This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 22nd day of July, 1938, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [1645], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mr. [1194], Miss [243], Mrs. [340] and Mrs. [482].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mae Verhoeven, Claude Gimbert, Belle Kaufman, a Miss Weisiger and Mrs. L. G. Wormeley.]
Time of Reading 4:10 to 4:30 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Tennessee. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [1645].
-
As we find, there are disturbing conditions that prevent the normal activity of the physical forces of the body. These as we find are rather complex, or a combination of disturbances.
-
Hence it may be indicated or appear that most every organ is disturbed in its reaction in some way or manner.
-
These as we find arise basically from a toxic condition that arises from a subluxation in the cerebrospinal system, that first affected the activity of the liver as related to both heart and the kidneys.
-
Thus an abnormal condition has been produced within the organ of the heart, as well as a dropsical condition through the pelvis and through the lumbar axis areas.
-
These then are conditions as we find them with this body, [1645] we are speaking of:
-
First, IN THE BLOOD SUPPLY, we find indications of an abnormal disturbance in the heart itself; that is, an engorgement owing to the full circulation in the internal circulation; thus filling the heart, with a lack of the circulation through the liver and the opposite pole (or the kidneys) to purify these portions of the system.
-
This then indicates a toxic condition through the bloodstream itself, and rather the inclination for an excess of blood with the lack of the abilities for the functioning of the organs to purify same in the circulatory system.
-
As we will find, this produces definite disturbances in the organs as indicated that are hindered in activity by this circulatory condition.
-
IN THE NERVOUS SYSTEM, we find, as indicated, there was in times back - through a strain - a subluxation produced in the 4th and 5th dorsal center or plexus.
-
From this we have a lesion that extends along the cerebrospinal system to the 9th dorsal plexus, also in the 4th lumbar plexus; as indicated by disturbances that have been produced by the deflection of the impulses from the nervous system.
-
True, the cerebrospinal nervous system impulses arise from the brain center, while the sympathetic impulses arise from their association with impulses along centers of the cerebrospinal system.
-
But because of influences from without, or the sensory forces, or the mental reactions that the body makes to circumstances or conditions about it, FEAR has been allowed to enter into the activities of the physical forces. And so oft has the body been told that the disturbance was this or that; and owing to lack of proper eliminations through the alimentary canal and improper influences from other portions of elimination, poisons have been left until there is fear-poison as well as functional conditions in the bodily forces themselves.
-
These all as we find may be materially aided and near to normal conditions result. It will require patience, persistence, faith; and application CONSISTENTLY.
-
Live and think in constructive ways, FIRST!
-
IN THE FUNCTIONING OF THE ORGANS THEMSELVES, as indicated, we find that all of the organs of the sensory system are involved; the hearing, the sight, the taste, the smell - ALL are disturbed at times. Unusual odors may occur for the body when they do not exist to others. An unusual fear or feeling of the presence of this or that may occur, without the apprehension or understanding of same from others. The body is disturbed by the hearing of noises, and the lack of hearing at all at other times. The vision is gradually becoming impaired, physically; as well as the taste.
-
All of these are the effects of those disturbances of the character or nature as indicated through the sympathetic or the vegetative nerve forces, and their lack of proper coordination with the cerebrospinal impulses of the body.
-
Through the bronchials, the larynx, the lungs - these we find very good considering the amount of poisons that exist in the system, and that are influencing the lymph and emunctory circulation through soft tissue of head, face, throat and especially the lungs.
-
The heart’s activity, as we have indicated, has been increased until the size of the organ itself has been and is out of the ordinary condition - or the vortex has been so filled as to cause impulses to arise that cause a filling of the organ itself.
-
It is rather the effect of poisons and the lack of the return circulation through the superficial activities of the system, or the veins rather than the arteries. The arteries and heart and liver remain too full, with too much of the blood itself in the system.
-
In the activity of the digestive system - through the impulses as have been received by the subluxation which has existed - we find that the torpidity of the liver has gradually caused the left lobe to show the effect of the slowed blood circulation; spots in same, as would be indicated by the conditions that exist.
-
Also there has been the impairment to the proper circulation and the flow of impulse to the kidneys, from which activities should eliminate conditions as of the uric poisoning from the system, purifying the blood for the rest of the circulation.
-
Hence there are the indications that - through pressures produced by the reflexes from not only the subluxation in the upper dorsal and the 9th dorsal plexus, or the solar plexus, but the lumbar plexus as well - the fluids tend to gather in too great a quantity (the lymph) in the abdominal area.
