1. GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity and that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions which may be submitted, as I ask them:

3. Yes, we have the records of that entity now known as or called [1962].

4. In giving the interpretations of the records as we find them, these - as we have oft indicated - are chosen with the desire to make the experience a helpful one, in such a way and manner as to bring greater opportunities for the entity during this material sojourn.

5. These interpretations, then, are those that would indicate the vices as well as the virtues; and as to changes that might be necessary, provided the same ideal is maintained by the entity as that indicated from the premise from which such information is selected from records here.

6. In giving that as might be said to be the composite of astrological as well as of material sojourns, and the application of self in the present, - these we find as being in line with same:

7. There are the evidences that a literary career should be that chosen by the entity, - while there are new ways, new ideas that are occurring, that are active within the mental experience of the entity.

8. Hence the necessity for the entity choosing, or analyzing self in such a way and manner as to know what is the ideal relationship of a soul-entity to the Creative Forces we call God, - as well as an ideal attitude and activity of a mental being that would serve or fulfill that purpose; and, lastly, there should be the ideal manner of expression of those phases of the ideals in relationships with the fellow man.

9. Then, write about this, - whether in fact, in fiction, by ALL MEANS WRITE! Practise it! But have something to say, not merely filling a page or space with words, but first knowing what is the purpose and the lesson that is to be presented, in a manner that it may be a helpful influence, a constructive experience for those who would read same.

10. And it should never be that which has not in a mental, spiritual or material manner been the experience of the entity.

11. Thus may the character and characters be given life, and a conversation that is real and living. Thus may the entity succeed the better.

12. Through this composite activity as indicated, the entity is also endowed with an appreciation of color, of light and dark. Hence the tone to such articles, books, stories, situations, activities - if it is practised - will be beautiful in structure as well as in the lessons to be gained from same.

13. If there is to be a pattern, let it be one whose birthdate harmonizes with thine own, and whose direction may aid, - A. Conan Doyle. Such characters as he depicted and brought to life, so may ye in thy fertile imagination, as well as in fact learning what ye WANT to say - from the ideal; not idealistic alone, but as indicated.

14. In the astrological aspects from these records we find Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Neptune, as the ruling influences, - others more or less depending upon the periods. For the entity, as may be indicated from the very nature or type of work suggested, is moody - or must be moved by an impulse oft accredited to the within when it is without, often accredited to the without when it is really within.

15. Know that the kingdom of heaven is within, and that the kingdom of God is without; and these are the kingdoms to which ye alone would give allegiance, - and thy characters the same.

16. In Venus we will find a great deal of adoration and love that will gradually be brought about the entity. Don’t think too highly of thyself. Remain humble if ye would materially, mentally or spiritually succeed. Keep humble.

17. From the Jupiterian sojourn we find benevolent influences, especially in those periods of June or January, that make for changes for definite activity. The days of the week, as we find, will be Thursdays. Such periods would be called by some “lucky” - they are the vibrations to the change that has been made in thy name and in thy activity.

18. Also we find in Jupiter the influence for the activities to be activative upon the lives of many peoples, - as well as in Neptune the water, the creative, the new ideas, new relationships, changes of every nature, as well as the ability to tone and color such activities.

19. Use that thou hast in hand day by day.

20. As to the appearances in the earth, we find these in some respects also have been and are colorful in their very activity.

21. Before this we find the entity, as Alexandria Goodrich, of an English descent or birth, attempted to make for a historical activity in a manner, - that was better prepared by those of its own household; however, the entity’s activity was very good.

22. Hence the abilities, the mysteries, the activities shown within the experience of the entity in the present - from that experience as Alexandria Goodrich.

23. Before that we find the entity was in the Roman experience when there were the variations in the land’s activity by the expansions in the mighty relationships; and there we find the entity mapping out the plans for campaigns for those who were in authority in the varied lands.

24. Thus the ability to tone or color or draw upon the imaginative forces, as well as the necessity for fact as well as the truth to be a part of the experience.

25. There we find the entity, as Elemen, making for the experience that has never been counted as to its real value in the periods of the second and third Ceasars. For the entity then gave to the world and to those peoples much that was not ever accredited to the entity.

26. Seek not then for glory of self. Remain humble. Do the biddings for an ideal, if ye would gain and have peace and harmony in thy experience.

27. Before that we find the entity was in the land of the “city in the hills and the plains,” when the peoples from the Grecian land made for those activities when there was the usage of others of other sects to draw upon the activities in that Persian land.

28. The entity then was among the leaders who supervised. There we find the entity again coming under the leadership of Uhjltd, the entity - as Scemon - became so active in making for the recording of those experiences of the various individuals that he lost his hold upon his own peoples, - because his expressions were used as evidence against him. And yet in the spiritual and mental things the entity gained throughout.

29. So may the entity in the present, in the application of those ideals as may be set only in Him who is the author, the giver of life, light and immortality. Know the truth of those first expressions in a portion of His description, - “In the beginning was the Word.” And as these develop, know that is the beginning of the experiences of man in his relationships to the personality in a material world.

30. In that influence, then, may the ideal and truth be set. Hold fast to that!

31. In the experience before that we find the entity was in the Atlantean land, when there were those periods of destruction. For the entity was among the children of Belial who used those influences of power and might from the realms to which man had given a force for self-indulgence.

