-
Yes, we have the records here of that entity, now called [1188].
-
Much in connection with the records here as we find becomes as warnings as well as that which in the developing years may be used and applied to bring about an awakening to the abilities and possibilities of this entity’s sojourns in the earth, and of that as may be accomplished by same in the present.
-
For as the entity has stood in that position where there was the changing of public opinion, owing to the positions occupied by the entity in the minds of masses and groups of people, in positions where others - as is the nature of mankind - think as leaders, dictate or subscribe to (becomes confusion to get back to), we find that much may be accomplished by the entity in the present sojourn.
-
In giving the astrological aspects as we find, that influence the entity in the present, here we may find in the immediate a great deal of such an influence. But as there is the developing mind and as the activities of the entity in this material plane and the changes come about, these may become less and less influencing in this present sojourn.
-
For as we find, the material sojourns and the activities in these - especially in the one - if there are those associations in the mental forces and in the abilities of the entity through these very experiences for that relying upon its psychic intuitive forces - indicate that great changes may be wrought in not only associations but in the abilities of the entity to become more and more the leader; as is innate, but must be trained (materially) for its application in the experience.
-
The warnings as would be indicated - beware of those influences where there would be those inclinations for pulmonary disturbances, and especially that as related to bronchial relationships with cold, congestion and of those natures.
-
Then from the astrological we find these as innate:
-
In Venus, as a ruling force, we find a very sympathetic tendency towards all associations; the inclinations to worry over trifles, or things that others would soon forget to the entity the inclinations will be and are to allow self to be reminded by those things that to others would be merely sentimental reasons. A great deal of sentiment and affection, yet these are as excuses at times for the inclination to dwell upon little things that may become magnified in this tendency for worry.
-
These, of course, will be noticed and developed more as the individual entity develops towards early young manhood, or in the teen ages.
-
Those inclinations in Mercury, as from the former experience, bring the abilities to argue or debate, and yet these are at times overshadowed by interests in those things of a mechanical or machine nature.
-
Hence as we find, law - especially trained in that phase of same where activities would deal with machinery or corporations that deal in same; or of railroads or of airways or machinery of that nature - would become a portion of the entity’s NATURAL inclinations.
-
Jupiter makes for a further accentuation of those innate activities. In things that have to do with large numbers of peoples, yet - as Venus is the ruling influence and Mercury the directing - they are approached rather from the individual nature.
-
As to the appearances of the entity in the earth, and those as we find that make for influences in the present:
-
Before this the entity was in that land of the present nativity, during those periods when there were the early establishings of the various associations and activities with other countries; the recognition of other countries as to this being an organized government.
-
The entity then, in the name of John Jay, made a study of national and international relationships, as pertained to laws of the various effects of individuals and groups and their abilities to be considered as individuals and groups in combination with a nation’s activity. These throughout the experience made for manifestations in the activity of the entity, and the entity gained throughout.
-
But through those very associations and relations, as we find, combined with the experience before that, there is the inclination for the study of that as from the occult or the mystic. And rather would it be given that those from the spiritual forces as arise from such inclinations and influences, or of the soul’s development itself, would be those studies and not that as is ordinarily termed the spiritualistic seance or the delving into those things that pertain to communication with departed influences or forces.
-
But rather as the entity proclaimed in the experience before that, as Gamaliel - one of the seventy [See 933-1 on 7/28/31 saying he also was one of the teachers named Gamaliel] as presented during those experiences when the Master was in the earth and His activities were there in the temple, and during those periods when there were those distressing conditions as arose from the persecutions of those that had been His disciples or His apostles and His followers.
-
For Gamaliel then was a teacher, yea a rabbi; but had held to that principle that if it be of God, then man had better NOT interfere, and if it is only of man’s imagination and not founded in the truth it will come to naught of itself.
-
Throughout that experience the entity gained, because of those activities and those sojourns throughout. For there was not only the individual development, but those activities or developments which gave the opportunity for others to express themselves in their relationships to their fellow men - as to that held as their ideal of their Creator, and their relationships to same.
-
Much might be given as to the activities and the associations of the entity during that sojourn, and as to the study and the reading - which so easily becomes a part of the entity in the liking of stories, in its search for unusual things.
-
Let there be put into the hands of the entity those things as pertain to the activity of THIS entity as Gamaliel in its dealings with the Jewish law as might be applied in the experience of the Roman citizens, and the beauties of the Roman law as might be applied in the experiences of the Jewish followers in those periods of the entity’s activity.
