This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 W. 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 16th day of October, 1926, in accordance with request made by Mr. [195].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 12:10 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Ohio.
-
GC: You will have before you the readings on Radio-Active Appliance, and the enquiring mind of [195], … Co., Dayton, Ohio, relative to prescriptions of solutions in connection with Radio-Active Applicator. You will answer the questions as I ask them regarding these.
-
EC: Yes, we have the information as has been given regarding the Radio-Active Appliance, also the enquiring mind of [195].
-
In respect to the Radio-Active Appliance in the simple form, as has been given, the vibrations from same are well for every human individual.
-
In considering the various appliances that may give the vibration from chemical compounds for the body (and the enquiring mind of [195] should then gain the comprehensive condition as respecting this from this - and this applies to the various conditions as have been or as may be given respecting that of applying chemical conditions or vibrations to the body through the Radio-Active Appliance), we find this the theory, or the therapy of this vibrator is from that of the atomic force or vibration as is produced by various chemical compounds and their application through electronic forces to the body - the electronic forces being produced by the action of certain grades of steel or iron and their combination with ice, see? In passing through this (force connected with the body) vibration as set up, each partakes of that of the chemical through which it passes, and is distributed to the body from that center of the body in solar plexus brain, or from those centers about the umbilicus, which are the electronic and atomic vibratory radiations of a human body.
-
As has been given, vibrations of chemicals carrying metal may be given either through vibratory forces of the chemical or by the combination of other elements that are soluble in alcohol - alcohol producing then its vibration, carrying the variation of a metal, or of a vegetable, or of a plant compound, see? Now, in the various stages, we find that the combination of metal only soluble in water, and not in alcohol, alcohol may at times be added in the solution, which would be half and half - always that proportion - after it was soluble, see, or dissolved - for the action of the anode in the solution creates with the electronic vibration a certain character of vibration as is thrown off from the crystallization, or decomposition, or of the metal being thrown down in the reaction, and through same obtains its electronic or its vibratory rate as is necessary for the individual case. Now, where metals are soluble in the alcohol, as well as water, the alcohol is added, or is in solution - EVER a 10% solution, see? ever the 10% solution. This would apply to Iron, Silver, Iodide of Potash, Bromide of Potash, or any metallic solutions and vegetable solutions. In those as are of purely vegetable we use solution in the form of the tincture of the solution, such as is seen in Iodine, Camphor, or any of this nature - Quinine, or of Cocaine, or of Poppy, or of any vegetable combination that may be soluble in water or alcohol. Ever, when such are used, it is first dissolved in the carrier - water or alcohol, see? and then the 10% solution made fifty-fifty with the alcohol. In this manner we find that the alcohol the carrier, or the water the carrier, see? as may be seen.
-
As seen in Gold, this is as of a Chloride - just like Nitrate of Silver, and just like Muriate in Iron, or Tincture in Iron - as the various combinations are given. Each are carried in two, two and a half, three ounce solutions, prepared in the way and manner as has been given, or as IS given for the specific case, see? Now these carried in this way and manner, it will be found that such vibrations - electronic forces, through the atomic force of the medicinal property, or of the compound as may be placed in this, will be for specific conditions as are outlined from time to time in various organisms that need the vibration necessary to set about equalization in nerve or blood supply in the system, and these received, as it were, through the central BRAIN of the body - for their action in this electronic atomic force - ELECTRONIC atomic force - is as that as may be given as this, as an illustration:
-
In the nerve system, the brain is the head, and the active force through which all the conscious sensory consciousness is received. To see one eating produces that vibration - in the salivary gland that sets about the gastric juices of the stomach - one becomes hungry, see? In the central brain the knowledge of subconscious action in the body is located. When the blood (for an instance) becomes deficient, or anemic, the addition of iron, or of gold, or of silver, in various forms or various conditions, adds, through this electronic atomic force, that same action in that portion of the system that creates that reaction in the building or plasm cell in the system as is created in the gland by the action of the nerve system carrying that variation as seen, see? Same condition may exist in adolescent stages of a body, that the ductless glands are clogged - by addition of iodine in system, or where other conditions exist in system in any age where necessitates the action of that vibratory force as is necessary from the various forms of, or combinations of, either metallic forces or of vegetable - these may be added. [GD’s note: 10/19/26 See 179-1, Par. 10-A in re lead anode for iodine attachment.]
-
Now, keep these in this way and manner, and we will find these will give the correct vibration to the body, when the battery is applied and prepared and builded in the way and manner as has been given.
-
We are through.

“There’s a divinity that shapes our ends, rough-hew them how we will.”
On Sunday afternoon, March 31, 1899, in the living room of a little house in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, three people watched a man who could not speak talk in his sleep. The watchers were Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Cayce and a layman, the sleeper was Edgar Cayce. The words spoken by the latter as he slept comprise what is known as the first reading ever given by Edgar Cayce. Its results were immediate. When he went to sleep Mr. Cayce could not speak, his vocal chords were paralyzed. When he awoke they had returned to normal functioning, his voice was natural and clear.
It is a far cry from that little house on the bleak March afternoon of a dying century to the Association of National Investigators, Incorporated, and the Cayce Hospital, at Virginia Beach, Va. It is a far cry indeed, and the vagaries and whims of human frailty carried the cry farther still, ere the inexorableness of Time and the certainty of Fate brought Truth to the harbor of Faith and Love. Yet nothing worthwhile is won without struggle, and the pain and disillusion of Experience bring a greatness to the soul, a sweetness to the heart, and a clearness to the ideal that set us firmly on the King’s Highway and direct our footstep toward the Kingdom of God.
It was a long, hard road for Edgar Cayce, from the first fairy voice of childhood to the first ground broken for the Cayce Hospital. Man through his opaque mist of materialism sees little of the world beyond his length, breadth, and thickness, and because of his own conceit the attempts of truth boomerang from a solid wall of self. How difficult it is to make people understand something they cannot contact with the senses! How discouraging it is to see truth misinterpreted and misapplied, used as the individual sees fit, to suit best the desires of his own nature! How long to the goal it seems when the road is so winding and rough, so studded with stubble, so littered with deadwood, so cluttered with debris!
To conquer self was the first task, and perhaps the hardest, for as Polonius said:
“This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.”
To convince himself that he was not a freak of nature, not an unconscious fraud, not a spiritual charlatan, was first of all the work of Edgar Cayce. For years he lived in self-conscious embarrassment because of his strange peculiarity, for years he feared to give the aid requested of him because he did not know nor understand the thing he did. For years his life was a mental torture, a seething indecision, a labyrinth of ideas, ideals, misbeliefs and disillusions.
From the left came a cry of service, from the right a whisper of gain. Which way Parnassus? No answer came. Time passed, and the mind that could not know of itself, learned from a world that clutched at stars and dragged its soul in mud. Reality stumbling skyward in the illusion of smut taught a lesson etched in pain and failure. The answer became obvious.
“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing.”
To Edgar Cayce had come an ideal, to him was shown the truth. And so he lived, and so he lives, and so he will live forever. He survived the cries that branded him charlatan, quack, spiritualist, clairvoyant, hypnotist, fake and fraud. He survived the misunderstanding, pain, disillusionment, loss of friends and attacks of enemies. He survived the purgatory of ignorance of conquer himself and others, finding peace and happiness in the knowledge of truth and the possession of an ideal.
It was at the September meeting of the American Association of Clinical Research in 1911 that recognition and hope first was given for the work. This meeting was held in the rooms of the Society of Natural History in Boston, and a paper describing the phenomena, written by Dr. W. H. Ketchum, of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, was read. The opinion of the Association was voiced in the sentiment that the work deserved further study and was deserving of commendation and support.
From this first bit of official recognition, this first gleam of hope that he was something more than a freak of Natural law, Edgar Cayce formed the purpose and ideal of his life, a purpose and ideal which is now that of the Association of National Investigators, and which is expressed in a single word - Service.
It was natural that Mr. Cayce should conceive of a hospital or sanitarium, where the people he diagnosed could be treated as he prescribed, under physicians in accord with the work; and it was natural that he should go to his own peculiar source of information for advice concerning it. The first reading taken on the establishing of a hospital approved of the idea and outlined the method of going about such a venture. On February 11, 1911, it advised Virginia Beach as a site for this hospital. On June 19, 1928, the first ground was broken for the Cayce Hospital. What happened during the seventeen years elapsing between the creation of the idea and its material culmination?
It is a long time between the idea and the creation, the dream and the reality. In 1911 Edgar Cayce began working toward the establishment of a hospital. On February 11, 1929, the first patient was treated in the Cayce Hospital at Virginia Beach.
There is not much use in reciting the hardships of those seventeen years. Let us pass over them lightly, as we passed over those years before the faith and ideal became visualized. From Hopkinsville, Kentucky, to Selma, Alabama; from Memphis, Tennessee, to Birmingham, Alabama, and westward to the oil fields of Texas, the trail of dreams led this man and the loved ones who followed him. It was a hard road, and a long one, strewn with bitterness and broken hopes. Yet always the faith remained, the ideal was firm, and the readings repeated the admonition, go to Virginia Beach.
Why was such a wonderful work so difficult to begin? Why was such an ideal so hard to attain? Nothing is worthwhile until we fight for it, what comes easily is seldom appreciated. Though the faith and the love were firm, the mind and spirit and body had not yet been sufficiently tried and attuned. Those associated did not understand, there was not the harmony of an organization, in short, the time was not ripe. Many people and groups of people took up the work and planned to establish a hospital. Each was unsuited to the task it seems, and eventually they dropped it. The time was not ripe, the vibrations and conditions of the Universal forces and the earthly conditions were not properly adjusted for the happening of such an event. Time passed. It seemed to Edgar Cayce that things were going round in circles. The thing he saw so clearly, the thing he desired so earnestly, was but a misty haze in the minds of others. Patiently he waited.
At Dayton, Ohio, in January, 1925, the first germ of an idea was born for The Association of National Investigators. From that time on, like a babe in the mother’s womb, it grew slowly toward an inevitable culmination. Conditions had become right, people had come in accord, and Time had slipped into place. The rest was merely adjustment and readjustment, smoothing out details and making arrangements. The result was a certainty, the dream a reality, the desire a gratification.
In September of 1925 Edgar Cayce and his family moved to Virginia Beach, establishing a residence at 115 West 35th St., an address grown familiar to many since then as the office of the Association and the place where all readings are given. Here the work was continued in the old way, obviously. But all the time the Association was planning the culmination of one dream and the beginning of another.
On May 6, 1927, The Association of National Investigators was incorporated. On June 19, 1928, the first ground was broken for the Cayce Hospital. On November 11, 1928, the Cayce Hospital was dedicated. On February 11, 1929, the first patient was treated in the Cayce Hospital.
The dream is a reality, the ideal is achieved, the WORK has BEGUN.
The world goes on unheeding. The waves of the ocean have not ceased their beating, the season its changing, the sun its rising, the world its evolution. Only something has happened. Something definite has begun, something tangible has taken form, and a small group of people look toward a new horizon. The world whirls on, unknowing. Meanwhile we work. Someday the world will stop its mad racing to listen, and heed. Time only knows when it will be. For the present let us make sure we will be prepared. Let us take up our happy burdens and start forward, trusting the others to follow where we show the way.
