This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 2nd day of December, 1939, in accordance with request made by the parents, Mr. [2385] and Mrs. [2336], through Mrs. [1523].

Born August 7, 1937, in Pittsburgh, Penna. Time of Reading 4:10 to 4:50 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Va.

1. HLC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, and that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions which may be submitted, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the entity here, and those records that are a part of the entity’s experience through the earth’s plane, as well as through those interims of sojourn in the environs about the earth.

3. In giving the interpretations of these records, these are chosen with the desire and purpose that this may be helpful to those guiding the development of the entity’s abilities through the formative years, - in choosing that channel through which the entity may gain the greater concept in its spiritual, mental and material manifestations.

4. As indicated here, the entity has accomplished much in varied manners, and in varied ways, through sojourns. While, according to judgments as might be passed in the present, the activities might not have been such as to constitute what man’s knowledge would consider a great soul’s activity, we find that the abilities in the present may be directed in such ways and measures that much may be gained.

5. Much of that which was the experience of the entity in the earthly sojourn before this should be adhered to, in the signs or symbols. Not that there should be the attempt to force the entity into activities in any direction where there is not an answering cause or purpose from within, yet with the awareness of these abilities there may be brought the awareness of much in those directions during the developing periods.

6. In the astrological aspects we find that, through influences from sojourns in the Venus environs, the entity is a lover of beauty; especially of song.

7. And there should be given training and development, and the awakening for the entity in those influences pertaining to a knowledge of, and the channel for the expression of, the abilities for the use of the entity’s voice in PRAISE and in thanksgiving, - rather than in those pertaining to the emotions of body or the arousing of those influences that would direct same in such channels.

8. Hence all things that have to do with phases of man’s ability of expression in beautiful ways and manners will be of interest to the entity, - whether pertaining to nature, to voice or song, or even to art subjects.

9. These will need, then, the directing in those channels that will bring an appreciation, more and more, of those things that were attempted in the experiences through the sojourns in the earth.

10. From the Jupiterian sojourn we find not only the benevolent but the adverse forces. For, while Venus WITH the Jupiterian brings the enjoyment of the beautiful in ways that would pertain to a universal consciousness or activity, the adverse in Mars indicates that wrath or anger or temper, or such, may bring those things that will cause the influence to be in a reverse manner, as it were, in relation to the entity’s APPLICATION of abilities in these directions.

11. The Uranian aspects, - as combined with the negative Jupiterian forces, - show that sudden changes may be brought about by the activities at such periods when the entity comes under those influences, unless the entity is well grounded in the purposes and aims as from a spiritual nature, rather than from that of a material success.

12. From the Uranian influences we find the extremes, which may be indicated even in the present at times in the activity - or the response the entity makes to things of various characters that attract the entity.

13. Hence the needs for those directions as indicated, in the formative years or periods of the entity.

14. As to the appearances in the earth, and the influence they may bear upon the entity’s activities in the present, - these being many (as will be indicated, - that is, as compared to others), the influences will bring, as may be seen even in these formative years, a very definite emotional nature.

15. For, as indicated - or as he gives expression in the present - what the entity wants to do, he wants to do NOW! and to do it of a sudden, and in the way that is indicated by the entity! and there isn’t a question as to what is desired to be done, either!

16. Before this we find the entity was in the lands west of the entity’s present nativity, during those periods just prior to and after the destruction of what was known as the Fort Dearborn period.

17. There we find the entity was in the capacity of a teacher, a priest, a minister to the needs of the peoples; in the name Jerry Shaughnessy - Father Shaughnessy.

18. In the experience we find that the entity gained throughout, for the activities in the experience brought the entity in contact with those of every walk of life. And the manners in which the entity acted in meeting the various experiences and conditions brought the understanding to many as to how kindness, gentleness, patience, brings its reward in friendships and hopes, and the banishment of fear - that is the experience of man in his sojourn in materiality.

