-
GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions she has submitted, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, Miss [1655]; this we have had before.
-
There are changes in the physical forces of the body since last we had same. Some are for much improvement, others are not so well.
-
As we find, in the present:
-
While the manipulations that have been given have been very good, there has not been taken into consideration the conditions which have existed and that do exist in the liver and gall duct area; as related to the activities of the circulatory forces from the heart as well as related to the digestive system; and not sufficient precaution regarding the eliminations.
-
When there has been the last, or another of the osteopathic adjustments made, leave them off for the time being - and do these:
-
Begin immediately with the use of the Castor Oil Packs every day, when ready to retire, over the area where the pain is. But first paint the area with a combination of three parts Laudanum and one part Aconite, - then apply the Castor Oil Packs. Let these remain at least an hour, and have at least three thicknesses of flannel - this dipped and wrung out of the oil, - not just the oil poured on same, but have it well saturated and wrung out - as hot as the hands can stand. Then apply a cover of heavy toweling, and then the hot water bottle - or at least two of them. For the Packs should cover the area from the portion of the rib to the lower portion of the caecum - and through the lower portion of the abdomen.
-
After the Packs have been used every day for an hour, for five days, - then take internally, at one dose, three tablespoonsful of Olive Oil.
-
Then rest from these for two days.
-
Begin then all over again; using the Packs each day for the five days.
-
And after THAT, rather than the Olive Oil, take at least a tablespoonful of CASTOR OIL. It would be well for this to be prepared in Root Beer or the like; and follow same - the next day, you see - with at least two bottles of Castoria taken in broken doses - which would mean about a teaspoonful every hour during the waking state, until the two bottles have been taken.
-
This, of course, will tend to weaken the body, that is already racked with pain at times. But during such periods the principal diet would be citrus fruit juices with beef juice, but the beef juice NOT taken other than as medicine. Prepare at least a pound of the meat at a time, or the juice from a pound of the meat. Take at least two tablespoonsful during the day, but it is to be SIPPED, and taken often rather than in spoonsful. Take at least five minutes to take or eat a teaspoonful at the time. This will give strength, it will give assimilation.
-
Then, after these, we may begin with more activity out of doors, when the weather is sufficiently in order for such activities. And exercises - these would be very well.
-
After then two weeks, take another series of the osteopathic manipulations; with special reference given to RELAXING the eliminations as related to stomach, liver; and STIMULATE the activity of the kidneys, WITH the manipulative forces!
-
Do these if we would bring the better forces for this body, Miss [1655].
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Should I exercise or walk any at all, since it seems to aggravate the side pain? (A) Not in the present; especially during those periods when the applications are being made.
Each time before the application of the Oil Pack is made, paint the area WHERE the pain is with the Laudanum and Aconite - THEN apply the Oil Pack over the WHOLE of the area, as indicated.
-
(Q) What is cause of headache, especially the past 10 days? (A) Toxic forces in the system from congestion through the activity of the liver, the duodenum and around the gall duct.
-
(Q) Can the condition in my side be ENTIRELY cleared up without surgery? (A) As we find, it may be entirely cleared if there is consistent application. Should there arise a great deal of temperature, or become a burning pain, it would be better for operative forces. But if these applications are administered in the manner indicated, we find that we may bring conditions to near normalcy.
-
(Q) Is part of my seeming illness mental? (A) The attitude, of course, has much to do; but it is rather the physical condition creating the mental. But make for more hopeful, more helpful, more constructive thinking - and this would improve the general condition much.
-
(Q) What is condition of the spinal and pelvic lesions? (A) These are much improved.
Do these things as indicated in the present.
Then when the second course of the manipulative forces has been begun, we would give further instructions.
- We are through with this Reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 10/22/38 [1655]‘s letter to EC: “Your very kind - as usual - letter, and the rdg., have just arrived. Thank you very much for both. As usual I have questions to ask. I don’t see how you can have time for anything but writing letters, if all your patients are as troublesome as I am. Your patience is certainly infinite - for which I am very grateful.
“I may as well admit that I am somewhat intimidated by the treatment prescribed, as it sounds somewhat strenuous. But I shall carry out your instructions to the best of my ability.
“These are the questions:
“How many osteopathic treatments would you advise me to take after I have finished with the two series of castor oil packs?
“Am I to write you for further instructions when I begin the second course of osteopathic manipulation or will that entail another reading?
“Shall I go on taking the tonic you prescribed in the first rdg. after I begin the castor oil packs? (There isn’t very much of it left.)
“What size bottles of Castoria do you mean when you say I should take two bottles of it? Or does it come in only one size?
“You don’t mention the ovarian inflammation. Does that mean it has cleared up or is nonexistent or what?
“What is the meaning of ‘not sufficient precaution regarding the eliminations?’ I am always careful to insure that I have a bowel movement each day, frequently using mineral oil. What more should I do?
“Will it be allright to continue this tr. - particularly the taking of oils internally - during my menstrual period? That will be October 29 or soon after.
