This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 23rd day of December, 1936, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [1311], new Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mr. [853].

Time of Reading 418 … Set bet. 3:30 to 4:30 P. M. (12/22/36). St., Taken 11:15 to 11:35 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, N.C. (12/23/36)
-
EC: Yes. (That’s where he was yesterday; he’s at 19 now.)
-
Now, as we find, the disturbing conditions have been of long duration.
-
In some respects these are quite serious and a great deal of this has been produced by improper application for disturbing conditions.
-
As we find there have been for some time, first lacerations and then a hardening of the walls of the stomach. With palliatives, and these mostly sedatives, there has been produced through the gall duct area, portions of the jejunum and the colon, from these very strains as produced, inflammation of the connecting membranes - or the mucous membranes as surround the intestinal system; the walls even of same becoming inflamed.
-
Hence the acute pains that have been through portions of the body at times; the inability of perfect assimilation, the heaviness as to the disturbance when the body attempts to move about much; headaches, nausea, constipation and the like have been the resultant conditions throughout the disturbing forces.
-
As we would find, if these are applied in their proper proportions and their proper relationships, these may bring help and relief for this body - if they are applied in the correct way, and if the correct mental attitude is kept:
-
Each day for three to four days at the time, we would apply the Castor Oil Packs for one hour - and during the hour we would change the packs two or three times. Use heavy flannels, folded, dipped into Castor Oil and applied hot. Fold the flannel two or three times, and put across the abdomen and especially over the lower portion of the liver area, the whole of the right side and the left side - of course extending across both.
-
During that time begin with taking at least half an ounce of Yellow Saffron Tea each day. This would be about a level teaspoonful of Saffron (the American Saffron) in a quart of water, allowed to steep - or pour boiling water over same and let it steep for thirty minutes; then strain and set in a cool place to keep to take during each day - half an ounce to an ounce of same. This may be divided into two to three doses.
-
Begin also with Milk of Magnesia; tablespoonful each evening AFTER the Oil Packs are taken.
-
Of a morning after breakfast, take half a teaspoonful of Milk of Bismuth.
-
Each of these (the Bismuth, also the Magnesia) would be taken, of course, in a full glass of water; stirred in same.
-
After the three days of the Oil Packs, rest from them for two to three days; then take them over again.
-
In the diet: Beware of hog meats of ANY kind! Let this be rather the diet:
-
Use citrus fruit juices of morning; whole wheat or rye toast. Occasionally an egg. Or cereals may be taken (preferably cooked cereals), but do not take the fruit juices AND cereals at the same meal!
-
Fowl or fish or lamb. No red meat (or rare meats) at any time. Beef juices may be given, but not steak or roast; and not too great a quantity of even the beef juice.
-
The vegetables that grow above the ground. No white potatoes. Yams may be taken; occasionally turnips, but the tops of all vegetables, principally, rather than the roots. Spinach, not too much - for the liquor or water from same (where it is cooked) is better than the spinach itself for the body.
-
Keep these up in those ways and manners indicated.
-
Because the Packs are left off for a day or two, do not leave off the Saffron too - nor the other eliminants and absorbents.
-
Instead of too much of the cathartics, use enemas - and in the enemas use rather strong saline solutions; that is, to two quarts of water put a heaping teaspoonful twice of table salt in same. Do not have the water temperature higher than the temperature of the body.
-
Do these, and keep the mental attitude in that way of not only being better but being better FOR some practical, spiritual purpose.
-
And let the meditations of the heart, let the thoughts of the body be turned rather to the Creative Forces.
-
Do not rail at anyone. Do not hold grudges. Do not hold ANY of those tendencies that have so long made for disturbing conditions in the experience.
-
Because others have neglected or do neglect or mistreat or take advantage, know that if ye rail on them ye are creating poison within thine own system. But if ye do not rail on them, it turns upon THEM! But BLESS them, rather.
-
We are through with this reading.