32. Hence the needs in the present are for the humbleness, which is the virtue to be stressed in and through the present experience.

33. Thus, as we find the application of self - first - study to know what is the ideal, - not as to what others would be to you, but what ye would also be to them. What is the ideal relationship of the Maker to the creature? Is it not expressed in the Son?

34. What is the ideal relationships of a ruler to his people? whether he be king or president?

35. There IS evidently an ideal, and it is not founded other than in the spiritual approach. For that alone that is ideal is enduring, and only good - as God - is enduring.

36. We are through for the present.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Thank you for the reading which you sent me and your letter following advising me to read it over every once in a while. I have been so busy following out the advice given in the reading that I had not done many of the things which I should one particularly to thank you for the interest you seem to have taken with me.

I have written as you said in your reading. That idea I called “Crystal Vision” has been most prominent in my mind and I have experimented at quite a length with others (I don’t possess the power myself) so it provided the most logical thing about which I could write. I sent it to the true Mystic Science magazine in Minneapolis - one which would be most likely to accept the idea.

In one of your letters you spoke of the “Crystal Vision” and did not seem to be much inclined toward it and possibly regarded it as being in your case a misuse of your power. I doubt very much that the two are at all similar. As far as I have been able to discover my technique will connect you with the entity called the guardian spirit who knows you intimately but I doubt very much if he has any access to the tremendous amount of information that is available through your gift. Two of my friends came in contact with that being who responded to the mental inquiry “who are you” - “I am one who is always with you,” the other “I am the one with whom your destiny lies.” These beings will seldom speak of their own initiative but await the questions. They will not answer all questions and show a decided inclination to advise how to be of assistance to others. I would not call this self-hypnosis because at all times the person attempting the vision has full control of themselves and can cease instantly. The whole principle is electrical and scientific. The pineal gland in the center of the brain has all the qualities of the retina on the back of the eye and when the right condition is brought about by proper focussing this ability perceives that which is not possible with our eyes. It is a function of the brain and the sooner we are able to make use of it CONSTRUCTIVELY the sooner we will be able to turn our efforts toward the accomplishment of that which we are to do. You may resent this idea just a bit but you could not answer all the questions of the population of Norfolk were they all to believe and ask constantly about their daily lives. If people found out, to their own satisfaction, that they could ask questions and the answer come with the reality (that it has come to several with whom I have experimented.) they would be willing to follow the advice that they by themselves received. Their very ego would not permit them to regard themselves as crazy, but, when it comes to holding thoughts of others and even making very blunt statements, they are very careless. In your work, if it is possible for a great many people to contact their guardian spirit, you would find yourself with bookings six months or more in advance. As I said before you can avail yourself and others of information way beyond the range of the guardian spirit. I should like to know of your reaction to it.

Last week I received notice from the brokerage firm where I have been working for several years that due to the business conditions they were obliged to let me go. In a way I was glad to be released for that was as I regarded the situation. I may now devote myself to a new phase of life. The thing that bothers me is the fact that I have several debts to pay one being $5 of the fee for the reading. I am in hopes that I may receive something for that article on the “Crystal Vision”. I tried hard enough to make it interesting. I open you will be kind enough to permit me to defer the payment of my debt until I am able to do so. At present the pocketbook is quite flat.

There are answers to so many questions in your reading. I am constantly reading it over and discovering something else. I cannot thank you enough. Had I lost my job before I received your advice I am sure the sensation would have been similar to a fish out of water. I will follow what you have indicated to the best of my ability.

Dear Mr. [1962]:

Have been away for a much needed rest - hence the delay in replying to yours of the 10th, am happy to know you feel there is something to be gained by a careful study of the information, that has been the consensus of opinion of at least nine tenths of the people for whom such readings have been given.

As to your “crystal vision” do not know about same - and having been able to help here and there for years with a very natural means - why should I jepodize [jeopardize] the purpose with an attempt to undertake it through other channels could not with justice to myself and those who seek at present - could I with out at least asking the information

• that has said it is best for me - so there you are - do not condemn it at all in those who care to use that method - may give them a power not yet dreamed of - but if open - will their Guardian Angel always be the director, and if not in deep enough conditions for self to left out - then will self always remain impersonal? those are my personal feelings - and is not a condemning of the method at all.

Am in hopes you succeed in selling your article to the magazine sorry in a way - yet am sure the need of the Brokerage to conserve may soon prove to be that as will help you show your real worth - write - write - write - that is what you will have to do - and am sure you will soon be getting some where.

R3. 7/11/40 [1962]‘s letter to EC:

Mr. Hugh Lynn Cayce, Virginia Beach, Virginia

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Thank you for your interesting letter. Mrs. Belcher has written me since returning from Virginia Beach. I should very much have liked to have attended the Congress but, unfortunately, my financial circumstances are terribly limited at present.

I am glad that you have given the technic to some one who is interested in experimental work, but I still insist that if you are able to accomplish it you could travel with your father to the realm from which he is able to gather information, however, satisfy yourself first through the experiments of another as to what happens.

