HLC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions she submits, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2038].
-
As we find with this body, there are very definite causes of disturbances in the physical functioning of the body.
-
We find that these have been caused by a physical activity that caused a pinching, or a disturbance in the lumbar axis, in the body alighting from a vehicle; turning the limb or ankle, and more disturbance thought to be there, but the real disturbance was caused in the lumbar axis.
-
And it will be found that the limbs are NOT of equal length, if they are measured by the body lying prone.
-
This tendency of the suppression of activities through the lumbar AND the sacral area has hindered the impulse of the circulation to the lower limbs. At times this causes the cold extremities, at others a numbness, an aching through the knees, and a tautness in the muscular forces above the knees - under a portion of the limb.
-
Also an aching is caused in the smaller or lower portions of the cerebrospinal system, and a hindering towards the activity of the lower intestinal tract; giving a heaviness in the abdominal area, especially toward the right side, - though sharp or acute pains occasionally through the lower left side.
-
We find that these disturbances have produced at times such a reaction upon the nervous system as to hinder the nominal or normal reaction through the nerves along the cerebrospinal or the sympathetic system; thus a heaviness through the nape portion of the neck, through the vagus center, and a fullness at times through chest, - as from reflexes to the muscular forces in the area about the thyroid, and extending to the sternum portion of the breast area.
-
These are the disturbances as we find them with this body.
-
These, of course, sympathetically disturb the circulatory forces, and there are the natural reactions towards eliminations, and the ability of the body to use self in locomotion, - or soon tiring out.
-
To remove the disturbances, -
-
We would have, first, those applications of heavy salt packs across the area of the lumbar AND the sacral; this of an evening or night, before there would be the osteopathic adjustments in the lumbar axis, the coccyx area, and the coordinating of the other centers, - that is, at the 9th dorsal specific, the brachial center, and the vagus plexus - with those corrections as GRADUALLY made.
-
This as we find should NOT require a great NUMBER of adjustments, but those of a rather specific nature.
-
As an aid to better eliminations, we would use the SERUTAN; thus producing greater bulk through the intestinal system and aiding in better eliminations.
-
In the diet, - have those foods that are body, blood and nerve building; ELIMINATING any great quantity of meats of any character, though not entirely eliminated unless so desired by the body.
-
Doing these, we will bring the better and near to normal forces for the body, [2038].
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Would you recommend any particular doctor for following these suggestions? (A) Any one that would work with the suggestions. But the applications of the salt may be made, or SHOULD be made, several hours before the adjustments are made.
Dobbins, or Robertson.

R1. 11/11/39 [2038]‘s letter to EC:
…, N.Y.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
The report arrived on Friday, and I am very much interested, and astonished to see how very clearly it shows the trouble back of all my of-late-years-aches in my legs.
I broke my left leg in 1925, and have often thought its improper setup, or something, was responsible for much of my discomfort, which has increased with the years, while I am really suffering a good deal when I walk continuously, and, being well otherwise, it handicaps me very much.
The fact that you see the “pinching” as responsible also for the chest congestion, and lack of motor[?]-power is a great relief, as doctors have been considering it all as circulatory. Doubtless the circulation is affected, (as my diastolic (?) blood-pressure is over 90) and yet my heart seems to be organically sound. This explanation you give certainly shows the cause of all of it. I shall see Dr. Dobbins tomorrow, and arrange, at once, for the treatments you advise, and it will be fine to feel that we can all cooperate, and work out relief, & perhaps, I fervently hope, a cure.
Although I am too far up in years I still feel life is good, and I like to live it fully. A case of spirit being willing, but flesh weak!
You have very definitely helped me, and I am extremely grateful for your remarkable ability, & effort in my behalf.
Very sincerely yours, [2038]
R2. 11/20/39 [2038]‘s letter to EC:
…, N.Y.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Both Dr. Dobbins and I are a little in doubt as to exactly what you mean by “heavy salt packs,” and I am wishing to ask if you will be good enough to let me know a little more particularly how I am to do them.
Dr. Dobbins thought it meant bath towels wrung out in a saturated solution of Epsom Salts, applied hot for about 20 minutes, and that is what I have done, but it does not satisfy us that we are doing what you wish to have done.
Already Dr. Dobbins has corroborated your findings, & thinks it will be a long process to rectify the spinal maladjustment. I felt better[?] at once after one treatment! It is most helpful, and will make my satisfaction in life greater. I can assure you, to be free of this painful abnormality in spine, and muscular strain.
Very sincerely yours, [2038]
R3. 11/22/39 EC’s letter to [2038]:
Dear Mrs. [2038]
Yours of the 20th - as we have interpreted the information when it has given the heavy salt packs is; get heavy salt like is usually used to salt meat with. Put this in a sack or bag sufficient large to cover the area you wish to treat, and salt be about 1/2 inch thick, heat this as hot as you can well stand and apply to body as indicated. Think you will see there is a vast difference in these from the Salts packs or saturated solution of epsom salts. Will relax much more some way, and the salt has a curative influence some way. Will be glad to have your and Dr. Dobbins report of the results of its use. Have given such many times, and where the salt was indicated it was much better than the epsom salts packs, in practically every case.
Glad you are feeling better and sincerely hope you will keep on the improve.
Thanking you and sincerely hoping to have been of help
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce
R4. 11/29/39 [2038]‘s letter to EC:
The … …, N.Y.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Thanks for your more explicit instructions re the heavy salt packs, and I have now procured the salt, & made the bag, and shall certainly precede each osteopathic treatment, (I am having two a week.) with the application of it.
Dr. Dobbins seems to find plenty of disturbance in my spine, and lumbar & sacro-iliac region, and seems to feel he can help me. I find the treatments relaxing & easing, but exhausting. Dr. Dobbins advised a lift of 3/4 of an inch to be added to my left heel, and that already helped, though of course it caused changes that were inevitable in correcting others. I am using the “Serutan,” and it all helps to relieve pressure.
I feel sure I shall be much helped, and am grateful to you. Both Dr. Dobbins & I feel rather uncertain of the wet Epsom Salt compresses, and are glad to know exactly what you meant me to do.
Sincerely & gratefully, [2038]
He found ribs on left side adhered, thus causing neuralgia, & painful breathing, & every thing, really, as you wrote.
R5. 1/12/40 [2038]‘s letter to EC:
…, N.Y.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
I am glad to report to you that I have improved very much indeed. Dr. Dobbins has done a fine job on my spine, and the congested chest, and pains in my side & back are practically gone.
The pains in my left leg are also infrequent, and my pelvis has stayed in place, which makes the legs, now, of equal length, but my right leg is very painful, becomes tied up with cramplike tension, and my right foot becomes dead, & white, & without circulation or feeling.
Dr. Dobbins has suggested that I ask for another reading, as a check up, and I am wishing to ask for an appointment.
Hoping to hear from you & with gratitude for your help, I am, Sincerely, [2038]
R6. 1/19/40 [2038]‘s letter to EC:
…, N.Y.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Thank you for your note, and appointment on Tuesday, Jan. 23rd, 3.30 - 4.30 E.S.T.
I would like to ask why my right foot goes numb frequently, & always when I walk more than 100 yds., and why the calf of my right leg gets tight and cramped.
I feel very much improved, and my spine & pelvis, & ribs are practically normal, & stay in place.
I spoke with Dr. Dobbins about any questions he might have, and he apparently had none, but felt a “check up” would be a good idea.
I can walk only a little & slowly, and my right foot, being numb, & as if frozen, is a great handicap, especially accompanied by the aching right leg, and some weakness in my back.