Mr. Edgar Cayce Va Beach, Va
Dear Mr. Cayce:-
I have your readings and all it’s instructions and I am unable to carry them out in person, as I have no one that can use these Castor Oil packs, and make this Beef juices. I am at present times with some friends due to my wife, Mrs. […] has been called to the bedside of her mother, which was about 10 days ago. Since getting your letter, I have wondered if it could be possible that I came down to Va Beach and enter myself under your care, and if such can be arranged, please give me the best rate you have including the cost of attendance, and full treatment. Please understand that I have no money, but have many friends of whom will help me, and I am pretty sure from your reading it fits my case exactly.
I however hope my wife can return home in the next few days, and as I am forced to go to some place to stay, I think she will agree with me, that if I can be placed under your care, it would be better than going into some hospital or Sanitarium, where they would not understand how carry out the treatments that you prescribe.
I will promise to do as I am told, and use every ounce of strength, I have to go exactly as you instruct.
Thanking you for your early reply, I am
Yours resp [1311]

Dear Mr. Cayce-
Attached is $1.00 in payment for membership for the month of Jany. I am now entering into the A&D Home, and will now begin on your treatments but I note from your reading you do not mention at what time of each day I am to take this, yellow Saffron Tea. It seems the druggist in this city knew but very little about this but, one of the druggists called up the wholesale house here, and found this article.
Instead of being yellow is [it] has an appearance of being golden yellowish brown. Now I think I understand about the balance of the treatment, but I do not know the time to take this tea, in each day. Will you please let me hear from you by return mail, and if any instruction you wish to give, please let me know. Instead of addressing me 418 …, address me c/o A&D Home, North Edgewerth St. at Greensboro, N.C. My wife could give me these treatments, but she has to travel and cannot be at home with me.
May the Lord bless you for the help you have suggested to me.

R3. 1/5/37 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [1311]:
Dear Mr. [1311]
Pardon me for the seeming delay in answering yours of 28th, but have been so very busy since the 23rd; from one to four calls every day most for emergency readings has kept me on the go, so that have not had chance to write a letter scarcely. Certainly wish it were possible for me to say “come on here”, but we have not had a place for the care of people for several years. Did have such but that was closed in 30 and have never been able to open another.
Do hope that circumstances will be such that you may have the advantage of the suggestions soon. Wish might offer some suggestion on this, but have none just now.
Know we will be glad to do what ever we can at any time and do hope it will soon be, so you can have some one to help you.
With all good wishes, and trusting some way will be opened for you.
With all good wishes
Sincerely, [signed] Edgar Cayce

Dear Mr. [1311]
Just wrote you a day or so ago, hope letter doesn’t go astray, but am just in receipt of yours of 4th and will reply at once. The time to take the Saffron tea should be about the middle of the morning say 10 A.M. and Three in afternoon about tablespoonful or a little more. Feel sure you will find that will ease the trouble of gas on stomach.
The Beef Juice, suppose they sent you the way to make that it is not broth but pure beef juice. Take about tablespoonful but in very small sips. The rest hope you will be able to have. The rubs are about the most important I feel. Thanks for the contribution, let me hear from you ever you have chance.
With kindest regards
Sincerely, [signed] Edgar Cayce

