This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 12th day of January, 1938, in accordance with request made by the self - Miss [1517], new Associate Sponsored Membership in the Association for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., by David E. Kahn Research Fund, recommended by the friend, Mrs. Addison S. Pratt, 150 East 48th St., New York City, who attended our November meeting at The Psychical Research Society in N.Y.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:40 to 11:50 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, [1517].
-
Now as we find, conditions that arise from the arthritic reaction are effects and not causes.
-
For in most all of such conditions there is a source of infection that affecting the system brings about in the lymph and the activity of the coordination of eliminations the disturbances that produce the varied forms of an arthritic disturbance.
-
These, as has been indicated in this body, have at times been helped; by the removal of the poisons from the system; but not having removed the cause or the source of the infectious forces, then this has returned more or gradually rebuilded the effects in the system.
-
As we find, the source in this particular case is from a condition in the activity of the pelvic organs when there was an injury to the coccyx end of the spine.
-
This pressure upon the system as related to the activities of the coordination between the sympathetic and cerebrospinal impulses that direct the circulation through the portions of the body brings about the disturbance.
-
These as we find may be materially aided. While it will be somewhat of a long process, we find that in consideration of the help that may be had it would be very short.
-
As we find then, these would be the manners for it:
-
First we would have corrections CHIROPRACTICALLY made in the coccyx and the lumbar, and in the lower dorsal areas - such as by Miller.
-
Then apply - that is, during the periods that the corrections are being made - the low form of electrical vibrations that HEAT the body. These would be the low form of the reverse coil, through those activities of the Sinusoidal Ray. This would only be given sufficiently long to arouse the activity of the dormant associations and connections between the cerebrospinal and the sympathetic system, you see. Hence the connections would be made to the lumbar and the coccyx areas AND to the lacteal duct center - very low, and only about three or four such treatments.
-
Then leave off the electrical vibrations entirely, but continue to stimulate through the corrections the activities in the areas necessary - and give internally very small quantities of Chloride of Gold AND Soda. These solutions should be made separately, and the dosage taken from same; that is:
-
The Gold Solution would be in the proportions of one grain of the Chloride of Gold to one ounce of Distilled Water.
-
The Soda Solution would be in the proportion of three grains of the Bicarbonate of Soda to an ounce of Distilled Water.
-
Then, once each day, preferably in the evening, the dosage would be two drops of the Soda Solution and one drop of the Gold Solution in half a glass of water - taken immediately when the two solutions are put into the water.
-
Continue taking in this manner for a period of three weeks, then leave off for a period of three weeks.
-
During the period that the properties are left off, give the low form of electrical vibration in the Wet Cell Appliance CARRYING Gold - or the vibration from the solution of Gold in the proportion of two grains Chloride of Gold to six OUNCES of Distilled Water. This is a very weak solution, but if it is carried vibratorially in this manner it will be sufficient in the beginning. At the next period the quantity given vibratorially in this manner would be increased.
-
The attachments of the Appliance would be made as follows: The small copper plate would be attached first, to the lumbar plexus - 4th lumbar; while the larger nickel plate would be attached last (this carrying the Gold Solution, you see), to the umbilicus and lacteal duct plexus.
-
Attach the Appliance in the above manner each day for thirty minutes, for the three weeks.
-
Then commence at the beginning of the entire treatments outlined and repeat the whole procedure; but at the next round of the Appliance increasing the quantity of the Gold Solution as indicated.
-
Throughout the entire periods keep up the manipulations in the coccyx area, the lumbar, the 9th dorsal; and of course coordinating the upper dorsal and cervical area with the rest of the system.
-
Be mindful of the diets.
-
Keep well the eliminations by diets as well as by the general respiratory reaction.
-
Do these and as we find we may bring a much nearer normal condition for this body of [1517].
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) About when was the injury to the coccyx and in what manner? (A) This was an injury in some times past. This was some years even before the first - This was, as we find, in eighteen or nineteen (‘18 or ‘19).
-
(Q) After I recovered to such an extent, what did I do to cause a relapse? (A) As indicated, the poisons from the condition were relieved but the CAUSES were NOT relieved; hence gradually grew back again.
Do these things as we find, keeping the attitude of a prayerful meditative mind throughout.
Be consistent, be persistent.