-
Before that we find the entity was in the Chaldean land, when there were the armies of Alexander that made for the great changes that were wrought during those early periods of that activity.
-
The entity then was among the generals in the leading of those activities, and made for the instruments through which the walls of many of the cities were pulled down.
-
And especially during those early periods of this entity’s activities in its teen age, a most interesting experiment and experience may be had by those who may watch the entity in its first attempt to handle the bow and arrow, or a battering ram or the like.
-
In the name then Uzela, the entity from the material side gained; and in the present experience those interests in things mechanical of every nature become a part of the entity’s visions or dreams or desires in respect to same.
-
For the entity in its developing years will pass through many of those normal stages of liking to see self as the policeman, as the fireman, as those that will build some wonderful machine, as those that will judge or direct the ways of many peoples. And yet there will be seen a mercifulness rather than destructive forces in the experiences as these are watched, if those tendencies and weaknesses as indicated are developed for greater self-expression and the abilities of the entity brought forth in the ways and manners indicated.
-
Before that we find the entity was in the Egyptian land, during those periods when there were the turmoils and the strifes, and the choosing as it were upon the sides.
-
For the entity was among those of the counsellors to the King - but of the natives - and of the young King.
-
In the name then Sil-At-Bell, the entity gained; for while there were those turmoils and strifes, the abilities of the entity were to keep counsel, not only with the King but with those who made the preparations for the considerations of the return of the Priest; and the abilities of the entity to set about those activities in the associations and relationships with the Atlanteans as came in.
-
These made for developments that may yet find their expression in the activities of the entity, especially during this sojourn, if there is kept much of that before the entity as indicated as to how the balance must be kept in those things spiritual, mental, and the material things an outgrowth of same.
-
As to the abilities of the entity, then:
-
These as we find from the material and mental angles are very profuse, or such that in most any choice of the entity there may come material and mental successes. Yet if these are founded rather upon those things where the entity may become more and more the representative, as the lawyer, or as the arbitrator between the active forces of corporations that represent the activities of those things mechanical - and in the judging of those things as pertain to what is of a spiritual nature, and those that are purely of mental or man-made physical activities in relationship to spiritual things - these as we find offer the fields of service, the fields of expression, the fields in which there may come the greater help and glory, the greater development and the greater expansion in those abilities of the entity in the present.
-
Keep the face then toward the light and the shadows fall behind.
-
Train the entity and the child in the way it shall go and when it is old it will not depart from the SPIRITUAL imports as may be given.
-
Keep ever before same the abilities of self-expression and those desires of same. Keep from argumentations, and yet ever reason with the causes. But give always the spiritual import.
-
Keep from those tendencies for the entity to magnify the minor experiences or minor things, yet teach the CHILD to know that the little things in life and those that may not be purchased with money are the greater possessions that one may have.
-
And may the peace as came to Gamaliel - in doing right for Right’s sake, that all might have the opportunity of manifesting their love for their Creator in their own way and manner - guide and keep this entity.
-
For there is much that may be attained and much help may come to others through the very activities of this entity.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Are there any specific times in which to guard against the pulmonary or bronchial troubles? (A) During the next three to six years, especially.
-
(Q) Was the entity known to his present parents, [1158] and [1151], in other lives? (A) Especially in that as indicated in those periods when the entity rose to the defence of the apostles, and the study of the entity as a leader of Israel of the Roman’s application to that land.
Then the entity was personally known, and admired them for their sincerity.
-
(Q) What suggestions have you for his present training and development? (A) As has been indicated.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. See eleven Physical Readings obtained for him subsequently by his mother, the last being on 6/10/44.
R2. 3/19/43 Letter from Mrs. [1158] to EC: ”…First off, about [1188] and [1206] and the guidance Reading I was seeking for them. [1188] decided he preferred to stick it out where he is now, at the Boy’s School which I told you about the night we dined together in N.Y. [1188] felt changing this spring to another school would be like jumping from the frying pan into the fire. So, we are trying to work something of a constructive nature for the other boys in his present school, and I believe we sre succeeding. In other words, instead of walking out of the darkness there, [1188] decided to stick it out, and together we are trying to ‘light a candle’ in the midst of the darkness. One of the results has been a talk with a Mrs. […], whose boy […] is a problem, and I have urged her to get a Reading about him from you. I hope she does…”
R3. 8/27/49 He requested copy of his Life Rdg., saying he was very much interested personally in the E.C.F. work. [His father, Mr. [1151], had been buried on 8/11/49. [1188] had to consider ways of finishing his education, since his father’s estate was not sufficient to finance his college expense. He hoped to prepare himself, he wrote in 11/49, for a job in labor relations, which would require a course in such subjects as political science, economics, psychology, etc. “Another plan I had thought of was the possibility of majoring in political science, minoring in English, and then going on to take a course in law.”]
