This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 31st day of May, 1936, in accordance with request made by the sister - Mrs. [1158], through Associate Membership of her husband in the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mr. [1173] and Mr. [1151].]
Time of Reading 12:35 to 12:45 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Ohio. (Information given for him through this channel on May 22, 1936. Questions.)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, the information that has been given [1173].
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Should the short wave machine which we have be used in treating my condition? (A) As we find, these conditions that exist with the body need those vibrations that are of the ELEMENTAL constructive nature, rather than those that are of a destructive nature even to infectious forces. For bodily functionings are built up by cellular separation, and those vibrations of the constructive nature then would create the influences and elements needed in the system.
We would not advise the use of the short wave, then. Rather would we use the Radio-Active BODILY electrical vibrations, building in a constructive manner within the system for its destruction of any infectious forces in the body.
- (Q) Why was no mention made in my last reading of my pleurisy? Please explain. (A) That was KNOWN to the body. That unknown and that as of a constructive nature was given, rather than that of which the system was aware. Is this not development? Isn’t that what is sought in the activities of the body, that the body may meet and overcome any destructive forces within the system?
The information is given from within TO the without, rather than from without to within.
-
(Q) Will it be possible for satisfactory arrangements to be made for this body to spend part of the summer at …, Long Island, with his sister? (A) WELL! As indicated, such should be a portion of the experiences of the body in gaining or maintaining that within the body as to produce the effective reactions for replenishing depleted energies. Sea, air, salt or sand AND woods or pines.
-
(Q) Will this be accomplished for the body? (A) It SHOULD be. As to whether or not it will be accomplished depends upon factors of human experience.
-
(Q) Any other advice at this time? (A) Rest, not in the direct rays of sun but in the open as much as possible.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 6/2/36 HLC’s letter to Mr. [1173]: “We had the pleasure of seeing Mr. [1151] and Mrs. [1158] here at the Beach during Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. [1158] suggested that your questions be added on the end of one of her readings. This we were able to do and a copy of the information received is enclosed.
“I have gone over your letter to my father and also your physical reading. In connection with your question as to why pleurisy was not specifically mentioned I would like to take this opportunity of adding to the information received in the second reading.
“In the course of some fifteen thousand physical readings we have had numerous cases of pleurisy. It is most interesting to note the similarity and differences of the causes of this condition. The information which comes through my father deals directly with the basic causes of conditions. Only in rare cases are names of diseases mentioned. THE READINGS POINT OUT THAT IT IS OFTEN TRUE THAT NAMES DESCRIBE SYMPTOMS AND FAIL TO RELATE TO BASIC CAUSES. Consider the information which you have received in this light.
“I realize your feeling that if the reading had specifically said pleurisy you would feel more confidence in the accuracy of the suggestions for bringing relief. The important point is not whether my father can tell you - having never seen you and knowing nothing of your condition - that you have a heaviness in the lung area (this is specifically mentioned, by the way), which is called pleurisy, but whether this psychic information can go deeper and describe what causes this fluid which settles in the lungs. In the description of your condition given in the first reading there are dozens of phrases describing not only what physical conditions exist but describing how you feel. Base your estimate of the accuracy of the information upon these. Beginning at the bottom of the first page and continuing on the second some interesting descriptions of your feelings are given. I shall take the liberty of jotting down a few questions based on your first reading. Check them off for your own information.
“According to the reading your condition which is called pleurisy has certain definite causes. The suggestions made are comparatively simple. As you understand, this is nothing magical, it will take time, but there is promise of recovery if you will carry through with the suggestions exactly as indicated. In connection with following the suggestions I notice you express some doubt as to the amount of exercise you can take. Expressed in different words: As you begin the treatments outlined you will begin to improve. Do not stay in bed too much AFTER YOU FEEL ABLE TO GET UP, but be sure to rest at least three hours each day even after improvement is marked and you perhaps feel strong enough to move about more than you should. In this connection the reading does not indicate that exercise is a part of the necessary treatment. As changes take place which remove the causes of the forming of this fluid GRADUALLY begin to walk a little.
“Thank you very much for writing us as you did. The wording of the readings and the internal point of view is sometimes difficult to get, especially where definite external symptoms constantly make one conscious of specific trouble. I believe that you will find it most important to go over your reading again and again. Analyze each sentence. Study each explanation in relation to your own feelings. Please feel free to write us about any part of your reading which is not entirely clear. The information which you received was certainly clear and detailed in many points. We will consider it a privilege of following this up carefully with you and of being of service in any way possible. I certainly hope you have the opportunity of visiting Mrs. [1158] this summer and following your treatments carefully…”
“Suggested list of check questions based on information in your first reading. Affirmative answers to these should indicate considerable accuracy of analysis.
- Is the blood supply disturbed? (analysis would be necessary to indicate extent of trouble as described in reading.)
- Is the spleen engorged?
- Are you generally in a weakened condition?
- Is shortness of breath existent in your condition?
- Unable to exercise without taxing yourself?
- Heaviness and hurting at times in lungs?
- Fullness at times in throat?
- Improper circulation to extremities, flushed at times, sometimes clammy?
- Weakness across small of back, through shoulder blades and around ribs?
- Did you in times past overstudy and have anything resembling a nervous breakdown?
- Do sedatives react abnormally and cause strain in assimilation?
- Is there a fullness across the left side?
- Do you have periods of animation - sometimes when very weak, also other periods of depression?
- Is there a generally disturbed mental attitude at times?”
R2. 6/3/36 EC’s letter to Mr. [1173]: “Your letter of the 26th was forwarded to me by Mrs. [1158] and I note with a great deal of interest what you have to say. I have asked my son, Hugh Lynn, to write you. He is making a study of the information coming through this channel. No doubt you have heard from him already.
”…I do hope you are feeling a lot better before this. I can certainly appreciate the experiences you must have been going through, as my wife had just such a condition as you describe - and it was the result in her case that convinced me that there was something to such psychic information, or that coming through me while I was unconscious.
“Please let us hear from you from time to time, or whenever you feel inclined to write. I hope you will continue to be on the improve until you are permanently well.
“I appreciate your letter, and I trust that your association with a work of this nature may be of great help to you and - later - to many others through you…”
R3. 6/21/36 Sister [1158] requested Life reading for [1173], thinking it would help him to get well.
R4. 6/24/36 [1173]‘s letter: ”…I sincerely appreciate the interest of yourself and your son. I intend to write…”