- We are through for the present.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 1/18/38 [1517]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Thank you for the report of the reading and your letter. The report came at noon on Saturday and I delayed answering until I had something definite to report as to my immediate procedure. I do not have anything yet, however as I have not yet heard from Dr. Miller. I called her up yesterday (Monday) morning. She had not yet looked at her mail so was unfamiliar with the report. She promised to call me to talk it all over when she had read the report. At this writing (Tuesday afternoon) I have not yet heard from her but, undoubtedly I will.
I am not the least in doubt that the procedure you have outlined will give me immediate and permanent help. Perhaps, for the sake of your record, I had better go into past conditions. I did have a very serious fall in the spring of 1922. I was standing on a verandah, the floor of which was about five or six feet from the ground. I leaned on the rail and it gave way, throwing me flat on my back. I was alone and I think I fainted for a minute. Then, with help I managed to get up. The stiffness lasted about two or three months as I remember. At my next menstrual period I had a hemorrhage and they continued occasionally until I had one which made the hysterectomy necessary three years later.
I do not remember a previous fall and I do not believe I ever told any of the various doctors who have treated me of that one. It has not been in my mind at all, which makes me all the more sure that the suggestion from you is absolutely correct and nothing I might have thrown off through telepathy. I certainly did not think of it during the hour of the reading which I spent in meditation alone. When I first became very much disabled I had an osteopath for four months regularly, later I had another one for a time and at another time a chiropractor. I am sure I spoke to none of them of the fall.
Now the only question in my mind is ways and means. If I wish to continue the treatment as I should I shall have to make it as inexpensive as possible. With that in view I should like to ask several questions:
I live in the Columbia University section of New York City. It is difficult for me to get around and I cannot afford taxis always. Do you, by any chance, have any doctor you recommend nearer this section? If not, I will, of course, go to Dr. Miller by some means.
My cousin, a physician in San Francisco, in an effort to help me, sent me last fall a radio-therapy apparatus to give my joints deep heat. I am enclosing the circular describing it so that you may know what kind of unit it is. Do you think it would be possible for me to use this unit at home for the heat? Is there any way, the gold carrying wet cell appliance could be used on this unit? Or must all of this be done in the doctor’s office under her supervision?
The doctor will prepare and give me the gold and sodium solution, will she not?
I do believe that the treatment prescribed will help me, I have had the feeling all along that you were going to point the way to my becoming well again. But I wish to plan it all so that I may be able to carry it out.
I thank you again for your help and kindness. I will keep you informed as to my progress. In the meantime, I should appreciate hearing more about the heat treatments and the other inquiries.
Yours in gratitude, [1517]
P.S. May I have the circular in regard to my short wave unit back when you are through with it? Thank you. Also, I forget to say above that one reason why I never gave the fall a thought as the cause of my trouble is that I have not at any time had arthritis in my back. That does not follow but if I had had trouble with my spine, I would probably have thought of the fall.
R2. 1/18/38 [1517]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I have been very fortunate. A friend, whom I had told about your organization and the reading, sent me the enclosed check, which I am glad to forward to you as payment for an associate membership. My friend is very much interested in your work and is delighted to do this both to help the organization and me. I appreciate your kindness in extending to me a sponsored membership and am glad that that membership may now be offered to someone else.
I have not yet heard from Dr. Miller but will not call her again until I hear from you as to whether you recommend some similar person in this neighborhood or near here. I shall also be interested to hear more fully as to what the gold carrying vibratory treatment entails. Perhaps it is something small which I could attach to the circuit and use at home. In any case I intend to follow the advice in the reading as I am sure it is a correct guidance.
I believe that, if I trust God to arrange it all for me, I will find a way open to do just what I should do. I have been praying and am now awaiting guidance as to my plan. Just at present, the way is not clear but I am sure it will be.
I shall let you know just how I pursue the plan and will keep you informed as to my progress. Thank you.
Sincerely Yours, [1517]
R3. 1/20/38 EC’s letter to [1517]: “Glad to have yours of 18th, is very interesting from many angles, but the most interesting is that apparently the source of the trouble is explained - then the manner of eliminating same must be in line also.
“Am sure you are anxious to hear from Dr. Miller, Miss [1517], when the information suggests a certain one to administer the suggestions - our experience is they will do it better than any one else. Think Dr. Miller has a machine for giving the Gold solution, if not you can tell her you are sure that the Assn. will send her one for that purpose.
“Have seen the Unit as described in the data you sent me, and am sure it is very fine for some conditions, but you will see many more in Dr. Miller’s office that you may possibly have thought possible. And every one for a special purpose. Am looking forward to hearing from Dr. Miller. Ask her to write me about your case and please keep me informed as to how every thing progresses, won’t you.
“Know we are all Praying with and for you, for a speedy recovery for you. With all good wishes…”
R4. 1/21/38 EC’s letter to [1517]: “Thank you for yours of 18th with enclosure, such experiences are certainly proof there is a force that works with such undertakings that we wonder how much we understand about them. Was very lovely of your friend and we appreciate it.
“Wrote you yesterday believe it was, feel sure you will hear from Dr. Miller, and arrangements will be such that you can get the whole treatment, and with same feel sure you will have very definite results. Heard from a Dr. near Boston, who has a case that seems most remarkable, where a young man [1215] had his spine crushed, and he was paralyzed from neck down, has been that way for several years, and seemed little hope for him. They had first reading for him last March, began treatment in April, Dr. sent us first report yesterday
- he has regained use of his hands, and feeling is gradually returning in whole body, with a little movement in lower limbs. And he feels now that he may gain very good use of his body. Isn’t that lovely. All praise to the Giver of all good and perfect gifts.
“Hope to hear you have started with your treatments soon…”
R5. 1/25/38 Letter from Mary A. Miller, D.C.: “[1517] conveyed to me your message that if I did not have the apparatus for the use of the copper and nickel plates, you would forward one to me. Now the apparatus I have is a McIntosh Polarsine 1158 model and gives the various low wave currents. If you have a galvanic machine that is better adapted to your work I should like to know more about it and, if desirable, secure one. I do not have the copper and nickel electrodes referred to by [1517].”
R6. 1/29/38 EC’s letter to Dr. Miller: “Hugh Lynn is now away, but will try and have him get one of the appliances together for you so you may give Miss [1517] the gold treatment as suggested.”
R7. 2/4/38 [1517]‘s letter to EC: “I have been taking my treatment about a week now and am so happy to be in touch with a person like Dr. Miller. I am more sure than ever that the reading is absolutely correct and that Dr. Miller is the person to help bring me back to normal again.
“I ordered the Wet Cell apparatus yesterday but Dr. Miller tells me that she has not yet secured the Chloride of Gold for internal use, - a drop each day as prescribed in my reading. She finds there is some question whether she should use white gold, yellow gold or a reagent. I told her that I would write to you about it as we are very desirous of beginning that part of the treatment as soon as possible.
“If it is not too much trouble, could you let me know very soon just what we should have. Also, is there any possibility of securing it through the Home Health Remedies Corporation? If there is, might I know the price so that I may order it? We find that it is very expensive here and I do have to think of that side of it.
“I wonder if I may ask you to tell the Secretary of the Association, Miss Gladys Davis, that I am delighted to know that the $20.00 which my friend so kindly paid for me, can be used for someone who needs it. I shall write to the mother also to tell her how happy I feel about my own reading.
“Thank you for your help. I shall hope to hear about the gold soon and, if it possible, should like to secure it through you. Somehow I will have the feeling that it is better that way.
“P.S. You probably realized that Miss [1531] who has appealed to you for a life reading is the person who gave me $20.00 for an associate membership. She is very much interested.”
R8. 3/4/38 Mrs. [1402]‘s letter to HLC: ”…Dr. Mary Miller wants me to say a word about Miss [1517]; the platella [patella?] on the right leg which was apparently ankylosed is now freely movable and we hope - as soon as the gold and soda solution has had a chance to work - that we will see even more spectacular results… Recently she inspected Miss [1517]‘s WCA which was just a bit puzzling in one or two spots. Miss [1517] has written for more detailed instruction, so I presume that this will soon be cleared up.”
R9. 5/23/38 [1517]‘s letter to EC: “I think that it is time that I tell you how I am getting along. I have found Dr. Miller very helpful and am sure that she will cure me utterly in time. It is not so quickly to be accomplished as I wished, but my condition is very acute and I believe that Dr. Miller has made more progress toward recovery than I would have believed possible. I did not realize when I began the treatment that my entire body had become so rigid, although I did know that I could not do many things I was able to do several years ago.
“I think that my own help has not been so consistent as it might have been as, even though I know that there is a power which takes care of me and brings everything to its proper ending, I have from time to time allowed myself to be troubled and worried over material conditions. Dr. Miller has been a great help in keeping me in the right mental state also. My muscles are responding and every week finds my range of mobility a bit increased.
“I am following the treatment described in your reading but one question has come up about which I would like to ask your advice. Dr. Miller tells me that the [1553] case is using dry cell batteries instead of the wet cell appliance which I am using. I wonder if I could use the batteries also. They would be much easier for me to handle and less cumbersome to have about. If I may use them, would you tell me what strength to buy. Also, may I have from the Health Home Remedies Company more gold solution of the proper strength for the next period. I believe that the strength is to be increased each time. I do not like to trouble you but I have so much faith in your reading that I wish to follow all your suggestions. Thank you very much…”
R10. 5/25/38 EC’s letter to [1517]: “Thanks for yours of 23rd - am happy to know you are on the improve - am sure you have found Dr. Miller a very wonderful help - your condition is such that is will require patience and persistence - but if you exercise both you may expect to gain a great deal of good.
“Have had several very similar conditions in various parts of the country - and where they have adhered consistently to the suggestion, help has come.
“Thanking you again - and may your improvement continue. Know am glad to try and help whenever possible…”

B1. 1/5/38 [1517]‘s ltr. to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I thank you for giving me such an early date, I did not expect to have the benefit of your attention so soon. As you know, my trouble is physical, for I am sure that when that is cleared up, the way will be pointed out for the betterment of my economic situation. I am convinced that both health and productiveness are in store for me and am looking forward to my reading as I will do everything in my power to follow any suggestions made and I am definitely sure you are going to aid me.
Following is my case history on which I will base my questions:
1924- First symptoms of arthritis in swelling of small joints of hands and toes- I did not recognize them, however. Later, pain in shoulder which would not respond to heat or rest.
1925- Hysterectomy, after which pains were renewed. Diagnosed as arthritis and had teeth X-rayed and thoroughly gone over. Also took injections, colon treatments and various drugs. I was working steadily full time during all this period except the time off for operation and convalescence.
1926- Pain in joints became acute and I became so crippled that I had to stop work and go to my family. I expected to take a better position in the fall.
Summer- five weeks at at Mt. Clemens Fall- Tonsil operation- frontal sinus operation By Christmas I could hardly move, walked with difficulty with two canes. Had osteopathic treatment and rigid diet.
1927- Grew steadily weaker- Had surface tumor operation. Surgeon recommended feeding me up. Said, however, that tumor had no connection with arthritis. I began to grow better. Went to California in the fall.
1928- Returned from California in June very much better. Improved steadily, used only one cane.
1929- Went to work with old organization half time in the fall. Work hard but everyone kind and hours short. Used cane one year.
1930- Gave up cane, continued to work, felt better.
1931- Reached the peak of feeling good, work harder.
1932- Began to go down so gave up work in the fall.
Since that time I have done a bit of work here and there but have not been able to keep at it. I am now trying to earn a bit writing articles but have not been good enough yet. However, I know, that, if I am to be successful, I will be, and if I am not, something will come to me. So that does not worry me.
What has worried me is that a year and a half ago my condition became acute again and has become steadily worse with the exception of ten weeks when I had gold injections. They were an alleviation not a cure, even the doctor did not offer permanent relief. I am now using some radio-therapy from a machine sent me by a doctor cousin in the west who believes that that sort of deep heat treatment will help me. My chief difficulty now is pain and stiffness in the right knee and left ankle. The other joints trouble me some but do not forbid movement.
I should like to know:
What was the original cause of my trouble? After I recovered to such an extent, what did I do to cause a relapse? What shall I do now to rid myself of my present acute condition? When I am rid of it, what rules of living shall I follow to remain well? Is there anything I can do, not only to further my physical health but to contribute something to the world?
I shall observe the meditation hour. I cannot tell you how grateful I am for your kindness. Your great gift has truly been given to the right person.
Sincerely, Yours, [1517]