The time has come for beginning what this publication purposes to do. We have formed the nucleus, laid the foundation on a strong rock of suffering and final understanding, and we are ready to promulgate and project the truths we have learned to the world at large. That they will reject with laughter and scorn is natural, that they will eventually accept and approve is inevitable. The purpose of this publication is not didactic, explanatory, or even that of propaganda and exploitation. It is merely to record in systematic fashion the advances and achievements of this association. Journalism is the world’s contemporary historian, and as a specific journalist it is the purpose of this magazine to reflect and record the work of our organization. Though primarily for our members, it is inevitable that it will fall into the hands of those outside, who will wonder and question its meaning and contents. To those people we extend an invitation to inquire and study our work, to visit our offices at Virginia Beach, and to join with us in a brotherhood of searcher for truth, for ourselves, for the world, and for God.
To the members of the Association who will receive this first issue we ask the tolerance of innovation and the assistance of co-workers. It is your magazine, open to your views and suggestions, and we will gladly welcome and appreciate your criticism, contributions, and general support.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
By Morton H. Blumenthal
[EDITOR’S NOTE: The following article was written as an editorial in the Association “Blue Book” by Mr. Blumenthal. It was reprinted in the British magazine “Two Worlds,” which is “A Weekly Journal Devoted to the Phenomena, Philosophy, and Progress of Spiritualism.” A copy of the magazine was sent to Mr. Blumenthal by his friend Prof. Hibbens. Also in the issue was the following tribute to Mr. Blumenthal’s book “Heaven on Earth,” which is available to all at the Association Offices at Virginia Beach, Va.
“Heaven On Earth” is the title of a new book being published by The Association of National Investigators, Inc., of Virginia, America, of which the first volume has just been issued. The book is written by Mr. Morton H. Blumenthal, President of the Association, and is being printed at intervals in pamphlet form. The first volume is well written and tastefully produced, and boasts a valuable foreword by Prof. W. G. Hibbens, B. Sc., of the Sheffield University. It is the hope of the publishers that when the different volumes have been completed they will be gathered together and published in book form.”
Prof. Hibbens says the “Two Worlds” has the largest circulation of any publication of its field in England.]
“Deep in the heart of each and every right thinking person there dwells the ideal that acts as the mainspring of our life, namely, love for the Divine Creator. Regardless of our concept of God, we love Him for His deeds, which, of course, embrace creation. He has created us as an image of Himself and His universe (as a drop containing every element of the ocean is an image of the whole body of water), and has given to us the opportunity of enjoying like Him a consciousness of ourselves being alive. Being a duplication of Him, in potentiality, we are alive to His work of creation. By development of our potential abilities we become self-aware of the process of creation being our own work as well as His. We love Him, then, for His gift of life to us, for His promise that the gift shall be eternal, and, above all, for His long suffering as well as patience with our sins, which are born of ignorance, during the process of our achieving through earthly experience necessary potential development. Indeed, many of us, although bearing no malice, curse the Creator in one breath, while He furnishes us the power to draw another.
“We defile our bodies with ill-formed habits, while His pulsating, life-giving flow sustains those bodies and continues in process of creating new and other beautiful physiques. Sometimes, in a secret moment, while regarding the majesty and beauty of nature, or while marvelling at the wonderful phenomena of a new-born baby, or while at prayer either at home or in church, we turn our hearts to God, and pour forth our love. Then do we intuitively feel His forgiveness, His infinite mercy and patience, and the divine inflow of His love. His is the potentiality that manifests itself as the phenomena of life, whether of creation or our subjective selves, and thus we belong to Him and He to us. Truly, by deeds has the Lord merited and created the love we bear Him. We, ourselves, are an intellectual result or manifestation of this spiritual God’s process. We are also in internal substance the very same essence that composes this spiritual God. We are each of us an integral part of God in the intellectual form of man, that this spiritual Godly essence takes in the earthly environment, and know ourselves to be that. Thus it is that we are free to live our own concept of life. Thus it also is that whatever concept we choose to express in and of our own life is representative of our idea of God. Since we are that which the life essence of God becomes in materialized form, we will likewise remain this same essence when we change at death from the materialized form to become one with the manifesting spiritual essence itself. From the changed viewpoint that we will then enjoy as an internal force of intelligence, we shall come to know ourselves to be that which God is in essence, just as we know ourselves to be that which the spiritual godly essence changes itself to become in the materialized form it takes in this earthly environment. God then has created, of Himself, a portion (each of our own selves) that by virtue of His process of creation becomes able to achieve a companionate self-awareness and individuality in union with and one with each and every self-conscious individuality, or portion, that God in one potential spiritual essence embraces.”
The Importance of Research.
Through psychic research may we gain the necessary knowledge that will fit us to work on earth for creation, as does the mighty creative energy of life function to sustain creation throughout the whole of that called space. Then may we and shall we inscribe our names in the book of life, and in that chapter that has to do with earthly experiences, and thus make our deeds create for us merited love in the hearts and minds of the right-thinking portion of humanity. We shall strive to throw our influence on the side of the good and the spiritual, in order that the generations of men may cling to the link that binds them to the universe, to the noble, the beautiful, the honourable, and to the whole ideal while in this earthly process of development, rather than permit the influences of the purely material life to drag the inner developing potentiality that manifests itself in the form of physical personalities in the mire of animalistic materialism, that turns love into passion and adultery, nobleness into wrath, hatred and temper, honour into greed and selfishness, beauty into filth and the imagination into slavery to physical desires.
This is the ideal of the Association of National Investigators, Inc., a new organization which has been established to foster and encourage physical, mental and spiritual benefit amongst its members. The Society is founded upon the work of Mr. Edgar Cayce, a well-known American psychic, and has its headquarters at Virginia Beach, Virginia. The Society possesses its own hospital, where special facilities are afforded for the treatment of disease. Located on the same site is a library and lecture hall, which also serve as the headquarters for psychic experiments and investigation. The organization has somewhat similar objects to the Britten Memorial project in Manchester, and both are deserving of every success and support.
WHAT IS TRUTH?
BY EDGAR CAYCE
[The following is one of the lectures delivered by Mr. Cayce at the Cayce Hospital, Virginia Beach, Va.]
We have spoken on various subjects from Sunday to Sunday. Mr. Blumenthal in his addresses has told you something about life and its projection into the physical plane. From time to time I have been speaking of these things that have had to do principally with material THINGS of life, or those things that have to DO with the material, or putting them in such a way and manner that we may be able to use them in our everyday life.
As I have said, I am going to try to talk to you this afternoon about Truth - or “What Is Truth?”
I realize that I am assuming a big job. I’ve read but very little of the philosophers of the ages, but we know during all the years there has been the continual cry of, “What Is Truth?”
We often hear it said that Truth is evasive, Truth is naked, Truth will not be downed - but what is Truth?
We remember, if we turn to the books of the New Testament, that possibly the greatest moment in history was when Pilate asked of the Master, “What is Truth?” Possibly that was the ONLY time it could have been answered in one or two words that would have at least satisfied the greater portion of the thinking world today - but he didn’t wait for the answer. Yet we know that the Master said that He CAME that He might show the way unto Truth. All right. Then we know Truth is something that we may be shown.
When we speak of A truth, or THE truth, or TRUTH, we possibly mean different things. You will remember, those of you who have read the little story - and I’m sure most of you have - there were three men of Hindustan who went to see the elephant, but all of them were blind. Now that’s US! We are all blind, but we are seeking the truth; seeking the truth because we are very much in the same position as the three men who went to see the elephant. One of these stumbled against the side of the elephant, and he said, “I perceive, without a doubt, the elephant is very like a wall.” Was that the truth to him? Another one, as he stumbled about the animal, found his trunk, and said, “I perceive with a certainty, the elephant is very like a tree.” Was he correct in his supposition? The other man, as he stumbled about, got hold of the tail, and said, “I perceive the elephant is very much like a rope.” Now were they in error? Did they have the truth? Or did they have only a portion of the truth? Or did they have any of the truth?
We often say that any movement of any character succeeds in so far as it has a portion of the truth. We may be sure THAT’S truth; that any movement succeeds in so far as that movement has the truth. Then don’t worry because you disagree with any individual as to what your conception of any movement may be - don’t think that they are going to hell because they don’t think as you do! Remember the three men that went to see the elephant - just remember that! Keep that in your mind. KNOW that they are right, but they are wrong as YOU would see it, with your eyes wide open.
As Mr. Blumenthal has been telling us, life in its projection into this material plane has been a constant growth. Then, if we are to believe the things that have been presented to us, and AS they are presented to us, we know that even Truth ITSELF may be a GROWTH INTO that understanding in which we will be able to apply it in our everyday life.
I am sure that we believe God is Love. The love for an individual, then, is an expression of the force, or manifested force, that we define as Love. There was this experience that came to a man. He was very much in love with his wife. He thought more of her than anything in the world, but God saw fit to take her home, and when he erected a monument in the cemetery he had inscribed on it: “The light of my life has gone out.” He couldn’t find anything that could satisfy him with this separation, but after a while he met a young lady whom he fell very much in love with, and he was altogether mistaken about his first love being able to satisfy every thing in his life - there was something else that had been added, he had gained the knowledge of someone else being able to fill up a portion of his life. The young lady, knowing about this inscription, said to him, “I might consent to be your wife, but I don’t think I could ever do that as long as the inscription remains as it is.” So he went about to find a man who could correct this for him, and as the man who had charge of such things told him he saw how he could rectify this, he went ahead with the wedding. When they came back from their honeymoon they went to see how it read, and this is what they found: “The light of my life has gone out - but I’ve struck another match.”
So, you see, those are individual experiences. When we read, or get the idea of some particular thought, or some particular rule, gradually we build into OUR own selves the idea that we have GOTTEN the whole thing. Now IS Truth such a thing that those who have been followers of Mohammed have ALL of the truth? Have they who have been the followers of Moses the law-giver, all the truth? Or has it rather been a growth in our individual lives, and what may be truth to one individual possibly may not, in the experience of the other individual, answer at all? Does that make the other any less true to the other individual? Did this man love the second woman any less from his experience of being in love before?
Then, is it possible if this be true, that this is a changeable thing, is a growth? Will it be possible for us to find something of which we can say, “THIS is truth,” and KNOW that it will answer in everything or every way that life may present itself to us? I believe that we can. You may differ with me. I don’t think, however, that you will be able to REFUTE what will be my definition, or what I will be able to say IS Truth. But many of you will say, “Well, have you been given some peculiar power, that you have knowledge of what Truth is, and can answer the question that has been sought throughout all the ages, so that we may know what TRUTH is?” Let’s see if this will not answer the whole question in our lives. First we must know that, if we are to accept any word, or any follower as a truth, or THE truth, or Truth, we must be sure of the AUTHORITY that we quote. We must be very sure of our foundation, or platform, for what we have assumed. Where would we begin, as we would say, to assume something as being true, or a place to begin? Or how far could we go with this formula? Or where would we begin with this formula, so that we might know, when we hear a thing, that to US it is Truth? We must recognize these facts in our lives: there is a physical body, there is a spiritual body. We know the physical body is dependent upon its physical attributes for its development. It is also the temple, or the dwelling place of the spiritual body. The spiritual body, we know, is of the Creator - whatever we may call the Creator. It comes from the same thing - even if we go back to the scientific reasoning and say it begins from the lowest form of life. WHEREVER we begin, we have to say there is something beyond that where it has developed, whether you believe in evolution, creative evolution, or what not, it all has to come back to the very same thing, AND if I can answer this I don’t believe I’m wrong in saying that you can take it from any standpoint you want to take it, but this IS Truth:
THAT WHICH KEPT BEFORE YOUR MENTAL MIND, YOUR SPIRITUAL MIND, WILL CONTINUE TO DEVELOP YOU UPWARD! That which, held before you, will continue to develop you upward.
Now, let’s see how this fits in with what Mr. Blumenthal says of evolution. Let’s see if this applies to any of the phases that may present themselves, or to any the questions you would want to ask: THAT WHICH, HELD BEFORE YOUR MENTAL VISION, WILL CONTINUE TO DEVELOP YOU UPWARD. Not that which satisfies selfish purpose at all, no! Not that which tells you whether it is wrong to go fishing on Sunday or not, or to play baseball on Sunday. Not that which answers you in that. It answers you, yes - but that which will continue to develop YOU upward?
All right! What do we mean by developing upward? That which will enable you to hold the vision of that which YOU worship as YOUR God. Every man, every individual, every OBJECT, has its conception of its superior position. We would say, “Well, would it answer the Indian who is looking for his Happy Hunting Ground? Why would it not answer? That which will enable him to hold before him that which HE worships as HIS God is Truth to him.
Now, what have we taken for granted? We have taken for granted that man has a mind, that man has a body - a physical body, a spiritual body. He has a SOUL, if you choose! We have taken for granted that his mental body is controlled by his mental being. His soul, or his spiritual body is controlled by his subconscious, or his spiritual mind. That which will continue to hold before the individual that which he worships as his God will continue, then, to develop the individual towards that which he worships. Now, does that answer your question? Then you will say, “What would have been the Master’s answer to Pilate’s question?” “I came into the world to do no other than conduct you into that which is Truth.”
Truth is not a thing, then, that we can see, that your eyes or body, or ears, or things of that kind - but it is the essence with which an individual builds faith, hope, and trust. That is Truth! That essence that we are enabled to hold before our mental vision, is truth. Will it build your body? It will! Will it heal the sick? It will!
A few days ago I was talking to some people - they were telling me about a book that had been written by some of the masters from the far East. I had never seen the book before, but when I opened it to read it I knew what was in it before I read it. I don’t know how, nor why, but I knew the experiences that I was going to encounter. I don’t know why except THIS: I have been continuing to think of how I might answer this question. With the first four or five pages I found that in this book, this ONE thing was continually held before the individual; that which you hold before yourself, to create that image you worship, that will develop you always upward, and will continue to enable you to know truth!
Truth, then, being a growing thing, truth being a thing that will develop you, is a something that is ENTIRELY IN ACTION! Not inactive, but IN ACTION! That’s what God is! For in every MOVEMENT that has ever been, it has been a continual upward development, or upward toward that which IS Truth.
If you hold malice, you can become one of the meanest persons in the world. You know that if you continue to send out thought (that may become a miracle or a crime), you create just those very same cross-currents in your mind. What is prayer but simply attuning yourself to that which you are seeking assistance through? That’s all prayer is - attuning yourself to that very same thing. That becomes Truth when it becomes in action. When it goes into action, to YOU it becomes Truth. It’s your own conception of what your God is. If it makes you better to the very thing you worship, or more in accord with the thing you worship, THAT you become, whether it’s downward or upward, you go whichever way your standard is set.
Q. Yet if we are going backward, how can we know? A. You can’t make it anything else, because to you it’s truth, because that’s what you are following. That becomes truth to you. That which you continue to follow becomes truth whether it’s negative or positive. As we learn it from that viewpoint, it becomes true; that is, whatever we hold that continues to build upward is Truth. Now, as to who is to say whether you are building up, or as to how near it brings you to that thing you worship AS your God, because God IS Truth, if you continue to hold that, you may develop to that, but to someone else whose God might be something else, that wouldn’t be Truth.
Q. That applies right here in your hospital, etc. A. If it answers one, it answers all. That’s what it stands for; that which may develop in the individual that understanding of its relation to its Maker and to its fellow man. Or, as we come back to the very same thing I said in Sunday School this morning, I’ve been studying a long while, trying to understand what is meant by the second commandment, and I never did know what it meant - that is, satisfactorily to my own mind - until the other night. The first commandment, as we know, is, “Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and thy mind, etc.” The second is, “Thou shall not make unto thee any graven image.” Why? Because if you make an image it becomes your God. But if you have for your God that which is within your own individual self, you yourself being a portion of the Creator, you will continue to build upward, to it!
MY CONCEPT OF GOD
BY MORTON H. BLUMENTHAL
Revised from a lecture delivered at the Cayce Hospital, Virginia Beach, Va., Sunday, September 22nd, 1929.
Mind of the Creator as Distinguished from the Mind of the Created.
My lecture today is entitled “My Concept of God.” I will lecture on the same subject two weeks from today. Thereafter, or four weeks from today, my lecture will be “Heaven and Hell.” We will discuss “Heaven and Hell” in the light of the conception we have formed of evolution. Some of the questions that I will endeavor, in my own humble way, to take up, will be “What is Heaven and Hell? Is de-evolution down to a Hell, possible as a condition of consciousness as well as evolution to that condition of consciousness call Heaven? How do we attain through a process of de-evolution the condition called Hell, and by contrast how do we attain by a process of evolution the condition called Heaven?” After this lecture I will conclude the season with a series of talks on reincarnation.
During the past summer months I have endeavored, in my own way, to present my concept of evolution and my experiences upon which that concept is founded. Today, I will try to initiate a series of two lectures that in reality will do nothing more than sum up all our past discussions regarding the subject of evolution. I would not dare be so bold or officious as to insist upon the acceptance of my concept of God by the member of this intelligent audience. My concept of God is the result of my own personal experience, just as is the case with every individual, and, (as James points out in his “Varieties of Religious Experiences”), as one’s experience grows, the scope of consciousness becomes broader, and as a result one’s concepts change accordingly.
Truth enters our consciousness through the route of experience. Experience itself is a process of mind, physical or otherwise, that awakens in each of us an ever broadening realization of the truth. Whether your own individual experiences have led you to the conclusion that mine have, is a matter only you yourself may determine. My true aim in delivering these lectures is to help each individual, or each individual mind, or better, each individuality of mind, to become so broadened in experience as to be able to reach and enjoy a higher state of consciousness, and thus achieve a deeper and more useful conception of truth, or God. As you hear me speak my heart, then, I am sure your own good sense will inform you of the fact that I am not seeking to establish or propound any new religion, or detract from, or add to, any existing order of religion.
Mr. Cayce’s lecture last week on “What is Truth” dovetails beautifully into the pragmatic ideas of truth that I have just spoken of. In considering then, the result of my humble efforts today, to give “My Concept of God,” I would appreciate your considering in collaboration therewith, Mr. Cayce’s lecture on “Truth.” The lecture was, and is, probably the best dissertation on the subject of pragmatic truth, as propounded by a former psychologist of Harvard University, namely, William James, that the layman has had the opportunity to hear since Mr. James wrote his work on Pragmatism. Now, I know Mr. Cayce has never read Pragmatism, yet thinking his subject out in relationship to truth, he stood before you, and in very simple and understandable terms delivered a most enlightening lecture on the deep subject of Truth from a pragmatic viewpoint. You, who heard this very excellent lecture last Sunday, will easily understand what I mean when I say I am giving a concept of truth or God, as it exists from my personal viewpoint.
Now, how do we know anything in this world? Our Saturday afternoon class, studying Ouspensky’s “Tertium Organum,” is learning that the outside world and life is what our own inner sensations, as well as ideas founded upon sensation, tell us it is. In other words, it is the operation of the mind that enables us to know anything, whether that knowledge is in terms of abstract realities such as good, evil, God, truth, values, etc., or whether it is physical realities in the form of houses, trees, sidewalks, oceans, lakes, mountains, fields, tables, chairs, etc. The animal kind of operation of mind does not enable him to form concepts, and therefore, he cannot know of such realities as Good, Evil, Value, Truth, God, etc. The operation of that mind enables the animal to know about the world in two dimensions only - i.e., the world outside of himself would consist of surface realities, each separated from the other. The sides of what to us is a three dimensional house, would to the dog, for example, separate two dimensional realities - i.e., each side would be a separate thing existing in space by itself and would have no connection with any other wall or surface, just as two houses are two separate individual things existing in space, apart from each other to us. On the other hand, our kind of operation of mind enables us to form not two dimensional perceptions (animal kind of mind), but also three dimensional conceptions or ideas, and thus obtain knowledge of such abstract realities as Good, Evil, etc. It so operates as to make the outside world, to us, different three dimensional realities - i.e., houses, trees, oceans, sidewalks, chairs, tables, space, etc.
Science, however, has reduced these things that occupy space to a oneness, (in cause), with space. Whatever space is in substance, that also our world and everything in our world and any other world as in substance, says Dr. Whitney. It must be evident, then, that mind, being part of the animal and ourselves, must likewise be in substance this same one element, yet that part of the element that enables the latter to be conscious or capable of experience of some kind.
In our world it would be a consciousness or experience of the sensuous kind, made manifest in animal and man. That this part of the original element, (call it life, creative energy, ELAN VITAL, Spirit, God, or what you will), called Consciousness is capable of different degrees of development is made manifest in the low form of consciousness exhibited in the vegetable and mineral kingdom, (flowers, plants, trees, etc.), and again in the low form demonstrated in the lower animal kingdom, and higher form made evident in the higher animal kingdom and still higher developed kind manifested in consciousness - not only of man. In the latter form there is shown the ability of self consciousness, but the ability of the original element, creative energy, life, (or whatever name we may choose to give it), to know itself to be that which it is in the physical form called man, and therefore in any other than physical form, or in its elemental state.
As shown by science, this world, including ourselves, is but a manifested FORM of the original elemental substance. Therefore, that part of this elemental life essence (unknowable to our kind of mind) that nevertheless constitutes the substance of space and all that is in space, that part of this elemental essence then, called mind or consciousness, would manifest the kind of consciousness that corresponds to the kind of form the life element takes or becomes in any field of operation. In our field of operation or in this section it operates to become a physical FORM both as regards that part of it that becomes the form of matter and that part of it that becomes physical consciousness, and this whether the latter is in the lower developed state of the mineral, vegetable and lower animal kingdom, or in higher developed state of mind in the higher animal kingdom, or still higher evolved state in man. It demonstrates its material kind of consciousness to be that called physical or sensuous - the kind, for example, possessed by animal and man.
The substance of life, (of matter, mind and motion) with the portion called consciousness, does evolve to a point, that, changing into physical form, becomes intellectual man, and from this changed physical viewpoint, (a change called birth), would know itself to be that which it becomes in manifested materialized FORM - i.e., our own selves, or that which we mentally and physically know ourselves to be.
It is from this physical viewpoint that we know about life, whether it is about realities imagined such as ideas of good, evil, God, etc., or about lower evolved physical forms such as trees, flowers, houses, chairs, etc. The latter kind of realities are formations of this life essence of a physical kind, whereas abstract realities such as good, evil, value, etc., are a higher evolved formation of life in physical form
- i.e., a formation of life in its manifested physical form of man’s mind. Our mind represents life in physical form, and so does the world outside of ourselves represent a lower, and in the case of vegetable and mineral, a still lower developed physical formation of this one life essence the substance (whatever it may be), that manifests in materialized form the dual conditions of form plus consciousness. In the form of rocks, trees, oceans, lakes, etc., it includes so low a degree of consciousness as to not be apparent to our observation. In the form of the animal it includes a higher developed degree of consciousness. In the man form it includes a still higher developed degree of consciousness - even self consciousness. Thought forms such as Good, Evil, God, Virtue, Bad, etc., do not possess the physical limitations of life in lower materialized from [from?] - i.e. are not measurable either in terms of one dimension of length, or two in terms of length and height, or in three dimension of length, or two in terms of length and height, or in three dimensions in terms of length, height and breadth.