If you feel so inclined, would you let me have the address of the one who is experimenting with the technic? There are a number of details concerning the path of travel which if not known very definitely limit the scope of the perception. Usually one comes immediately in contact with the realm of the earthbound individual. I try to persuade this particular person to realize the state of his condition and the elapse of time of which he is quite unaware, and then go on to higher realms to intelligences of greater stature who have knowledge of things past and things to be.

The real difficulty is to keep mentally active and explore. If the person trying the perception is inclined to go passive, he won’t get anywhere and will very likely fall asleep within a few minutes.

Mrs. Belcher has very likely told you of her attempts to recover a deposit of Tory gold buried near her home during the Revolutionary War. We have also discovered three deposits here on Staten Island, but there are certain conditions which make it difficult to dig immediately.

There are three things which I would like to ask your father just as soon as I afford to do so. They are to add to the description of this perception of the third eye, the details for making a radio through which the etheric voice could speak and the secret of etherizing matter, transporting it and rematerializing it without change in its original form. Undoubtedly information may be given concerning the first two, but the time for the third may not yet have arrived, however, I can ask.

I hate to see many of the beautiful things in New York destroyed just because those persons in whose hands they lie are so disinclined to accept any warning of the earthquake in ‘42. Perhaps these things could be saved if a certain group of responsible character could be entrusted the secret of etherizing substance. Undoubtedly there is a very definite reason for the destruction of the coastal cities but that is certainly no reason why works of art should go smash just because their owners are temporarily stupid.

The proper solution may come forth before May 3rd 1942 but I don’t think that those who know of the event should sit idly by and wait for things to go as they will. To me that attitude is terribly fatalistic and that of a defeatist. My idea is that the constructive individual should do all in his power to save that which is good and beautiful and allow the evil to destroy itself which it eventually, usually does.

I would be very glad to know further of the outcome of the experiments with the perception and of the experimenter’s address, that is, if you feel inclined to send it to me.

R4. 8/3/56 [1962]‘s letter to HLC:

Dear Hugh Lynn,

I have been turning the house upside down trying to locate a reading that your father had made for me in 1938. I am not even sure of the year. Victor Harrington tells me that members may request a transcript of readings that have been made and catalogued. If mine should be one of those available, may I have another copy of it?

Relative to the “Projection of the Mind” technique to enable members to consciously contact Edgar Cayce’s higher self, I am enclosing a photostat of the original drawing I have made for the pamphlets. If you should desire to use the illustration in conjunction with an article indicating the use of the technique make your plate for the printer from it instead of the poorer proofs in the pamphlets themselves. Some people find that the illustration itself is a potent symbol to reach other levels of the mind other than the level we call “conscious”. If the illustration is placed on a desk with a good light upon it and the percipient stares for two or three minutes directly at the sphere of glass on the forehead of the picture, a definite strong reaction is evoked in some people. I am sending you several spheres of blue glass for the experiments that you may make.

I hope that you will make use of the projection technique along the lines I indicated in my first letter. Projection is the essential key and means of operation to all your father’s work. I believe that it should be most thoroughly explored and utilized. My hope is that it will ultimately lead to the initiation lead to the initiation of several competent individuals to carry on in active production the stream of endeavor that your father started. No one is more fully qualified (that we know of) than your father to give instruction in the actual extra dimensional nature of the work which he did. This projection technique enables some people who are still physical to approach Edgar Cayce and to ask him to train them in the operation of the readings which made him a valuable “citizen of the world.”

If you would like me to write an article on the specific use of the projection technique to Edgar Cayce’s work, I would be most happy to do so. In the mean time I trust that your endeavors along these lines will reveal to you the start of a program that can have tremendous influence and effect upon the lives of countless individuals in the future.

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.

My dear Mr. Cayce,

I have read a little booklet entitled “The Last Supper” [by Jennie Moore] which spoke of your abilities along psychic lines. I am certain I have such qualities and I would like to know how to use them and train them so that they will aid me instead of confusing me as they do at times. I would like to know how to clarify and concentrate them and how I may put them to their proper use. I know that it is not right to use them in seeking gross material gain for it brings evil effect upon one or at least certainly cause the gift to disappear.

The following are a few of my experiences and you can recognize from them that I have some peculiar force about which I don’t know very much. I was traveling in Vermont in an auto late at night and I had a drowsy sinking feeling that I have come to recognize as the first part of an experience. Suddenly a quiet voice said to me mentally “they are setting one against the other” and I answered audibly “Yes” without consciously realizing what I was saying. The person who was driving asked me what I was saying. He had heard only the one word I had uttered. Another time in the office where I work upon business charts, having frequently experienced the drowsy feeling and also having the reaction that people looking over my shoulder, I just determined this time I would not turn about and find as usual that no one was there. After a second or two of ignoring this presence I had the sensation of some one blowing into my hair and ruffling it up. I still did not pay any attention then I received mentally and very distinctly “You damn fool”. Whenever I go to bed in a strange house invariably some manner of “creatures” come to me. Sometimes they are a bit fearful in their quality and have upon two occasions drawn all the strength or energy from me. Usually they are just interesting or amusing and can be dismissed at command.

