying the many phases of psychic phenomena.

We have over fifteen thousand copies of these psychic readings on various individuals and subjects in our files. Thousands of these cases are complete with reports on very favorable results. Complete reports, including physicians parallel examinations, x-rays, etc., showing correct analyses and remarkable results number more than a thousand. My father continues to give two of these readings each day for individuals in all parts of the country. In many of these definite and specific examples of unusual powers of clairvoyance are appearing frequently.

We have furnished Dr. [1135] a cross section of our files to be included in a report to be submitted to you. On the basis of this report and such further material as we will be glad to furnish you from time to time we hope to be able to be of service. Please advise us if there is any way in which we may cooperate.

I would like very much to meet and talk with you personally. I have a brother who is now in the freshman engineering class there in […]. May I stop in to see you the next time I am in …?

R9. 5/11/60 Mrs. […], A.R.E. member’s letter:

Dear Dr. […]

I am now working on a book concerning some of the readings of Edgar Cayce. According to […], the readings in March of 1936, and in April you secured a reading for your small daughter, but the diagnosis did not seem to fit her condition.

If it is possible and you can find the time to do so, I would very much appreciate knowing anything else you can tell me about the correctness or incorrectness of that reading. The editor has asked that I should be sure to follow up any inaccuracies in order to present as true a picture as possible. I have checked on some of his predictions and prophecies, many of which have come true amazingly, others being either misunderstood or incorrect. But in medical or health readings there is very little record of inaccuracy and anything you can give me as information will be appreciated.

R10. 5/16/60 [1139]‘s father, Dr. […]‘s letter:

Dear Mrs. […]:

My daughter, [1139], then a child of about six, had empyema following pneumonia. The Cayce diagnosis was that it was an abdominal infection and the prescription was some sort of treatment with an electric circuit and a gold solution which, in addition to the diagnosis, which cost me 20.00, would have added 40.00 to the bill, since he was the only producer of such therapeutic devices.

I draw no generalized conclusions from a single case and, indeed, I find it difficult to draw conclusions from such material, even when it is available in quantities. One has to know first of all of the attempts made so as to appraise percentages of cures. One has to know, too, what the basis of judgment as to what is called a cure really is. This is difficult in many areas of medicine, but even if percentages of cures on some acceptable basis were reliably available, there is then a very much more difficult question still to be considered - that of what sort of basis of control or norm or background to use by which to judge the importance of the percentage obtained. How many people would have got well anyhow? How many people are permanently benefitted? What sort of controls would be necessary to deal with those factors of belief which might as well apply to belief in some other treatment?

I am sincerely and deeply interested in additional abilities and principles which can be found and verified in human beings which might benefit them in health and other areas of importance, but I distrust very much claims based upon the kind of evidence and the kind of methods used in evaluating it which have, so far as I know, been associated with this particular group of claims regarding the Cayce material. There is so much of prominence and importance to look into that is fresh and available today, and on which new and better experimental tests can be carried out, that I only wish all those who are giving time and money to this old collection could put their energies to better use. I think the problem is a good one, the interest of all concerned constructive and, for the most part, sincere. The material and the methods are just not up to the requirements, and I am not, therefore, interested although I respect the sincerity of many friends who are.

R11. 9/23/73 Letter to GD from a friend of [1139]‘s family, wife of a psychologist:

“Regarding the information we have available on [1139]. To the best of our recollection she was somewhat slow. Without ever having tested her we’re reluctant to emphatically state she was retarded, although our guess would be that her I.Q. was in the 80’s range.

“She led a more sheltered life than the other children, staying close to the family farm, and grew up to a vocation of raising dogs.

“Her social life was also quite restricted and we don’t believe she ever married.

“I hope this sheds some light on the subject, with our apologies for not being more definitive.”

[GD’s note: The above lovely lady, when talking to me, said that the mother of [1139] had admitted that perhaps they should have followed the reading on the child.]