19. Thus we find that through the formative years the directions as should be indicated for the entity should be close in touch with the teachings of the church, - not that as of a dogmatic influence, but for its beauty, its truth, its basic forces, that should be the principle in each and EVERY life.

20. Hence the entity should be active in those phases of same to which he gave his activities in that sojourn, - as a leader of song, as a director of the lives of individuals through the ability to set to music, as it were, the experiences of individuals in their walks of life.

21. And many of the songs of that period were due to the activities of the entity, - even portions of the natives or the Red Men, in making chants, owed their abilities to the activities of the entity through that sojourn.

22. Before that we find the entity was in the French period designated as the Crusade experience, when there were the ideals and purposes of the peoples of that land for the defense of an ideal.

23. Hence in the very natures of the entity, as may be indicated at times in the formative years of activity, there will be seen the abilities of the entity as a leader, as a director of custom; and yet the ability to “fight” physically for a cause, and the determinations and the purposefulness with which the entity will direct itself.

24. Yet, as indicated, these should be tempered with a purposefulness for the creative influence and force within the life, rather than just because of the satisfying or gratifying of the physical, or the desire to be in power and authority.

25. Those who are given such, to be sure, have the greater opportunities; but in the trainings for those individuals who may come to such by the natural tend or trend or bent, these should be in such ways that those WITH same use such to the glory of that influence and force for which each entity enters a material experience, rather than for the glorifying of self or the aggrandizement of individual purposes, individual fame or fortune.

26. Then we find the entity was in the name Abbe’ Endeun (Rene). In the experience the entity gained, the entity lost. In the purposefulness, and for the cause, gained. In the application of the entity in the experience did the entity lose.

27. In the present the tendencies may be seen in the desire to dress, or parade; or those activities in which there is the following of the intent and purpose to direct those who would form a parade, or an organization, - and the tendency towards organizations and clubs. And during the formative years, a little after the present age, the entity will find itself forming groups and clubs, and such.

28. Before that we find the entity was in the Promised Land, during those periods when there was the greater expression of the God-Love in the earth.

29. The entity was among those of the children of the household of those who became the leaders in Laodicea, or of those peoples of Lycia. And the entity was among those who were blessed as a child by the Master, on the way to the upper coasts of Galilee.

30. These the entity held to, in the activities in the early church in Perga and Pamphylia, and Laodicea; for the entity was a companion of Luke and Paul and Lucius, through portions of those periods of activity in all of that part of the Holy Land.

31. The entity was among those who were sent to the Roman experience for that activity in the church there; CHOSEN by those of the Romans who became converted to the doctrines of the church in Caesarea, Jerusalem and other lands.

32. Hence in portions of the activity there the entity ministered to the needs of the saints who were imprisoned before their demise in the experience.

33. As to the activities in the present from that sojourn, we will find the abilities of the entity as a statistician, or as a keeper of records for activities whether in a commercial or an ecclesiastical field; or any form of records being kept will be a channel through which the entity may find the greater expression in this experience.

34. The name then was Pebilus. In the experience the entity gained throughout; and much of same may be needed in the present to direct the entity in those activities in which the greater influences may find their expression.

35. Before that we find the entity was in the Persian land, as now known, during those periods when there were the activities of the teacher in the ‘city in the hills and the plains.’

36. The entity then was in the household of Croesus, and a guard to the king’s exchequer itself. And through those activities the entity became an active force for certain peoples who came under the direction of the activities of the teacher in the ‘city in the hills and plains.’

37. There we find, in the latter portion of that experience, the entity became a power in the commercial service and activity in that ‘city in the hills and the plains,’ making for the mediums of exchange between the peoples of Egypt and India and Mongolia and all of the northern portions that brought caravans through that portion of the land.

38. The entity lost, the entity gained, the entity lost through that experience. When power and might came into the hands of the entity, the abilities to oppress, or to gain the material things through the power itself, brought destructive forces.

