Born January 28, 1899, in Marshalltown, Iowa. Time of Reading 10:50 to 11:15 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York, N.Y.

1. GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, and that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions which may be submitted, as I ask them:

2. EC: (In going back over the years from present - ” - ‘32 - serious changes - ‘26 - other changes of different nature - ” etc., on back to birth date.)

3. Yes, we have the entity here, and those records of that entity known as or called [1971].

4. In giving the interpretations of the records as we find them here, the desires on the part of the entity bring about rather a confusion in the intent to interpret same.

5. Know rather that such information is to give the individual the awareness of those channels or activities in which greater harmony, greater contentment may come.

6. These are not necessarily always easy. For each soul is constantly meeting itself and those activities in its relationships to others in any given experience.

7. Know, then, that these are chosen with the desire to make the experience a helpful, hopeful one; giving the faults and the virtues in such a way and manner that the entity, through choice within its own consciousness, may apply those things that have had and do have more to do with the Creative or Spiritual Force within its experience.

8. For the material, at best, is only temporal, or temporary, while that which may be builded from spiritual desire, spiritual purposes, is eternal.

9. Only good lives on. Evil, bad and indifference must be met in their OWN environ, their OWN experience; and thus one grows in grace, in knowledge, in understanding.

10. For, though there may be those experiences that bring harsh reverberations, these may be tempered in such a way and manner - through the grace that is granted or given to which each soul is heir in the love which has been manifested in the Ideal - that the peace as He gives may be the individual experience.

11. Thus we find how patience is as the gateway to the more perfect law of love that is shown in Him.

12. In giving those things from the astrological aspects, we find these coming under rather the headstrong urges. Not too temperamental is the individual entity, yet very set in the ways - as may be said - at times; and very easily discouraged at times, as will be seen by not only the astrological aspects but form the purely material sojourns.

13. Hence the first injunction would be, - Find within self what is thy desire and purpose. Not merely material, - for the material things and material positions should be the outgrowth, the result; and not the whole purpose of an experience.

14. For they that love Him have the promise that they SHALL be clothed, they SHALL not want for food nor sustenance of the body.

15. Then, these supplied - as they may be in the experience - there should be a greater desire to so live that ye may constrain those whom ye meet day by day to glorify Him; not by precept alone, not by merely laudation, but by example; sowing those things in thy life that are as the fruits of the spirit, - faith, hope, love, kindness, gentleness, patience, brotherly love. And if ye have these, ye are secure and safe in the promises of Him, - who IS the Prince of Peace, - not of the world as the world knows the world, but He that OVERCAME the world! And so may ye overcome the world - in His promises.

16. From the astrological aspects of the headstrong nature we find Mercury, Venus, both in the adverse as well as in the beneficient influences.

17. Hence a natural artistic temperament; love of the beautiful, especially of the out of doors, of nature, of natural things.

18. High-minded mentally; and those things that would have to do with newness of activity yet OLD in their endurance.

19. Thus, with the combination of the urges from the astrological and material sojourns, we find rather a very DEFINITE character of work indicated, and yet that which may be said to be unusual.

20. As a datastician, then, in those places, environs, conditions that are as national shrines or national parks or the like; and especially - if the entity would make the approach through the channels in which the entity HAS acted, is acting - as a secretary pertaining to activities about the national parks in Kentucky - or Mammouth Cave.

21. In these activities the entity may find harmony and peace, and eventually build again - in this experience - a way, a home that will be rather of the nature to bring again the consciousness of true love, - material, mental and spiritual, - within the experience of the entity.

22. As to the appearances in the earth, these we find quite varied, - not a great many but some very definite ones that bring the urges latent and manifested in the present experience:

23. Before this we find the entity was in the French land during those periods when there was the stirring up of what was known as the French Revolution.

24. There we find the entity was among the mothers who aided in arousing the laity or the working people to resentment at the manner of those in authority.

25. The name then was Rene Wentwerth. In the experience the entity gained, the entity lost. The ideals as for the universality of labor, of help, of a purpose, were well. But once attained, such became a stumblingblock to the entity - for it became as dictatorial as those who had previously been in authority in the same place and position.

26. Hence we will find throughout the present experience it has been necessary for the entity to take orders from others, as well as to subjugate much of that which seeks expression.

27. As indicated, the entity becomes easily disturbed, - but know that in patience ye understand and possess thy soul.

28. Before that we find the entity was in the Egyptian land during those periods when there were the activities of the Egyptian prince or princess with the rulers of the Roman force.

