1. HLC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: (In going back over years from the present - ” - ‘36 - changes in thought and activities - ‘29 - withdrawal - ‘27 - ‘19 - yes, a change - ‘07 - new obligations - ‘01 - a change - ‘79 - an illness - ‘78 - ” etc., on back to birth date.)

3. Yes - we are given the records of that entity now known as or called [1662].

4. The seal of life of the entity is rather unusual, for it bespeaks of green - and those emblems that may mean much or little to the entity. In its form it is unusual, bespeaking of those things that might be gathered from heraldry - or activities.

5. For, the entity finds it necessary to keep active in mind and in the things thought and done, else it finds itself disturbed.

6. In giving the interpretations of the records as we find them here, much is indicated in a varied form or manner that may be given. But these we choose from the records here, with the desire and hope that these experiences may become a helpful influence for the entity; enabling it to fulfil those purposes and desires which prompted the entrance into the material plane at this period.

7. For, each soul enters with a mission.

8. Then know that, as He has entrusted to mankind that of salvation through the hope and trust in Him, it behooves each individual - as the body so oft finds - to be up and doing that which the hands find to do.

9. For, indeed, as it has been expressed, idle hands may oft become evil influences to others.

10. In interpreting the urges latent and manifested, these - from the akashic records here - are indicated from two direct manners; those from the astrological sojourns and those from the earthly sojourns.

11. The experiences of the entity in the environ of the astrological aspects (so-called) find expression in the longings and in the visions of the entity; for indeed the guardian angel is ever before the throne of grace for each and every soul, - not by name, lest it be limited, but by purpose of the individual self AS it has applied and does apply that concept, that ideal which is chosen through each activity of the entity.

12. For THIS entity the expression in the dreams, or from the astrological urges, is oft close in accord with the entity’s purposes; for the entity takes counsel with its better self. This may not be spoken of too highly. For it should be not only the duty but the privilege of every soul to do this.

13. In thy own body as the temple He has promised to meet thee. Keep that holy. As ye keep that holy, so ye keep in attune with that which is the highest purpose in a material manifestation.

14. We find in Venus the greater urge; though others may term the entity oft hard-headed, hard to get along with - because of convictions within self. These may be both good and bad, dependent upon the manner the urge is used. For, while it gives the appreciation of the beautiful in all its phases and manifestations, indeed any soul, any individual may count self fortunate to have the love, the friendship of THIS entity; BECAUSE of that appreciation of love, of friendship, that has been and may be manifested by the entity in this experience.

15. This also, in material manifestation, makes for that influence or characteristic in which others would call the entity a good business person or body; capable of vision, of seeing, of understanding the outcome of that thought or activity in others, whether pertaining to purely material things or that as would have to do with political, economic, or even marital relations. The entity withholds judgments at times. It would be well to give expression to same. Not in the manner as to become dictatorial, as is indicated at times in some yet that ability of analysis is the greater virtue of the entity in this experience.

16. Hold fast to same. Temper it with mercy, in justice. Through those activities aid those who falter and stumble; and greater indeed may be the abilities to apply the healing influences that arise from the very appreciation - that brings such high vibrations at times to the experience of the body, in applying healing forces to others.

17. In Uranus we find the extremes; while also the great interest as may be latent or manifested in occult and in spiritual things. These also bring the sudden changes in the thoughts and judgments, at times.

18. These in the present experience need to be tempered with mercy, which as we have indicated exists through the Venus force in the experience.

19. Also from those activities in Neptune we find that those things pertaining to water - or the elements - are an influence, or a part of the latent or manifested experience of the entity.

20. Then as for material gains, - investments in things pertaining to same may be considered by the entity as those that should have due consideration given to them; or as pertaining to air, as well as earth. Earth, air, water, - NOT fire.

21. As to the sojourns of the entity in the earth, these we find many. While all may not be indicated here at once, these are chosen as those that are found to be the greater influence in the PRESENT cycle of the entity’s experience in the earth; in the same manner as judgments arise from a study of an individual subject. When in Rome one does as the Romans! When in the activities that consist of judgments arising from spiritual imports, one has the opportunity to express in those directions.

22. Each appearance in the earth, then, leaves its activities in the urges that find expression in the emotions; sensing by sight, by feeling, by the innate knowledge of sleep or vision by the five senses of the body as they give expression.

23. Yet, as we have indicated, those as relate to love are the urges that find expression in abilities latent and manifested in the experience of this entity.

24. Before this the entity was in the land of the present nativity, during those periods of the early settlings in and about what is now Philadelphia; in the activities with Penn and those relationships there.

25. The entity was one entrusted with the care of moneys that were contributed by the brotherhood, of their own free will. These were administered in the activities that arose, as in the first church in Jerusalem.