Man in mind must not only be self conscious of being that which life is in physical form, but being in potentiality that which life is in its elemental essence, man must be potentially self conscious of being that which be - life is in internal substance, as well as externally self conscious of being that which be - life is in physical form. Intellectually he knows himself to be the latter; intuitively, subconsciously he knows himself to be the latter. With his whole mind he imagines outside three dimensional formations such as forms of tables, chairs, houses, etc., or represents in his imagination internal 4th dimensional formations, such as ideas of good, evil, etc. Likewise through the use of the imagination in externalized physical form he self-consciously makes externalized physical contracts and relationships with other men and the outside world. With this same imagination he, from within his own mind, self, being, makes internal elemental contracts and relationships with higher states of mind than the physical form state of other men, i.e., with 4th and higher dimensional beings or individualities that are life in its elemental state rather than in its physical form, and who imagine themselves to be this.
But what must this substance of space and of things of consciousness be to another kind of operation of mind - i.e., what does mind not changed into a physical form (prior to birth or after death) becomes aware, for self, of this life essence being? It is logical that if our sensuous mind tells us it is a physical kind of three dimensional space, and that the world and we ourselves are three dimensional things in space, then another kind of operation of mind other than the physical kind would enable the observer to know about the one substance of space, of the essence of things in space, of that creative energy that is doing the manifesting to be changed into the atom and of the same spirit, or to us unknowable quality, that in other fields of operation changes into other forms, possessing other MINDS of consciousness than the sensuous kind. Such a being would cognize his own self and the outside world as being this one element, (i.e., as being the ONE, his fourth dimensional viewpoint tells him life is), rather than being different three dimensional things, (including ourselves), occupying a three dimensional space, which is what the three dimensional viewpoint of our physical mind tells us life in physical form is. The latter viewpoint would then represent that of life in physical form, i.e., of our own sensuous or physical mind. The former fourth dimensional viewpoint would not be limited to finite observation, as already shown, (and in spite of our finite minds, we admit life or the universe to be infinite), but would be infinite or of a higher dimensional character, and represent the kind of viewpoint possessed by this one element or essence of life, or God, when not in physical form. It would represent the mind that governs the life element that operates on it to create or change it into the different universal forms, one of which is the physical of this world. It would represent in man the potential or subconscious ability to be conscious and self conscious of life in its elemental rather than physical form and state, or of man’s potential, and submerged higher kind of operation of mind, and therefore innate, if submerged, higher dimensional viewpoint. Not changed into the physical form of man, (prior to birth and after death) it would represent this higher kind of operation of mind itself - this higher dimensional viewpoint not limited to any three dimensional terms, and therefore, would be the creative mind, or that of the Creator, with all the greater powers and enlarged fields of application that must accompany such a higher dimensional viewpoint. It would be the mind of the Creator, and would be self-conscious of being life in elemental essence, and according to the point evolved, would be self-aware of being the quality that is in many split operations, to make manifest in many states of consciousness and many different formations, only one of which is the physical and sensuous state life achieves in form and consciousness in this material world. We are that split off-spring of life that this higher kind of mind has formed - created, and are that in substance which this higher kind of being is in substance, but we are now this in a manifested physical form. From our physically formed three dimensional viewpoint we know ourselves to be that - i.e., that which this elemental essence operates to become after changing into physical form. I am that, but being that in its physically formed state, know myself to be a physically formed manifestation of that. We then are the created, and know God from the viewpoint of our limited three dimensional physical kind of mind. But to know what God really is, and that we split into different created formations, even into different equal parts (we each of us), to know this we must reach into our own consciousness to obtain knowledge that only the higher dimensional viewpoint of our inner soul or subjective being may bring into our imagination or consciousness. We must, in spite of our three dimensional, finite, physical viewpoint, understand the inner infinite, higher dimensional experiences that the inner subconscious mind may be induced to bring through imagination into our consciousness, but which visioning, hunches, premonitive or intuitive thoughts, experiences, or spontaneous ideas we will fail to understand, unless we know something of the logic, of the higher dimensional viewpoint.
Such experiences would be as illogical to our three dimensional viewpoint and three dimensional logic, as a dream of a three dimensional house would be to the two dimensional dimensional mind and two dimensional logic of the animal. The animal. The latter could understand his dream if he could reason that four independent two dimensional surface realities could be so connected by angles as to form one whole, connected three dimensional reality. Likewise we MAY learn that our subconscious or introspective experiences demonstrate the existence of the fact that what to us are spacially separated three dimensional realities, are really connected together, (the space and things that occupy space), to the fourth dimensional viewpoint, to form one-fourth dimensional whole or reality. We may reason what the higher dimensional viewpoint must be, (see Ouspensky’s “Tertium Organum”), and then experience it to be that, by heeding, recording and studying our introspective experiences, in the light of what we reason the higher than three dimensional physical viewpoint and logic to be.
To return then, to our consideration of God. In the light of knowledge that mind in one form or another makes it possible for us to obtain, we have shown that if our mind is limited, then our knowledge of the world, and also life in the abstract, is limited. If our mind is unlimited, then our knowledge is unlimited. If our mind is finite, then our knowledge of the world and of life is limited to finite terms. If our mind is infinite, then our knowledge of the world and of life becomes infinite. It is the operation of our physical KIND of mind in terms of sensations and three dimensional ideas that tells us, or gives us knowledge of the world being hard or soft, or wet or dry, or tall or small, or of being three dimensional space and three dimensional things or objects that occupy space. We admit that this world is the effect of the work of the Creator, or is that side of life which pertains to things that have been created, and thus is the result of some higher kind of controlling intelligence of kind of mind in a process, which does the creating.
We also know that things that occupy space, as well as space itself, are but forms of motions, as science has indicated. But motion or vibration is what our sensations and ideas tell us it is, just as are the crystalized forms of motions, namely, space and things that occupy space are what our sensations and ideas tell us they are. Therefore, the limitation of our mind limits our knowledge of what motion or vibration is, just as it limits our knowledge of that which vibration acts to become in crystalized form of material things, (chairs, tables, houses, trees, animals, etc.), and the space these things occupy. Motion or vibration is a phenomenon, or result of some, to our limited finite minds; an unknowable infinite quality that composes the substance of space, and all things that occupy space, including our own selves.
This substance that is doing the moving or vibrating is unknowable to our sensations and to our three dimensional physical mind, because this infinite substance of infinite space is not measurable in terms of finite three dimensions. We know one house, is different from another house because both houses are separated from each other by space, or in other words, one house and the other house, and the space that divides the two houses are different independent three dimensional realities, because our physical minds so operate as to make the world, (whatever it may be in reality), become for us divided into different three dimensional realities. Yet science, (and I refer you to Dr. Whitney’s experiments), has reduced the two houses and space to one and the same primal element, namely, to the essence of motion or vibration, whatever that primal element may be. We do not know what this primal element is, because it is not measurable in terms of three dimensions, and our physical mind so operates as to only be able to measure in limited, finite terms of three dimensions, namely, length, heighth and breadth. Our mind separates things into those classifications, bounded by the three dimensions of heighth, breadth and depth. Thus one three dimensional object called house, is made by the operation of our physical or objective mind to be separated from another limited three dimensional, physical reality, called house, by a third three dimensional physical property called space. But science has reduced space and things that occupy space to one source, namely, motion or vibration. It says houses and space are but FORMS of vibration. The substance that is doing the vibrating in materialized form is the same as that which is vibrating to become celestial forms, or bodies (stars, planets, etc.) says Dr. Whitney. Thus, in substance, this essence is not to be divided off into different three dimensional sections, but is one in essence whether in that FORM called space, or that form called things, and which latter we say, occupy or exist in space.
The mind that is capable of cognizing life in its elemental original state must not be of a kind that so operates as to only be able to divide it up into different three dimensional forms, but must be that kind of operation of mind that is not bound to cognize life broken up in different three dimensional and thus individualized things, (things divided by space), but must be a kind of mind unlimited by any such three dimensional kind of operations - i.e., must be a mind operating from a fourth or higher dimensional kind of operation of mind.
In the physical form of man, the physical body and three dimensional physical form-mind divides the self man knows himself to be from the rest of life in all its outside physical formations. This experience allows mind to develop and obtain power of dividing self from the rest of life, and of becoming sufficiently individualized as to make life take outside formations representative of this internal developing individuality. At the change back into elemental form, (at death), a physical form, (the physical body), no longer automatically divides self from the rest of life, but rather an acquired mental power (will), and development of potential mental abilities, enables self to make life a oneness, (that self cognizes life to be from the higher dimensional viewpoint of mind in elemental state) to be rather that self, as the individual is, and that which life mentally projects outside of self as a form. I become that which life in oneness is, and change it to become what I choose to project it away from myself to form. To do this I must have developed mental power of will, and mental abilities of self application while in the physical form, in which state a physically formed body and mind automatically divide outside life and my individual self into two different things, and thus enable me to build in my mind knowledge of myself being it, and power of myself being THAT, in or of it, that may use it to form of it whatever I choose. Should I abandon my will completely to domination by life in its materialized formation, then mental power to realize my individuality in it, and to use it for my developed individual self, is not obtained; and thus upon change into elemental state, my mental power is not sufficiently great to draw, (from this higher dimensional viewpoint) a line between that which I am in individuality and that which I am in one life essence. In such a case death brings a mental state of chaos and one that achieves the sense of a lost or foggy state of self consciousness in and as part of life in its elemental oneness.
This one element is the substance of all space, and holds all of its own formations, or things, or worlds, in place inside of itself, as a trunk of a tree holds all branches in place as different formations or parts of its own self. The higher dimensional kind of mind would recognize life in this one elemental state, in its entirety. This would be the viewpoint of the Creator’s mind. Such a being would use life in its elemental state to change it into different forms or states of being, represented in the different worlds or sections. One of these CREATED FORMS in this material world, in which the state of being is the lower physical kind possessed by ourselves, animals, plants and minerals. The highest development of that part of the elemental life force called mind is made manifest in created physical form in man, or in other words, the kind, or form of mind possessed by the CREATED (as regards man) is a three dimensional physical kind.
We must first distinguish between the limited powers and viewpoint of the three dimensional physical side of mind possessed by the created (our physical selves) and the higher powers, (the broader, deeper viewpoint in our subconscious mind or subjective being), possessed by the Creator. We see and use life from a limited three dimensional viewpoint, - and therefore, to us the world of physical realities is of a limited three dimensional kind of reality. Changed from the physically formed state, mind no longer operates in terms limited to material form, but operates in terms of the one essence, (of which mind is a part), that is the substance of material forms, i.e., of all creation. This essence is called spirit. The mind or controlling part of this essence is called soul. In other words, the mind or soul in the physical form that the essence of life takes in this material world becomes a three dimensional physical kind of mind, and when not in physical form - i.e., when in its elemental state, minds’ operation is of a fourth and higher dimensional kind - i.e., the kind possessed by life in its state or elemental oneness - i.e., the controlling element or mind of the one spent force, or of Creator, or God.
EDITOR’S NOTE - In the second installment of this lecture Mr. Blumenthal will take up a detailed explanation of the mind of the Creator and just how and why it differs from the human mind before birth and after death. Later he will delve into the history of the One Concept, and its pluralistic aspects in the earth-world.