Attention
Mr. Edgar Cayce:-
I have your letter of Jany 5th and 6th and note the contents of the same in reply. Wish to say, I have carried out all instructions you have given, and to date I wish to advise you how I feel. I am at present time extremely nervous, and have no desire to eat, followed afterward with much swelling from my right side with dizziness, which forces me to spend much of my time in the bed, which at present I can see no improvement, and I am very anxious to have you give me another reading, and advise me the cause of my failing to make the improvement, as would expected.
You of course know that I was operated in June 1936, and in 1930, I had an operation for hemorrhoids, which from this part, left me in a very tight condition from this part. In 1921 - was my first venture on an operating table which at that time was for adhesions and the appendix was taken from me. I got along fine until the 1930 hemorrhoid operation, and it was thus that I began to have this trouble. In excess of this, I am the unfortunate victim of having two spinal punctures one in 1930 with hemorrhoids, the other upon an examination in Duke’s hospital to examine the fluid and it seems ever since then, I lapsed into a nervous state, but I believe I can overcome this if I can get some help or aid to destroy this trouble in my right side. I use every effort I can to forget this, but during the day I have a constant pulling, just below my liver which settles in my lower right colon, and intestines.
I have now taken two of the packs and have taken the yellow Saffron Tea, twice daily, at 10 am and 3 pm, and the Milk of Bismuth once a day shortly after breakfast, and the Milk of Magnesia before retiring each night. I think the above explains the faithful way, of carrying out the treatments you have instructed for me and I am at loss to know, what causes this dizziness, that comes upon me each day with headaches generally follow. I believe I failed to explain to you about my having to go to a dentist for the cleaning of my teeth, which has been giving me much trouble caused from bad gums, and the dentist said they was not worth cleaning, that the gums was absorbing into my system much pus and if allowed to go on would cause heart trouble, and from this cause I had him to pull all of my teeth [with] exception of two in the lower part of my mouth, and to present time, I have no teeth to chew my food, and this dentist advised to leave them out until about June, when he would put in a plate, that would be for my regular use, after the gums had their shrinkage to a normal condition, and I guess this too with other conditions causes this extreme nervousness.
In addition to this I have a constant desire to urinate, which has a tendency of burning as it comes from me. I have wondered if this was from a cause of bladder irritations or from the kidneys.
I am at present time residing in the A&D Home, 317 North Edgewerth St and I will thank you to advise me further that can be done about the above matters I have explained above.
Resp yours [1311]

Dear Mr. [1311]
Have yours of 18th [19th], and note what you have to say, think you will have to keep up the suggestions a bit longer. Be sure to keep up your eliminations with the Enemas, and feel very sure you will be finding improvements, if you keep your diet in the way suggested. Try this out for another two weeks any way and then let me hear from you.
Do hope you will soon be feeling lots better, but study that given over again. Do all of that but nothing more, nothing less. Then you will be able to see what comes of it.
With all good wishes
Sincerely, [signed] Edgar Cayce

Mr. Edgar Casey [Cayce] Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Casey [Cayce]:
Mr. [1311] has been taking your treatments for the past three weeks and he says he feels no better, still complains of the same trouble. It seems as if this trouble is just below where his appendix was removed. He says he feels like something is hanging and pulling. This also feels sore and pains him. He seems not to have any faith in your treatments at all. Do you think, as he doesn’t have any faith in your treatments that they will do him any good? He is in a sanitarium in Greensboro, and they have gone strictly by your orders with diet and everything.
Please let me hear from you what you think, by return mail to Asheville, N.C. c/o Swannanoa-Berkley Hotel.
Respectfully yours, Mrs. […]

Dear Mrs. […]
Just in receipt of yours of 23rd. Note what you have to say about Mr. [1311], to be sure there is no reason he should take the suggestions if he does not care to, and feels there is nothing to be gained from same. That is entirely up to him. We can only offer the suggestion - up to him whether he uses it or not. Do hope he gets relief. Know we are glad to try and help when ever we can.
Thanking you sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce

B1. 5/31/36 Wife’s letter: “Mr. [1311] has been sick about 6 yrs. and has been off the road a year this past April, and he has no money or insurance. I am his only support and my funds are limited.”
B2. 12/6/36 Wife’s letter: “I have written you twice before about Mr. [1311]. When I wrote you last he decided on an operation which did not good, and he is now having his teeth taken out. He complains with one side and all the doctors can’t find anything to give him. He sleeps good and has a good appetite. Now, Mr. Cayce, if you can tell me his trouble and what to do and at what price, I want to get a reading for him.”
B3. 12/10/36 Mr. [1311]‘s letter: “You of course have had the detail of my trouble placed before you by Mrs. […] [my wife], as she wrote you of the operation I had in June, and have had my teeth withdrawn, so this you are now aware of. My trouble seems to center into my lower stomach, with pains mostly on the right side, with a great deal of gas, with extreme nervousness, and it is this part I am much interested in.”
B4. 12/15/36 EC’s letter: “Have yours of the 10th, with application for membership to Ass’n and the request for the physical reading, also the $1 enclosed.” [Appointment was made for 12/22/36, 3:30 to 4:30 P.M.]