“I think that is all the questioning for now. I’m sorry I’ve given you so much to answer but I think it’s important that I understand the treatment.
“I hope you know and believe that I am far more deeply grateful to you than I am able to say.
“With every possible good wish for you - and my prayers.”
R2. 10/24/38 [1655]‘s letter to EC: “I am very sorry indeed to bother you with this but I have just come in from gathering supplies, hoping to begin my treatments this evening. To my great disappointment I was unable to get the laudanum and aconite mixture, since my osteopath does not have a drug permit and the mixture cannot be sold without a prescription.
“I don’t know what to do and I thought perhaps you might have a prescription filled and sent to me collect. I hate having to trouble you - and I hate the delay in starting the treatments. Would it be all right to begin using the oil packs without painting the area?”
R3. 10/26/38 EC’s letter to [1655]: “Thank you for yours of the 22nd - yes am kept busy but like it - I feel that every one that comes to me - are my responsibility - in that it is an opportunity for me to at least try and help - and remembering ‘in as much as you have done it to these my brethren, Ye have done it unto me’ means there is a real joy in trying to be of a service.
“Now about questions - you were to take the one more Osteopath treatment - then after the series of Packs - would suggest another round or the same period as first given - of course if during the series of packs you should feel the need for a treatment have it by all means - sure we will wish to check up on the condition - and then it may tell you just how many treatments - Osteopath - to take.
“Yes - continue with the tonic until all is taken - then will ask about that next time, Castoria - it is the small size - Oh yes many people laugh at the reading giving baby medicine
- but it does the work if taken as suggested - it is the 900 drop bottle or you can get the large size if you like - be sure to use Fletchers.
“Be sure Miss [1655] when you use the pack they come down over the abdomen in such a way that the Ovarian trouble will be covered - this will am sure assist in alleviating the congestion - Oh know it is a messy treatment - but let’s hope very effective.
“Eliminations - merely because there is evacuation each day does not necessarily mean the eliminations are sufficient - that is best determined by - taste in mouth - color feeling about eyes - color of stool - how well the kidneys have acted, and like. No it is well to take the Oil is that effective - but well to take Colonic irrigations occasionally also. Say once a month - for where there is irritation and pain there is greater eliminations necessary - Hope have answered everything - but please don’t think it a worry but write me fully at any time - and know we wish to see you get real well and strong for that is the way HE meant for you to be am sure.
“Thanking you and with Righteous love and regards…”
R4. 10/27/38 EC’s letter to [1655]: “Just a note about yours of the 24th - mailed the solution yesterday - hope you have it by the time this reaches you any way and that it arrives all safe. If you will use a small camel hair brush to apply this will have enough to last you some time. Just hope you will find this as effective as so many others find the suggestions have been for them.
“Have been a bit under the weather myself. Don’t feel so hot this morning. Hope you will soon be feeling fine - and know it is never any trouble to try and help. Call me at any time and be sure and let me hear from you.”
R5. 11/17/38 [1655]‘s letter to EC: “I do hope I haven’t seemed ungrateful to leave your last letter so long but I’ve several good (I think) reasons for the delay.
“But first I want to say that I hope very much that you are entirely well again. Needless to say, you and your work are in my prayers.
“Thank you very much indeed for the solution of aconite and laudanum.
“I have finished with the course of oil packs and the catharsis and am feeling quite well. The catharsis naturally made me quite ill and weak. I took the Castoria the past Saturday and Sunday. But I am almost recovered from that. The only pain which troubles me much is my side, but I believe a good deal of that - at present, anyway, - is from my hip and from the sacro-iliac joint. I had an osteopathic treatment today, as you suggested I do on conclusion of the other treatment. Do you wish to give me any further instructions, as you said you might? I shall, as you advise, continue the osteopathy.
“Again, thank you. May I wish you and Mrs. Cayce a very happy Thanksgiving, though I am a bit early.”
R6. 12/12/38 [1655]‘s letter to EC: “This will be a hurried note, but then everything seems to be hurried these days and I am ashamed to let more time go by without acknowledging you letter.
“I am feeling better all the time, thank you. I am particularly grateful since my stepmother has been ill with pneumonia for over a month and I have had the care of a house and three children, besides my stepmother’s Christmas preparations as well as mine to take care of. So the days are very full. I hope you will understand that is why I have not replied to your letter.
“I hope that you are entirely recovered from your attack of flu.
“I am very sorry to say that I was unable to hear your son’s broadcast. We couldn’t get WOR. I should have liked so much to hear it and am sure it was splendid.
“I am very sorry, too, to say that I am unable to contribute to the fund for a building in which to preserve the Association records, much as I would like to. If and when I have any money, I have intended for some time to send you a check.
“For the moment my every good wish and my prayers for your work and yourself must suffice.”
R7. 2/9/39 [1655]‘s letter: “I am feeling much better than I have in a long time. The only thing I can complain of at all is headache and I believe that comes from sinus irritation due to the cold and that it will soon pass.
“I am feeling so well that I intend to go to work in a week or ten days.”
