This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 16th day of May, 1939, in accordance with request made by the wife - Mrs. [1074], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:35 to 12:00 Noon Eastern Standard Time. …, Missouri.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions which have been submitted, as I ask them.
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [1885].
-
As we find, there are disturbing conditions which have prevented and do prevent the better normal physical functioning.
-
While in some respects there are changes from that which has disturbed the body, and apparently helpful conditions have been the result, in others there are changes in the conditions that have not been entirely satisfactory.
-
The disturbance, as we find, has primarily to do with the whole of the hepatic circulation; thus the liver AND the kidneys, and the kidneys have been accentuated in effect more than the liver, - though in the present the liver apparently is the greater disorder.
-
As we find, these are then the disturbing conditions with this body, [1885]:
-
The natural reaction from the disturbances of this nature has been not only a general weakness, but at times a high temperature; and the system attempting to adjust itself to the activities through those areas has been greatly lessened in the abilities for purifying the blood, in making for the elimination of poisons from the system from the natural activity of the organs in relation to the assimilating of foods and the creating of those influences for the resuscitation and the building up of resistances.
-
Hence there is not only weakness but incapacitation for activities, and the effects are naturally to both the nervous systems.
-
As we find, there has been congestion to the extent of pus in the kidney. At present there is a deeper-seated disturbance in the liver’s excretory functioning; and this naturally has caused the acute symptoms and pains to shift in portions of the body.
-
These are not NECESSARILY operative conditions - if there will be brought the proper stimulation through the food values and those internal influences that may work with the attempts of the system to adjust itself to the disturbing forces, as combined with the stimulating of the activities of centers in the cerebrospinal system as related to the activity of the hepatics.
-
Such osteopathic stimulations should be kept as they have been, but combine more the stimulations of the secondary cardiac area; that there may be greater drainages in their relation to impulse of activity of the nerves through the liver, as well as the ducts and the glandular forces of the organs that are so closely associated with the excretory functioning of the liver.
-
Also these should be in the lower portion of the dorsal area, that - as combined with applications as we find necessary for the allaying of the temperature, the allaying of the inflammatory forces both in the liver and in the kidney area - there may be greater drainages. This, then, would necessitate some stimulation in the lower LUMBAR areas, - these, of course, coordinated with the circulatory forces to the head and to the upper portion of the body. But the secondary cardiac, the 9th dorsal, the 4th lumbar in proper stimulations for drainages, for impulse of nerve activity from BOTH the cerebrospinal AND the sympathetic nerve system.
-
Such manipulations should be given morning and evening.
-
Also each evening - and EARLY morning, - that is, in the evening before retiring, and at the early morning period when the body becomes restless by the sediments that tend to gather in the kidney and bladder, and the irritation that comes from same, - we would apply the Green (if possible to obtain) Mullein Stupes. These should be applied over both the liver and gall duct area, and over the kidney area from the back. These should remain upon the body for at least twenty to thirty minutes to an hour, depending upon the ease that same brings, to be sure. In making the Stupes, - let these be prepared with the GREEN Mullein if possible, - this bruised and then the hot water poured on same (in a crock or enamel container). Have them at least two thicknesses over the body, with a gauze and then heavy padding afterward, - and even an electric pad over both areas would be beneficial.
-
Prepare and take internally a mild Watermelon Seed Tea, prepared in this manner, or these proportions: Take a tablespoonful of watermelon seed (before they are crushed or cut). Then crush or cut same, and put in a pint of boiling water - or put them in a tea container (crock) and pour a pint of boiling water over same. Let steep for at least thirty minutes. Take this quantity during a day; taking a tablespoonful to two tablespoonsful two, three, four times a day; but this should be repeated at least two or three times each week, so that there may be the activity not only of the nitre that is an active principle in same - upon the whole of the circulatory system as related to the upper and lower hepatic circulation, but that there may be a purifying of the system in the activity of same with the combinations of that stimulation from the Mullein Stupes on the areas indicated.
-
Then, as to the rest of the diet:
-
The Jerusalem artichoke should be a portion of the diet each day. This would be taken preferably cooked, but it may be taken raw if preferable. The insulin from same - as it is easily assimilated for the activities not only of the pancreas and spleen and liver activity but - will aid in reducing the inclination for the inflammation and pus activity in the kidney itself. One artichoke the size of a duck egg or turkey egg, or thereabouts, should be taken each day, - that is, the tuber of the Jerusalem artichoke, see?
