GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions he submits, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [1888], present in this room.
-
Now as we find, there are conditions which prevent the normal functioning of the physical forces of this body.
-
These have to do primarily with those activities of the lower hepatic circulation, or the kidneys, AND the effects that are produced upon the locomotory centers or the lower limbs and the activities of the circulation through same.
-
Then, these are the conditions as we find them with this body, [1888], we are speaking of, present in this room:
-
As we find, the condition is a complication or combination of disturbances, - from an injury to the end of the spine and those areas in the sacral, as WELL as the effects of an infectious force which disturbed the system as related to the activity of the lower hepatic or the kidney circulation.
-
These then as we find have produced in the body these effects:
-
First, from the impingements in the lower end of the spine, or the coccyx AND sacral area, from an old injury when many years younger, - and the effects of the infectious forces later, - the activities of the circulation through the locomotories have been prevented.
-
Hence the effects to the sciatic centers, or the sciatic nerve, - and thus producing swelling in the lower limbs, even to the feet and ankle, as well as making for an increase in the blood pressure as to cause the eliminations to be hindered; and, through the SYMPATHETIC reaction, involving the upper hepatic or the liver and ITS activity.
-
Thus a source of infection is produced which causes a neuritic reaction through the body, especially affecting the lower limbs and the lower portion of the abdominal area.
-
These as we find may at times be called neuritis, rheumatic or even arthritic tendencies. Because of the pressures upon the nervous system, and the lack of impulses from the impingements in the areas which have been indicated, these HAVE produced, do produce the tendency for the nerve pressures; and thus become neuritic in their reaction.
-
As we find, these have not as yet affected the kidneys in the FUNCTIONING of same, other than sympathetically, - but as to the amount of the uremic poisons that are allowed to reabsorb in the system, these cause an inclination for a dropsical effect, or the lymph or the superficial circulation in its attempt to overcome the poisons in the lower circulatory system in the lower extremities is inclined to produce inflammation.
-
Hence the pains across the small of the back, through the hips, through the limbs and even to the feet at times so that they become almost as if they would burst from the pressures there, - causing excruciating pains at times.
-
These conditions, sympathetically of course, affect the heart’s activity; though there is not an organic disturbance.
-
Without relief, eventually this will cause the inclination for the body to pitch forward when it attempts to use the lower limbs, as already indicated at times, - or a digitan, or a palsied effect in the upper portion and the INACTIVITY through the lower portion of the extremities; and greater will become the disturbance with the heart’s activity, owing to the SLOWED circulation and the tendency for increasing in the poisons being carried in the system.
-
As we find, this may be entirely eliminated from the system, and the body - in a little while - should become near to normal, WITHOUT even the recurrent conditions; though it will require persistent and consistent activities in those directions as will not only RELIEVE the disturbance but CORRECT those conditions which are causing same.
-
This as we find will require, first, a great deal of activity - in application - on the part of the body itself and those who may minister to the helpful forces for the body. These should become, then, rather as a routine of treatments and applications:
-
First, there shall be particular consideration for the diet. These are things NOT to eat: No hog meat at any time, of ANY character. No fried foods of any kind at ANY time.
-
Meats, if meats are taken, shall only be fish, fowl or lamb, - none of these fried, but broiled, baked or the like.
-
Potatoes, - only the outer portion of same, NOT the pulp, may be taken. The skins may be taken, and the portions close to same, but not the central portion of the potato.
-
Beware of white bread.
-
Do not eat great quantities of fat of any kind. With roasts, do not eat the fat of the lamb or the fowl. Of the fowl, preferably eat plenty of the bony portions, - as the thigh, the wing, the neck, the head. Chew these so that the juice from same may be swallowed - for these are very well, and the calcium from same will be beneficial to the body; but fats work a hardship upon the kidneys as well as upon the upper hepatic circulation, and tend to make the stress greater.
-
Plenty of carrots, celery, lettuce, onions, radish, spinach, - and all of the leafy vegetables. When any of these are cooked, let them preferably not be cooked with meat, - as cabbage, for instance, or those of such natures. These should be taken, but cook in clear water with a little seasoning, and then when done add a little butter, but NOT meat.
