This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 17th day of May, 1938, in accordance with request made by the father - Mr. [1693], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mrs. […] [Sister of Mrs. [667]].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mrs. […] and Mr. [1693] and his sister.]
Time of Reading 6:15 to 6:35 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Va. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [1594].
-
Now as we find, conditions are rather serious. The present condition is apparently somewhat bettered from the spasmodic reactions and the coma.
-
But the pressures that cause these are from adhesions in the abdominal area, about the lacteals AND the upper portion of the jejunum, and the portions of the liver where there has been a little swelling.
-
These, with the pressures upon the cerebrospinal system, have caused the accumulations that have gone along the course of the nerve system towards the brain.
-
Hence the inability for the movements along the areas of the locomotions where the pressures have existed and do exist.
-
As we find, as to whether there may be recuperations will depend upon the consistency and persistency of applications of those things that may bring relief, and THEN to be sure upon the response the body makes to same.
-
For much will depend upon the spiritual attitude of those upon whom the physical experience or the life itself depends.
-
These, then, as we find, are those conditions to be met.
-
First:
-
Each day we would apply heavy Castor Oil Packs, for periods of half an hour to an hour, across the upper portion of the abdomen and across the liver area.
-
After these Packs each day we would have a massage along the spine; this to begin almost at the base of the brain and be made DOWNWARD, NOT towards the brain, see?
-
For such massaging, one day use Cocoa Butter; this to be gently, not severely but gently, massaged into the spine and the area upon either side of same. The next day use Camphorated Oil.
-
To be sure, each morning there must be the gentle bath or sponge bath over all the areas that have been covered with the packs or the oils; and this done with a weak soda water solution; warm, of course, but gently applied.
-
We will find it necessary in the diets to keep those things that are easily assimilated. Those that are indicated in the present are very well, but add to these - as we find - the pure Beef Juice; this WEAKENED, but given as a part of the diet. Let this be made, and then when the juice is to be used put at least a teaspoonful of water (THAT HAS BEEN BOILED!) in a tablespoonful of the Beef Juice. Let this be given in sips, a very little at the time, and may be given several times during the day. Take the tablespoonful of the juice (diluted with the water, as indicated) during a whole day, but in small sips at a time. This is not to take the place of other foods. It will give strength without making for the creating of the inflammation which has arisen, does arise from the lesions or adhesions in the areas indicated - and the accumulations that have traveled along the nerve forces.
-
If the massages given as indicated are able to reduce the tendencies and the accumulations as tumors upon the areas of the brain, we may make for the locomotions to be returned - and these be absorbed so that there may be the activity in speech, in the actions of the limbs, and bring a better condition for the body.
-
The rubs, as indicated, would be given in a circular motion - and away from the head! not toward the head!
-
Be sure that there is the full evacuation of the bowels or colon each day, once or twice a day.
-
Every second or third day use an enema, and use at least half a teaspoonful of baking soda in a quart of water for such an enema solution; the frequency of the enema depending upon the manner in which the eliminations are kept.
-
And let there be the care.
-
Do these, then, as indicated, each day for a period of ten days - yes, two weeks; and then we would give further instructions.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Should a laxative be used at all? (A) A laxative may be used. As we find, an equal combination of Fletcher’s Castoria and Syrup of Figs would be the better.
-
(Q) What dosage, and how often? (A) This will depend upon the activity of the eliminations, but about a quarter to half a teaspoonful of the mixture - equal portions of Syrup of Figs and the Castoria.
-
(Q) What has caused this condition? (A) As indicated, the adhesions in the areas about the lacteal and umbilicus duct - a very unwarranted or wanton way of attention in or during the period just after childbirth, and WITH the manner in which the umbilicus plexus was taken care of.
-
(Q) Has the child ever been normal? (A) For the first two weeks, near normal.
Do these; and let the parents be prayerful - as in this:
Let them oft, with the body, fill their minds, their hearts with that of grace, mercy, truth, justice, and to be channels such that whatever may be the better for this body may come to it AS its right in this experience.
- We are through for the present.

[Remarks when Reading was finished: 22 months old; noticed nothing wrong till 1 year old, when child began to have spasms; had as many as one every minute and a half for three hours straight running; spasms day and night for three weeks; took her to Duke’s Hospital in Durham, N.C., last summer for five weeks; they tapped her spine and X-rayed her all over - found her perfectly normal and healthy except nervous system wasn’t fully developed - tumor on brain. Has never walked, never walked alone. Just returned yesterday from St. Vincent’s Hospital in Norfolk where she stayed 5 to 6 weeks, had 15 baby specialists examine her; doctor in charge thought every night she wouldn’t be alive next morning. They say there’s nothing they can do; she will never be normal, probably won’t live very long. They tapped her spine 4 times while in hospital last time; the 3rd time didn’t get any fluid.