39. Hence those things as would pertain more to the spiritual should be impressed upon the entity through the developing years in this experience, if there would be the greater influences, forces or powers directed for good in the experience.

40. Before that we find the entity was in the Egyptian land, during that period when there were the reconstruction activities.

41. With the entrance of those from the Atlantean land, and the return of the Priest and the Natives which brought the influences for the greater advancement and development, the entity was among those chosen for a special service in the representation of the government.

42. Hence the entity rose to one of power in the political as well as in the religious forces of that experience.

43. And we will find an interest indicated by the entity in the activities of those natures, as may be magnified by the very influences and forces that may guide the entity to form groups, or secret orders, or activities of natures and of groups pertaining to a special service, as indicated from that experience.

44. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, and that to which it may attain, and how:

45. As indicated, much of the ability, as well as the forces that may direct the entity in this experience, will depend upon the training of the entity through the periods of its formative years.

46. This should be, as indicated, first in that of the church itself; not as an ecclesiastical direction, but RATHER as the purposefulness, and as to the desires and the promptings of the activities; and especially the voice training should be a part of the entity’s experience. And then choose for itself, as to the directions in which these may be taken, AFTER its seventeenth or eighteenth year.

47. In that period of the seventh year, be mindful of those influences especially in which there might be injury to the extremities of the body, - if there would be given the greater opportunity for the development throughout this experience.

48. Ready for questions.

49. (Q) Is the environment of the home life right for entity? (A) Who is to question such? If there were not the opportunity for all about the entity, it would not be in the environment!

Those then upon whom the entity depends, not the entity but the home life and those about it, are to measure up to the standards to bring the greater opportunity for the entity’s development.

50. (Q) In what church should the entity be taught? (A) There’s only one church!

51. (Q) Give guiding advice to parents for correction of faults. (A) These have been indicated, in the things given to beware of, and as to the channel in which the vocational activities are to be directed.

52. (Q) What causes entity’s apparent desire to molest animals, people and things? (A) The natural interest in those very influences, as indicated by the entity’s activity in the experience before this in the wide open spaces! Might better ask why the entity likes to stay outdoors!

53. (Q) What section of the country will afford best physical and mental development? (A) That, of course, closer to the environs in which there were the activities of the entity in the former experience; but it does not depend so much on the place as on HOW the developments are indicated for the entity.

54. (Q) Has the entity any special talent for musical instruments? (A) As indicated, voice.

55. (Q) To what color, or colors, does the entity best vibrate? (A) Those of the somber natures or colors, or especially nature in the spring and fall. For if it will be noted, it will be seen that the entity gives special notice to all such.

56. (Q) What years will make period of greatest development for entity? (A) As indicated, the seventh and the eighteenth, - these will be turning periods for the entity.

57. (Q) What have been the entity’s past associations with his present aunt, [1523]? (A) The child in the Laodicea experience!

58. (Q) What are the urges brought forward in the present, and how may they be best used for their mutual development? (A) As may be indicated from the activity of each of these, they may be a prop one to the other.

59. (Q) What have been his past associations with his present mother [2336]? (A) In the experience before this very closely associated, being the brother in that period of the present mother. Companions in the French experience, and very close associations in the Egyptian experience of the same character as at present.

60. (Q) What were the past associations with the present father [2385]? (A) These have been in two or three experiences, as companions, and as father and son.

Especially in the early years, keep the entity in those purposes, desires and activities as indicated; and especially in the trainings for the use of the voice in the expressing of that which is desired in its activity.

Keep ever before the entity the emblems of the Jesuit! [See 1990-4, Par. 21-A, also 1523-15, Par. 18-A.]

R1. Subsequently three additional Physical Readings were secured for him.

