This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 17th day of March, 1939, in accordance with request made by the father - Mr. [1965], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mr. [257].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading In his father’s 3:55 to 4:10 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. office, cor. bldg.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; giving a physical and mental reading, telling us how to correct the condition of his right eye, and advise as to his mental development. You will answer the questions which may be asked, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes.
-
Now, as we find, there are general physical conditions that need correction; and there are specific disturbances that make for hindrances in physical reactions towards normalcy.
-
These have to do with first the general eliminations as related to the abilities of the body for assimilation, and then for the specific conditions from an injury and also from a condition in the eyesight.
-
As we find, these suggestions followed carefully, as we give same, may bring a great deal of help toward correcting the conditions which exist; and aid in making a great deal more normal sight in the right eye, - if not at least sixty to eighty percent better sight in same.
-
These are conditions as we find them with this body:
-
In the blood supply, as indicated, there needs to be a better activity through the assimilating and eliminating forces of the body. While these are a contributory cause, they are rather the hindrance to better corrections rather than CAUSES of the disturbance of the specific nature indicated. However, with the corrections of the general disturbance through the blood supply, the nerve energies, the building of more resistance in the body, these all will make for then general conditions towards CORRECTIVE forces, - and, as the specific applications are made, will bring about the better influences or forces for the body.
-
As to the mental attitudes of the body, - of course, much will depend upon the sincerity, the consistency, and the faithful activity with which those things suggested are followed.
-
And because there is not the IMMEDIATE recuperative forces, the body must not become disturbed but be in a prayerful, meditative attitude consistent with the applications; and we will find a great deal of help for the body.
-
First, then, we would begin with these:
-
Begin with the general osteopathic manipulations and adjustments for the setting up of better drainages and better eliminations through the general functionings of the system; these with special reference being given to drainages being set up in the upper dorsal and through the cervical area, and especially in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd dorsal and the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th cervical, see? with a GENERAL treatment from those areas to the end of the spine.
-
These should be given twice or three times a week, for a series of at least sixteen such general treatments.
-
In the same periods begin with the use of Codiron as a tonic for toning better building forces within the system itself. Take three tablets each day, one with the morning meal, two with the evening meal. Keep these throughout the period of the other treatments.
-
Also throughout the entire course of treatments we would use the Radio-Active Appliance AS an equalizer for the general nerve forces of the body. Use this for thirty minutes each evening before retiring. And let such periods be used as the periods for meditation, for constructive thinking, for those creative forces of balance throughout the body; and not for self alone but that the abilities of self may be used in a constructive way and manner for others also.
-
After the sixteen such adjustments or treatments are taken, then leave these off for the time being and begin with the application of a low voltage of the electrical forces directly to the lens of the eye itself; such as Erlanger or the like, see? These are to be taken about twice a week for a period of about ten to fifteen treatments.
-
Then leave these off and begin again with the osteopathic treatments or adjustments; taking THEN about six to ten such treatments, see?
-
Then have the second series of the electrical treatments.
-
Keep up the Codiron and the Radio-Active Appliance throughout these periods, you see.
-
In the matter of the diet, - keep away from fried foods.
-
Do not eat raw apples, but cooked apples may be used in the diet. Most of the other fruits may be taken.
-
Especially have a great deal of vegetables cooked AND raw. As to meats, - only fish, fowl or lamb.
-
These, as we find, - with the general abstaining from fried foods or white breads or white potatoes and macaroni or the like, - will make for better conditions through this system.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What is the condition of the lens of the eye? (A) This, as we find, has rather a lesion in same, - through an injury as well as a caught portion of the lens.
-
(Q) What is condition of other parts of the eye? (A) These, as we find, will gradually adjust themselves if there will be the applications in the manner indicated for general body-building, as well as SPECIFIC applications for the physical forces where corrections are needed.
Do these things, as we have indicated, and at least sixty to seventy-five to eighty percent IMPROVEMENT should be expected.
-
(Q) What doctor is recommended for the osteopathic treatments? (A) Anyone that is in sympathy with these suggestions, and willing to do as has been indicated.
-
(Q) How should the Appliance be attached - the Radio-Active? (A) In the manner as indicated for the use of such; circulating about the extremities of the body, you see.
-
We are through for the present.
Two copies to Father (one for Mr. [257] to present to first Dr. Dobbins, then Dr. Erlanger, in the manner indicated) Copy to Ass’n file
(See article [1800-24 Reports - which was enclosed] explaining theory of the Radio-Active Appliance.