Doctor attending baby at birth took her band off when 7 days old.
Her stomach has been swollen ever since she became ill; or noticeably ill. Has been very constipated all her life.]

Background
Background
B1. 1/17/38 History of [1594]‘s case as told to Gladys Davis by the parents:
History of [1594]; born July 7, 1936 at Virginia Beach, Va., attending physician Dr. Cora Z. Corpening.
When [1594] was 6 months old she did not sit up as babies usually do around that age. Dr. C. didn’t seem to think anything was wrong except that she was just slow in developing; perhaps it would be well to let a child baby specialist examine her a little later, she might need to wear some sort of support - suggested that we see Dr. Willcox.
Then we took her to Dr. Taylor [Waller L. Taylor, M.D.] (of Va. Beach) several times. In August, when she was about 13 months old, he told us, to be perfectly frank, he didn’t think he could do [1594] any good; and suggested that we carry her to Dr. Mullen, baby specialist in Norfolk. We took her to Dr. Mullen three times and he referred us to Duke Hospital in Durham, N.C., or to John Hopkins in Baltimore. Dr. Wilson, another baby specialist in Norfolk, also examined her. Dr. Wilson said she was slightly retarded; the nervous system was not fully developed. He gave us a letter to Dr. Davidson, dean of Duke Hospital.
The middle of September, when she was 14 months old, we took her to Duke Hospital; she was there four days. They examined her; made X-rays of brain and other parts of the body; tapped her spine; said she would be alright by the time she was 3 years old - she was just retarded. At that time she had never sat alone. They couldn’t find anything wrong with her, - just as normal as any baby; blood tests and everything like that. Just mentally retarded. They recommended giving her two quarter grain thyroid tablets a week, and wrote Dr. Taylor a letter to that effect, telling him what to do; said this would make her grow and develop.
[1594] began to crawl about 6 weeks later.
The last of December - 17 months old - she had bronchial pneumonia. She had by that time been able to pull up and walk around chairs. The pneumonia lasted about a week and she seemed to recover from it completely. Dr. Taylor doctored her through the pneumonia.
Then about two weeks later she seemed to begin going backward; didn’t have as much vitality or “aliveness” about her.
One evening around 6 o’clock, the first of February, she was in the carriage being rolled around in the kitchen by […] (her older sister) while I (the mother) was getting supper. Suddenly I noticed that [1594]‘s face was expressionless, that she wasn’t seeing or noticing anything; then it was as if she had fainted. We rushed her to the St. Vincent Hospital in Norfolk. They gave her a hypodermic immediately to relax her, as she began to have convulsions. That didn’t do any good. The next morning they gave her ether; kept her under that for 24 hours; tapped her spine 3 or 4 times. She was there 5 weeks, having convulsions one right after another; day and night nurse; kept her doped all the time. Her temperature went up as high as 107 several times, and stayed there for 2 hours once. They gave her alcohol baths continually to reduce the temperature, and kept ice pack on her head. After 5 weeks the convulsions were not as close together; she stayed on another 6 weeks, making 11 weeks in all. The convulsions then became rather twitching spells. When having the convulsions she would get into every shape imaginable; her spine would bend backward until her hips were touching her head - we couldn’t bend her arms or legs. During those spells she pulled every bit of her hair out. They gave her glucose injections for 5 weeks, before they found they could give her anything else; then gave her Karo water; then chocolate milk - in a medicine dropper, one drop at a time for 3 weeks. The last day of March they began giving her chocolate milk.
When she first went there they couldn’t find any evidence of a tumor, but thought it was there. On the fourth tapping of the spine they found the evidence.
All in all, about thirteen doctors examined her; chief among them (in reputation and standing) being Drs. Redwood, Wilcox, Mullen and Wilson - (and Dr. Taylor of Va. Beach.).
After 5 weeks Dr. Mullen said it was just a matter of time; if they operated on her it would be sudden death; and there might possibly be one chance out of ten thousand of her getting over it. If she lived she would never be any better off.
Then she only weighed thirteen pounds. Dr. Mullen left every night saying it would be a miracle if she was alive the next morning.
After the 11 weeks, he said we could bring her home - she would be just as well off there, and all we could do would be to make her as comfortable as possible.
All during that time she was without recognition of any of the family, even when apparently conscious. She couldn’t turn over in bed, nor sit up, nor hold anything in her hands; just limp like a rag.
I (the father) had heard about Mr. Cayce through a Mrs. […] who lived near me, and whose sister and cousin had both been helped so greatly by Mr. Cayce. I decided to appeal to him for my child.
It was about the middle of May when we brought [1594] home, and on May 17th Mr. Cayce gave us the first Reading.
