This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 1st day of January, 1939, in accordance with request made by the father - Mr. […], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Still-Hildreth Time of Reading Sanatorium, 12:45 to 12:50 Noon - Eastern Standard Time. Macon, Missouri.

1. GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions that may be asked, as I ask them:

2. EC: (While mumbling over the address, trying to locate the body - “Out for the walk and coming in now.”)

3. As we find, there is real improvement here, - from that as we have had before.

4. Yet we find that the drainages from the head, from the soft tissue of the ear and face would be much more effective if there would be the use, consistently, of the Castor Oil Packs as indicated, - for the breaking up of the adhesions in the areas indicated.

5. And there needs to be brought about the better eliminations.

6. These combined with the corrections, and with the care and precautions as have been and are being observed, would be the more beneficial for this body.

7. These have been of long standing. Then it must necessarily mean that these must have the opportunity for not only the breaking up of the causes of the disturbances but the stimulating of the system in such measures throughout as to offer for the body-building forces the corrective measures such that the body may adjust itself to the new conditions, - if we would bring the best for the body.

8. DO NOT remove the body from this environ, but do INSIST that these be carried out fully as has been indicated.

9. (Q) How often should the Oil Packs be given? (A) As indicated, sufficiently often to gradually break up those adhesions through the areas about the gall duct and the lacteals. Whether this requires every day for a year, or once a day or a week - DO IT!

10. (Q) Does the climate affect her hearing, as she thinks? (A) Only that there is greater pressure owing to the relief OF pressures along the cerebrospinal system. Hence as indicated, the need for relieving those poisons through the colon and alimentary canal.

11. (Q) By what means should the eliminations be set up? (A) Whether the hydrotherapy or colonics or the stronger manipulations. For the exercising of these, DO this! Colonics as we find would be the more preferable.

12. (Q) May anything further be done for her head trouble, and apparent deafness? (A) AS HAS BEEN INDICATED, DO! When we remove the causes that produce the pressures upon the sensory system, from the areas indicated, we will find these will clear considerable.

DO that, if we would bring the better forces for this body of [1683].

Dear Mr. Case [Cayce]:

Thanks very much for sending me a copy of the reading for Miss [1683].

We have been treating specifically to aid Miss [1683]‘s elimination by soft and deep tissue manipulative therapy; in conjunction with this we have been using the high colonic irrigations.

Miss [1683] is on a well balanced diet and takes not only calisthenics during the day but is out of doors, walks several miles every day. All of these, I believe, have helped a great deal with her elimination. Miss [1683] has not been having any attacks as she did at first, neither have they been as severe or lasting as long as they did; likewise we have been able to cut down on the sedatives that she was taking when she first came to us.

Sorry I am not positive about the activities of Miss [1683] between twelve and one on January 1; however, I am almost sure that she ate her dinner between twelve and twelve-thirty, and was out on the grounds walking, coming back in the building for a short period of time and then going back out again and staying sometime. As I recall, it was a very beautiful day and most of the patients were out of doors most of the day.

I thank you again very much for sending me a copy of the reading and we are cooperating with you in your suggestions.

Dear Mr. […]

Reporting this week regarding Miss [1683], I will say that she has been getting along very nicely with this one exception - a few days ago she had a slight attack and was partially unconscious for a few minutes. This was the first seizure she had had for the past several weeks.

Miss [1683] was very happy to receive the coat and dresses from her sister, and is enjoying wearing them.

She has been cooperating very nicely with us, maintains a good appetite, spends considerable of her time out-of-doors, at times seems to be in exceptionally good spirits, although on other occasions she complains of various things, and the night nurse reports that she has been sleeping very well at night.

R3. 2/21/39 Mr. […]‘s letter to Dr. Still:

My dear Doctor:

I am just in receipt of your report of the 17th in-stand regarding my daughter [1683].

I am enclosing a letter dated December 25th last, written in her own handwriting, in which she complains about the over-heated buildings. It is possible that she was attempting to turn off the heat the night she had the attack (about February 15th) and fell on the unprotected radiator and burned her neck and fingers. I realize this was an accident and that she will no doubt soon recover from the burns. Also note that the radiator will now be covered, in the hope of preventing a reoccurrence.

I am writing Mr. Cayce today to make sure that you received his two full reports regarding my daughter, as it was the purport when putting her in your charge, that these readings would be very carefully followed out as directed by him. I assumed then that there was no objection to this. Also, that special mention was made of her hemorrhoids, which Dr. Hildreth said would be given close attention. As she has complained about this, I am calling it to your attention, because I know they can be relieved - if not altogether cured. This would tend to make her much happier and contented.

At your suggestion, I am having the New York Times sent to her in your care.

I feel sure you wish to cooperate, and I thank you for your reports and good attention.

Reporting at this time regarding your patient Miss [1683], will say she has been getting along very nicely, though during the past week she has had two epileptic attacks, the first in several weeks.

We have been giving Miss [1683] the hot olive oil packs, high colonic irrigations and specific osteopathic treatments.

In many ways I believe she is better, although there is still from time to time mental confusion, which of course is to be expected, having had epilepsy as many years as she has.

Reporting at this time regarding your patient, Miss [1683], will say she has been getting along very nicely with one exception, that she occasionally still has slight attacks. As a rule these seizures are not so severe, neither do they last long as they did.

Miss [1683] cooperates with us nicely. She stays out of doors most of the time during the day, maintains a very good appetite and as a rule is in a very good frame of mind and seemingly appreciates very much the fact we are trying to help her. She tells me, as well as the night reports show, she has been resting well nights.

Note: As a research organization we are endeavoring to make a thorough study of psychic information in relation to human ailments. We will deeply appreciate your cooperation in securing a thorough report on this case.

(1) (a) Did the Reading presented to you describe the condition of the patient? (b) Explain any variation. (c) Give technical diagnosis. (a) Yes. (b) [No response] (c) Epilepsy.

(2) Were the suggestions for treatment in your opinion proper for this condition? Very good.

(3) For what period of time has the patient followed directions given in the Reading under your care? Practically since admission on October 14, 1938.

(4) What results have you observed? Improvement.

(5) Comment. Patient has improved, though occasionally has a seizure, but the seizures are not as severe nor as frequent.

R8. 10/13/39 Dr. A. G. Hildreth’s report (See entire letter under 2008-1 Reports):

“We have a young woman here, Miss [1683], who came to us through your recommendation. We have not cured her and I am not sure that we have been able to benefit her to any great extent, yet I know this, her condition was so chronic and of so many years duration that if she is cured it will take time. She seems brighter, happier, and her physical condition has improved; whether nature has power within that human being to grow back normal condition, no one can know.”

Date of Reading: Sept. 10, 1938, Case No.: 1683-1 & and Jan. 1, 1939. 1683-2.

(PLEASE ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS CAREFULLY)

(1) In your opinion did the analysis of the Reading cover the condition? Partially - After year or more at Still-Hildreth O. San. She was not benefitted mentally.

(2) Give symptoms of condition described correctly? Excessive nervous reaction - Some stomach unrest. Epilepsy symptoms continue.

(3) What was the physician’s analysis of this condition? Epilepsy - from all appearances.

(4) Have the suggestions given in the Reading been followed exactly as outlined? Still-Hildreth Ost. San., Macon, Mo. claimes to have followed your letters.

(5) For how long? 12 to 14 months 1938 - 1939 to November ‘39.

(6) Describe the extent to which improvements have resulted? Some evidence of physical benefit but resulted in bad burn on right lower ear & neck by fall on radiator at Sanatorium.

(7) Comment. She may be benefitted - by osteopathic treatment. She is at Brattleboro Retreat of Brattleboro, Vt.

Dear Miss Davis:

We appreciate very much your kind recommendation of our institution to Mrs. […] and if her sister [2544] is brought to Macon we will, of course, give her our very best attention.

We have not heard from Miss [1683] for some little time. At the time she left the institution her condition was improved, but still occasionally had seizures; however, they did not influence the mental attitude as much as they did in the past. I am sorry this case did not make a complete recovery but we are glad to report there was some benefit during her stay.

R11. 7/60 In Dr. W. N. Pahnke’s breakdown of 96 cases of epilepsy from the Edgar Cayce records, he commented:

Case [1683]. Given in 1939. Female, 42 years old. This case was classified as group 1. The diagnosis of petit mal epilepsy seems justified from the medical work up given by doctors both before and after the patient was admitted to Still-Hildreth Hospital. The reading also confirmed the diagnosis of petit mal epilepsy. However, it appears that the patient also had a type of psychosis in addition to epilepsy. While undergoing the Cayce treatments at the Still-Hildreth Hospital there was some improvement in the epileptic condition but not in the psychotic. However, for the first part of the hospitalization it was not clear that the patient was receiving any more than osteopathic treatments. Later the full treatment was supposedly given.