R2. 3/16/40 Father’s ltr. to [1523]: ”…My ans. to HLC’s questions: 1. So far as we are able to determine (considering [1990]‘s age) his life rdg. supports his characteristics completely. We have proven this by using the method suggested by the reading in directing him or persuading him to do what we wish him to and then using opposite methods. The methods suggested by the rdg. are the only ways found so far that give us any control over him at all. His development of power and authority in previous experiences have been demonstrated by the way he tells those around him to do certain things instead of asking them and it is evident from his expression and manner that he expects them to be done, right away. He is constantly calling our attention to things, pictures or objects that he calls ‘beautiful’. He will wear his mother’s necklace, pins, brooches or other things of decorations continually on his clothes - he calls them his decorations.

“2. As ans. in the 1st ques. the reading has the only keys that will give us control over him. The rdg. has given us an understanding of him and his ways that we would probably never have found out. If we did finally find these things out it would be too late to put them to any valuable use. Can definitely say that the rdg. has been and will be of invaluable use.

“3. Am unable at the moment to put my fingers on any part of the rdg. that would interest me, MOST. It all interests me MOST. Have had a couple of occasions to explain things to [1990] that I felt at first would be over his head and was surprised when he actually did grasp what I was trying to explain. Example: I was putting him to bed and due to the fact we had been playing before he went to bed he wouldn’t say his prayers or if he did start he was acting cute. I decided to explain to him my conception of prayer and its meaning. You can imagine my surprise when he quieted right away and studied me with the most intent expression in his eyes. I explained that he was saying his prayers to God and not to Daddy - that I was only trying to help him to talk to God. When I finished - he went right through his prayers without a hitch.”

R3. 4/13/40 Father’s ltr. to [1523]: ”…Turning my attention to things I wish to ask about - can’t remember you mentioning whether the manner in which I answered questions on [1990]‘s life rdg. was satisfactory. I believe I said that I would go more into the rdg. if what I said or wrote wasn’t sufficient. I believe one of HLC’s ques. referred to the most outstanding thing or even we noticed about [1990]‘s rdg. Well since I wrote on the subject something happened that fairly started me out of my boots. For some 4 wks. or more we noticed [1990] using a word that was entirely alien to his or anyone else’s vocabulary here. The word was evidently a proper name as he would use it in that sense. The word, - the way he would pronounce it - sounded like Pheobus, as near as I can spell it. He would name several persons he knows and end up with ‘and Pheobus’. You ask him who a certain person was that you knew he should know and he would answer ‘Pheobus’. I asked [2336] if she knew where he got the word or name and she was as much in the dark as I. Well you can imagine my surprise while re-reading the rdg. and noticing that in one of his incarnations his name was ‘Pebilos’…get his life rdg. and check it and let me have whatever Mr. Cayce or HLC might have to say about this…”

R4. 7/23/40 Father’s [2385] ltr. to sister [1523], ([1990]‘s aunt): ”…I suppose [1990] has been pestering you considerably the past few weeks. [2336] said that you had taken him off her hands quite a bit which has given her the opportunity to help out Mother and [1548] at the house… I can’t understand why [4930] should act the way he does toward him. Of course I don’t expect everyone to gush over my youngster but it doesn’t hurt anyone to be civil to anyone whether they are 3 or 30…”

R5. Note by IMG: [4930] - another brother to […] the father [2385] and [1523]; didn’t have a rdg.; see [1523]‘s ck. rdg. on the Dearborn period - and reason enough will be seen for [4930]‘s attitude.

R6. 10/23/40 See father’s Life Reading 2385-1, Par. 43-A indicating they had quite a scrap through those periods (around Chicago) when [1990] was a priest and [2385] was anything but a priest.

Also see 2385-1, Par. 44-A giving reason for discord between [2385] and wife, [2336], since their son, [1990], was born, and explaining how to overcome it.