R4. 1/25/50 HLC’s ltr. to [1188]:
Dear [1188]:
Your life reading is in front of me.
There is every indication in the reading that law would be a natural outlet for the expressing of your innate talents and abilities. The reading is extremely encouraging and outlines for you the possibility of a very successful future.
On page two there is the specific suggestion even before the incarnations are described. In the paragraph beginning “Hence, as we find law, etc.”
It is interesting to note here that apparently you have two basic urges, one relating to the ability to argue and debate, showing a legal type of mind, and a definite interest in mechanics.
The Army training might well let you into law work that would involve handling settlements connected with machinery, rights for airways, railroads or the like. In other words, in your law work be on the watch for opportunity to apply your legal training to the handling of details concerning machinery or corporations directly concerned with machinery, such as railroads, airlines, etc.
There is great emphasis throughout the reading on the development on the spiritual side of your nature. No opportunity should be neglected to further your interest along spiritual lines.
It will be a pleasure to discuss this reading with you in detail some time when we can get together.
With best wishes for a Happy New Year.
Sincerely yours, Hugh Lynn Cayce
R5. 8/18/50 GD’s note: Young [1188] visited A.R.E. with his mother, Mrs. [1158], for one week, and he studied the entire files of readings for himself and his parents, Mr. [1151] and Mrs. [1158].
R6. 5/19/51 Letter to GD: I have just read the most recent issue of The Searchlight and find it one of the best I have read [OUTPOSTS OF CONSCIOUSNESS by Julia Chandler, April 1, 1951]. The discussion of Mrs. Allison’s so called visions brought back to my mind a subject of considerable interest which I wish you would keep to yourself except for those directly connected with the Association.
After reading my Life Rdg. last year I took sufficient interest in one of the ‘lives’ mentioned to read a biography that dealt with an incarnation during the Revolutionary period in America.
The book was of considerable length, or almost 500 pages, yet a very brief incident which the author touched on seemed to stick in my head: Several men including myself (in that life) stopped at a tavern on the road between Philadelphia and Washington. A girl of unusual beauty was waiting table. So much so, in fact, that I remarked to my colleagues how very much the color of her face resembled a CONCH SHELL. This comment was received with a great deal of humor and the story was retold often thereafter. Before leaving the tavern, however, an agreement was made never to tell anyone of the whereabouts of this charming girl.
This story brought back to my mind an event that occurred (in this, my present life), when I was four years old or thereabouts. At the time I was in Florida or some other semi-tropical place. I was walking along the shore with my nurse and came to some conch shells which had the usual pink color to them. I picked one up and admiringly asked the nurse what it was called. When she said conch shell something seemed to happen to me which gave me the feeling of being in a vacuum. I connected that conch shell with something so foreign to my present life that I momentarily forgot who I was or where I was. This annoyed the nurse and it was she who brought me out of my vagary. It took me a moment to adjust myself but when I did I was startled at the speed with which I forgot the details of my recent contemplation. I do remember that I turned to the nurse and asked her if people’s faces are ever the color of conch shells. She seemed very bored with the question which annoyed me considerably because I felt at the time that I had experienced something unusual and that I had good reason for asking the question. Yet I could no longer remember the reason.
I should be interested to hear what you or Hugh Lynn think of this.
R7. 5/21/51 GD’s note: “HL and I have just finished your letter and are fascinated by the account of your experience. Hugh Lynn said, ‘Boy, this is a honey!’ Mrs. [1505] had a similar experience in relation to a Williamsburg candlestick someone brought her as a gift. We are indexing all such accounts, of course, and the cloud of witnesses is mounting. Thank you so much for the report, which will be indexed Reincarnation - psychometry of past lives] under the case number, of course.
“I do hope that you and Mrs. [1158] are planning to come to the Congress. Let us know if we can help you with reservations, etc.
“Just had an encouraging report from a doctor, too - makes all our efforts seem so worth while.” Bye now, GD
R8. 8/8/51 Mother’s letter: “[1188] is going to summer school.”