-
No meats, - if any are taken, only the broths of fowl; ESPECIALLY those portions of the neck, the feet, the back or the like, cooked for a LONG period and broths made from same. From THESE portions we find that calcium, in an assimilated form, would aid in strengthening the blood stream through the assimilation of this for further assisting in purifying the blood force and alleviating those inclinations for that to be carried through the system FROM the hepatics to be eliminated.
-
Eliminating foods, of course, are preferable, - as in any of the vegetable forces, any of the vegetables that are an active force for not too great a stimulation for the lymph and emunctory activity through the alimentary canal, but that are stimulating to same for better activity, - as the pieplant [rhubarb], or similar foods that aid in such activity.
-
Junket, even those principles as from gelatin and the like are to be desired, - if they agree with the body or if the appetite will take portions of same.
-
Not too much, yet, of those foods that are too heavy in the contents as from cereals. But crushed wheat and oats, especially cut oats, are desirable - these, of course, in moderation.
-
Do ALL of these or NONE; and as we find (if these are done) we will bring much better forces for this body, [1885].
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is there any permanent damage done to the liver? (A) None that may not be materially aided towards normalcy, with those proper administrations. For, remember, - the liver, - yea, all the organs as related to same are much like the tongue - they soon heal by the very nature of their activity with the whole of the reserve energies of the bodily forces, through assimilation and activity. And yet they are the more easily susceptible to those influences of whatever nature that may be administered to the body.
-
(Q) Is the mental state a major factor of his disability? (A) This, of course, has been, - the discouragements that have come, the lack of the responses, - but as we find, if there will be the administration of the suggestions here, we may soon find real help towards PERMANENT recuperative forces in the body.
To be sure, should there be - either from the liver or from the kidney - that which PERSISTENTLY causes such great temperatures, then other measures might become necessary. But if there is a consistent application of all suggestions made here, we should find relief.
- We are through for the present.

(GD’s notes at the time of the reading: See extra sheet [which was enclosed] of suggestions for Osteopath.
If the Jerusalem artichoke may not be obtained there, you may order some from John A. Salter Seed Co., LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
You may obtain watermelon seed from any seed store.
Green Mullein Leaves may be gathered from the fields in many sections; it grows wild and may be gathered at this time of year.
At your convenience we would appreciate a history of the case to the time of obtaining the Reading. This is valuable for our files, so we may have something with which to compare our information.)
Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 5/31/39 Wife [1074]‘s letter to EC:
“We were very glad to receive the reading for Dr. [1885] and are doing our best to follow out your advice to the letter. It was a very accurate reading and described the doctor’s condition perfectly. As soon as I have the time I will be very glad to send you his case history.
“Mr. Cayce, where do I send the payment for the reading and how much will it be? I have been wondering and did not want you to think I had forgotten it.
“I will write you as often as I can and keep you posted on Dr. [1885]‘s condition. We deeply appreciate your interest and kindness…”
R2. 6/7/39 EC’s letter to wife, [1074]:
“Thank you for yours of the 31st - do hope the Dr. will respond to the suggestions, and feel that he will if there is a consistent application of the suggestion. From his report, Dr. Richard Still at Macon is seeing results with a patient sent there from the reading. That might encourage them at least to give the suggestion a try. Tell the Dr. [1885], Mr. [470] and Mrs. [1100] were here last evening, and were glad to hear from him. They are planning to be a year in Italy, I believe.
“Will appreciate, Mrs. [1074], your letting us hear from you and the Dr. Am happy to try and be of a service to him haven’t forgotten how nice he has been to each of us.
“Thanking you again and again, and hoping to hear that the Dr. is soon decidedly on the improve…”
R3. 7/24/39 Wife [1074]‘s letter to EC:
“A belated account of the illness of Dr. [1885] as per requested with the Reading.
“The disorder was preceded by increasing fatigue, nervousness, insomnia, and night sweats, and, later, by a loss of weight. Finally, on January 18, 1939, it was necessary for the Dr. to give up practicing. His own diagnosis, and those of other physicians varied widely - ‘nerves,’ colitis, hepatitis, amoebic dysentery, etc. The latter diagnosis was found to be correct, in lab checkups, but the symptoms were not, in all, compatible with that diagnosis. Finally, a diagnosis by Dr. Louisa Burns, the Osteopathic profession’s wonderful lab technician, and the Reading, both indicated the disorder was due mainly to the effect of the nervous system on the liver and the kidneys. The Reading and Dr. Burns were entirely in agreement - even to prognosis.