R7. 11/18/40 Mother’s ltr. to [1541]: ”…I appreciate your advice about [1990] and am trying hard to follow it. He is very trying at times but I guess we should be glad he has so much energy and is well. He makes friends quickly; everybody seems to like him…he is real witty at times…he keeps asking me if I like Chicago and gets mad at me when I say I don’t like Chicago…”

R8. 2/25/42 Father’s ltr.: “His favorite stories at this time are the Good Samaritan and David and Goliath. It is priceless to see how his face lights up and his eyes shine when I come to the part in the Good Samaritan - where the Samaritan stops to help the poor fellow that was injured by the robbers - after the other two had passed him up. He repeated the story for me the other evening almost word for word, as I had told it to him. It is amazing to us at times the memory he has. I have been in the habit lately of incorporating the ‘Lord’s Prayer’ with his nightly prayer and as it had been repeated to him a comparatively few times, I was completely taken off my feet night before last when he went right thru the prayer without a hitch. I was so amazed for a moment I couldn’t speak after he finished. I am ashamed to say how old I was before I knew the prayer by heart. Now he doesn’t wait for any prompting on the Lord’s Prayer’ at all. Something else that I thought was outstanding about his saying the prayer was the fact that he terminated the prayer with an ‘Amen’ right after the part ‘Deliver us from Evil’ which you no-doubt know is the Catholic version of the prayer.

“While I am on this seemingly inexhaustible subject - namely [1990] - here is something I felt you might be interested in hearing. Yesterday he said to his mother - out of a clear sky - ‘When I die I want to go to Heaven and them come back again.’ This remark he made twice on separate days. To the best of my memory there has been no discussion in his presence of reincarnation and if there had been I would have considered it over his head. Possibly [1523] can throw some light on it as I don’t know just what she discussed with him or what suggestions she gave him while he was down there last summer. He is a constant source of surprise to us - often popping something on us that he has been carrying around in his head long after we have forgotten having said anything to him on the subject.”

R9. 4/28/42 See 1523-15, Par. 18-A—20-A regarding advisability of [1990] spending summer with his aunt, [1523], also in re channels through which Jesuit emblems might be secured for [1990].

R10. 5/7/42 Mother’s ltr. to [1523]: “We want to send [1990] down to you but we are so uncertain about doing it. I know he would enjoy his visit with you. That is all he talks about going down to help you clean your yard and going to the beach and riding on the bicycle with you. He gets so excited when we talk about it. I’ll soon let you know what we plan to do.

“The baby is fine. We had some more pictures taken of [1990] and [2695] and if they turn out alright will send you all a few.

“[1990] is my biggest headache. I think I will have a nervous breakdown before it is time for him to start to school. He is a regular wanderer. Half the time I don’t know where he is. Some evenings he doesn’t come into the house until 7:00 o’clock after being out all day long. He just roams from street to street where ever there are any children to play with - that’s where you will find [1990]. He goes off to the Custer high school about 6 or 7 blocks from here and plays with the kids during recess - in the meantime I am nearly frantic looking for him. He went to Custer school one day last week and got on the fire escape, that one on the out-side of the building and walked clear to the top…one of the larger boys saw him and went up after him and brought him down through the school. He went all the way to the roof - the boy said just one misstep and he would have been killed. That’s just one of the many things he does that is driving me crazy. He told me he went clear to the ceiling and could see the sky. The other day he went out and tried to lift up the man holes on the streets - said he wanted to see what was down there. He is the most inquisitive youngster. I’ll have to give him credit though, he is far from being dumb and can put two and two together and figure things out better than most kids at his age. He is always suggesting ways to do things. He can carry on a conversation as intelligent as an adult. He talks to every body. He’s anything but shy, but oh me what a worry! I just called today to make arrangements to send him to kindergarten in Sept. Those things I told you about him are some of the reasons I’m afraid to send him down to you. You will surely have your hands full and I am wondering if you realize that. I’m wondering too which is the safest way to send him down - by plane or train.

“He comes in and tells me all about the different youngsters he plays with. One thing about him if he does anything that is wrong and he knows it is - he always tells me about it. I tell him when he tells the truth he won’t get punished. He is so anxious to go to school.