R9. 3/10/52 “[1188] goes to R.O.T.C. Army Training Camp this summer, and I am hopeful that he will be able to finish his college course at … University next year.”
R10. 11/29/52 He commented favorably on The Searchlight 9/15/52, HLC’s THE MIND OF MAN: “I usually throw out most publications after I have finished with them, but I think I shall hold on to this one for a long time because it has a lasting value in establishing the relationship between mind and soul. What subject could be of graver concern!”
R11. 9/4/53 He sent a card from Cairo, Egypt where he had been visiting “most of the important points of interest with a very well guided study group.”
R12. 1/29/54 Mother’s note: “[1188] is now in the Army at Ft. Benning, Georgia for two months training before getting his regular assignment.”
R13. 11/15/54 Change of address card from the P.O. listed him as “Lt. [1188].”
R14. 3/11/57 Card: “I would like you to change my address again to … This means that I have decided that law school does not satisfy my needs. Instead, I am going to get a masters degree in labor relations; a course of action that is much more to the point!”
R15. 5/28/57 Letter: “I would very much like to meet [1208].”
R16. 2/17/58 Mother’s letter: “[1188] is working 7 days per week and going to night school, out in …, Wash.” [GD’s note: He visited A.R.E. before going out West and said he had decided he wanted to strike out on his own, away from his mother’s family - her brothers, big industrialists, wanted him to fall in line, along with their sons, in the family organization; his future would be assured but he wanted complete freedom to choose for himself.]
R17. 4/20/58 Letter: “Now at long last I am getting around to dropping you a line. My present work is with … Airplane Co., but, unfortunately, my job is quite unimpressive. What I do is to roam over the entire factory chasing down airplane parts which have been delayed in their manufacture and then I must do my best to get the parts moving again. The job is really very tiresome, but by the summer I believe I will have something with … which is more to my liking.
“I plan to tell you my exact plans including the fact that you people are the only ones whom I am clueing in. I am happy to do this because so much of my thinking gains direction from Cayce. Interestingly enough I think my plans and thoughts would have been just about the same anyway even without Cayce. Yet my reading simply adds assurance to what I believe is right within me. Many people wonder why I choose the field of business rather than something like teaching which, in fact, I think I would enjoy. I do not tell these people why I turn away from teaching and yet the reason is that something inside of me will not allow me to do so. I feel this so strongly that I am willing to say that I feel obliged to do just what I now am doing; namely, journeying to the far West to find employment. All of this may not lead me anywhere specifically and yet I don’t feel that I have any choice in the matter.
“My plan then is that I stay in this area maybe for two years, probably continuing my work with … During this time I am going to take and complete a law correspondence course offered by the LaSalle Extension Institute. Apparently, those who have taken this course may not have quite the same degree of understanding of legal philosophy as regular law students but in many instances they are able to pass State bar exams quite handsomely. When I first arrived in … I began to have second thoughts about my desire for legal training but I discovered to my disappointment that … had no evening law course. The University of Washington offers a part-time day program but after having had some experience in law school already I concluded that a program of this sort coupled with full-time employment would be prohibitively exhausting for me. Then I struck upon the possibility of taking the correspondence course mentioned above. It actually seems tailored to my needs. What I am after, you see, is some sort of legal background of a recognized nature COUPLED WITH some sort of experience in big business. I have no wish to practice law and so a knowledge of some of the finer legal points is not necessary. Had I found that the workable solution was to attend law school full time the advisability of taking the bar exam would not have interested me. Now that I will be taking a correspondence course I think I may want to take a bar exam if for no other reason than to make the fact of my legal background official. Interestingly enough the only State in the union that accepts a correspondence law course alone as a prerequisite to taking their bar is the nearby State of Montana. Thus when I complete this course I may then decide to go to Montana and set up a three-month residency, take the bar and at that point can consider my formal preparation for my life to be complete. You would be surprised if you knew the intense feeling I have that my life has already been planned and in time I will see how logically the plan has been laid out. Thus my main obligation is to follow these inward feelings of mine. I really think when my law training is finished that my path will begin to be clearer to me.