EDUCATION
BY FRANKLIN BRADLEY
A. What is consists of (herewith). B. How to obtain it (later).
Theodore Roosevelt said that “the only thing out of which we can make a man - is a boy.” It is your task and mine to see that our boys, if possible, become educated men, and our girls educated women. This we will do both because of our interest in them, and because the future integrity of our nation requires it.
Education is a method of living - strengthened by experience
- broadened by learning - governed by independent and judicial thinking.
An educated man has learned what to prefer, because at least mentally he has lived in the presence of preferable things and has an intense appreciation for them.
Educated men and women have always quietly smiled in the face of bigotry and superstition. They have done more for freedom and truth than armies of crusaders.
Erasmus was a nearly perfect example of the educated man, and good examples are unfortunately rare.
There is no such thing as mass conscience, judgement, thinking, or education - it is all individual. And only you as an individual can educate yourself. That is why most schools have much teaching, some learning, and little education; because they deal in mass production only.
Students are of three kinds:
(1) Those in whom has been established a love for real education.
(2) Those who want specific knowledge to help them in a future vocation.
(3) Those who want to go through school.
We must not run our three classes of students all through in the same grist.
If it is worthwhile just to “go through school” - and in many cases I think it is - let us have schools that permit that - with just as much of better things thrown in as possible.
If it is worthwhile - and I think it is - just to give training to certain pupils in specialized lines, to help them through definite knowledge to a more efficient place as specialists, let us give them that and add all we can of work that will make them more truly educated.
But I make an especial plea for fostering schools that will permit genuine and deep-seated education - that method of living that is governed by independent and judicial thinking; a knowledge of the worth while and an ability to secure it; with a poise that comes only from self-mastery.
Some people are quite well educated who have never had much schooling. Some people with many degrees from institutions of learning are poorly educated.
If all the world understood what it means to be educated, and how impossible is real progress without education; if every school understood it so that its pupils could be assisted to the full in acquiring what they need and are capable of assimilating, most of our problems would vanish.
I could have been educated but for the teachers I have had. In spite of that I hope and expect to become educated if I live long enough, as I fully believe that one who loves education cannot be kept from it.
Unfortunately most of the important subjects, as well as the best methods of teaching them or bringing them home, are not found as frequently as we desire; although this world does not hold real teachers and schools and curricula.
Possibly outside of the study of history many of the following subjects are as valuable as or more valuable than, most of the subjects taught as such:
- How to live in our bodies. We can never have but one body. We must understand its functioning and how to make it a useful habitation for our minds and spirits. Very few people coordinate their bodies with their minds and spirits, and as a result lose most of the joy and success possible.
This is not alone a study in physiology, although that has a bearing. It is a study in doing those things, forming those physical habits that enable us to absorb helpful vibratory energy whether it be from fresh air, food, drink, or from visible or invisible radiations from the host of sources that fill our universe. It is the arrival at a state of physical strength and elasticity always under control and resulting in ability to receive or give. Together with a wholesome trained brain and spirit it completes the trinity essential to an educated individual.
Human relations. As my friend Dr. Hurt says, “When there are two of us talking together there are really six people present - you as you are, you as you think you are, you as I think you are; myself as I am, as you think I am, and as I think I am.” The confusion, the misunderstandings that can arise from this mixture of six personalities, is at the basis of most imperfect human relationships. The study that goes to the heart of things in our relations with each other is that study that will give us happiness in our association with our fellowmen. It will make them helpful to us and us to them.
Imaginative faculty based on laws of cause and effect. The thing which causes us to rise through successive stages from one plane of life to another is the ability to look ahead, see the possibilities, and make them become actual facts. It is the development of the imagination, not day dreaming, but a practical vision developed from within and contracting the things that are without. It is the essence of growth. The man who has it rides in the swiftest airplane. The man who has none of it is chained to a stake.
Logical thought and action. It is a rare and noteworthy individual that is capable of discussing at length any subject and sticking to the main issue throughout his discussion, beginning at the foundation, carrying out the argument with only illustrative side-lights, and pushing clear through to the final conclusion. When we listen to such a one we are profoundly impressed, first with the efficiency of the discourse, second with the feeling that if this hewing to a line could be put into our daily lives they would become vastly more successful. Most thought and performance are to a degree illogical, waste of time and constant error resulting. Logical thought and action are fundamental in an educated individual.
Play. Unfortunately when the word play is mentioned it is usually accompanied by the thought of children and their activities.
It is every bit as important that the spirit of play function through the entire life of any individual. Play is primarily a relaxation. It is a rest that comes from a change in type of activity. More than that it is a removal from the serious side of everyday activity. Its results are spontaneity; physical, spiritual and mental refreshment; longer life; a common cheerful ground on which we can approach our fellowmen; and a storehouse of energy to carry back to our work again. It is rest in motion.
- Love of beauty and the spiritual in life. Love of beauty does not alone mean a liking for a beautiful face, a graceful tree, or flowers, or skies, or birds. It means primarily an appreciation of the richness of all that the Creator has given us in our physical surroundings and secondly, in the things of our heart realms and of the spiritual world.
The attributes of veneration and respect and love are a result of appreciating beauties that may not be visible on the surface. The student of beauty finds beauty wherever he goes. The one who does not seek for beauty finds sordidness. A training in this field causes one to look for the finer things and enables him to find them, and the Creator himself is brought near and made very personal.
Sincerity. Our standing in the world depends upon how our neighbors look at us, which is a result of how we look at ourselves. We are the only ones who know whether we are always honest and honorable. If, knowing ourselves, we can gaze out of eyes squarely at every other man, knowing that we are doing what we can in the right direction, the thing our fellowmen will see will be absolute sincerity, and we will learn that through it is produced the confidence, the esteem, and the honor of our fellowmen.
Self-reliance. If most of the people who complained of being downtrodden and unfortunate in the affairs of the world would wear across their breasts a sign which read “I am a Leaner,” they would stating to the world the definite reason why they have not made more progress. A leaner has to be carried, a self-reliant man not only bears himself to great heights, but carries others with him.
Travel. Travel as a study is that great subject which gives us a knowledge of our fellowmen and the environments which help make them what they are. It is the comparative subject, and frequently we rise best by making comparisons. Comparing homes, comparing habits and customs, comparing individual characteristics, comparing the effects of geographic and geologic conditions, gives us a picture of the advantages or the handicaps of others, gives us an appreciation for what they have accomplished and the methods through which accomplishments have been made, and gives us ideas to use as stepping-stones for ourselves.
Sense of humor. Frequently the possession or lack of sense of humor is the difference between a happy and an unhappy life. It is the difference between a happy approach to others and an unhappy one. Its possession gives us a standing as companionable and social human beings. While it may be claimed that many of the above subjects, such as sense of humor, possession of imaginative faculty, etc., are rather born in a person than that they may learn and acquire these attributes, yet a vast amount of progress can be made through serious and comprehensive training.
Values. The study of values will result in our leaving out the insignificant and the trivial, and devoting our time to the important things. This study requires the analysis of every act of our waking existence and affects not only the things we think but the things we do. As a result of the study of values the accomplishment in life of any given individual can be multiplied many times.
Citizenship-service. No man has the right to live unto himself alone. We have a duty to our fellowmen and to our country. Only a small percentage of our men and women are actually good citizens, rendering adequate service. There can be no greater subject for concentrated study than this.
Diligence. The study of diligence may seem to be minor but it is not. A recent and a true statement has been made to the effect that given a man of good brain and diligence almost anything conceivable is possible in the way of accomplishment. It is the “wool-gatherer” who loses out in the race of accomplishment.
Mother Nature. The truly educated men of the world have without exception gone to Mother Nature for rest and refreshment and inspiration, and they have gone there because they have studied Mother Nature. Every one of the five senses can be attuned to the vibrations there recorded during a proper course of instruction in this out-of-doors subject, and the vision we see, the symphonies we hear, the odors of the forest that assail our nostrils, the taste of the herbs and the bark and the roots and the berries, and the feel of the fresh air and the water and earth itself, all work together for a background of living that is free from artificiality, that is sincere, that is happy and that knows the fountain of eternal youth.
With the mental development arrived at through thorough training as indicated the individual becomes dominated by his appreciations. He has become capable of differentiating between the helpful and harmful, between good and bad, between right and wrong, between worth while and not worth while. His appreciations make him live a contented life, whether he is alone or in company with others. He lives a life of completeness.
There is now established the Virginia Beach School for Boys. The director and the Advisory Board of that school believe in education as outlined above. The three R’s, etc., have their necessary and perfect place in the curriculum, but the thing sought for is a thorough grounding in appreciations - a complete education, that education (to make a re-statement) which results in a method of living governed by independent and judicial thinking, with knowledge of the worth while and ability to secure it, and a poise that comes only from self-mastery.
MECHANICS OF OPERATIVE FORCES AS APPLIED TO A PHYSICAL BODY
By THOMAS B. BROWN
In experimenting with mechanics - whether with the mechanics of the operative forces of a machine or the mechanics of the operative forces of a physical body - to insure the accomplishment of the best results it is necessary that we familiarize ourselves with the nature of all forces we are to use - how and why used - as well as to understand the machine on which operative forces are to be used.
In the event of experimenting with operative forces in a physical body three essentials should be understood - they are:
First: - We must understand that everything is a vibratory force and that a relationship exists between each and every force.
Second: - We must understand what the elements are that go to make up the so-called operative forces.
Third: - We must be familiar with all the different channels through which operative forces come into the physical body.
Through the expansion of knowledge, desired results may be achieved by the combination of selected forces. Knowing the resultant force desired as an effect the experimenter may obtain same by balancing the forces in combination put together as a cause. This is so whether forces used are in a physical body, a machine, a chemical combination, or a combination of any forces including universal forces.
At this time we will not take up any special form of experimentation that has been completed or is being undertaken, but rather generalize on the reasoning followed, by which results are being sought.
We will discuss the subjects in the order as above given. Considering that stated in number one, let us by deduction formulate a better understanding of vibratory forces.
We know that the universe was created by the First Creative Energy - a mental Creation of His Idea or Plan - and further that since the beginning there has been a balancing of the created forces. (If this were not so all would be chaos and there would be no Plan.)
No matter what processes ensued since creation, each and everything is but a differentiation of The First Creative Energy; therefore, everything is vibratory, and as the process may be considered the working of the Plan, it is mental. Consequently everything on this plane can be considered as the objectification of a subjective idea. All objects then are the fusion of different degrees of the several aspects of The First Creative Energy, and are vibratory forces.
By resolving things into forces one may more readily comprehend that with which we are dealing.
Keeping in mind then that all is vibratory, and that in the universe a relationship continuously exists between the forces by virtue of which the balance is ever maintained, and further considering all natural phenomena as an interplay of forces, there is seen that some law constantly keeps the forces or things in relativity of position and condition. Therefore it must follow that all natural phenomena is the manifestation of one element of this law. Let us call this law the Law of Relativity of Force.
We are able from the above deductions to postulate as follows:
In the beginning one sees The First Creative Energy, out of which Relativity of Force and Space is begun, and since continues to vibrate. Then, the one law remains. When it is in the same vibration it shows the same thing.
The combination of forces in any object is in a relativity to all other forces, and if due to any phenomena the forces in the object are changed, the resultant forces are in a relativity to all other forces.
On the objective plane that element of The Law of Relativity of Force that has undergone the most research and consequently is the best understood is that of Chemical Phenomena.
We know by experimentation that two parts of Hydrogen to one part of Oxygen in combination result in water. Under the same conditions, the same proportions of Hydrogen and Oxygen invariably given the same result.
Visualizing both Hydrogen and Oxygen as vibrations, in combination the resultant vibration is ever the same - Water. This is the manifestation of one element of the Law of Relativity of Force. When it is in the same vibration it shows the same thing.
Since the combination of like chemical forces always give the same result, the combination of any vibratory forces will always give the the same vibratory result. The result will be the manifestation of another element of the Law of Relativity of Force.
The second subject that we were to consider concerns the make-up of an operative force.
The elements in combination that go to make up any generated force may be an unknown vibration or not. We may have in any operative force that as is seen in varied elements that are as octaves of vibrations in music. There are forces or pitches above and below the scale as are applied in the human voice. There are colors - (vibrations), above and below the spectrum as applied by man in a nominal manner.
These are the same octaves of force seen or applied in the various elements as go to make up the forces as applicable to elements in any generated force. Therefore, in any generated force there may be elements that so far have not been separated and classified by man.
By referring to the table of vibrations issued by the Polytechnic School of Paris, one will note that between the lower sound vibrations and the higher mineral-ray vibrations, are many unclassified octaves of vibrations.
Let us turn now to the third subject that we were to consider - the Physical body, and through what channels the operative forces function.
The physical body to live needs constantly to be supplied by vibrations. We find that these vibrations are supplied to it through three channels.
1st. Vibrations from food received through the digestive tract.
2nd. Vibrations from the atmosphere received through the lungs.
3rd. Vibrations of vital force received into the body by absorption through the etheric part of the body.
The forces resultant from vibrations entering the three channels - by eating, breathing, and absorbing, manifest themselves in the physical body as harmony or discord; i.e., we are well or sick.
If resultant forces are discordant or unbalanced we attempt to balance the same and restore harmonious being. We do this by the addition, or rather the changing, of the vibrations as enter any or all the channels.
As far back in the ages as is recorded, man has attempted to restore harmony by the changing of vibrations in his physical body through the addition of medicinal vibrations, as taken into the digestive tract in the form of medicine. The other channels were to a great part overlooked as a medium through which corrective vibrations could be taken into the physical body.
Through experimentations made, and based on the understanding of vibratory laws, there has been developed several kinds of mechanical devices to supply selected curative vibrations direct to the physical body.
One device merely equalizes the forces generated in the body without adding thereto additional vibrations. Those others that have been developed add additional vibrations direct to the vibrating system in any physical body.
The latter named devices, in which the medicinal vibrations are added to those of the physical body, give in many cases more positive results than when vibrations from some medicine taken internally are secured for the body, and at the same time do not subject the physical body to the inconvenience, and, at times harm of assimilating the medicine in the digestive tract.
These several methods are at present being used at the Cayce Hospital, and the record of results obtained from the use thereof is very gratifying.
We will not at this time discuss the structure and details of these various mechanical and chemical developments, but I have outlined the functioning of the above apparatus so that it may be understood that in many cases vibrations may be added to the system direct, in lieu of receiving the same vibrations through the action in the digestive tract.
In addition to these corrective methods, medicinal vibrations or operative forces may be added to the system through either or both of the two other channels; namely, that of the breathing and that of the absorptive channel.
At this time experiments are being made where curative vibrations are sent into the body through these two channels. These experiments are being conducted under the direction of capable engineers who will in due course of time outline the experimentation, the development of apparatus, and the results accomplished through these columns.
Through the extension of thought to a higher dimensional understanding many curative devices will be developed and brought into usages for the benefit of mankind.
The perfecting of mechanical devices for equalizing and harmonizing the forces in the physical body is by no means the end.
Let us be ever mindful that mind is the builder and creator and that being so the mind can create any vibratory force that can be created mechanically; hence, man may mentally equalize forces or add outside vibrations to his body.
The accomplishment of this is merely a matter of mental development - another forward step in man’s evolutionary process.
IN MEMORIAM
THOMAS BURR HOUSE, M.D., D.O.
APRIL 3, 1867 - OCTOBER 12, 1929
Because there was no beginning there is no end, each birth and death is but a journey on the way to God. For some of us the way is devious and long, for many the road goes backward and forward. For each there is a time of blindness and one of understanding, an age of selfishness and an era of service. As the end is neared the goals of Beauty and Truth shine down on the weary traveller, and are reflected in the fineness of his life. He is old, and wise, and content. Of such in the Kingdom of God.
Service is the highest ideal of mankind, and Service is the characteristic by which we remember Dr. House. When he passed to a higher plane he completed a service which called for the sacrifice of a splendid life on the altar of Christ’s ideal. With untiring devotion he gave of himself that others might live and smile, and the courage of faith and love guided his willing hands to glorious success.
At the dawn of a dream he was called away, for although his greatest desire was about to be realized he had completed his work, and the life he gave that others might live was come to a fitting close.
He gave of himself in the ideal of Service, he has made a long journey on the way to God.
LIFE READINGS WHAT THEY ARE AND HOW TO USE THEM
In Dayton Ohio, in 1924 Mr. Edgar Cayce gave the first psychic reading later called a “Life Reading.” Since that time several hundred of this type have been given, and as more and more individuals find them interesting and beneficial the demand increases.
Your first question is naturally, “What is a Life Reading?” The answer is not as easy to express as it would at first appear to you who have had such a reading. It is a discussion of you, of your abilities and faults, of your likes and dislikes, of your peculiar characteristics that made you an individual. It is a picture of you from an angle that an Olympian God might use should he have reason to summarize the progress of your development and the point to which you had attained. It is a history of your existence, an explanation of why you are playing the part you now portray in this great little comedy we call “Modern Civilization.” But perhaps by letting you read the essence of a Life Reading you will be better able to grasp this explanation. The following is a condensed reading, selected at random. The notes in the margin will, I hope, aid you in understanding the contents.
You will have before you (full name), who was born (full date) in (number, street, city and country). You will give the relation of this entity and the Universe, and the Universal Forces, giving the conditions that are as personalities, latent and exhibited, in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth’s plane, giving time, place, and the name, and that in that life which built or retarded the development for the entity, giving the abilities of the present entity and that to which it may attain, and how. (This is the suggestion given to Mr. Cayce as he goes to sleep. This suggestion was given in a reading as being the best to obtain a life reading. Note that full name, place and date of birth are essential.)
Yes, we have the entity and those relations with the Universal Forces, as are latent and exhibited in the present earth’s plane. In the development of the entity we find many of the urges being exhibited in the present experience, and many of the abilities of the entity are shaping and taking on those elements that need direction, and with same there will be seen that much will come to this entity toward the ability of development in the present earth’s plane. Even though there may be presented obstacles, yet with that developed, and the abilities as have been attained, the entity may apply self in the way and manner as to bring to self much in the present experience. (Here Mr. Cayce begins. Notice that he follows the line of the suggestion. His reference to the period as critical in the present development of the individual is important and indicates the special value of the reading at this time. Encouragement.)
In entering the earth’s plane we find the entity comes under the influence of Jupiter, Venus, and of Uranus, with that of the mystic rather than of the Uranian dominating. Hence we find an exceptional individual in its individuality, though one oftentimes that is in the way of causing much misunderstanding in others, for the entity, with its inner urge, feels that others should understand the entity’s purpose when same is not even outwardly indicated. (The planets here mentioned might be briefly interpreted as follows: Jupiter - strength, ennobling ideals; Venus - love, beauty; Uranus - occult, extremes.)
In the urges, then, irrespective of the will’s force, we find: (These urges are resultant influences of the planets and have to do with the material and outward nature. Note the reference to will as supreme over these influences.)
One that is attractive to many.
One attracted in self to few. The entity, having many associates that are clever, and that think a great deal of the entity, yet the tendency is to make only a few close friends and many passing ones.
The inability of many to reach that inner shrine of the entity’s intent and purpose to make this entity above others, and as a leader, for many seek the entity in many ways and channels. (Tendencies like these can be easily checked and studied.)
One, that is quick of speech and action and slow in making changes or determining the real purport of self’s endeavors.
One inclined toward both music and art, and in either capable of making more than the average success…
(It was necessary to cut considerably in several places.)
…Let those in charge of the entity at this period then direct the entity toward the correct incentive for the development of the better forces in the entity. Let this not be turned toward lasciviousness or self-aggrandizement for selfish motives or purposes. (WARNING)
Appearances in the earth plane:
In the Ukrainian country. One of the peasant class. A leader who gave much to the peoples through the setting of the folklore to music. Name, Thiasoki. The entity gained through service to many, no thought was taken of self. The urge from this experience is the love for the simple things of life and the ability of the entity to make the most of any circumstances or conditions which presents itself. (The first appearance was in Russia. Consider the position at this time but note the development through service. These appearances are taken up in backward order as one would back down a ladder. This appearance was just previous to the present. Musical ability was here developed. It is an outstanding accomplishment in the present.)
In the one before this. During the rebuilding of the walls of the holy city. One who assisted in setting up the temple worship. The entity gained through service to many but lost through turning to over-lovings the flesh. Name, Abidiha. The urge from this is the ability to keep those who make love at a distance unless the entity desires to use such an individual. This may be used to excess. Beware of it. (Rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem on the return from captivity. Service is again the building force. Retarded some through domination of the fleshly desires. Danger as warned of in the present.)
In the one before this we find in the Egyptian country (11,000 B.C.) A brilliant musician to the king and in favor with many. The entity brought the first production of plays to this land. Name, Itica. The urge: the ability to act and sing and the ability to wind an individual about her finger. Gained through service in the first of these but lost through misuse of the latter ability. (This period in Egyptian history is unrecorded as yet. Another talent shown in the present and hard to explain in any other manner.)
In the correct application of self to those rules of that law as governs the application of the infinite with the finite, the entity will find that the principles apply in life as in death, and that with the making of self as but naught is to gain the highest esteem of those whom the entity would serve. (Consider this well for herein lies a universal truth.)
Then, in music or in acting, or in the combination of the two, may the entity attain to that as is best in this present experience, and in giving self in same keep ever before self those first principles as of duty to that Creative Energy, to whom the entity must account for those abilities given in the flesh; for to use same for self is to lend self to the weakness of the flesh. To use same in bringing the better understanding in the lives of others is as but applying the gifts in the service to the Creative Forces. Be guided, be directed, be kept, in that way that leadeth to more perfect understanding, and the more perfect conception of the right for Right’s sake, rather than as gaining in earthly conditions from same. (Definite suggestions for a career. Wisdom for us all. Notice deep religious note combined with modern scientific language.)
Perhaps from the above you will be able to get some idea of the composition of a Life Reading. Now the next question that arises is just wherein lies the value of this type. Do they have any practical value, any mental or spiritual value, or both?
The first idea that one should get in making this decision is that these readings are personal. They are studies of you as an individual. When you have finished reading your own
The Historical Committee of the Association wishes to announce the opening of a department in this magazine. This committee was created to delve into the historical data which we have on hand and furnish for the members a source of information concerning Life Readings. The members of this committee have for several years been making a study of this type of reading and have tried to prepare themselves to be of service to you. They do not claim to be able to answer all of your questions but they can assure you that they will put forward an honest effort to help you with any problem concerning your reading.
In opening this department it is the idea of the committee that there will arise from time to time questions that will be of general interest. They propose to answer such questions here. Moreover they believe that much of the data of a historical nature will be of general interest. This will be especially true of archaeological findings which will be used to establish the theory of reincarnation and push back the boundaries of man’s knowledge of history. From time to time ancient writings of members of the Association will be used as they are located. It is the hope of the committee that they will be able to publish in the next issue the writings of one Jane Dundee, a witch during the early settlement of Virginia, at present the wife of a well known Norfolk doctor.