29. The entity then was among those who were ladies in waiting; and thus was aware of much of the intrigue as well as of the activities of the peoples who were in authority in both eras and ages of that particular period of activity, - whether of the Caesars or of the lover that later became such a stumblingblock to the whole experience.

30. There we find the entity gained and lost again through the very desires to make overtures in the various positions; which brought temperamental activities, yet a desire and the ability in those directions of keeping account or keeping records of new events, new findings, new developments.

31. And the abilities to keep records for a national service or park, - these arise from such an experience, as well as from other experiences that are indicated.

32. Then name then was Shelen.

33. Before that we find the entity was in the land now known as the Persian or Arabian, in those periods when there was the ‘city in the hills and the plains.’

34. And there we find the entity was among the natives who were co-related with the activities of the leader, or Uhjltd, in that experience.

35. The entity took up the various records for that activity in which the peoples of various lands used the ‘city in the hills and the plains’ as a place for storage, or a place for a center of exchange between the Far East and the Persian, as well as the Egyptian and the Carpathian and the Grecian lands, - or the East and the West of that experience.

36. There the entity gained throughout; for with the activities, because of the purposes and desires for the general good of all, there was brought a great deal of help and aid.

37. From that activity we find again the abilities to act in those capacities in which new fields of service, new findings, things both new and old, become a part of the experience and activity.

38. So may the entity in the present, in those activities as indicated, find not only a means for bringing harmony in the material things but a means for aiding in the mental and spiritual progress also.

39. Before that we find the entity was in the Egyptian land during those periods when individuals were chosen for special service.

40. There we find the entity acted in the capacity of one that was a decorator, - interior decorator; painting with gold and lacquer and the activities in which the coffins as well as the various rooms were builded.

41. Hence we find an interest in such; and these would stand the entity in good stead when there is the application of self in those fields as we have indicated.

42. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, then, and that to which it may attain:

43. First, know thyself and thy ideals.

44. Then, through those channels as indicated there may come those environs in which greater opportunities and greater blessings may be thine, - provided these are kept ever with Him as the guide, - who has promised to abide with thee always.

45. Then, abide with Him.

46. Ready for questions.

47. (Q) Is there anything I can do in preparation for this opportunity, or just wait for same? (A) As has been indicated, - through the same channels this may be made known, to be sure; and seek out, - but in these specific places.

R1. 7/31/39 [1971]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I sent a money order today from downtown and when I returned to my abode found your reading. Presume time alone can tell just how much service it will be to me and even tho at present there seems NO way in which to follow up part of the content, it may occur to me later and I shall be glad to report to you (if you like) in that event.

Before becoming one of the many W.P.A. employees I held but three positions and do not have the address of two employers and the third is too high up in Washington at present to bother with me, (I have written him twice with no result), so!

Also I always wonder if the majority of people learn certain things, if they won’t resent my position. For that reason I am more or less alone always.

My next money order will be sent to you in two weeks as promised even tho I’m working but two days this week. It is to be hoped that my present job will last a while longer so that I may feed and clothe the two of us [self & daughter].

R2. 9/14/39 [1971]‘s letter to EC:

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I have been unable to answer your letter of Aug 29 before as I had to give up my abode, store my furniture and am now looking for work.

It is a little difficult to state just wherein lies the difficulty with the reading but in the instance of a removal to Kentucky, which you specifically mention, it seems very improbable if not impossible. As I understand it, Mammouth Cave is either State or Federal and most likely all employees are Civil Service which means they must live in that state a year or six months, then take the examination for appointment. It so happens that right now I couldn’t even take a one-way trip to Ky. and would have nothing to live on for the required time. The plan just doesn’t sound practical to me right now. Neither have I anyone to whom to go for recommendation for such a position.

I would just as soon leave N.Y. if there were a spot elsewhere but surely can’t gamble quite that much at the present time. I haven’t only myself to think of, you know.

They tell me at the agencies the requirement for office workers is 28 and under. By no stretch of the imagination could I pass for that age and I’ve never lied about my age, and surely don’t want to start. As a lot of Aquarians I’m not “specialized” to a great degree but can do many things. Also in these days of strife lack of a college degree is a great handicap.

Your statement that I easily become discouraged is right. Feel that if I were with people more (outside of business) things would be better but it so happens that for the past ten years I’ve been mostly alone - no one to talk to.