“Being out here in … I feel a great sense of independence which I very much want in order to work out this program. I naturally have told no one in the East and no member of my family including my mother any of the foregoing. Furthermore, I do not plan to tell anyone until I pass the bar. I think I mentioned to you in the fall that Mother has pretty much forgotten what was in my Life Reading and neither [1206] nor [1179] has read it. This is quite to my liking because I believe most people, including my family, would put the wrong emphasis on the information therein. To me my reading indicates that I have reason to believe that my life may offer me possibilities to do that which is of ultimate importance to me; namely, to glorify my Father in heaven in that particular way that God would like to direct me if I will but listen. So I, like those of you who are dedicated to carrying out Cayce’s work as your service to God, believe that I may have something of a unique nature to offer if I prepare myself properly and wait then for the time and place of His bidding. So far nothing has come my way to discourage me from this goal. I only ask that you let none of this information go any further than yourselves.
“One interesting experience I have had recently is with a young fellow whom I met at … but who, unfortunately for me, has just gone off for two years in the air force. I think he may end up by being one of my best friends. Anyway, I had a feeling about him that he might be swung over to the Cayce viewpoint. It is really remarkable the way a person can buy those copies of THERE IS A RIVER simply by going to the corner bookstore. So this I did and gave my friend a copy of the book to read. His reaction was of intense interest and I do believe that for a moment, at least, he accepted the premise of reincarnation. But I don’t know whether it is Western mores or what since I found out later that he just could not accept the premise on some ridiculous contention that somewhere in one of the Gospels Jesus says that a man lives but once and dies but once. It would not have been of any purpose to point out that the Bible also says that a man must be born again to achieve salvation, since this quite properly can be construed to refer to the act of conversion. So I shall have to relax my efforts until I come across more ammunition. I do take an interest in introducing this subject to people who appear to have open minds and whom I think seem to want their lives to have some purposeful meaning in concert with God’s will. For people of that sort I think Cayce doctrine is able to answer so many perplexing problems.”
R18. 8/13/58 [1188]‘s letter to Al and Gladys:
…, Washington
Dear Al and Gladys:
My membership runs out soon so I include a check for the coming year [$25 ck. turned over to Grace-Myra, GD 8/19/58 and ans’d by AET] when I wish to begin a sponsoring membership. Since I wanted to write you anyway, I would appreciate you conveying said check to the front desk.
I am having a most interesting time out here from the spiritual side of things. Also, I am starting to understand the difficulty if not impossibility of presenting to some people the fact of reincarnation. Among my various local associations I have met some religious fundamentalists, members of a Presbyterian church, and they happen to be the first fundamentalists I have ever known who are rational, intelligent people.
Since Paul says, “You die but once and then the judgement,” I know I could never get to first base in presenting any other theory. Yet implicit in their view of the evolution of civilization is the truth as we see it that all of us participated in that evolution. Otherwise there is no power on Earth that could taint us with original sin unless we did it to ourselves. These people talk of the way God’s only Son was sent because of man’s fall in the Garden, but if people were so bad back in those days why should that have such a direct or binding affect on us. The reason why I so completely back the philosophy of Mr. Cayce is that this philosophy appears to represent supreme concepts of life and man’s relationship to God. Further I believe that for any who were close to Mr. Cayce the privilege of gaining this advanced knowledge was a direct grant of God.
Anyway, getting back to my friends, they, of course, believe that one must accept Christ as his personal savior, that by that means one’s sins are forgiven, and the result of this decision is the instant granting of salvation and the act of being “born again”. Some of them are very advanced and live and breathe the Spirit of God so the theory they accept does not retard them. Thus, they accept salvation as an established fact for themselves but make no judgment on the souls who have not accepted what they have accepted.
But in my mind there are dangers in these concepts. If one considers himself saved he then is merely obliged to bide his time doing good works until the “day”. Next the sins of a saved soul become different from the sins of one who is lost. For the former the sin can in no way separate that soul from God because separation no longer exists. At the time of judgment, however, God will grant perfection to the saved souls. Thus the element of daily trying to unite closer with God does not have quite the same significance as it does to us. The uniting angle is considered differently because the question of uniting no longer exists. Another thing I have tried to explain to these people is that I abhor the implication that Christ died for our sins. The death of Christ, say I, is such a fantastically significant act that the emphasis must be placed on the positive side rather than the negative side. Thus, Christ did not die for our sins but rather for us. He died, just as Cayce said, as an act of surrendering His ego to God and as an example that we should symbolically do the same. Also, say I, we must not be anxious for God’s obligation to us but rather our obligation to God. Thus we must concentrate on that which is most significant which consists of making a daily dedication to God in our every breath. Then what results in eternity is God’s business. Otherwise, we are not doing right for right’s sake which is the only way God would ultimately have it. Instead we are supplanting an earthy reward for a heavenly reward. In this instance we are contemplating what we expect of God for what we do and we should expect nothing more from God then that which God wills. You can imagine the reaction to this thinking of people who consider the “decision” to be paramount and further thinking merely an interesting diversion.