The first night I went to bed in a Vermont farm house during a recent stay of a few days, the following was my experience. I got into bed and turned off the light. I felt a sort of bubbling sensation in my chest. It seemed that in order to relax I had to release this force which in turn gave power to something which was coming up the stairs. I did not release it all at once because I did not want the creature to come upon me too suddenly. It finally came and bounded upon the bed and seemed to scamper wildly about with considerable violence. Then I had the sensation of my ear being chewed up. Nothing was visible to me nor do I believe that the covers were indented by the creature in its violent movements. As nearly as I can understand I think the comprehension of these creatures comes through a peculiar perception which is not of the material world and such incidents cause no reaction in matter.

After a while the disturbance ceased and I fell asleep. The next night the same thing happened but a little less violent, and I received the direct sensation of a dog licking my face. The third night the same thing again but the creatures were becoming more distinguishable and I found that it was more than one dog. One of them growled at me and another curled up and lay upon my chest and in so doing drew great quantities of my strength or energy from me. (This is the unpleasant sensation I spoke of a ways back.) I determined to ask the next morning about the dogs that were kept there. I found that there had been a number of English sheep dogs on the place, and the man who had taken care of them was rather cruel in his treatment of them. He had beaten one to death, another had broken its leg and he did not want to be bothered with it and something had happened to a third. The experiences every night grew less and less vigorous until about the sixth night one of the dogs came to the edge of the bed and just sniffed at me and was gone. This sequence would indicate that suddenly terminated life does not finish a creature’s existence on the earth plane although its material form may be destroyed. It also indicates that the force that is within me does not lie within every one or at least not to the same degree or the owner and his wife or his three little children would have felt something.

For the past three years these creatures sometimes in human form, sometimes in animal and other times unintelligible have been presenting them selves to me always through the sense of feeling. I have not seen them. At times they converse with me that is the human ones. I am not at the mercy of these creatures, but to a certain extent I can induce them to come or to repel them. I have found out that they gain power if I lie upon my back with my arms extended outward from my body whereas if I fold them upon my chest they are not empowered to the same extent.

A while ago I learned of certain practises in Yoga utilizing the idea that in the atmosphere there is a certain force upon which the body lives and that this force can be induced into any part of the body by force of the will and muscular effort. Also that this force could be concentrated in the finger tips and injected into the head of another person and produce very interesting effects. This I did applying my finger tips to the forehead and back of head of several different people. The subject sits in the cross legged posture of Buddha with the hands on the knees palms upward. With some people mental pictures or vision was produced that is with the eyes closed, with others it caused a tingling sensation in the fingers and gradually travelled up the arm.

I will describe the mental picture that one of the subjects received. The first time I applied my fingers the girl who was the subject saw a forest of great tall trees which were being chopped down. She said she could even hear the sound of the ax. The second time I applied my fingers she saw the logs being drawn away by a rope. The third time the whole forest was being dismantled and there remained nothing but briar but behind that briar she was aware of a form striving to break through. After several applications of the finger tips the creature did come forth. It was a tall lean stoop-shouldered boy with blond hair who stood watching the logs being drawn away. I produced this visionary quality in several people. Then I stopped for a while, but when I tried it again it had no effect with any one even with the girl who had seen the story I have just written. I don’t know exactly how to regard the loss of this ability to produce vision of symbolic forms.

I could [go] on writing page after page of this sort of thing. What I have written is merely to give you an idea of what comes to me and what I have experienced. I would appreciate it if you would direct me as to my activities and development in these lines. My means are very limited, but of course I would want to pay you for what ever time and trouble you take in advising me. I am looking for something of a definite nature and do not care to waste away my time. I was born May 22, 1910 about 4 P.M. I seem to have the quality ascribed to Gemini of many talents, which is always leading me astray into a new activity before the old one is finished.

I am very skeptical of people here in New York City. There are so many who make quite a living out of gullible people and also others striving for the truth who have not the wit to look beneath the surface. Then there are political bodies (Domestic as well as foreign) who seek and do control movements of research study and understanding of these higher things. Then they go about stirring up the opposition and proceed to set one group of people against the other just as that voice told me in Vermont. It is the most diabolical thing possible. The Dies investigation of UnAmerican activities here scarcely touches the surface of these matters. If I were to tell others of many of the little incidents which make themselves evident every day they would not believe me or certainly that my imagination was carrying me away. These little incidents give evidence of some great ugly influence lying beneath the surface. The average person is not aware of this force, but the individualist who advances himself comes upon it suddenly and either conforms or finds himself blocked in every effort or undertaking. I do hope you don’t have to cope with any such people.

I realize that what I should strive for is to be a constructive force. Dwelling upon these antagonistic thoughts brings one into a state of negative of negative value. That is what I seek and I would greatly appreciate it if you can point out or direct me to that goal.

Have yours of the 29th - and it is most interesting - thank you for writing me, and sincerely trust may be of some service in directing you in a way that the powers with you may be directed - or you directed in channels that may bring joy and usefulness to you as well as to your fellow man - am enclosing a booklet that will tell you of my experiences - and the direction they have taken - they may be of interest. I know so little - wonder if have the right to try and direct any one - but will be glad to work with you - and give of that of me that may help you.

Would suggest in as much as my Son Hugh Lynn Cayce is in N.Y. that you get in touch with him - talk the matters over as you have written me, and am sure you will find a sympathetic ear

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Your talk at the McAlpin Hotel in New York City was a revelation to a great many people including myself. Your gift is of such astonishing quality that, despite many people’s descriptions of your mild affable yet Godly and understanding character, one has the feeling, until they meet you and hear you express yourself in the very whole-hearted manner that you do, that you might be one of the great characters of the Old Testament who has stepped down from the pages of that book into every day life. Possibly a man whose glance contains the quality of extraordinary intelligence and perception which would make one uneasy. How completely different was the effect or rather the response that you drew from all of us. I thought - “There is a friend of mankind”.

So seldom does one meet in New York a personality that carries the atmosphere that you do. It was like a light breeze blowing off the ocean in the morning of a clear day when the sunlight dances on the surface of the water. I would have liked it if you could have spoken much longer.

You were kind indeed to ask me to see you the next day. I am sorry that I did not convey or express my thoughts to you better than I did, but that does not surprise me, for so often I blunder about unless there is sufficient time my expressions are rather obtuse. To the contrary, when I write I do manage to express myself with a much greater degree of clarity.

I like so many others have certain ideas, clear and very definitely arranged in my mind, but when I try to express them verbally, especially in a limited time, I manage to present them in so confused an order that lose the order of my ideas in my haste and cause the other person to wonder if I know exactly what I am talking about.

Thus, I am asking your help not for myself alone, but for all of mankind who will accept your assistance. I am certain that you, who through goodness of heart, has been given the liberty of the library of divine intelligence can do this thing I ask. Give me the means of understanding others thoughts as they express them to me, not in the translated audible stage but in their initial stage of idea form. Regardless of whether your first reaction to this is that you may think I am asking you to become the divinity itself, inquire through your gift for what I ask, develop it among your associates at Virginia Beach and then give it to the whole world.

Science has long complained that the mechanical devices and developments have far outstripped the human capacity to keep up with them mentally. You would have hesitated coming to New York, if you had to take three days traveling by stage coach and three more going back again, yet you had great patience in waiting for your audience to adjust themselves to the open-hearted manner of expressing yourself. There are so used to witty after-dinner speeches and a business man’s manner of speaking, that when you spoke it was a certain degree another language.

While waiting to see you the next day, I sat in the room with Hugh and Dr. Hardwicke [Henry S. W. Hardwicke, M.D.] and your son remarked that you had meant to mention several other things, but for lack of time you did not do so. Dr. Hardwicke’s comment was that you should have dismissed your audience at that time, when you asked whether you should continue and the enthusiasm was intense. Now then you had the ability to throw our ideas mentally and they [had] the ability to receive your ideas you could have accomplished three times as much thought transference as is possible to accomplish verbally in the same amount of time. The Greeks brought their civilization up to such a height that their orators could by merely quoting a few words of certain sections of their literature create in the audience’s minds the idea that they wished to convey.

We nowadays have not generally attained to the heighth of intelligence or education that was prevalent in Greek civilization. We have advanced in a different direction but there is no reason why we cannot do for the mind the same that we have done for the body in the invention of the automobile, and other devices.

This is the basis for my belief that every one has the capacity for receiving and sending thought in its idea form:-

1. To begin with science has measured the impulse of thought and find it to be series of electrical waves which can be compared with the broadcast waves from a radio station, but of a different quality.
2. It has been so frequently demonstrated as to almost prove that the brain has the capacity of receiving others’ thoughts but one cannot deliberately sit down, concentrate upon another and know exactly what his thoughts are. In other words, the faculty is not under the control of the will but - it is nevertheless there.
3. Now then, we know that if physical parts in us remain unused many generations they become smaller and the will has less and less control over them. The same is true, I am sure, of our mental faculties. You know, of course, certain very sensitive people possess the ability to read others’ minds to an astonishing degree of accuracy. They don’t know how exactly they do it, but nevertheless it is done.
4. I ask you then for the benefit of mankind, will you have a reading on the manner of stimulating the mental faculty of transmission and reception of thought either in inaudible word form or better in idea form.

As you know from my letter to you, I have had inaudible voices speak to me with great clarity upon several occasions and I have received impressions of ideas very distinctly knowing the details of the idea without any words mentally expressed.

The following are my reasons for the value of awakening the capacity of thought transmission and reception in mankind:-

Everyone would find that they would eliminate much of their sloppy thinking (just as if we were all to go around naked we would do something to take off ugly protruding stomachs and slouchy postures). We could not be hypocritical, our statesmen and politicians would not be the type of men that they are now. They could not so deceive the public with grand promises, which are merely a means of gaining popularity. Deceptions of all sorts would be made completely transparent. Thus, many of our unworthy qualities through necessity would cease to exist (how often has necessity roused us from bad habits we have drifted into).

