Scientist) This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 27th day of April, 1938, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [1579], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Miss [1402].

1. GC: You will have before you the entity, and also the various problems which confront her regarding her father, […], and other members of her family. You will give a mental and spiritual reading for this entity and answer the questions which will be asked.

2. EC: Yes, we have the enquiring mind, [1579].

3. In the mental influences and forces as we find, owing to the anxiousness regarding the financial status of self, of father and others associated, the anxieties are being allowed to so upset the body as to cause it to lose the proper perspective of the conditions as well as the manners in which they may be met.

4. Then, such information as may be given here may become to the entity as rather idealistic than practical.

5. But it is well for the entity to take cognizance of those immutable laws to which this entity is allied, as well as others; and to consider the choices made, as to how there is the attempt to hold to one thing and let the activities refute the very experiences and conditions it would claim, or does claim, as its own!

6. The material surroundings, the material environs should become rather the outcome of a mental and spiritual life so planned, so acted upon that these will be in keeping with that which makes for the greater development of the soul and spiritual forces in any experience.

7. And these are the purposes for which each soul enters an experience or sojourn as a whole.

8. As the entity is aware, from its own meditation, or forethought, conditions in which anyone finds self are not perchance but the result - combined result - of the activities of the entity in given directions as related to creative or spiritual forces within the entity’s OWN realm of activity.

9. Thus an entity creates, as well as becomes a part of all that it is and has been.

10. And in meeting these, then, there must be an ideal to which one would adhere, and draw its conclusions or measurements from such as in relationship to its mental, material and spiritual affairs or associations.

11. This, first, precludes - and is self-evident - that an entity must FIRST be honest, fair with self. And, as has been given, when this is true, it will follow that the entity, the body will not be unfair to anyone.

12. The conditions that exist in the experience, then, as we find are as these:

13. There are SO MANY material problems - as has been indicated - that the entity allows self to be drawn away from the first principles; so that it is SELF that wants to do something! This rather indicates the selfish nature, that is innate in an entity.

14. While each soul, each associate, each acquaintance IS an obligation, a duty - all of these must cooperate, coordinate. As the body itself in its welfare, mentally or physically, unless it cooperates, coordinates each portion with the other, there is not the well-rounded, the well-balanced individual nor the better and best reactions from same.

15. There is the physical body, there is the mental body, there is the spiritual body. They are one. They each have their attributes. They each have their weaknesses. They each have their associations. Yet they must be all coordinated.

16. The spirit is the life. Then each phase of the experience of the entity must be of the spiritual import in its very nature, if it is to live, to be the fulfilling of its purpose - to bring peace and harmony, for which purpose it IS in existence! It must be constructive in the very nature and the very desires, without thought of self being the one glorified in or by same! Rather the GLORY is to the influence or force that PROMPTS same!

17. As is the experience of the entity: If even filial or marital or soul love seeks the exalting of self, then it is not fulfilling its purpose from the spiritual import. God is love! The influence or force that motivates the life of each soul is love! But it may be love of self, of fame, of fortune, of glory, of beauty, or of self-indulgence, self-aggrandizement, or the satisfaction to the ego!

18. These are the conditions that MUST be in EVERY phase of the experience analyzed.

19. There are abilities within the activities of the mental, the physical body of this entity; and these are to be used then in those directions in which the greater glory is given to that which is the ideal of the entity in its spiritual relationships to the creative forces from WITHIN!

20. Then, they are to be used in those manners and in those channels wherein the entity is a creative influence in the lives and the experiences of others, to create hope, to create faith, to create that which is constructive in every phase.

21. Thus, whether it brings material hardships, material problems or not, such an ideal is to be held to; and the problems will be dissipated by the very influence and force of the love and the desire that is PURPOSEFUL but SELFLESS in its nature, in its activity!

22. And when this is applied, when this is done, when the activities are in that direction, we will find the channels for the abilities - the connections, the associations - will be as it were creative in themselves. Not as show, but rather as that in which there may be the magnifying of brotherly love and hope and promise and faith in a CREATIVE force and influence!

23. Ready for questions.

24. (Q) Considering all the circumstances surrounding my father, […] difficulties with postal position, age etc., advise me just how I should counsel him for his and my mother’s best development? (A) In those lines and in those directions that have just been indicated. When there is the analyzing of the purposes, the desires, the things that have been meted out, it will be seen that these must be met in themselves.

25. (Q) Would it be wise to attempt to arrange to have him come to New York to live and if so what type of work should he seek? (A) First, determine within self as to whether New York and the environ is that in which there can be greater help in HELPING the father help himself.