We wish to serve you. Please use us. We are your committee. Signed: The Historical Committee
there can be no doubt in your mind that it is you they speak of. This gives you a certain realization that from somewhere has come information concerning you that even you could not have given on yourself. Think for a moment of the depth and breadth of this information and you will know that here is something that will help you understand yourself a little better. “Know thyself” was a maxim of the old Greek philosopher, Socrates. Today the man is wise who strives to follow his advice, for in so doing will come the only real contentment. Through these readings you can understand peculiarities of your nature that have previously puzzled you. In that you will find explanations for your present position in life, reasons for your likes and dislikes, and descriptions of urges, their origin and influence, that control the factors of heredity and environment which heretofore you have placed so much stress upon as the main springs of all your action and thought. Each time you go over one of these readings you will find a new suggestion that opens up for you a line of thought on some idea or action which you have wondered about. You have in a Life Reading the history of your existence unfolded before you. Who is the man who can say that such a history of himself would not be interesting? We are what we have made ourselves, and we will be that which we will.
Now let us turn to the practical side of these readings. If you were in the place of this young woman would there not be stirred in you some spark of desire to know more of the history of the period in which you lived? Would there not arise the desire to know more of each of the appearances which seem to have so influenced your present life? Could you carelessly cast aside the idea that creeps into the minds of us all that the stars shine with a peculiar significance for us at times. Many have been the theories concerning astrology in every age. Who can say that there is not SOME truth in a belief that has stood the test of centuries? In every Life Reading there are many threads that lead off into borderlands of man’s knowledge. Let him who is not afraid follow them.
Each individual must make use of his reading according to his own needs. The following are only some general suggestions that I have found helpful in studying Life Readings:
Go over a reading at intervals, thinking about it between times, until you are sure that you get the full significance of every sentence. You will find that the reading seems to grow with your understanding. You can turn to it for an explanation of each new question about yourself. These questions will arise as you commence to study.
Make a point of learning all you can about each period in which you lived. This will enable you to recognize the urges from each of these.
Learn through the Life Readings of your family and close friends, just what their connections has been with you previously. Study the present relationship as related to the past. This can become a fascinating and worth-while study.
(Through letters make use of the Historical Committee of the Association. They will be glad to help you with any questions arising from your readings).
A Life Reading offers one mental, physical and spiritual food. Let us eat of it, for it is the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. With diligent application of the truths we find there will come understanding. With understanding there will come contentment in our hearts and peace with our fellow man.
NEWS and VIEWS of The Cayce Hospital and the Association of National Investigators, Inc.
The Cayce Hospital was dedicated on November 11, 1928. It was officially opened on February 11, 1929. Thus far sixty patients have been treated, with invariably pleasing results. There has been an average of ten patients for the last two months, and at the present time that number is being treated in the hospital.
Improvements have been steadily made, and more are under construction. A tennis court, Shuffle Board and Croquet ground were finished during the summer for the visitors’ recreation, Bath houses, a Diet kitchen and Maintenance Office were erected, and a service car for patients was purchased. A club house for visitors and trustees is soon to be erected, as is a home for nurses and Association employees. The City water line has just been completed, and the re-surfacing of the grounds is under way. A touch of human interest occurred recently when a convalesced patient left the hospital, feeling quite well and carrying a bouquet of violets gathered from the flower bed at the side of the yard. The office of the M.D. has recently been refinished with new furniture and fixtures and additional equipment. The front porch has been glassed in, adding a great deal to the comfort and pleasure of the patients. A new Burdick Light Bath Cabinet has been installed, proving a benefit to all who require such treatments, and the application of the battery vibrator being developed in the research laboratory is showing remarkable results, being quite satisfactory to the physicians in charge.
Approximately three thousand visitors have been to the hospital since its opening. Every one of these has been tremendously impressed, and a large number have later applied for more data and also for membership. Among the visitors during the summer months was Mr. Chester A.
Robinson, Professor of Expert Accounting in the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance in Boston. Mr. Robinson was greatly interested in the work and had a life reading for himself before returning to Boston to resume his duties. The Reverend Robert B. H. Bell, M.A., author and lecturer of Denver, Colorado, visited the hospital on November 15. He presented Mr. Cayce with an autographed copy of his latest book, “The Challenge,” which is an interpretation of the mind of the Master, and a translation of the Sermon on the Mount from the original Greek.
Crowds have been gathering at the lecture room each Sunday afternoon to enjoy the addresses given by Mr. Cayce and President Blumenthal. Enthusiasm is rife, and on most occasions there are outbursts after the lectures from individuals who feel they must get up and “express” themselves. These lectures began with the opening of the hospital, and are held each Sunday afternoon in the hospital’s lecture room. On alternate Sundays Mr. Cayce and President Blumenthal talk, the former on his experiences and interpretations of the Bible, the latter on philosophy. Creative Evolution, The Value of Introspection, My Idea of God, and The Fourth Dimensional Viewpoint are some of the absorbing things discussed by President Blumenthal, who also conducts a philosophy class on alternate Saturday afternoons. This class has attracted considerable interest and is being well attended. The first meeting was held on August 24, and the large attendance showed the interest previously aroused in philosophy by President Blumenthal in his Sunday lectures. The textbook being used is Ouspensky’s “Tertium Organum.” Later Hudson’s “Law of Psychic Phenomena,” and Bergson’s “Creative Evolution” will be taken up, with outside readings in James’ “Varieties of Religious Experiences” and “Pluralistic Universe,” and Bergson’s “Mind Energy.”
Considerable interest is being shown in the educational end of the work, and a quantity of new books received by the library is being much used. A meeting of the Educational Committee has been called by the department heads for early in December, and reports will then be made by associates and members both here and abroad. A gift of a set of stereoscopic views of Egypt and Palestine has been made to the Research Department, and the Archaeological Committee is preparing minute data on all historical questions relating to that portion of the world.
The education work in general is progressing at a great rate, and although few concrete evidences of these are now visible a strong foundation is being laid for future work.
A very interesting phase of the work was begun during the past summer by the Historical Committee, composed of Miss Gladys Davis, Hugh Lynn Cayce, and Thomas J. Sugrue.
From the life readings of the members of the Association the committee worked out the relations of various members to the other members, interpreted the individual’s own life reading, and connected his urges and abilities with those of the people with whom he contacts. The work was done for the members of the Board of Trustees and the officers of the Association, and was given a vote of thanks at the meeting of the Trustees.
When interviewed on the subject the members of the committee said they hoped in the future to be able to do this for each member having a life reading. A great deal of study and research is necessary in the preparation of such a document, and at the present facilities are not situated for rapid execution. However, the committee stated, they will be glad to give any member his connections if he will send a written request, including in this the names of the individuals with whom his is acquainted and concerned.
An insight into the far-reaching plans of the Association can be gleaned from the work of Datastician Linden Shroyer.
Mr. Shroyer handles the files of the readings, and separates the information in each reading into its various phases. From all the physical readings he obtains the diagnoses and remedies prescribed, arranging these so they may be studied by a committee of medical research. The object of this research will be to apply what is given to an individual to people having the same conditions. Many new cures will be discovered, and more efficient methods of treatment will be a natural outcome of this work.
From other readings the information is segregated into various departments; philosophical, historical, scientific and material. Files for Relativity of Force, Astrology, Creative, Evolution, Introspective Experience, etc., are included in this group.
Mr. Shroyer states that his work will be finished when future generations have the information of the readings complete, in a manner most efficient for study and reference.
The regular quarterly meeting of the trustees of the Association was held November 9. Mr. Franklin Bradley of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Morton H. Blumenthal and Mr. David E. Kahn of New York, Mr. Thomas B. Brown of Dayton and Mr. Hugh Lynn Cayce of Lexington, Va., were the out of town trustees present.
The regular annual meeting of the Association of National Investigators, Inc., was held in the office of the corporation on the 27th day of July, 1929, at three o’clock p.m. Eastern Standard time.
Present at the meeting were, President Morton H. Blumenthal, Vice-Presidents Thomas B. Brown, David E. Kahn, Edwin D. Blumenthal, Hugh Lynn Cayce and F. A. Van Patten, Secretary and Treasurer Edgar Cayce, Assistant Secretary Gladys Davis, Trustees Franklin F. Bailey, Gertrude Evans Cayce, Adeline Levy Blumenthal, and Lucille Kahn. The only trustee absent was Vice-President M. B. Wyrick, who returned his proxy.
President Morton H. Blumenthal opened the meeting by reading two papers, prepared by himself and Vice-Presidents Edwin D. Blumenthal and Thomas B. Brown, outlining two concepts of the purpose and ideal of the Association. Vice-President David E. Kahn suggested these be referred to the Educational Committee for consideration for editing and publishing. President Blumenthal offered a prayer, after which the meeting was turned over to the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The chairmans requested a report from the Board of Governors.
Chairman David E. Kahn read this report, which was accepted with a single correction.
Among the interesting events of this report was the appointment of Mrs. Edgar Cayce to the position of Director of Readings. Details of the system of filing readings, obtaining information from such, etc., were taken up also. Conditions in the hospital were discussed and many improvements were voted on, including considerable expansion and additions to the force.
Regarding publicity it was decided to have the Educational Committee take this work as one if its functions, appointing Thomas J. Sugrue as editor of such publicity for the period of one year.
Vice-President Hugh Lynn Cayce, chairman of the Historical Committee, delivered an excellent report on the work done in this field. A vote of thanks, suggested by Vice-President David E. Kahn and seconded by President Blumenthal, was given to the Historical committee for their excellent work.
The meeting lasted until after five p.m., many interesting developments coming up for discussion. Plans for the future were made in detail, and in view of the success of the past year the members felt greatly encouraged.
On the night of July 27th President Morton H. Blumenthal was host to the officers and trustees of the Association at a banquet in the Cavalier Hotel.
The affair marked the close of another successful year for the Association, and the beginning of another twelve months of even brighter prospects.
Those present included Mr. and Mrs. Morton H. Blumenthal, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Cayce and Hugh Lynn Cayce, Mr. and Mrs. David E. Kahn, Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Van Patten, Mrs. Thomas B. House, Miss Gladys Davis, Edwin D. Blumenthal, Walker E. Land, Thomas B. Brown, and Thomas J. Sugrue.
The appointments made for physical readings by Mr. Cayce run up to the latter part of March, and there is an increasing number of requests coming in every day from far and near. The total number of readings to date exceeds eleven thousand, of which about two hundred are life readings and the rest physical.
Secretary Edgar Cayce spent a week in New York during November, where he conferred with officers and committees of the Association regarding their work.
Secretary and Mrs. Cayce gave a birthday party of the Secretary’s sister, Miss Annie Cayce, at their home on 35th Street, Wednesday Evening, November 20.
Dr. Berger spent a week in Washington during November, and Dr. Hansen, one of the assistant physicians, spent a few days in Pittsburgh during that month.
The officers and trustees are frequent visitors to the hospital, and a large number of them spent Thanksgiving there.
There is the possibility that the War Department will grant the use of their land along the coast in front of the hospital. This will make it possible for the Association to improve and beautify the spot and greatly enhance the patient’s opportunities for recreation.
The files of the Association of National Investigators, Inc., offer some interesting reactions to the readings given by Mr. Edgar Cayce. Below are a few of the more recent letters, demonstrating the accuracy of the diagnoses.
“As far as I know the reading fits my case and is right in line with my trouble. I expect to carry out the suggestions made in the reading.”