The good qualities are far more numerous and of tremendous value: - A great gateway of expression will be opened up for us. How often have you let something pass unexpressed for the various reasons that the explaining of the idea would take too long, the persons to whom you might explain the idea would not have the patience to listen or the time too short to effectively and convincingly explain the matter? Had you the ability to clearly give the full impression with all the clarity that existed in your mind you would have done it and the other person would have been so stimulated with your own enthusiasm which you would also transfer to them that undoubtedly both of you would have set to at once and crystalized that idea into materialized form. Instead you sit idly by, bored and feeling that it was not worth the effort of long explanations and possibly the misunderstandings which give rise to so much impatience and unfriendliness that exists between people who do not deliberately try of to over come them. I know with myself working in a brokerage office (something I don’t much enjoy) when the boss quickly explains about certain things he wants done and his words do not register very well, the confusion I go through trying to sort of feel out what he wants done is very unpleasant. If I don’t get the idea and have to ask over again his reaction is “how stupid, we ought to get someone that is more efficient”. I am not stupid yet through my schooling I often seemed to lag behind and try as I might I could not get the information out of lectures such as the other boys got.

I have qualities of creative thought and of leadership but through inadequate expression they do not have their effect that they might. How many of the hidden talents would be brought to the surface and utilized had individuals a facile means of expressing them correctly? How much would mankind benefit as the result of this acceleration of thought? The simile between the stage coach and the railway, automobile or airplane and the mind with the limitations of audible vocabularies or written ones and the freedom of released thought forms is identical and is in my mind thoroughly possible.

I hesitate to express two other ideas that I know are just as capable of being accomplished as that which I have suggested but through fear of detracting from this one thing I will now write of them. One was a device that Thomas Edison was working upon when he died and many other people have tried. It is a means of convincing people of the presence of “the cloud of witnesses that surround us” and which the majority of the world, I am afraid, is inclined to doubt.

If this request does rouse your interest to the point where you will venture a reading upon it, I know you will let me know the result. I will want a personal reading after the holidays. Unfortunately, my pocketbook has definite limitations, so I am obliged to wait.

I hope you will take readings on this idea, develop it among your associates as I have suggested and then give it to all mankind. I imagine that the means of awakening these qualities will take the form of a radio or other electrical device, which will be used for a short time, just long enough to “shake off the cobwebs”. One things of importance - this faculty must be under the control of the will just as the other qualities are that we utilize daily. It would not do to open ourselves up to something over which we have no control. (As an example there have been a number of people who, living near radio broadcasting stations, actually get the programs in their heads and have no control over them). I suggest that the idea of the will dominating be a part of the suggestion for the reading.

I am enclosing another paper of my idea on the subject [See below]. It might be completely incorrect but I know with the guidance that you so fortunately possess the way will be open to you.

[enclosed paper:] The mind may be compared to a great city in which our conscious being knows through constant use, the location of the sending station of thought, but through lack of use, the majority of the population has never discovered the receiving station.

This receiving station can be thought of as a building located up some blind alley, and, because of our lack of knowledge of this location, we very rarely consciously become aware of it; and it lies disused covered with cobwebs, as one might say.

In that we have used electrical device for the transmission of voice over wire and without wire, is it not conceivable and logical to now set about devising an instrument which will give amplification to thought which is electrical in its quality; or devise an instrument which would receive the electrical impulse of thought and amplify it to such an extent that it would, when placed in direct contact with a human being’s mind, would send illumination into that building up of the blind alley, so that we may follow its light directly there, and through dint of repetition, bring into our conscious minds the location of this building? Using this instrument of empowered thought perception, and using it frequently we awaken an awareness which has long been dormant.

With persons of more advance perceptions, this awareness will rapidly become part of their consciousness, and after a certain length of time, they can put aside this electrical aid, having found out the location of the receiving station of thought.

I feel certain that this receiving station is within everyone’s mind, and the reception of electrical force of thought is within the scope of possibility for everyone, and merely varies in degree with the mental qualities of the individual.

B4. 12/12/38 EC’s letter to [1962]:

Dear Mr. [1962]:

Have yours of the 9th - and thank you for same - had I not had a certain experience, a few weeks before your first letter don’t think would have understood you at all. But did and fully in my own mind know what a bother you have had in former experience.

It was wonderful to have the opportunity to meet you - and thanks to HIM. I am thoroughly convinced you have a great work to do, here - now - but will have to receive yourself - possibly as did Moses the direction no one can do that part for you - they may suggest - but as to directing - never - that must only come from within. But know this will be glad to help - work with you - make suggestions with you - at any and all times the message you suggest be given by me is your own - no one may do it quite so well as yourself - will you but prepare your self for same. Let me offer this Mr. [1962] as a suggestion - do not listen at others - or even read so much of their words - take the Old Book - read it - make those promises there your own - and does HE wish you to use you He will and if not - then you would not even wish to give a message - possibly that is where I am one sided for as you could easily see I never had a material education and do not possibly appreciate it as should - but I read and understand how that Moses had all there was of the day - yet must take the 40 years to unlearn it all to be able to say - “Know O Israel - the Lord thy God is one” which is the whole truth for us today - in every sense of the word - and when we attempt to give - or put the stress some where else - we become idol worshipers no matter what name we may have for them - Know that old Book - for the one reason - it is life, LIFE, and Life is a manifestation of that we call GOD no matter what its form - and as Mr. Whitney of the Gen. Elec. said some years ago - “What ever electricity is - God is” so the emotions are electrical but as the systems - must be directed - coordinate as the static nature is to be useful in man’s physical experience - uncontrolled is death - used - harnessed - directed - life giving in its self.