Dr. Henry Hardwicke, 494 Hudson St., N.Y.C., has one of these Appliances and I’m sure will be glad to discuss it with you, if you wish.
Codiron is manufactured by The Lawrence Laboratories, Chicago, Ill. At your convenience we would appreciate a history of this case to the time of obtaining the reading, so we may have it to compare with our record. GD.)

R4. 5/19/39 [1844]‘s letter to EC:
…, N.J.
Dear Mr. Cayce
Please excuse my long silence in writing to you pertaining to my condition, but the only excuses I can give are the lack of time, sickness, and the thought of taking up your valuable time which might be devoted towards a more worthy cause than mine.
You see, it took some time before I noticed some change or had anyone else noticed any change in me. You see, I also work in my father’s store and am quite busy, which further caused my inability to write to you. And finally I was laid up for an operation on my appendix and after getting in contact with Mr. [257], I write to you. You see, April 20th I had an attack of acute appendicitis and April 21st I was operated on. Since the above date I haven’t been able to follow my diet, take the osteopathic treatments, nor take the battery treatments due to my staying in the hospital and my being on a special diet for four weeks.
So you see, I don’t know what to do about your instructions. Mr. [257] told me to get a Check reading from you and here are the questions we would like answered:
- Please go over the body in detail and tell me what to do now, whether to carry on the treatment which will bring normal conditions to my eye and my body.
- Has the operation helped me physically?
- Is my incision healing properly?
- When can I begin my osteopathic treatment and for how much longer should I keep this treatment up?
- When should I go to Dr. Erlanger with my eye?
- Shall I resume the battery treatments?
- How often should I use the battery and how much longer?
- What adjustments do I need now?
- What diet is now best for me?
- What exercise can I safely take?
- How can I further improve my eye so I can see better?
- What is the condition of my other eye, and can I in any way improve the sight?
- What can I do to aid my mentality?
- How can I attune myself physically and mentally to help my father in his business, as well as my whole family in their home life?
I shall be in my father’s office at any time and hour specified by you.
This office is in my father’s store and is on the second floor. And the place of business is on … Ave.
Again, I ask you please do not think that I’m not interested in myself but, I do hate to take someone’s time especially yours who’s devoted towards such a worthy cause.
Hoping to hear from you soon.
I remain your servant, [1844]
R5. 5/22/39 EC’s letter to [1844]:
Dear [1844]:
Am glad to have yours of the 19th. Hope you are coming along fine. Of course, heard from Mr. [257] while in New York the week of April 25th that it had been necessary for you to have the operation. Was at Dr. Dobbins’ office for a treatment myself and talked a bit with him about you.
The first opening for a reading we have [1844] is the afternoon of the 7th of June - 3.30 to 4.30 E.S.T. Let me know if that will be satisfactory. Sorry can’t make it sooner, but every bit of time is taken up or promised to someone.
Know that I am anxious to hear from you whenever you feel like writing. I am anxious to be of help and to get you set on the road to make a real success of your life; not just material but your whole life. Make it all worthwhile, see. Make others glad you are alive, and you will be glad also.
With all good wishes to you and yours
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce
R6. 6/1/39 [1844]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce.
Please excuse the delay in not answering your letter, as Mr. [257] wished me to ask Dr. Dobbins some questions, and he was away on his vacation.
These are the following questions that Dr. Dobbins would like to have answered [Memo from Dr. Dobbins was attached]:
- Are the osteopathic treatments been as directed in reading?
- Please give any variation in treatment.
- Should any treatment be given directly to the eyeball?
The following questions are given by Mr. [257]:
- What effect has the electric treatment had on eye?
- Should I continue with Dr. Dobbins and the eye doctor, Erlanger who lives at … at same time?
- If not, what should the procedure for treatment be?
- How many visits should I make to Dr. Erlanger?
- How often should I go to him?
- What special type of treatment should he give me?
- When will I see additional results and benefits?
I shall be at …, N.J. at the time specified and I shall be on the first floor setting in the music room. The house is on the corner of … St. and …
Up to date, my eye has straightened out and my vision has improved slightly and my whole outlook on life has changed for the better.
For this I thank God and you sir for being able to do for me what specialists said would never be done.
I wish I could write & thank you the way my mind & heart would want to, but somehow I can’t express my gratitude upon paper.
Gratefully yours, [1844]

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
We have discussed with Mr. [257] the wonderful things you have done for others and we are writing to-day to ask if you will not attempt to help us. I would like to have a physical diagnosis for my son [1844].