“The Amoeba had been eliminated by treatment previous to the Reading, and the treatment as advised in the Reading was, and is still, in part, being carried out. Improvement has been steady, though with remissions - at these times the liver packing is resorted to, and seems to be all that is necessary.
“The reading was very helpful to the patient - and seemingly very accurate.”
“Present plans are for Dr. [1885] to return to … sometime this summer or fall and return to practice. A check reading sometime in the near future would probably be of great benefit in this case…”
R4. 12/3/39 Miss [1703]‘s letter:
“Dr. [1885] recovered his illness and began to practice this fall. I went to see him and was delighted to find he had had a reading with you. He is praising you, and says his recovery is due to the very accurate diagnosis and instructions given in the reading. No one had been able to ‘lay a finger’ on the exact spot like you did, he said.”
R5. 2/28/40 Wife [1074]‘s letter to EC:
“We had such wonderful results from your reading on Dr. [1885] and he is now back in practice once again. He has yet to gain a lot of weight before he is normal once again but physically everything is as good as we can expect after his prolonged illness.
“Would it be possible for me to get a ‘life reading’ for Dr. [1885]? I feel that it will be of great help to him. I would also like one for myself. I have received your articles about your ‘life readings’ and feel that in them we may find a clue for our future happiness. Our future happiness is essential now that our lives are concerned with the future of our little daughter.
“I will be anxiously awaiting your reply about these…”

R7. 10/23/74 Report given by Mr. Albert J. Gauthier:
“In June of 1969 we moved from Merrimac, Mass. to Tucson, Arizona to seek relief for our youngest daughter, Renee. She had been suffering from bronchial asthma since birth and her condition was worsening. My wife had sinus at the time and we felt the climate would help. During our four years stay Renee had only three attacks and we were sure that she was getting better. Now we have been justified in our conviction. However, my wife’s sinus attacks were continuing. The only relief were the constant supply of Excedrin and Dristan tablets.
“In early 1971, our other daughter Desiree, age 8, began complaining of headaches, constipation, fever and a burning pain whenever she went to the bathroom (urine). We took her to doctors in Tucson and were told she had a strep throat. Two days later she broke out with a rash around her neck and a severe pain in her neck. We could not hold her temperature down (105 degrees) and rushed her to Tucson County Hospital. It was there we learned of uranic [uremic?] poisoning and of her kidney disorders. She was admitted to St. Mary’s hospital, and there with the aid of a dye test, found that she had three kidneys, two on her right and one on her left side. The two on her right were diseased. They began medication with Gantracin [Gantrasin?]. For a year she continued on the medication and finally the infection cleared. She was told that she would be required to drink plenty of water to keep her kidneys flushed.
“During the year 1971-72 we learned about Edgar Cayce. At first I was very skeptical, not wanting to believe that such a person existed, or if he did, somehow must have been a fake. During this period I happened to sprain my back. No better opportunity presented itself than the present to disprove his claim. So I tried the Castor Oil Pack. Within 24 hours the pain disappeared. We continued reading Jess Stearn’s THE SLEEPING PROPHET. We heard of Doctor McGarey and the Clinic in Phoenix. We tried again, and with Glyco-Thymoline my wife’s sinus problems all but disappeared. Now we were believers. Having nothing else to read, we joined Mrs. Marcelle Porter’s ‘Search For God’ group in Tucson, and I began to read the Bible. We remained with the group ‘til 1973. Then - tragedy again befell us. Desiree began again to complain of headaches and constipation. This time we went to the University Hospital. There, kidney problem was again the diagnosis. We decided that the heat perhaps was causing dehydration. So in July, 1973 we came back to New England. We gave her some Gantracin and she seemed to get better. October, 1973 she had another attack. This time the doctors insisted that surgery was required. My wife tearfully repeated to me what the doctor said - the possibility of recovery was 50%. We sat down and talked. We prayed and talked. We argued and talked. Finally with nothing left we planned the opeartion for Nov. 1, 1973. Afterwards we talked some more. Now, the Gantracin was not working; her fever continued. We talked about Edgar Cayce and decided to call the organization. The rest is history. The watermelon tea cleared up her fever within 24 hours. The pus in her urine within 48 was cleared up.
“It has been one year now and I am happy to report her health has improved. During this year she has had no attacks whatsoever…”