Would be happy to try and get such a message to you - but it is yours - as said above - and you can give better than I - I thank you for the kind thing you said about my attempt to talk, only of the abundance of the heart can I speak. Have nothing new - that I know of - and most of all of my self can do nothing - only as the Father may work in me.

And would not if knew it hear the voice that would lead some other way.

Do hope may very soon have the opportunity to talk with you again feel very very much drawn to you - and am anxious to know what the information has to say about you from a LIFE reading.

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.

My dear Mr. Cayce,

I thought you might be interested in a form of vision that a number of people may attain without any of the ill effects of the development of mediumship which so often get beyond control or make the person impractical in the commercial world. This vision is quite simple and ceases just as quickly as the contacts are broken - just as an electrical light bulb will go out when removed from its socket.

The crystal vision as I call it came to me as the result of several things Dr. Hardwicke spoke of during his lectures and at other times. One remark in particular was that life as we know it is the result of a shaft of energy coming in contact with substance and vitalizing it.

I have always been going to ask you to give me a life reading ever since your last talk at the Hotel McAlpin this past winter. The financial factor has made it difficult, and instead of getting better it has become worse as I guess it has with a great many other people. I am that person who wrote you about the experience with the etherical forms of the dogs in a Vermont farmhouse should you happen to remember.

Many different instructions have come to me by the higher forces which have given me an assurance and serenity in the knowledge that I will one day attain to a place in the higher spheres.

Unfortunately, I am not able to accomplish this crystal vision myself, so instead I have given it to others who do have the power and who I find are totally unaware of that power. These people are for the most part artists or writers who have creative instincts. You can readily see the value and the influence upon the public if their words are directly and consciously influenced from the higher spheres provided they contact forces of light.

One vision which might particularly interest you was as follows:- A pianist, a friend of mine, saw water with spheres of light above its surface. I told him to go up to the water and stir it with him hand. As he did so the water responded saying, “don’t do that!” I am capable of both good and evil influences.” I then told him to ask what was the significance of the spheres of light above the water, and the response was, “that is not for mankind to know yet”. The water warned him not to go near a large body of water this summer and informed me through him that if I were to stay near a large body of fresh water this summer I would find out the significance of water. I asked for further details but it merely persisted with the same answer.

Try this form of vision yourself and give it freely to others if you will. I believe that every one should be equipped with the means of spiritual attainment just as scientists make use of improvements in their instruments which come out frequently to further the success of their endeavors.

I have been working on an idea of a novelty such as the Ouija board but which will operate with the electrical force of the body and not the physical contact in which lies the skeptic’s doubts as to the truth of the device. It does not work yet, but I may be able to find a way. It is by such simple things that the lesser mind may become consciously aware of the presence of the higher forces. I am not much inclined to the idea that the lesser mind should remain in ignorance and be directed by a strict faith which gives no evidence of the reason underlying it. The tendency is now toward intelligence and fact. Faith follows afterwards. It is a characteristic of the East to neglect the intellect and stress the faith. The West is inclined to loose itself in the material creations of the intellect. Do you not agree that the greatest value is to consciously know and understand all that the world has to offer, that is, as much as it is possible to comprehend to be used as a step or elevation from which one may step higher. A means and not an end.

Some one to whom I had given the crystal vision just called me up and told me something of what he saw. The scene was a grey waste land which was terraced and in the distance a figure appeared and continued to walk directly toward the boy who was taking the vision until he was about fifty feet away when he stopped. The boy asked, “what is your name?” - There was no answer. He then asked what do you want and the figure answered, “your destiny lies with me”. The scene then faded away. The man was dressed in a costume of about the time of Kubla Khan. Tight fitting around the throat chest and arms but with a full skirt. A gold chain with a key hung around the neck and the feet were bare with sandals on. The face was hidden by a cloud.

I would be interested in knowing how you react to this crystal vision and what you think of giving it to others.

THE CRYSTAL VISION

The following is a technique of an extraordinary form of vision as completely as I have been able to conceive it:-

Lie on your back your head pointing to the magnetic north or your body parallel to a stream of flowing water. Be careful not to ground yourself by touching metal. The best insulator is a woolen blanket.

Place small pillows or other supports beneath your elbows so that they will be supported and will require no thought or muscular tension holding them in place.

Hold a sphere of glass, crystal or celluloid of about one and one quarter inches in diameter with the tips of the third and fourth fingers in each hand. (These two fingers of each hand should be together and not separated so that when they hold the sphere the subtle charge of electricity will penetrate from opposite sides.)

The little or fifth finger is placed on the closed eyes directly over the pupils. The index finger is placed high on the forehead or into the hair.

The thumb closes off the hearing by pressing in the little tabs of the front part of the ear which lie directly over the channel of the ear. If this is difficult just put the thumbs into the ears.

Assume the position with as much ease as possible. Tension or strain will detract from the success of the experiment. The reason or explanation of this vision is as follows:- Hearing, vision and thought have been proven to be electrical by various experiments of professors at Yale, Southern California and N.Y. University. These senses or abilities are like the roots of a tree stretching out and covering a considerable area. If all the loose ends are gathered up into one point naturally their combined or concentrated forces are powerful.