He will be in my office at whatever time you inform me the Reading will be given. If it will be in the morning from 10:30 to 11:30 he will be in the office or he will be there in the afternoon as well. It is a corner building at … Avenue. I have no application to sign, but you may use this letter as my application and if you will send me the application blank, I will sign it and return it to you. But, we would like to have the reading as soon as possible.
Will you be good enough to ask the questions which we have suggested in the event it is not given in the Reading itself.
Please give a physical and mental reading for my son telling us how to correct the condition of his right eye [GD’s note: Scotoma?] and advise as to his mental development.
What is the condition of the lens of the eye What is the present condition of the other parts of the eye Can the sight be restored to this eye What is the best way to restore this sight What doctor is recommended for the treatment What is the general physical condition of the body What will be best to build up the physical condition of the body What is the best diet for the body to aid the physical treatment What will aid the body to be fully confident of his recovery and aid him to develop his life for this best future and success How long will it take to see the effects of the treatment upon the eye How long will it take to bring the eye back in the condition as promised Is there any other advice for the physical and mental betterment of this body What was the real cause of the condition as seen in the eye Is there any foreign substance of any kind in the eye at the present time What is the best endeavor for the body to devote his time to to keep himself happy and enthusiastic about the future of his work and interests Should the body wear glasses at any time. If so, what type of glasses should be used on this eye What is the condition of the other eye What is best exercise for the body’s general condition
Thanking you in advance for your courtesy and hoping to have the pleasure of meeting you when you are in New York, I am
Sincerely, [1965]
Please send me your literature.
B2. 3/8/39 [257]‘s letter to EC: ”…I am attaching my check for the [1844] reading. This is a very large family and they are all from Poland. They are in the furniture business in Jersey and a lovely family. There must be twenty members in the family. This is another ‘[773]’ case [injury?] and I hope that the reading will be very complete and that we can save the boy’s eye…You are contacting some of the finest groups of people I have ever known. The boy is a handsome fellow and both father and son had a good cry when they found out how you use your life and what your work was…”
B3. 3/10/39 EC’s ltr. to [257]: ”…Have written making the appointment…
“Certainly hope we may be of help with his body - for know full well what such a condition means…”
B4. 3/10/39 [1844]‘s letter to EC:
…, N.J.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
You no doubt think me bold to write you this letter and take up your valuable time which could be put to a more worthy task than reading my letter.
By now I think you have received the letter sent to you by my father telling of my fortunes or misfortunes as you might have it. The reason I say fortune is because I consider myself lucky that the accident wasn’t more damaging to me.
The reason I take this liberty is that I’ve heard so much about you, and your humanitarian work from Mr. [257] that I feel as if known you for a long time. I have often prayed that it would be my good fortune to meet some one who might be able to help me. But now I know I’ve reached the end of my road for you are the one I’ve seeked for unknowingly.
Mr. [257] told me some of the marvelous things that you did for Humanity for the past thirty years of your mutual association. One often reads of men like you sir and Mr. [257] in books but never gets the chance to ever meet them. Nor did I expect to meet such an unselfish man as Mr. [257] who would speak so highly of another human being, with such sincerity and simplicity. Mr. [257] told me that you have an Autobiography [MY LIFE AND WORK booklet by Edgar Cayce] of yourself, could I possibly have one if I’m not imposing upon your good nature.
Hoping that someday I shall have the pleasure to meet such a noble person as yourself when you come to New York.
I remain your servant for life. [1844]
B5. 3/13/39 EC’s letter to [1844]:
Dear [1844]
I just think it was the nicest thing ever for you to write me, and don’t think I am ever or will ever be too busy to listen or read a word from anyone [when] there is a possibility for me to be used to be of help. Just feel sure that your interest, your sincerity will be a helping hand in your regaining your health completely. Yes, had a letter from your father and wrote him setting the date for your reading for the afternoon of the 17th, 3:30 to 4:30 EST. Be sure and let me know just where you will be at that hour. And you just offer a silent or audible prayer to God that I may be used as the means of your knowing just what may be done to help your eyes. For HE answers prayer, I am sure, and am sure you feel that way also.
Thank you ever so much for writing me, and will appreciate a word from you at any time, and will be glad for you to ask me all the questions that you wish; anything about the work or myself. And want you to tell me all about yourself and what you wish to do with yourself here. And can I be of a help at any time for your or your friends, please don’t hesitate to call on me. I hope when next I am in N.Y. that you will come and see me. Would like very much to have a talk with you.
Sincerely hoping in HIS name that I may be of a service to you.
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce
