Time of Reading 10:55 to 11:05 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Tennessee. (Physical Suggestion)

1. EC: Yes, we have the body, [1508]; this we have had before.

2. As we find, there are acute conditions arising from congestion, cold, poisons in the system from throat, head, and the soft tissue and the effect to the activity of the circulation through lungs, heart and digestive system.

3. These as we find may become very serious unless there are drainages set up, and a reaction to reduce not only the temperature but to produce a reaction where the circulation may take on more of the resistances in the bodily forces themselves.

4. First, in making applications:

5. Massage the acute conditions in throat, and in the face, as well as the chest and the upper digestive system, with a combination of three parts Laudanum to one part Aconite.

6. Then apply over same the saturated solution of Epsom Salts, until these pains and the temperature are reduced.

7. Also use very hot bath for the feet, with mustard or pine oil - either or both of these may be put in the hot water. This should be to the knees or even higher. Afterwards RUB the soles of the feet and the lower limbs with an equal combination of Mutton Suet, Spirits of Turpentine and Spirits of Camphor. And massage especially the feet, keeping the feet very warm.

8. We would also have immediately a deep osteopathic manipulation as would set up drainages from the lungs.

9. Also within the twenty-four hours give an enema to relieve the strains through the alimentary canal.

10. In the evening, if there are some improvements, we would dissolve five grains of Calcidin in one ounce of warm water - keep this warm and give a sip of same every fifteen to twenty minutes, until there is a full iodine reaction in the system; to reduce those effects of a strept arising from infectious forces in the blood stream.

11. ONLY the diets that are liquid or semi-liquid; beef juices, citrus fruit juices and the like. These may be necessary to repeat on the morrow if there is the improvement shown.

15. (Q) What special areas need the deep osteopathic manipulations? (A) As indicated, the drainages from the lung, throat and head. These then are the upper dorsal and through the cervical - and, to be sure, with the setting up of drainages, or the drawing away, or the setting up of blood flow, the lumbar area should be coordinated with same gently.

These may be necessitated each day for two to three days, then the rest of these - of course - may be changed according to the conditions as arise.

16. (Q) Should the Epsom Salts Packs be given before the treatment osteopathically? (A) We should give these immediately! Then, when -

R1. 1/6/38 Aunt [760]‘s letter: “As soon as I stopped talking to Hugh Lynn [who phoned the reading] I commenced the treatment and phoned for Dr. Shackleford. By six o’clock his temperature was reduced to 99 degrees, but his rectum was where he was suffering and I have never seen such suffering in my life. He suffered until he was so weak he was helpless, had to lift and turn him in the bed and use bed pan. I just can’t explain the condition his seat and rectum was in. The trial of waiting on him was awful. When Dr. Shackleford came and examined him I thought he would die. Dr. Shackleford said he must be operated on. There was an inward abscess as well as two small ones on the outside and they must be drained. Well, [1508] suffered until yesterday morning. We didn’t take off our clothes or stop all night long, just working with him constantly. Yesterday morning he was so lifeless he said, ‘I can’t stand this much longer if I don’t get some relief.’ He began to have smothering spells, so at 10:30 [his wife] phoned for the Dr. Ballard that Dr. Shackleford recommended, and he said he must be operated on at once. At one o’clock the ambulance came and took him to St. Thomas Hospital and he was operated on at 1:30. The doctor said he got over two ounces of thick, yellow fluid-pus that would not run. He was on the operating table 35 minutes. Of course he was lifeless the rest of the afternoon. A nurse and intern were with him for an hour and a half after they brought him to his room; had a needle in both legs giving him saline solution which was not finished when we left the hospital at six o’clock…[…] [wife] stayed with him all night. I went back with […] this morning to stay a while. […] came home for some sleep, but the doctor gave orders that nobody but the nurse go in the room today, he must have absolute rest and quiet, but that hospital is the noisiest place I ever saw in my life. We went in to see him and he said he felt so much better. He had been bathed and fresh pajamas on, but they didn’t want anybody there when they unpacked the rectum and dressed it again. I don’t know how he can stand it. They gave us every assurance that he would get along alright, but […] asked me please not to leave for a day or so yet and [1508] asked me, too, not to go yet. If I am sure he is doing alright I will leave Saturday night. Before we got the reading we were giving strained fruit juice, beef tea, and strained chicken broth, and the only relief from gas was enemas, so he was well prepared for the operation.”

R2. 1/8/38 Mrs. [760]‘s letter: “[1508] didn’t seem so well, awfully weak and nervous, couldn’t stand anybody to touch the bed - was here all day with […] and am here again today. Although he says he feels better today, than he has at all. The doctor took a little of the packing from the rectum this morning. They have had to change the outside dressing numbers of times daily. I don’t feel like he is getting the proper nourishment here, in fact, I know he is not. But his surgeon doctor has got a head on him like a ram. He is only given milk and fruit juices. I commenced giving him beef tea as soon as I got here, but he hasn’t had any beef tea since he has been here…

”…I phoned to Dr. Shackleford after [1508] was operated on and told him I felt like [1508] ought to have his treatments right along, and he said he would talk to Dr. Ballard and Dr. Ballard told [1508] Dr. Shackleford was coming out to give him some treatments, but he hasn’t come yet…”