I look upon my associations with them, however, as being very vital because it puts me in contact with Christian thinking people and is making it possible for me more closely to effect a daily dedication to God. All will go well as long as their fundamentalism doesn’t become too depressing.
Actually, the culprit is Paul. [GD’s note: Isn’t this interesting, considering that [1188] was Gamaliel, teacher of Paul?] I am sure God knew what He was doing when He determined that Paul should be the one to spread the Word. An indication of Paul’s complete acceptance of his beliefs is evident in his stoning of Stephen. With the World against Paul I doubt that any but the extreme approach would have succeeded. Yet, certainly you cannot take everything in his letters seriously. If the “wages of sin is death” there would be nobody alive at this moment.
You can see that if my present religious environment does not in the long run become depressing that I am going right along with my reading which states that I must make every effort to continue my spiritual growth.
Now I shall stop. I did think that you would enjoy these random thoughts.
My kindest regards, [1188]
P.S. As you might imagine I have not dared mention “reincarnation” to any of these people aside from the fellow whom I mentioned earlier.
R19. 11/3/58 [1188]‘s ltr. to Gladys and Al:
Dear Gladys and Al:
The enclosed letter you need not return. It is an expression of a remarkable phenomenon in which a fellow rejects Cayce after having received just about the full treatment. I mentioned the guy to you earlier. He read THERE IS A RIVER and elicited considerable interest in it. I even went so far as to show him my life reading; an act which since has caused me considerable anxiety since I believe that such a reading is in a certain sense sacred. Then when he still seemed to require further confirmation I told him of the flash-back experience I had as a child which was later supported by a biography of a former experience which recounted events in the flash-back. I told him of the way Uncle [1173] was cured and this was followed by some pretty good material to which the fellow refers in his letter. The reason for the Cayce rejection is apparent, of course. The fellow has found answers that satisfy him in fundamentalism and if he listened to the concept of reincarnation he could not hold to the belief that “a decision for Christ” was the one path to salvation irrespective of what one might do with his life afterwards. You might as well know that I recently sent off a letter to him in which I dismiss the whole subject of Cayce. Had I not shown him my reading I would not have done this; but that reading is hot stuff and I want him to forget it before he decides to present its contents to many of the people here with whom I come in contact.
My plans for the coming year are not definite. Probably I will remain out here awhile longer anyway. Yet I think I may manage to effect a job change which could be VERY MUCH to my advantage. One can never be sure that his steps were guided until the die has been cast and he has nothing more than the confirmation of hindsight. I do see my ideas of life becoming more firmly anchored, however. At …, for instance I see people who are possibly doing a more efficient job of their tasks than I might ever do. Yet I see their concentration on a narrower scope of activity so that if they were ever confronted with decisions that would determine wide spread future trends they would hopelessly bungle them. Thus education in some ways should center on certain original causes which embody all activities universally. Thus Thurgood Marshall is incapable of understanding what motivates the strong segregationist (except the selfish motive, in certain cases, and this is analyzed completely). Then the segregationist cannot understand whatever might be motivating Thurgood Marshall which is likewise of an unselfish nature. What I want, then, is to keep my thinking flexible enough to see what basically of a beneficial nature is embodied in all motivation.
Getting back to my plans, next year I may manage to secure a job which will give me much practical information regarding personnel work or labor relations. I probably could have done the same thing if I had stayed in … and worked at … Last year I broached this subject to those people back there. Still there was something about the ever present concern for my welfare which disturbed me. The concern I know was too much based on a courtesy for those who had gone before me and I just felt I must go elsewhere. When one goes unannounced to a strange city he might enjoy a certain limited success, but conditions must be fortuitous if he is to win over the ever present stiff competition. This would be my problem if I remained at … under the present circumstances.
Fortunately, I had an experience during the summer which may make for improved conditions…

Gentlemen:
The historical existence of the entity you mention in your letter has been satisfactorily established, I think. Thus, I thought I might drop you a note only to give you the name of a biography which I have found most helpful in studying this entity. It is: JOHN JAY, by Frank Monaghan, The Bobbs-Merrill Company, New York, 1935.
Sincerely, [1188]
R21. 12/21/63 Christmas card indicated he was still an employee of the same airplane company out West. “I suspect that the chance is better than even that I will remain in the Northwest.”