-
Hence the swelling that has been indicated in the system; in the feet and lower limbs at times, especially in the ankles and in the bursa of the heel and the central portion of the limb itself. The knees at times give disturbance, and aching. All of these are a portion of the effect from the slowed circulation and lack of the proper eliminations from the system, and the lack of coordination between the alimentary canal eliminations and the effect of the kidney and its elimination - the perspiratory system as well as the respiratory system.
-
AS WE FIND, THEN, IN MAKING THE CORRECTIONS:
-
First, as indicated, THINK RIGHT!
-
Secondly, think right to do something ABOUT it! Quit feeling, or DON’T FEEL SORRY FOR SELF! Know that the conditions which exist are a part of thy experience! Use them as stepping-stones, not as stumbling-stones!
-
Let the body, then, be filled with the desire to be good; not merely good but good FOR something - for others! Quit thinking of self! Think of doing something constructive for someone else!
-
Then, first:
-
Have an OSTEOPATH to make the corrections - gradually, not all at once but gradually - in the upper dorsal, the 9th dorsal and 4th lumbar. These pressures gradually removed, we will gradually remove the strain upon the system.
-
During the next two weeks have at least two high colonic irrigations. Not all at once, but gradually eliminate those impactions that exist in the ascending colon.
-
Have with these enemas the oil enema, or as a part of same.
-
The day before the enemas are given, use Castor Oil packs for at least two hours - OVER the liver and the caecum area, or extending from the lower portion of the abdomen and the caecum to the lower portion of the rib; from the lower portion of the hipbone to the lower portion of the rib, on the right side. Have three or four thicknesses of heavy flannel saturated in Castor Oil, and used as hot as the body can stand same. This will absorb as well as loosen the activities of all the intestinal tract, as well as the congestion in the liver itself.
-
After the first two or three high enemas or colonic irrigations, these would then be given at least once a month or oftener if there is the inclination for the lack of activity through the alimentary canal.
-
The applications of the Oil Packs will furnish sufficient heat and stimulation for the superficial circulation to gain a good perspiration; and let the perspiration be active in that sense as given of old, “for in the sweat of the brow shall man eat bread.”
-
Live rather upon fruit juices and vegetable juices. No meats of any character until all of these disturbances have been eliminated. For strength, Beef JUICES may be taken; not broth but the beef JUICES - small quantities often.
-
Do not take cathartics, but plenty of fruit juices and vegetable juices - and raw vegetables; until the condition IS eliminated.
-
Keep these activities until the swelling, the inclinations for the smothery feeling or spells from the heart and liver activity have been eliminated.
-
Be consistent, be persistent.
-
If these are done persistently, consistently, we will find bettered conditions for this body.
-
Do these things, then; and as these are applied, keep the mental attitude constructive.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Why won’t kidneys act? (A) This condition has been described in those things indicated, and following the suggestions as given we will find that such disturbances will be relieved.
-
(Q) Is the apex of heart missing or off? (A) Rather, as we have indicated, it is too full in its size, owing to the flow of the deep circulation and lack of superficial circulation; owing to those subluxations as indicated, in the impulses from cerebrospinal system to functioning of the organs.
Do these as have been outlined, and we will bring the better conditions for this body.
- We are through for the present.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 8/16/38 [1645]‘s letter to EC:
”…No doubt you think me very insincere and very negligent as to keeping my word.
“Just after receiving your Reading, my daughter came for me and took me home with her. I am here on the bed resting the heart. I have not been able to take the osteopathic treatments. As I told you, I am only living from day to day. We are merely existing - have no money for anything whatever, so that is why I have not sent the names of osteopaths as you requested.
“I have not been able to find anyone who gives the hydrotherapy treatments; they all seem to be physiotherapy. Your sister, Mrs. Hesson, [Sarah Cayce Hesson - Mrs. L. J.] said she had never heard of them but would try to help me find out about it. However, I have not been able to get to the phone to call her. Since my daughter and husband do not believe in readings of any kind, I do not discuss the subject in their presence.
“I am hoping and praying there will be a way for me soon to do something soon that I can make a little money of my own, so that I can be able to take them.
“My husband is really not in a position for me to take them
- he can hardly make our meat and bread.
“Mr. Cayce, you surely did describe exactly how I was suffering in every way. I believe in your readings, and in every word you say.
“I have another great trouble now, and that is I cannot sleep. I am almost frantic for sleep. And I do know that an osteopath would help that trouble, for I have been this way before - some 6 or 7 years ago. I am just only sorry I cannot carry out my promise to you.
“I am a little late in sending you the balance for the Reading, but I just did not have it. I had sold some things so that I could get the Reading, and have just collected the balance.
“Now just as soon as there is a way for me, I am going to take the osteopathic treatments; also hydrotherapy if there is one in … and there is any way possible for me to.
“I want to thank you very sincerely for the Reading and hope you will not feel that I do not want to do all you told me to do…”
R2. 8/18/38 EC wrote advising her to go to see either Dr. Sunora L. Whiteside [D.O.] or Dr. James R. Shackleford [D.O.], telling them EC had sent her.
R3. 1/8/39 [1645]‘s letter to EC:
”…I have wanted to write you for some time to ask you for a Check reading. Mrs. McPherson Mary Cayce McPherson - Mrs. W. A.] advised me to some time ago. But I have been feeling so badly since November. I know you will say I am not doing what you advised me to do, but will say I have done my best under my limited circumstances. I went to Dr. Shackleford, as you advised, and took quite a few treatments but I could see no way of paying him so I had to stop.
“Mr. Cayce, I am really suffering. The dropsical condition is worse now than before, and the anemia has returned. I have had two severe colds and am not able to do any of my housework. I am so uncomfortable, that I can’t sit up in any comfort. I am nothing like as well as when I talked with you at your sisters’. I must say the colonic treatments helped me very much, but since the kidneys have gone bad again the bowels have become worse. I think I must have overworked myself and got back in the same condition. Only seems to me I am worse. My financial difficulties are a great drawback to my health. You know it takes money for everything and that I do not have - they are becoming worse and more difficult all the time.
“May I ask that you kindly give me this Reading at your earliest opportunity. I am so uncomfortable and really suffering. I do thank you so much for all you have done for me… Questions: Why am I so uncomfortable and tight through chest region? and all through body? and hurt so badly through the ribs and feet? What must I do for anemia and cough? Is cough caused from heart or is it a bronchial irritation? What can I do for the kidneys? Why is the abdomen so tight? I have a cold, tight feeling in the right foot and limb - is that neuritis or dropsy? Why does the back of my neck hurt me so much? and why can’t I sleep? What will relieve the awful tight feeling in body especially under the breast, in the heart region?
“Please tell me all you can about my condition.
“I thank you so much.”
R4. 1/12/39 EC’s letter to [1645]:
”…Have yours of the 8th and assure you would like to help if possible, but do not see how the Reading can or will help if you cannot and do not follow the suggestion. And are you not taking time that someone might use profitably? Will be glad to try if you wish it, but aren’t you making bad matters worse? Others do not agree with you even trying - will they not then help you with their idea of helpfulness with some good physician?
“Am setting the morning of the 18th for the time to try, but you will have to let me know whether you wish it at that time or not and just where you will be between 10:30 and 11:30 E.S.T. on that morning.
“Sorry you are feeling so bad. You are sorely tried am sure, but you will have to - as Namann [Naaman] - decide what you will do. Hoping to be of service…”
R5. 1/15/39 [1645]‘s letter to EC:
”…Yours of the 12th just received.
“If you think it best we will just postpone the Check reading until I can see my way a little better in a financial way. I hope you did not misunderstand me. I do believe in your readings and did cooperate with you just as far as I could. But I did not think it fair to Dr. Shackleford, to be taking up his time and not being able to give him anything.
“He was so very nice about it. But after all, I was very much embarrassed and worried to keep going, going and never being able to pay him but $1.00 all the time I went to him. I did not want him to have to tell me to stop. I thought perhaps the Reading would help my mind at least and perhaps it might give some other treatment, perhaps less expensive or something else that I might be able to do.
“I guess you are right. I might be taking the time that someone else might use more profitably, as you said. I had not thought of it in that way. True, my family does not agree with me, but they have not mentioned it to me, nor anything about a physician. As you know, everyone does not see and believe alike, so I am not even trying to discuss it with them. I feel as though I am in a little corner all to myself. Trusting fully and faithfully in the Great I Am. Where my sufferings are intense at times I am comforted in His love and protection and feel that He will not put anymore on me than I can stand.
“I know what I want to do but without money it can’t be done. I would like so much to continue my treatments, but at present there is not any way available for me to do so. I surely do thank you so much for what you have done for me and hope there may be a day in the near future that I can resume my treatments, and that I may be able to get another full Physical reading from you. Wishing you lots of luck and prosperity…”