Every individual is weakened by help that is not of a constructive nature. For a creative thing is a growing thing, a constructive thing.

But if there is the choice within self that New York is to be the environ in which the greater forces and influences may be accomplished, very well.

As to the type of work, that for which the body has fitted itself. For in the very activities there ARE those problems that the entity itself MUST meet.

Those activities, then, for which the father has fitted himself, are the channels through which there may be the greater service. And not merely for sustenance, nor the approach to same for that. But as a manner and way in which there may be a service RENDERED that is in keeping WITH the DESIRE of the entity to be a servant to those IN the manner in which there is service to that which is his ideal in his relationship to the fellow man.

This is not as a servant in the term of being in a position of servitude. It is rather a service with the desire to each day be a channel through which the creative or divine influence is to be appreciated - and that appreciation expressed - within the experience of self and given to others.

26. (Q) Is there anything I can do to relieve the confusion, fear and shame in my father’s mind resulting from his mistake and shortage of money, discovered by the auditors? (A) Just as has been indicated.

27. (Q) Is there any hope of a position for my father in the future? (A) This is dependent upon the manner in which the approach is made for same.

28. (Q) Will I receive compensation from The Liberty Mutual for accident injuries of last May 1st, 1937? Conference with insurance representative is set for April 29, 1938, at 10:00 A. M. (A) As we find, in keeping with the qualifications that were set forth in the contract of the policy itself, there will be returns in keeping with those facts as will be set forth in same.

29. (Q) Can I help my husband more, and fulfil his ideal and dream of what he expects of his wife, by studying and going on with plans for achievement in a profession, or by going deeper into the career of a housewife? He has so far shown little interest in a home as such, but that may come - I want him to be happy. (A) The greatest career of any wife is creating, making, building a home that is of such a nature, so attractive that it becomes that it is intended and purposed to be - the greatest career of any individual, which is permitted to the wife, is to build the home in such a way and manner as to make it a retreat, as a place where ALL of those activities are such that it fills the longing that is in the heart and soul of each and every individual who has taken a mate for such.

As to whether this can be combined with a career or not is dependent upon the application of self in the directions of its abilities; for it may be used as same. But DO NOT let other associations or affiliations make it rather as a place to hang the hat or to rest. BUILD a home!

30. (Q) Can I reach a true understanding of my husband’s temperament, needs, and of marriage, so that our future together will be harmonious and happy? (A) If you study same in the light of that which has been indicated; that is: Analyze as to what are the purposes and desires. Analyze as to what the purposes and desires were that brought you and your husband together. If they were for a gratifying only of physical, or for the desires of a physical nature, that’s all there will ever be then!

But these go deeper; and as we find, if there is the attempt, and the REAL attempt - and the analyzing of the purposes of each, they can be understood and each become as a strength, as a stay one for the other.

For that which prompted the very activity of being brought into the relationships was from the spiritual import; while having the physical, the mental as well as spiritual aspects. Build them in a creative, constructive and spiritual force.

31. (Q) Will it be possible, with my seeming lack of physical strength, for me to carry on my work in Numerology and Astrology? (A) This is possible, but build the home first - then carry it on there.

32. (Q) What is the best plan I could follow to attract business, as I am a comparative stranger in New York and must make contacts? (A) Be sincere. Sincere - and the SINCERITY of the activity will gradually BUILD that which IS constructive; and that is to be builded in the minds and the experience of all of those who may gradually become the clientele for the very attracting influences of the entity itself.

Not that warnings are not to be given to individuals who come to the entity, but these are to be given in a constructive manner. Build rather the hopeful things, the spiritual things, the creative things; magnify THEM in the experiences of those you would aid.

33. (Q) Being a comparative stranger in New York how should I go about to make contacts? (A) As just indicated. First lay out a plan; combine it with the efforts of the husband and the needs, and the activities of self for every phase of the experience; and then work the plan!

34. (Q) What can I do to rise above my shortcomings and the darker side of my nature, which seems to result from an emotional repression? (A) As has been indicated, first analyze self, self’s desires, self’s purpose. Put away from the mind, the heart, the experience, those things that make afraid. Know that the true spirit of creative influences, of God influence, of that which will succeed in every phase of the experience, is within the abilities of self WITHIN.

And when this is done, then BUILD upon same in a creative way and manner.