-
Then, to reduce these conditions, and to make for the reliefs to the body:
-
First we would begin with poultices of Mullein, - these applied across the lower portion of the abdomen, as well as across the small of the back, - from the 9th dorsal area to the end of the spine. This would be done each evening for a period of at least TWO WEEKS. The body will see results long before that time, but these are to be applied at least two or three thicknesses. Gather the GREEN Mullein, - this bruised and hot water poured over same - BOILING hot - poured over the leaves themselves, as well as some of the juice from the leaves being applied to the body. (Prepare in an enamel or crock container, NOT tin or aluminum.) Use heavy toweling or cloths over the packs to keep the heat in. Keep these on for at least one hour each evening.
-
Following the applications of these Mullein Stupes, massage the limbs - from the feet to the body, and towards the body, gently but thoroughly - with an equal combination of Olive Oil and Peanut Oil. This will be absorbed; and all the body will absorb should be massaged into the body. For the first week it will be found that it will require considerable.
Take at least half an hour in massaging this into the lower limbs.
-
Take internally the Toris Compound. Get two ounces, or two quantities. Make one quantity with the Simple Syrup. Make the other quantity with Rye Whiskey (and don’t drink whiskey besides this, or any of the fermented drinks! for these are hard upon not only the kidneys but they will make for greater disturbances in the liver!) - half a pint of Pure or Rye Whiskey. Then put BOTH quantities together. Be sure to use the Syrup of Sarsaparilla in preparing BOTH, - as the directions are given on the package.
-
The dose, in the beginning, would be a teaspoonful of this combination four times each day; after each meal and at bedtime.
-
Also use at least once a week a high enema (using a colon tube, you see), to evacuate the bowel thoroughly. For with the packs or the stupes, and with the rubs, there is the necessity of greater eliminations of the poisons through the alimentary canal.
-
After these all have been kept up for two weeks - each day, as indicated - we would then begin with the osteopathic adjustments (but do not begin these until after the other applications have been made for two weeks, you see). At least eight or ten will be necessary. These would be to correct the position of the cerebrospinal system, and the pressures in the coccyx - which will necessarily have to be raised; and those in the lumbar axis will necessarily have to be corrected. The rest of the system, from the 9th dorsal upward, will be COORDINATED with the corrections made in the lower end of the spine.
-
Do these - being consistent, persistent - we will find this body, [1888] regaining the full control of the lower limbs, and a near to normal condition through the body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Any particular osteopath you would suggest to give these treatments? (A) If it is practical or possible, have it done by Hudgins.
-
(Q) I have some people in Baltimore. Could I go there and have it done? Would you suggest one? (A) Anyone that will do it properly. The usual activity is to treat the upper portion of the spine. HERE it is necessary to follow those directions as indicated. If one there will do it in that manner, very well.
There will be a great improvement in the first two weeks, even before these adjustments are begun, but do not stop until all of the directions have been followed.
Do not break over in the diet and eat other things. These as indicated, of course, are not the only things to be eaten. Beware of hog meat and those things as outlined.
Reduce the conditions with the applications as indicated first, - taking the properties of the Toris Compound made in the manners given.
It may be necessary, during the period the corrections are made osteopathically, to continue with another round of the Toris Compound; but this will ELIMINATE the poisons, - but these must be done properly!
- We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 6/10/39 Letter to EC from [1888]: “Just a few lines to let you hear how I am. I am suffering awful bad at times some times I feel right good. I have taken the compound for three weeks and have use the Mullein for one week and rubbed with the peanut oil & olive oil as you said. I could not get the peanut oil to start with at first should I keep on taking the compound. I will be used the mullein two weeks next Sat. Would you suggest I go on to the Dr. right away? I want to go to Norfolk to the one you suggest. Let me hear from you right away what to do.”
R2. 6/12/39 EC’s letter to [1888]: “Have yours of the 10th - and note what you have to say. Believe would take another round of the compound with the other things also then go to the Dr. Do hope you can come to the one in Norfolk, would like to see you and talk with you again, and know you can get the correct treatments from the man here, Dr. Hudgins…”
R3. 7/12/39 [1888]‘s letter to EC: “I am writing to you to ask you what is wrong. I have taken 7 treatments and do not feel any better. Is the Dr. doing his part and am I doing mine. You said in your rdg. that to take at least 8 or 10 treatments. I am going Friday, 14th to take the 8th treatment and again Tuesday for the 9th one. When can I have an appointment with you? You told me if I didn’t get better you would go over my body and find out what was the trouble. So please let me hear from you what to do and do I have to be there at your place for the check rdg.? I have not got disgusted yet, but it seems awful hard.”