“Talk about embarrassing moments. When the [2742]‘s came to talk about the rdgs. the first time they stayed until 3:30 in the morning. Well I was dead tired as I have to get up at 5:45 every morning. We didn’t get to bed until 4 o’clock - [1990] heard us talking about how late they stayed and how tired I was - when they came on Monday night to talk about the rdg. again, the first thing [1990] said to them was ‘why did you stay so late the last time - you were here - my mom was all tired out the next day because you stayed so long’ I felt like crawling thru the floor.”

R11. 10/14/42 See aunt’s rdg. 1523-16, Par. 26-A indicating her child, [1990]‘s father, in the Palestine period was Lucius [294].

R12. 7/7/52 Father wrote that [1990] and his little sister attend parochial school. They are beginning to question him as to why he isn’t a Catholic, and as a result they have some very interesting discussions. The Catholic nun who is teaching [1990] Latin says he is excellent in Latin - far in advance in his class to others, learning it with very little effort.

R13. 11/52 Father wrote of his athletic interests, especially football.

R14. 3/4/53 Aunt [1523]‘s report: “[1990] and his father were here for the day and I went over [1990]‘s Life Rdg. with him. He told me of an interesting incident about something that occurred when he was in the 7th grade. It was during history class, and they were studying the story of a priest who had been instrumental in working with an Indian chief to put down a massacre - He said there was quite a bit of detail to the story which put the priest in a very good light. The teacher asked the class for the name of the Indian, and without hesitation, he supplied the name. She then asked him how he knew the name of the Indian, since the name was not given in the history book. He said he didn’t know - that it just came to him. Then he further explained that he had been a priest in his last incarnation, and lived out in that part of the country. The nun answered, she didn’t know what he was talking about but that he had given the right answer. Further, she explained that the name of the Indian could be found in - ‘such and such’ a reference book, etc.

“I asked him if he recalled anything that happened when he was about 7 yrs. old that the rdg. could have been referring to, and he said that a very large stone flower pot - filled with dirt, etc., fell on his leg, and bruised the bone and leg very badly. He was laid up with it for awhile. That was the only thing he could think of.

“Regarding [1990-3, Par. 55-A] and color: When he was very little - about 2-1/2 yrs. old - he spent a summer with his grandmother who made corduroy overalls for him. His mother always selected autumn colors for him - greens, blues, orange, etc. He would pick up the scraps from the floor and exclaim, ‘Look, Grandma, aren’t they beautiful?’ I recall so plainly his laugh - it was ‘merry - and like a bell’.”

R15. 1/59 He got out of the Navy, after spending 2 yrs. in the service. He had the highest GCT rating of anyone on the ship. He didn’t like being in the Navy - didn’t want to make a vocation of it. He was in for the 2 yrs. required - got a chance to “see the world” enjoyed that part of it. He said it wasn’t the hard work - just didn’t like being in the service. He had it in mind to go to Central Technology [?] Institute, Kansas City, Mo., but so far would not be able to do this, since at least some money is required to get started and neither he nor his parents can manage this just now.

R16. 6/59 At present he is working with his uncle [1710], who is a contractor; cuts in underground utilities - builds roads - landscaping, etc. [1990]‘s responsibilities are to keep machinery oiled or greased, etc., in good running condition. He can also operate large machinery, bulldozers, etc., but mostly he takes care of the machinery.

R17. 11/61 He married.

R18. 9/3/63 Aunt [1523] reported that [1990] is now Assistant Mgr. of a clothing store that caters to the Ivy League, and has settled down to a happy married life.

R19. 7/11/78 His Aunt [1523] reported: “He has been with a national chain store since 1968 - began as a territory salesman. He has just been promoted to Assistant Wholesale Mgr., salary increase to $20,000 per year, plus bonus, plus various benefits. Yearly tours for increasing sales volume. Won a trip (10 days) to Honolulu, 10/77, for two. Also won a trip in 1978 (10 days) to California. He is responsible for over 30 stores in the state of … lives near … active in church work (Catholic). His oldest son is an altar boy. Three boys, one girl. All healthy and bright.”