“You have described my case exactly, and I will carry out your suggestions.”
“We feel that your reading is correct, and intend to carry it out to the limit, especially as we have no other course to follow. The doctor claims this will be a new discovery in medical science if our baby can be cured, as it is a rare case. Was told not to have another baby, as it might be the same. What would you advise?”
“Reading received this day. It is very WONDERFUL as describing conditions which exist. Am ready and anxious to follow the suggested treatment as soon as I can find a convenient practitioner of osteopathy, there being none in our city to my knowledge. Am very sure of good results when I get the treatments under way.”
“Just exactly as we see it, and are following directions precisely, with visible results already.”
“The reading seems to fit my case and also coincide with the diagnoses of different doctors, but especially an osteopath. I will carry out your suggestions to the best of my ability.”
“For the above, who is my mother, I will say that I believe the reading fits her condition very well. She is following instructions given and is showing marked improvement.”
“Think the reading fits my condition. Expect to follow treatment as soon as I can get the medicine.”
And here is one bringing memories of the long ago.
“Following your reading of some twenty years ago for a relation of mine, Mr. […] of …, I am thoroughly convinced of the correctness of the diagnosis. So far as I can know by observing a post mortem examination, Mr. […]‘s condition at the time of your reading was past relief. I have told of your wonderful reading in that case many times.”
Each day brings new letters of enthusiasm, thanks, hope, and conviction. The argument is unanswerable, the evidence is too great for disbelief.
The Association suffered an irretrievable loss in the death of Dr. Thomas B. House, Chief of Staff of the Cayce Hospital, who passed away in Dayton, Ohio, October 12, 1929. Not only was Dr. House a great physician, he was a master of the art of human nature, capable of understanding and curing those ills not listed in the medical books. He had been associated for many years with the work of Mr. Cayce, and thoroughly understood the administering of the physical readings. He was taken away when his greatest and most loved work was just begun; yet in the little time he was permitted to administer his duties in the Cayce Hospital he performed his work in such a way as to register a lasting memory of efficiency and understanding which endeared him to the hearts of all he encountered. The memory of Dr. House will ever be an inspiration and guide to the servants of God and Mankind who follow in his self-sacrificing footsteps.
Dr. House was born in Orlanda, Tennessee, on April 3, 1867.
He received his M.D. from the state university and later received a degree of Doctor of Osteopathy. He spent the greater part of his professional life in Kentucky, and for many years was Medical Head of the Western State Hospital there. He was noted as a conscientious and talented practitioner, as well as a doctor remarkable for his sympathy and understanding of human nature. He assumed control of the Cayce Hospital at its opening last February, and served in the capacity of Chief of Staff until forced to leave by illness in September. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Carrie Salter House, his son, Thomas Burr House, Jr., and two sisters.
THE LETTER-BOX
In opening this department we wish to extend a hearty invitation to every member of the Association, and those outside its ranks, to here meet and discuss anything you may desire. This is to be the open forum of thought, and we wish everyone to freely express his doubts, desires, fears, objections, questions, etc. For those who ask questions of interest to everyone an answer will be printed. To start the department off in this first issue I have two friendly letters from two Vice-Presidents of the Association, Mr. David E. Kahn, and Mr. Edwin Blumenthal, both of New York City. We wish to publicly thank both these gentlemen for their kind wishes and offers of co-operation.

Mr. Thomas J. Sugrue, c/o Washington & Lee University, Lexington, Va.
Dear Tom:
Surely it is in proper order to congratulate you on your appointment as editor of “The New To-morrow,” and I trust you will accept my good wishes even thogh they come at this late date. It is inevitable that this publication will be a revelation of education desired by many, condemned by a few, but appreciated and sought for by millions, even beyond your fondest hope.
From his inception, man has ever endeavored to understand life from the inside out, rather than merely the exterior material. Man’s true and finer relationship with each other have been sought for, with greater or less success, since earth’s beginning. Life has been paraphrased with the beautiful motto of the Golden Rule. In the final analysis does not this rule demonstrate the application of the oneness of everything? We originate from one, remain a part of the one always, and continue as one forever, thus the reason for treatment to each other as one; and if through this publication we can gather some understanding of the finer purports of life on earth, the efforts of its contributors will reach a mile-stone in education.
This, however, is wandering from the reason of this letter, which straying I hope will not be amiss. I have been informed the paper is to have a “letter-box” department, and it is about this I wish to write.
Experience has demonstrated that letter writing is frequently a means of revealing one’s deeper, finer, and truer self. Where other means fail, a letter may give expression of one’s thoughts, and enable one to bare the most sacred feeling in a manner otherwise inadequate. Is it not possible this is the meaning of, “The Pen is Mightier than the Sword?” If the “letter-box” is used as a constructive means of giving to all those thoughts of sincere expression from one person to another, so often lost because of inability of presenting them in manuscript form, it will, without fail, serve a noble purpose.
May the efforts of this publication in education and development of the human race be met with its much deserved success.
As ever, Edwin D. Blumenthal
New York City,
To the Management of “The New To-morrow”:
Congratulations upon your first issue and best wishes for the success of the work which I believe will bring enlightenment and culture, mental and physical aid to many people in the world.
In the seventeen years I have known Mr. Cayce and his work, it has been of untiring and unselfish efforts spent for the aid of this fellow men. There are thousands of cases which I can relate where people have been helped and shown a new light for the benefit of themselves and family.
Hundred of cases which I have personally been interested in have been diagnosed by Mr. Cayce without his having known them or having ever seen them, and their complete cure and restoration to health and happiness has been the answer.
I hope in the near future to quote to you and your readers, specific cases. In your next issue, I hope to be able to report one of the most interesting and fascinating experiences I have ever had in my life and one that will bring new courage to thousands of other people. I am sure that everyone who becomes interested in this marvelous work for humanity will be repaid personally a thousand fold within their own lives and homes.
Sincerely, David E. Kahn
THE REINCARNATIONIST
I care not for the Lord of mind and heart, My God is built of things within my soul; A thing of all, yet of myself a part, And taking form as I march to my goal.
From life to lifeless life and back again, I climb and build to God by birth and death; My wisdom growing with each hour of pain, My God with Love and Time’s external breath.
There is no way except to build and be, To look within to find the building stone: I am of all, and all is part of me, And I in God the All that shall atone.

Mr. Hugh Lynn Cayce, Cayce Institute, Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Hugh Lynn:
Years ago Edgar occasionally recommended a sort of vibratory equalizer and I made them up when ordered.
This device consisted of two one-half inch pieces of steel about 6 inches in length separated by a strip of Carbon and with strips of carbon insulation on the outside. A wire was attached to one end of each piece of steel with a fitting to other end of wires which in turn could be clamped to an ankle and the opposite wrist.
Edgar was here about twenty two [six] years ago. He telephoned me and we had a nice visit at the Biltmore Hotel. Edgar stated that there was a company making all the various things recommended in the readings.
Have an idea and would like to try out one of these equalizers. If they are being made would like to get one.
At the time Edgar was here a mother brought her daughter into see Edgar who introduced me to them. The daughter was an attractive young lady of about twenty years. She had recently been cured of a very bad case of arthritis. I recently met the same girl and her mother. Their name […] - [See [951]].
Let me know about the device and with my kindest regards to you and Miss Gladys,
Very truly yours, [signed] Thomas B. Brown [TB/g]

Mr. Thomas B. Brown Sidney Eisenberger Realty Co. 729 Grand Avenue Dayton 6, Ohio
Dear Tim:
It was a pleasant surprise to have your letter of March 6, and learn that you remember the radio-active appliance.
You will be interested to know that just recently we have had some excellent reports on the use of the appliance from M.D.’s who have been trying them in the Pittsburgh area for nervous problems of various kinds. The appliances were originally recommended in a great many readings for insomnia, nervousness, glandular condition, etc.
You have a very good memory about the devise. At the present time it is not being made up for sale. We do have a man locally [A. M. Godfrey] who has put a few together for the use of doctors and other people who were experimenting with them. I am sure I can get him to make up one for you. It’s a hand-manufactured item and he has had considerable difficulty from time to time getting the kinds of steel with the right percentage of carbon and so forth which is used. He’s been charging $18.50, I think, for the appliance, which includes his labor on them. I’ll ask him to make one up for you as soon as possible. [GD’s note: Sent 3/16/61.]
Tim, I do wish that you could pay us a visit here. We are back in the old hospital building, as you know I’m sure. We are using it now as headquarters for the work of preserving, cross-indexing, and extracting from the readings, as well as for our Association activities connected with lectures, conferences, publications, etc. In a small way we have begun to accomplish some of the things we dreamed about many years ago, and I would certainly like to talk with you about many of them.
Gladys is happily married. Just recently her husband, Albert Turner, had a slight stroke but he is now improving. She will, I know, be glad to see your letter. She sends her regards.
I leave on March 13 for a lecture trip to the West Coast.
Further correspondence about the plans should be addressed to Gladys.
Sincerely, [signed] Hugh Lynn Cayce [HLC:dp-d]

Background
Background
B1. 3/2/26 Mr. [195] obtained 1800-14 on the Radio-Active Appliance which he was manufacturing for use according to the Edgar Cayce readings.
B2. 3/8/26 He [195] obtained dream interpretation rdg. 195-23 encouraging him in the mfg. of the Radio-Active Appliances for the benefit of many.
B3. 10/13/26 He [195] wrote: “Have been studying over the reports on the Radio-Active Applicator and especially as to the solutions prescribed in your rdgs., with the result that there is more or less ambiguity at present which I would like to clear up. To make myself clear - the rdgs. (the ones that prescribe metals, etc., in connection with Radio-Active Applicator) merely say ‘with that of Iron’ or Iodine, or Silver Nitrate or lead Chloride. Others say a 10% solution of Silver, or Iron, etc. Others say take 1 grain of Silver Nitrate or Gold Chloride and dissolve in one ounce of water. You will recall that rdg. 4483-1 prescribed 1 grain Silver Nitrate dissolved in 1 ounce of Alcohol. (Silver Nitrate is not soluble in alcohol.) I would at your early convenience like to clear up this, as much correspondence is received from those who you recommend solutions to which could be avoided if proper steps were made now. I would like to make the following questions: What percentage of the solutions should be used generally, - that is, unless other percentage is specifically prescribed in individual readings?
“Tincture of Irion [Iron] - what percent, how made? “Tincture of Iodine - what percent, how made % alcohol, grains iodine? “Gold Chloride - what percent water to 1 grain Gold Chloride? “Nitrate of Silver - what percent water to 1 grain Silver Nitrate? “Spirits of Camphor - what percent?
“In rdg. 4483-1 it was directed that percentage of Silver Nitrate would be 1 grain to 1 ounce of alcohol. Silver Nitrate does not appear to dissolve in alcohol. How can this be accomplished?
“In Gold Chloride solution is a 10% solution stronger than that solution in which 1 grain of Gold Chloride is dissolved in one ounce of distilled water?
“A 10% solution of Silver Nitrate seems to at first form crystals on lead anode and make a deposit at bottom of glass jar. Does this mean that 10% solution of Silver Nitrate is too strong, and does this partial crystallization impair the strength of the solution such that the vibrations are not of sufficient strength for their healing properties? or could this crystallization happen on account of the solution being of water instead of alcohol?
“Is a 10% solution of Tincture of Iron too strong?
“Are there any other solutions not enumerated above that could be used in connection with the Radio-Active Applicator that would be beneficial to mankind in curing any common ills? If so, what solutions? ‘What would each cure?’”