B1. 4/15/38 HLC’s letter from New York to EC in Va. Beach: ”…Talked with [1579] last night at Miss [1402]‘s. She really needs help and seems to have a real faith in the readings as a source of guidance. She has filled out a blank and made out some questions. I’ll write out a suggestion and send it along with them. Suggest that this be put under [437] or [1151] for sponsorship. Believe she will gradually pay it up. Is certainly in a mess as you see from questions…

“Better have Mother go over this carefully before reading and get in mind the need of the situation. You remember this lady came in to see you at Beach for short time once.

“The situation seems to revolve around family problems and her action in relation to them. She explains the situations in her questions to some extent. Briefly here is the material which she gave me in conversation. Bring out through questions as helpful suggestions on each phase of this matter as possible.

“Father has postal position in small town in Nebraska. Appointment up in May, because of present shortage of $125 in account which Mrs. [1579] has had to make up; will probably not get reappointment. Fears that father will commit suicide. Very close to father and able to influence him. Considers bringing him to New York but fears husband complications. Has been married only short time and husband has had little contact with family. If father and mother come to New York what type of work for father, etc.

“Brother finishing school this term. Having hard time and being helped by sister who is working and is dissatisfied. Considers bringing sister to New York also - question.

“Husband makes only small salary and [1579] finds it necessary to work to help. Is doing work for Miss [1402] on astrology and numbers.

“Had accident which may bring in some income later as indicated.”

“Have I paid for my part in the failure of my first marriage to […] born 1/24/01 in Nebraska? It was in attempting to reach him and convince him that we could be happy together and start over, on a different basis, that the accident occurred. I had made several attempts before but failed. He married a friend of mine and seems very happy. I am gradually realizing it all worked out for the best and there is no bitterness, for we were both to blame.

“My own peace of mind and happiness revolves around my father and mother - my brother, who is in his last year at … University - my little sister, 20, now working in …, Nebraska - and helping my folks all she can - and my husband. My sister is not happy - has nothing at all but work - no companionship - no fun. If I bring her - and my brother - here, could she find work and, more important, some joy in life?

“Can I help my husband (born 8/14/97 near Kansas City) more… [See 1579-1, Par. 29-A.] I want him to be happy

• and now - in the beginning - and want to do the wisest thing as to plans for our future. At the present so much depends upon some method of helping Mother and Dad, that it is my first thought.”

B2. 4/16/38 EC’s letter to [1579]: ”…Have been expecting to hear from you for a long time, since you were here - making the appointment for the morning of the 22nd… Sincerely trust that we may be of a real service - just hope the ‘information’ doesn’t preach at you but will be of a real help to you. Be sure and let me know if time is alright.”

B3. 4/19/38 Letter to EC from [1579]: ”…I will spend the hour … in quiet meditation, fully confident that I will receive help and guidance from your reading. If the reading does ‘preach at me’, as you mentioned in your letter, then I know it would only be because I needed it. I am a bit lost and confused - and so eager to hear from you. If you discover any means of my obtaining a settlement from the insurance co., that is, any action on my part that would further my case, I would sincerely appreciate it.

“I was in the hospital for 13 weeks and have been unable to continue my work, except for very brief periods of study and research with a very few appointments since 5/1/37. Dr. [1397] has helped me greatly, but being so limited financially I have not had the treatments necessary for the recovery I know she could help me attain.

“I do appreciate the courtesy you are extending, and I shall send you everything I can - and as often as possible…”

B4. 4/22/38 EC’s letter to [1579]: ”…Regret to be a joy killer, but just can’t help it. Was unable to get the information this morning. Work, worry, or what - anyway, one of those times that comes once in a while, when I just couldn’t get off to the unconscious - and I do not try and force myself - afraid of the consequence… Next period is afternoon of the 27th…let me know if that time will be convenient for you to keep.”

B5. 4/25/38 Letter to EC from [1579]: ”…The hour I spent in meditation on the 22nd was not wasted. I had been under great mental strain the past few days and needed to relax and pray. I am happy to know that you will be helping me Wednesday, 3:30 EST. That will be 4:30 here. I will stay quietly here at home. I understand my insurance conference is to be held Friday A.M. at 10, N.Y. time.”

“P.S. I don’t want to impose on you, but I am so in hopes that there may be a word relative to my insurance, and if so, will you send the letter to me air mail to the Commodore Hotel, N.Y.C., and I will get it at the desk there Friday A.M. before I go with my lawyer to the hearing. My atty. is coming to N.Y. that morning.”

B6. 4/26/38 Wire: “Forgive hasty postscript in letter - will appreciate advice whenever it comes. Insurance important only to help family and relieve husband of bills incurred by accident. More important that mutual understanding and happiness with him be reached. Futility of my efforts plus family worries causing physical weakness. Know you can help.”