26. Hence we find the present abilities of the entity in finance, or in things pertaining to cooperative activities as related to things or conditions; lands, houses and such. These are as a latent and manifested influence for the entity.

27. Trust organizations, group activities in which there is the concerted and coordinant activity of the many, all find physical expression innately and manifestedly in the experience of the entity.

28. In that experience, as Stephanus Pennington, the entity proved himself as one worthy of being trusted with much of others’ love and confidence. Hence the entity gained. And with that companion that is the companion today, the entity contributed to the welfare of the young and those that were in need in physical and mental ways or manners.

29. Hence that ideal as was first established there, in that land of brotherly love, and in the care, has grown to be a portion of man’s better self throughout the land; so that in most organizations there is ever that clause as to the care and attention to be given to those of the young.

30. These have brought cares to the entity, to be sure; but contentment in knowing that self and self’s abilities had been used in such a manner as to bring hope to those discouraged, confidence to those who had been disappointed in the material things.

31. Before that the entity was in the Roman land, when there were those expressions of activity in which many other lands were being overrun (according to some) and were becoming as contributing influences to that empire (according to others).

32. The entity was among those individuals sent to judge as to the abilities of the peoples to become contributors to the welfare of the empire.

33. Most historians have ignored that portion of the early Roman empire; that there were not those levies of tax without first considering and judging as to the capabilities and abilities of those who came under that rule.

34. This ideal, with others, was presented by the entity in those early expressions; and it was not changed until the desire for self-indulgence and self-gratification on the part of others became such as to undermine that great rule which was set in motion by the entity then, - in the name Argulla.

35. Through the main portion the entity was the judge through Macedonia, through portions of Egypt and Alexandria, and in parts of Spain. Those were the greater activities.

36. Thus those latent abilities in the present entity, as we have indicated, to judge individuals’ abilities to cope with their own problems, as well as to vision what would be the material as well as the mental and spiritual outcome of such activities by groups.

37. Before that the entity was in the promised land, when there were those edicts given by the Persian kings for the return of those children of promise; that they might themselves establish their OWN worship according to their own ideals.

38. The entity was an armor bearer to the king; and eventually was sent as one to assist in seeing that those edicts were carried out, and that protection was given to those who labored in a cause.

39. Thus the entity came into the promised land with Nehemiah, with Ezra, Zerubbabel, and those who labored in those periods of activity. From there the entity reported back and forth. There the entity kept the activities in such measures that from one king to another there were the various edicts given that aided those peoples to again establish a place of worship.

40. The entity gained and the entity lost through those periods of activity. Hate arose because of the attempts within some of those to turn the activities into self’s own interest; until those periods when there was the establishing of that necessary for the rebuilding of the wall, in which there were the edicts by the entity that the weapons of defense be kept at hand, as well as the implements with which to repair the wall.

41. In the present we find that walls, divisions, lines, and all such, in every phase, have been and are a part of the entity’s physical experience; and they may be used as helpful forces or as questions that become stumblingstones.

42. Choose rather in the manner as ye did in those activities of the healing nature, in the sojourn just previous; knowing that there must be coordination of purpose in body, in mind, in soul - and the ideal one.

43. Before that the entity was in the Persian and Arabian land, being a younger brother of the leader Uhjltd. In the first there arose differences, owing to the union of the tribes of different faith, by the educating of Uhjltd to be the leader to unite the factions in the land.

44. Yet when there were those establishings of the ‘city in the hills and the plains’ that became the center for the east-west caravans, and the healings that became a part of that activity to all, the entity gained under the suggestions and the guidance of the leader Uhjltd in the abilities for healing by the laying on of hands, as well as for administering what would be termed today mechanotherapy, as well as nature’s remedies as applied to bodily ills.

45. The entity was not what would be called a physician, yet one who judged as to the needs of those who came under the eye or direction of the entity through that experience; not only from the physical but from the mental and spiritual attributes.

46. The actualities, or history that brought about the change in the entity in that experience might be of interest; yet the change wrought that brought the abilities in the present becomes the more worthy of note here.

47. For, that which is of the Creative Forces lives on - and becomes expressive in the emotions of the mental and physical self, wherever there is the manifestation of the ideals that prompt same. And it is in such ideals that the face of that done to thy fellow man stands as the memorial, or as the expression before the throne of grace, - in the same manner as He who is the way, the truth and the light expressed, through meeting in the flesh those things that became stumblingstones in dealing with his fellow man. Thus He became the Way.

48. So, in turning to the thought of manifesting the ideals within self, the entity finds strength and power materially manifested, that comes from attunement to spiritual hope, spiritual desire. And this is the greater experience of the entity through the material sojourns.

49. The name then was Uhjenda.

50. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land, when there were those periods of turmoil and strife, when there had been the establishing of the Young King as one to match abilities with the Prince of the Egyptian people.

51. This entity was that other one of the councillors to the Young King, who - during the periods when the Priest was to be banished because of the activities - sought to influence the Young King to withstand the judgments of the other councillors; indicating the sources of much of that which had been brought about. Yet the advice was not accepted.

52. Later, when there became the necessity for the recall of the Priest, the entity then counseled again with the Young King, as to make the Priest in that position to meet ALL of those emergencies that were arising from rebellions within as well as activities arising as emergencies from the Atlanteans entering the land.

53. With those experiences and activities when the Priest was regenerated, the entity brought the better counsels for that activity in which healings were brought to the various groups; by the indication of how that each group, each faction had its place to fill and its duty to perform in the united efforts of that people through the experience, to become the directing forces for many of those groups of other lands that attempted to collaborate through that period.

54. In the present from that sojourn the entity finds the needs for its collaboration in varied groups where counsels are held, and where there are the needs that there be kept ever that purpose as prompted the entity then, - as fairness and justice and mercy and patience with those having the varied abilities to “carry on” in whatever might be the purpose of the individual group.

55. The name then was Est-Ero-Ar-Ar.

56. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, - WHO may tell those the direction to take who have set their point, their purpose? Rather may they not follow where the directions go?

57. Study, then, to know first thy own ideal - its author, as well as its ultimate end - in man. For, to be sure it must be creative, to live on and on. For good alone lives on. Evil perisheth with the day. Good is of God, and thus is eternal.

58. Use thy abilities - in every way - to heal those conditions, those disturbances in those relations with groups or individuals; whether in body or in purse, in mind or in spirit. For thy way is set. Keep thou the faith, - for this alone brings the joyous cry, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant - enter into the joys of thy Lord.”

Dear Hugh Lynn:

I deeply appreciate the mark of friendship which you and your father show me, in suggesting that my name be presented, with others, for comment in a Reading upon the Association’s Board of Trustees’ membership.

Having in mind only the interests of the Association, I have tried to find a “leading” in the matter; and over and over again certain disabilities present themselves as indicating that it would be difficult, if not impossible, for me to properly discharge even the most ordinary duties of a Trustee. [1661] and I do not get about much; I tire easily, and her difficulty in hearing practically rules out our attending occasions where addresses are the main feature, such as your Congress of this week-end. May it not be best, under these circumstances (and there are several other considerations, also, that seem to point the same way) to ask you to allow us to remain, as we are, just very much interested members of the Association, sympathetic in all that you are doing; and ready to help in your plans as co-operation may be needed?

I am grateful, too, for including me upon the Pray Group List. My own period for prayer and healing exercises is principally before bed-time; but I have asked that my help, such as it may be, may be made effective in the Group effort at the three hours the Glad Helpers have listed.

It was a great pleasure to catch a glimpse of you here, as you passed through a couple of weeks ago; and we hope you will often find it convenient to drop in. We shall think of you, this week-end, hoping for an inspiring series of meetings at the Congress; and shall look forward to receiving a Report of Proceedings.

Your letter of 23rd duly arrived this morning, and - first of all - Mrs. [1661] and I wish to express our congratulations and best wishes to you and your new bride. Notice of the wedding reached us some days ago, and we were most happy to learn of the great event, and appreciative of your kindness in letting us know of it. We look forward to the pleasure of meeting and knowing Mrs. Hugh Lynn, on our next visit to Virginia Beach.

The business substance of your letter [in re expanding of A.R.E. publications] - and of previous communications between us - has its difficulties for me. Family and church obligations, and psychical interests not altogether dissimilar from those of your father and yourself, have tended to expand during the past several years, until my resources of time, strength and money are pretty well engaged. This is quite in accordance with the advices in my Life Reading; but does render it impossible to take part in further undertakings, however appealing they may be to me, without possible detriment to present engagements.

I do hope to be able to make a little contribution to the work of your Association, from time to time; and enclose herewith the sum I spoke, last Spring, of sending you this Fall. However, I am unable to definitely promise any regularity in my assistance, for the reasons given; and feel that I should say so to you quite frankly, so that you may not count upon support that cannot, perhaps, be forthcoming. My sympathy and interest will always be with you and your father, without stint; and I trust that kindly thoughts are not altogether without their practical value, in the work of the Association.

R4. 8/19/42 [1662]‘s letter to HLC ordering a copy of the special edition of the book, THERE IS A RIVER, expressing the hope that stress would be placed on the relation between EC’s work and “the lesson set forth by Spiritualistic communication”:

As Spiritualists, conversing constantly in our own home with those who have passed beyond death; and receiving the same messages of instruction and inspiration as are so notable in your father’s communications, we cannot help feeling that one element of simple human comfort which we are privileged to enjoy has not yet been stressed by your father as it might be; and that when the time comes when it may seem proper to sanction it as part of his message, a broader and more beautiful fruition of his great and splendid work is certain to result. I mention this to you, hoping that you may understand a little better to what viewpoints our own personal experience has led us.

Dear Friends:

I feel that I should ask you to take my name off your membership roll, and not go to the expense of mailing your literature to me, since I have come to the conclusion that - as a Spiritualist - I cannot accept the interpretation which the Association places upon the work of Mr. Cayce. My personal esteem for him and his family does not, I feel, justify my remaining a member of your Association while quite at variance with its viewpoint with respect both to the source [Reviews and publicity in re book, THERE IS A RIVER?] of his communications and the measure of their credibility.

With sincere regret that I feel that I should write to you to this effect, I am

EDGAR CAYCE FOUNDATION Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Friend:

Whence comes man’s knowledge of himself, of his God? With all the knowledge we have of our material and scientific civilization, we still know little about ourselves. Where did we come from? Where are we going? Have there been any answers found in our day and age? There have been many answers given us through one dedicated soul - a man named Edgar Cayce, who was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, in 1877. Although many books and articles have been written about this exceptional person, the full extent of the information about God and mankind that Edgar Cayce gave while in an unconscious state must, yet, be told to the world.

It has been fifteen years since Edgar Cayce crossed over threshold known as “death”. However, there were people in his lifetime who had the foresight to make a record of his “readings,” so that there are contained in the vaults of the present Edgar Cayce Foundation nearly fifty thousand pages of priceless information on medicine, history, religion, philosophy, archaeology, geology, prophecy and so on, the value and truth of which have been demonstrated beyond question over and over.

Through recent gifts by hundreds of people closely interested in the Edgar Cayce “readings,” there has been raised money to microfilm and to make microfilm prints of the single, often fading, copies of this man’s words as taken down. The ever present threat of the loss of this knowledge through fire or natural disaster has been greatly lessened. Yet, the far vaster task of indexing and of preparing for world wide distribution for this great library remains to be done, which brings us to the reason for this letter.

We are asking you to join with the still relatively small number of people close to the work of Edgar Cayce in an expanded program for nationwide and worldwide understanding, as the opportunity has been presented to each of us by the lifetime of service of one enlightened individual. This program will take funds far beyond our present resources. It will take human toil, too. We invite your visits to the Edgar Cayce Foundation, that you may learn more about and see its work in progress. We invite your financial support wherever you are.

Funds are needed right now to continue the tasks started in 1960. The indexing, duplicating and extracting of new information should continue. In this process, all personal identification of the person or persons who had each reading must be removed for privacy’s sake and impersonal numbers substituted. Many of the original carbon copy sheets were too faded to microfilm properly and must be retyped. The present work laid out will need 12,000.00 to meet the limited budget of 24,000.00 set for 1960.

Our longer range program involves research and classification by professionally trained specialists such as graduate physicians and psychologists. It has been estimated that categories such as cancer or arthritis will cost some 3,000.00 - 5,000.00, each, to assemble.

There is a compilation of letters, clippings and memos all closely related to the many “readings” and giving valuable background information about the conditions prior to and subsequent to each case, which should be added to the present microfilm and microfilm print library. It will take 4,000.00-5,000.00 for this to be accomplished.

Eventually, it is hoped, there will be complete, bound and indexed volumes of this invaluable knowledge available to all through libraries and research centers in schools, universities, seminaries and elsewhere, around the globe.

R8. 3/60 A.R.E. Bulletin Article entitled E. C. Foundation Fund Nears Halfway Mark:

Subscriptions to the Edgar Cayce Foundation’s fund for the stepped-up research program of 1960 total $10,151.60 as of March 1. This is 46 percent of the estimated budget for the year and represents the contributions of 623 A.R.E. members.

First phase of the 1960 program - microfilming and photo-printing of the entire file of readings, plus the making of duplicate microfilms for preservation - has been completed. The work of overall indexing and classification is now in progress. This reorganization of the files is being conducted in addition to the regular research services performed by the Foundation.

R9. 3/8/60 Mr. [1662] wrote: “Dear Mr. Adriance: I am sorry to tell you that the ‘readings’ which my wife and I received at Virginia Beach did not impress us at all favorably. We are not, therefore, inclined to support an effort to make such ‘readings’ better known.”