I’ll probably survive one way or another but the time seems interminable.

From the meeting I attended at the McAlpin when you were in N.Y., I feel that you do and have done great things for people - especially the sick, but my health is all right and so I thought a vocational reading might prove beneficial.

Perhaps it would be wrong of me to tell the thing I desire most in the world and perhaps I shall never attain that desire. Right now things are at sixes and sevens and I see thru colored glasses but SURELY if I’m on this earth there is some reason for my being here!

If you can think of any encouragement, shall be very grateful. However out of the hundreds of people you serve I am but a very small entity and I wouldn’t expect to take up your time. At any rate, Mr. Cayce, believe that I do not censor - the fault is probably mine. If I just knew how to get out of the rut!!

R3. 9/18/39 EC’s letter to [1971]

Dear Mrs. [1971]:

Have yours of the 14th. Thank you, am sorry that you have had to change all about. Sincerely hope very soon you will be able to find just that as is in keeping with your best development in every way.

Felt there was some special reason why the information was so specific as to place and kind of work. Possibly I do not understand that as necessary for preparation of such a place, but was of the opinion that it would scarcely be more than your making application in the right direction, as to whether such places are under the Civil Services or not do not know. But am sure you have looked into the matter and don’t blame you from [for?] being very much disappointed.

Please know can we be of help in any way am glad to try and do so. Have and do feel a special interest in your undertaking, and would like to help if possible, should any thing arise where we might help please let us know.

R4. 2/29/40 [1971]‘s letter to EC:

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Assn for Res. & Enlightenment Virginia Beach, Va.

My dear Mr. Cayce:

Will you please change my address on your records from … Street N.Y.C. to the one at the heading of this letter?

After three months of no work, no income and having to sell most of my choice possessions, I had to take a job “in service.” Of course this was entirely foreign to anything I had done previously and I’m finding it very confining. Have absolutely no way of meeting or contacting people, and miss those contacts.

If there is any way for you to ascertain whether I shall be in this kind of work very long, would be very grateful. I’m indeed anxious to get into a home of my own but suppose that is too much to hope for.

I note in your October 1939 bulletin you will request reports on the most recent readings.

After finally making application for a position at the place in Kentucky which showed up in my reading, the manager informed me that the position would be for a season only and as I had absolutely no friends with which to travel or to take care of me nine months of the year, I couldn’t even consider such a position.

Believe I told you I was terribly disappointed in my reading as I seemed no better off than before. I would very much like to know if possible, if my lot might change for the better and if my one desire may be accomplished.

Dear Mrs. [1971]

Thanks for yours of the 29th, will be glad to change the address. Sorry to know conditions have been so unpleasant for you. Trust however conditions will improve more than you can even imagine at present. Wish you had let me know when you made the application about place in Ky, might have been of some help. That is my old home - and am acquainted with some of those in charge.

Your present place of residence isn’t far from where we will probably be when come to N.Y. this spring, and will expect to see you and talk with you then.

If you will make a list of questions on the things that you would like to know something about at this time, will try and make an appointment and see can we be of help, for our whole desire is to help I assure you, and am so sorry you were so badly disappointed in what you got in your reading.

R6. 3/23/40 [1971]‘s letter to EC:

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I was very glad to receive the announcement that you are to be in Bronxville from April 8 to 20.

While there are probably many people who need your help more than I, would certainly welcome your giving me a little time on Wednesday the 10th or Wednesday the 17. My job now is such that I have no other day. Would prefer afternoon.

Do I understand these are included in the $20. membership fee?

Dear Mrs. [1971]:

Have yours of the 23rd. Am reserving a time for you Wed. afternoon the 10th. Didn’t quite understand do you wish a reading at that time or to go over one you have had. Be sure and let me know about this - as will then tell you just what time that afternoon will expect you. Of course there is no contribution to go over your reading with you.

R8. 3/29/40 [1971]‘s letter to EC:

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach Va.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I’m not interested in going over my former reading because it is entirely impossible for me to make a move to Kentucky

• especially in view of the fact that a job is but seasonal. Neither do I care anything about former incarnations. What I would really like to know is - where is my particular niche in this life and whether I shall soon find it or go on as I have been the past ten years just existing - doing neither myself or anyone else, apparently, any good.

I feel I MUST begin to get somewhere. I must look forward to some kind of remunerative job in order to take care of existing obligations.

