This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 24th day of September, 1938, in accordance with request made by the self through husband - Mr. […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mr. [5417].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:10 to 11:25 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, N.Y.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions she has submitted, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes - we have those impressions and those conditions which disturb the better physical functioning of this body, [1689].
-
Now as we find, the conditions which exist in the present are the result and the effect of a condition that existed some time back, with an already disturbed condition in the activity of the pelvic organs.
-
And the condition in the present is as a result of a neuralgia of the womb itself.
-
Hence the natural inflammatory condition which has been a result, that has engorged as well as misplaced same.
-
Then the result of the effect upon the ovaries during the period of menstruation - as before and during the Period - causes the greater disturbances to the body.
-
These of course produce a reaction upon the sympathetic as well as the cerebrospinal system, as to produce very excruciating pains through the abdominal area, as well as through portions of the back - and nausea, inability to eat; and the extenuating headaches that are as it were upon the top of the head; the fullness in the throat, and the activity of those conditions through the vagus center as related to the activity of the balancing through the medulla oblongata of the nerve forces to brain itself.
-
We find that these are the RESULTS or the effects of reactions to the cerebrospinal system; upsetting the whole of the conditions.
-
As we find, there may be two measures that might be taken.
-
The one would be the necessity of a gynecologist that would make for operative measures to remove the disturbing conditions among the pelvic organs.
-
Or, the other - the LONGER method but of a much milder nature - would be to use the manipulative measures to relax the body and the BODY using each day, for a minute, the electrical treatment in which the violet ray with the vaginal applicator would be used to stimulate the activity of the organs of the pelvis throughout; aided by the deeper manipulations through the lumbar, sacral and lower dorsal area - and every other treatment being of a general nature to RELAX the whole of the system. This as we find would require at least two periods of about two to three months’ treatments, every other day; and the vaginal applicator used EVERY day save, of course, during the periods of menstruation.
-
These as we find, then, may be the choice of the body in making for the corrections.
-
When the pain is very severe, it may be eased - as well as causing a more normal flow, by the painting of the center - just above or down to the pubic center - with Aconite and Laudanum; two parts of the Laudanum to one part Aconite; and then the application of Epsom Salts Packs, saturated solution, over same. But do not use these save at periods of very excruciating pain.
-
These all done, as we find we may bring the better conditions for this body, [1689].
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Why is it impossible to sleep during these spells? (A) Owing to the great nervous tension, and those effects especially upon the sympathetic nervous system. Naturally, with the use of sedatives sleep may be attained; but if there will be used the painting of the abdomen with the combination indicated, and then the use of the Epsom Salts Packs, this will relieve sufficiently that there may be sleep - provided there has been ALREADY begun the corrective measures osteopathically AND the use of the vaginal applicator of the violet ray!
-
(Q) These headaches come without warning. Why? (A) The pressures upon the whole of the nervous system, owing to the condition existent in the pelvic system.
These will gradually increase, as greater inflammation is produced in the ovarian areas - UNLESS corrective measures are taken.
- (Q) Why are they more severe now than they have been in the past year and a half? (A) As just indicated, there is a greater inflammation and sympathetic reaction to the ovaries themselves; and these act more regularly than, of course, the valvular force of the uterus or the tubes themselves.
In the matter of the diet, keep to those foods that are body-building, nerve-building.
As a tonic, Codiron would be MOST helpful. Take it for a long period, about one tablet during the EVENING meal; but taken over a LONG period!
Do these things and as we find we will bring the better conditions for this body.
- We are through for the present.

(In case you choose the method WITHOUT the operation, see extra copy [which was enclosed] for osteopath whom you choose to handle the case - and we would suggest one who is in sympathy with Mr. Cayce’s work and who has followed out a number of his Readings with marvelous success; such as:
Dr. Mary Miller, 205 West 57th St., New York City, OR: Dr. Frank Dobbins, 551 Fifth Ave., New York City.
Codiron comes in tablet form, and is manufactured by The Lawrence Laboratories, Chicago, Ill. It sells for $1 a bottle.
At your convenience, we would appreciate your sending us a history of your case to the time of obtaining the Reading. This is valuable for our files.
See directions [which were enclosed] for preparing Epsom Salts Packs, to be used over the area painted with the Laudanum-Aconite solution.)

R1. 2/17/70 Husband’s letter to GD:
“Enclosed is $1 for Xeroxing my wife’s rdg. of 9/24/38, which was forwarded on 2/9/70.
“The facts are that: 1. My wife was operated in 1939 for removal of the womb, etc. I believe this is called a hysterectomy.
The headache condition was not relieved and, in fact, became worse as years went by.
We did make an appointment with Dr. Mary Miller [D.C.], but my wife decided to go through with the operation and never received any treatment with Dr. Miller. THIS I REGRET TO THIS DAY.
However, there is only one drug which relieves my wife’s headaches and this is ‘Cafergot’ - an ergot preparation which restricts the blood vessels. She has tried everything new for headaches, given her by our doctor and during tests at Mayo Clinic, but nothing helps except ‘Cafergot.’ Because there is nothing else, she has been taking these almost every day, when she feels a headache coming on. In fact, she goes to bed feeling perfectly fine and is awakened by these migraine attacks when she is required to take the ‘Cafergot.’
I thought that we should review the rdg. again to see if anything else should or could be done. This occurred to me when I met some women in our town who attend weekly meetings and discuss the works of Edgar Cayce. In fact, I started to read some of the books put out by the Foundation.
Mr. [5417] died several years ago before I left for Calif. in 1966…
We have only one child, a daughter […] who is now married. This answers all your questions. If there is any suggestion or advice, please forward and be assured that it will be appreciated.”
R2. 3/25/70 GD’s note: “Since you are in the Los Angeles area, I suggest that - if you wish to now begin the treatment for the cerebrospinal system which the reading apparently indicated as the cause - you might find it well to get in touch with Dr. M. L. Hotten [D.O.], 207 South A St., Arvin, Calif. [Kern Co.] [mailing address Box 176, 93203]. He is Director of the Osteopathic Division of the Edgar Cayce Foundation. Just in case you do decide to contact him, I am sending him a copy of the reading and this report. Please let us hear.”