The third eye, an etherical and not material organ, lies in the center of the forehead or just a bit out from the center. (It is frequently represented in the statues of the oriental gods.)

The sphere of glass held in front of the forehead is two things in one. It is a material representation of an etherical organ, and as we are largely dominated by the material there must exist some form of matter that will bridge the gap for our material senses.

The sphere of glass is also a resistor similar to the bit of tungsten wire in the electric light bulb which resists the flow of electricity slowing it down to the numerical vibration of light. (The subtle charge of body electricity seems to be capable of penetrating anything so that the glass acts as a resistor instead of an insulator as it does with voltage) It merely slows down the body charge and the “eye” becomes vitalized or lit and is capable of the extraordinary vision.

When you attain the vision and find yourself in another world, you will find that you can explore at will. When you see something or some person you can approach it or him and mentally ask the reason for their being. You will receive the answer or if it is something you should not know you will be told so directly. Many times an answer will require much thought. It is best to have [someone] sit by you who will listen quietly to your description of the vision. During the vision the memory does not seem to function as accurately as at other times. The other person can help by directing the questions so that you act merely as the means of perceiving and will not be divided by having to think up the questions and of perception at the same time. If you want to do so write your questions down first and then contact your source of intelligence.

Usually one finds they can accomplish this perception at once or can’t do it at all. It seems to require the type of individual through whom there flows some form of creative force. It is generally the artist type or writer. If you find that you cannot attain the vision then approach some other individual who has a flow of creative energies, and if they are willing to experiment, ask your questions through them.

Do not keep this information a secret but be very careful of giving it to persons of destructive tendencies who by force of evil influences urging them might use it destructively. Remember there is what is called the law of Karma or cause and effect. If you set a force in action by releasing it to others you are responsible and share int he good or evil created by the action. You are the channel through which the waters will flow and it depends upon the choice of the individual using the force what kind of water will be drawn through that channel.

Be careful. Wait for the quiet or silent urges inside of you before venture. You will find they lead you to the right path.

B6. 6/23/39 EC’s letter to [1962]:

Dear Mr. [1962]:

Have thought of you a great many times since meeting you in N.Y. and had wondered what you have been doing - then yours of the 21st.

Your formula for self-hypnosis or partial to me is most interesting will try it out for myself before giving it to any one else, and then if works will pass it on and let you know the results. Personally - while this may be just the state in which I am supposed to be working - I lose consciousness. Whether it would be preferable to remain conscious or not do not know. From what have been able to see consciously - personally am too easily tempted to misuse the what I see. I have deemed that the powers that be - have seen fit for me to work in the unconscious state, but will try out some experiments with your suggestion and let you know my own experience with this.

Wish you might have been with us at the recent Congress - it closed last Sunday evening, had quite a nice attendance at each meeting - fine interest shown - and some very nice addresses - one especially by a scientist.

Hope you can arrange soon to have your reading if you wish it

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Things have come to a point where I must know how and in what direction to throw my efforts. The uncertainty that has existed for a year or more and my distaste for my present occupation backed up by very definite demonstrations of my consciousness which seems to “evaporate” every once in a while during my work and a voice that tried to attract my attention during these hours and when I did not respond in disgust remarked very distinctly “you damn fool” - has all pretty well indicated to me that there is something else I should be doing. As I cannot solve this problem myself at the present time with the little horizon and perception I may possess I am asking you to please do this for me. Please give me as direct a guidance as you will. I am most certainly in need of it.

I am enclosing a money order for fifteen dollars. If you would be so kind to allow me, I will send the other five within the next two weeks. The circumstances are such that I could not at present take any more from my pay than I have.

Will you please set the date by return mail for sometime after 7:00 P.M. on a week day evening of next week from the 3rd to the 7th of next week - July.

Not knowing what your schedule may be it is better for you to tell me than I - you.

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

I was reading Manly Hall’s “Lectures on Ancient Philosophy” and came across the following bit which expresses the idea I was striving for in my letter to you yesterday.

“We should never concentrate upon any desired end until discrimination has revealed it to be the supreme ideal; for the universe avenges itself for the misuse of its agencies by forcing us to abide by our own decisions.”

I do not possess that discrimination to a degree wherein it is sufficient to solve my present problem.

I must have a material return for what I do which will take care of my brother, sister and myself yet I do not want to spend my life being a negative. I am certain that things have arrived at a turning point where a sheltered or protected past is coming to an end and what I do now is almost entirely up to myself; naturally I don’t want to make a wrong move so please direct me specifically.

I meant to say in my letter yesterday that I would be in my bedroom on those evenings of next week but let me know first. I feel certain that you can speak to me if you desire. I have heard so many other people’s voices even the boy’s voice who sits next to me in the office.

Note: This young man has had varying psychic experiences in which disincarnate animals and human beings have drawn force from his body for expression. Evidently his glands are unbalanced and need synchronizing. His imagination is also stimulated to cause him to hear things said to other people that he thinks apply to him, such as words that he is thinking. Try to clear these up for him and get meditation and explanation that will prevent mental inroads. He might easily be on the way to an asylum. (He says he will mail application within a week or so.