Also I’m very desirous of knowing, if possible, if I shall have a home of my own and find any kind of happiness.

Am alone all the time now with but part of a day to make any contacts. I feel greatly the need of some kind of companionship. If you can help me in any way, I shall indeed be grateful.

About what time the tenth shall I save?

Mr. H. L. Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I presume you are back at Virginia Beach and if there is anything you can glean from my reading that I’ve been unable to see, certainly wish you’d advise me. In looking it over again, it seems very plainly worded and understandable but as I told you and your father, there is nothing contained therein that I can follow. I had so hoped there might be some hope of my getting out of this rut.

R11. 5/22/40 [1971]‘s letter to HLC:

Mr. Hugh Lynn Cayce Assn. for Research & Enlightenment Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Please excuse my negligence in not acknowledging your letter before. We’ve had the painters and I’ve not had a moment to do a thing for myself.

You asked me about the years 1926 and 1932. I haven’t been able to place anything OUTSTANDING in either of these years.

You mention my being “very set in my way” - I don’t know exactly what is meant by that for I’ve certainly had to adapt myself to changing conditions and have “changed horses midstream” as it were. I may be SET but not extremely so as indicted by the reading and certainly at my age one wouldn’t expect frivolity. Neither do I think I am “easily” discouraged. True I am when the time has come that I had no money to pay rent or eat but I don’t call that EASILY discouraged.

The definite suggestion regarding my work would seem excellent if I were free to take advantage of them. Believe I told you and your father that I wouldn’t have the money to travel anywhere if I did have a position offered and it seems absolutely impossible to leave my daughter so far from me and more impossible to take her with me until I would be settled. If - later on - I feel that I can leave her, I would try to avail myself of the opportunity to follow your father’s suggestions even tho I don’t know any one who could recommend me to such a post. I can think of no one I have ever known who either lives or has lived in Kentucky.

I realize I have many faults but also have a duty to perform and it appears best (to me) to try to take care of that duty before I try for happiness for myself. Possibly I will never achieve what I would like to and what I should for my “karma” but I can’t run away at present.

Thank you, anyway, very much for your letter. I am glad for your father and for others that their readings could be followed. I seem to be the only exception.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Some little time ago you sent me literature pertaining to your reading and how they might be attained. I am particularly interested in securing a life reading but up to the moment have been unable to send $20. for membership in the Association.

For some time I have been unable to secure private employment and have been employed by the Work Progress Administration and now that Congress has passed the law furloughing us for thirty days am doubly anxious to have a reading, hoping by it to adjust my life so that I may find employment and will not have to accept direct “charity.” Would it be possible for you to accept half the fee now and half later and give a reading in the meantime?

Knowing of your past successes I’m quite sure you can put me on the right path.

I hope I’m not asking too much.

Have yours of the 9th. Sincerely hope we may be of a real service to you. Please know, Mrs. [1971], this is not just a money seeking organization. Of course we have to have same to live and this is our source of supply, but will be glad to try and be of a service. Fill out the enclosed blank and make the payments to suit your self.

Am sure the Life reading is what you wish, as you wish to know possibly, what you are best fitted for. Just hope we may be of a real service.

B3. 7/14/39 [1971]‘s letter to EC:

Mr. Edgar Cayce Assn for Research & Enlightenment, Inc. Virginia Beach, Va.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Your very kind letter of the 12th was received and I thank you sincerely for it.

I did not fully complete the blank you enclosed as my occupation or position is not at all certain. I might say that my business career started as a secretary stenographer at which I made a very good salary; then almost a calamity occurred and since that time I have done clerical work, legal research, etc etc. No job that has been given me to do have I fallen down on but I, along with many others throughout the country will evidently fall under the recent law passed by Congress unless it is altered or unless they feel I am “indispensable” to the work. That would seem almost too good to be true and I am trying to plan ahead a little.

If it is possible, would be especially interested in business as I have found people do not want to hire persons who have worked on W.P.A.

The thing I wish MOST to do may or may not occur and may or may not appear in the reading although I’m hoping it will.

I notice you state “appointments for readings” - I understood when you were here in New York at the McAlpin Hotel that the information would be secured by mail and a personal appointment is not necessary., I could not, of course, afford a trip to Virginia so hope I’m right in my understanding.

Perhaps you’d rather not have known anything about me but I felt it might help you to understand my present predicament. I shall certainly look forward eagerly to your help which I know will benefit me.
