This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 30th day of January, 1939, in accordance with request made by the mother - Mrs. […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mrs. R. F. Cooney.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:00 to 11:10 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Alabama.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions which have been submitted, as I ask them.
-
EC: Yes.
-
Now as we find, the conditions are rather out of the ordinary. And there has been and was a great deal of neglect accorded this body during the periods of birth, presentation and during its formative year of development.
-
These as we find are of such natures that material help and aid may come to the body. As to whether it will be entirely relieved and be able to use the lower limbs perfectly normally or not, or even the upper limbs nominally, will depend upon the response the body makes; as well as to how consistently and thoroughly the applications for improvement may be made.
-
These are the conditions as we find them.
-
In the presenting, or in the delivery, there was an injury primarily to the lower lumbar and sacral areas.
-
While this has prevented a normal development, naturally being to the nerve forces of the sensory or sympathetic system it has kept all the coordination between cerebrospinal and sympathetic from nominal development of the muscular and locomotory activity; through not an atrophy but an impaired development of the nerve tensions and the nerve connections through the ganglia in those areas as indicated.
-
These then as we find cause the weakened condition, the inclination for the body to easily become acid through its activities; and weakening the ability for resistance, or lacking in same, we find the general weakness occurs.
-
As we find, those administrations which have been made neuropathically are most excellent; but we would add this as the rub externally, - an equal combination of Peanut Oil and Olive Oil. The occasional use of the Cod Liver Oil is very well, but this taken internally will be found much preferable for the body, especially in the form of Cod Liver Oil and iron and the vitamins - as may be found in that called Codiron; this taken about one pellet twice each day, with the meal.
-
Also we would use the low electrical forces as from the very low form of electricity but in the high vibratory force, as found in the Violet Ray (hand machine, bulb applicator). This would be applied direct to the body, not too much at a time, and especially along the cerebrospinal system, and particularly in the area of the muscular force and the nerve tensions for arms and limbs, or the upper dorsal and cervical and the lumbar and the sacral and down the lower limbs. This will aid in their development, and as it were the “taking” of the activity of the manipulations, as well as absorptions through the oil rubs.
-
When this is first begun (the Violet Ray), do not give this more than a minute - over the whole body.
-
These should be kept almost every day; that is, the massage as well as the Violet Ray.
-
Keep these up, and the diets for body building.
-
Do this for sixty days, and then we would give further instructions.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Will he ever be able to talk plain? (A) As indicated, this depends upon the ability to make for the coordination between the sympathetic and the cerebrospinal system, or the sensory forces and the cerebrospinal.
He should improve in all directions.
Do this for sixty days, and then we will give further instructions.
- We are through with this Reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 2/1/39 EC’s letter to mother of [1805]:
“Hope you find the suggestions most encouraging and that they help Mother Cooney in making the corrections necessary for fast improvement. You are most fortunate in having such a Godly person interested in your boy. Mother Cooney is just fine - am sure she is one of God’s Anointed. Trust we may be of help in this matter and ask her for me, please, to write me just what she finds and if there are any questions to please pass them along - for am most anxious to see this boy get good and well if it be God’s plan for him.
“Thanking you and hoping to have been and to be of a real service…”
R2. 4/3/39 Mrs. Cooney’s letter to EC:
“The little boy [1805] Boonie as he calls himself, is not doing so good. They got the violet ray. They have followed suggestion in full, all but the druggist has never got the Codiron. Poor little fellow has had flu twice and is so nervous and just stays tied in a knot; so tense, it is just too bad he can’t ‘pass on.’ But until he suffers through this body to repay his mistakes in other bodies, he can’t go ‘on’, the ‘endless chain’ (almost) of life and death.”

B1. 9/13/38 Letter from Lucy A. Cooney, N.D. [neuropathic physician] to EC: ”…The other is a boy hurt when born (I think). But the mother will get it [reading] as soon as she can raise the money. I have had her write a history of his short life of four years; can’t talk, nor walk, nor help himself at all. But they will get the money some time, meantime I am GIVING him treatments free…”
B2. 10/29/38 Letter from Lucy A. Cooney, N.D. to EC: ”…The baby boy [1805] of four is improving very slowly - can bear his weight for a few minutes on his feet, but I do so want you to tell me what to do. But want his mother to get the money… The boy lacks something in his body or has a pinched nerve or nerves that I just can’t reach. He is so bright, a fine brain…”
B3. 1/16/39 Letter from Lucy A. Cooney, N.D. to EC: “Mrs. [mother of [1805]] is sending $20 for the reading. She has worked and saved for months to get money but it is the only way to know just what is the matter with him and how to correct it. Although after 80 treatments by me he has really improved a lot, can bear his weight on his feet by someone to lean against. Can grasp things, is very bright, so cute and loveable - what a miracle it will be if we can get him near normal.”
1/16/39 Mother’s questions:
What part of body was injured at birth? Will the body ever be able to walk? Will he be able to use his hands normally? Will he ever talk plain? Will he live to be an adult?
“He is four years old now. His head and breast are normal size but his hips and legs are not. He is of normal size in length but his hips are not as large as a year old should be. He hasn’t any crooked bones and his mind is perfectly good. He can say most anything he wants to, but can’t speak his words very plainly. He has never had a spell of any kind and is not often sick except he contracts colds easily in wintertime. His memory is very good and he eats as hearty as a normal child.
“Mother Cooney started treating him in August, giving him manipulations and rubbing him in Cod Liver Oil. He has improved lots.
“My physician was Dr. J. Y. Hamil. It was a premature birth. The baby tried to come into the world side-ways. Its arm was out so the doctor put it back and turned the baby around and started it out right. After its head was born my pains stopped and the doctor had to give me two more shots so I could deliver the rest of the baby. Then the doctor had to slap him two or three times to make him breathe. He was what is called a blue baby [cyanosis, congenital]. He didn’t weigh over three pounds and was so weak and tiny that we had to feed him with a medicine dropper for over two weeks. He was a breast-fed baby. After he got strong enough to nurse he began to get fat and healthy. He was never sick although he cried lots at night.”
“When he was about seven months old I began to notice he wasn’t normal. He couldn’t hold up his head, sit up or hold things with his hands. At first I thought he was backward because he had been a premature baby. So when he was about eight months old I carried him to Dr. Hamil. He examined him good and said he needed calcium in his bones. He prescribed for some medicine and I gave it to the baby a good while but it didn’t seem to do any good. About this time the baby had cut some of his teeth and they were soft and crumbly.
“I then took him to a baby specialist in Paducah, Kentucky. He said he didn’t think the baby would ever be any better.
“Then I took him to Dr. Sherrill of Birmingham, Alabama. He said it was the baby’s nerves. So I had the doctor here give him a nerve medicine, but after taking it he didn’t get any better.
“So I took him to Dr. Baugh here and he said the baby was growing too fast. He prescribed for some thyroid gland pills to give him, I did and the baby lost in weight so that he was nothing but skin and bones. He has never gained his weight back.
“I tried to get him in the Crippled Children’s Clinic in Birmingham but they wouldn’t take him so I carried him to Memphis, Tennessee to Dr. Campbell’s clinic. Dr. Speeds saw him there and said he had Spastic Paralysis [cerebral palsy], that he might outgrow it and might not. So I brought him home and started giving him exercises and hoping and praying he would outgrow it.
“We would like this reading as soon as you can possibly get to it. Please let me know at what time and day you can give his reading, so I can have him at home and you can be sure to reach him. We live at … Street, Decatur, Alabama.
“When he tries to grasp anything or stand up one leg draws up to his body and one hand goes up in the air. The other leg and arm on the other side will go down.
“No one understands him when he talks but myself, and lots of times I can’t. When he has a cold or the least bit ill his head draws back and his body becomes stiff and tense.
“Please be frank with me. I want to know the bad as well as the good.
“I am a poor hard working mother but I intend to put everything I have and all my time for the welfare of my baby. I really believe that you can help us as Mrs. Cooney has highly recommended you. I thank God for you and the betterment of your work for humanity…
“P.S. Enclosed is a money order for $2O.OO (twenty dollars).”
B4. 1/19/39 EC’s letter to Mother of [1805]:
“Have yours of the 16th - also note from Mother Cooney. The first open period is Monday morning, the 30th of January, 10:30 to 11:30 E.S.T. That is 9:30 to 10:30 your time. I regret the delay but we have been and are quite busy, and as we can only give two periods each day, are limited to how many we can even try and help.”
“I feel from your letter there is a great deal of hope for [1805] and trust and pray we may be the means or channel of help for him. My prayer from the first has been that I might be able to help children and some marvelous helps have come for them through the years. I have a great deal of love, faith and confidence in Mother Cooney and think you are quite fortunate to have her help.
“Please fill out the enclosed formal application for membership and return. Give the exact address [1805] will be at the hour set for his reading.
“Sincerely hoping in HIS name to be of a service…”
