EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2123], and those conditions as surround same. In the physical forces of the body we find there are abnormal conditions. These, as we find, are of specific natures, affecting not only in the functioning of the system but the structural forces or portions of system also. These, as we find, may be aided in not only the functioning but in the strength and vitality as may be given to the whole system, bringing about a more near NORMAL aspect of the physical functioning, as well as in the structural forces and activities of the body. These, then, are the conditions as we find them with this body, [2123] we are speaking of, present in this room:
-
IN THE BLOOD SUPPLY, we find this somewhat below the normal in the red blood. Though this is a form of anemia, it is not a cause - rather a result of conditions as exist, and this may be, as we find, materially aided, so that the strength, the virility, the activities of the whole system may be aided through this direction.
-
IN THE NERVE FORCES OF THE BODY, here we find some distortions that are produced by conditions as have long existed from pressures, that HAVE prevented - and DO prevent - the normal activity in both the circulation as related to the nervous energies of the system as well as those of supplying nutriment through the impulses as are give the circulatory system, in both nerve energy AND blood supply through structural portions of the body. As is seen in the position, in the CONDITION as exists in the cerebro-spinal nervous system in many portions of same. Those particularly in the locomotaries, in the lumbar and sacral region, as well as those in the lower portion of the dorsal and the UPPER portion of the dorsal area. These, as we find, AFFECT the activities in some portions of the functioning system, as is indicated at times by the pressure as is created in that of the secondary cardiac area, which affects through the pulmonaries those conditions to the bronchi and lungs; though this, again, is NOT an ORGANIC disorder, rather a result of impairment in the circulation and in the attempt of the system to adjust itself in the manner in which the conditions are hindered, brings about those reactions that make for an excess of the mucus reactions in bronchi and in portions of the lung; for the attempt is to eliminate when an excess is thrown off through this channel more than is ORDINARILY done. Hence the expectoration, the cough, the irritation as comes at times. This is rather of a SYMPATHETIC nature than of an organic nature. With the condition as is existent IN the blood supply, this becomes more acute at times.
-
IN THE FUNCTIONING OF THE ORGANS THEMSELVES, in the brain forces we find the receptivity and the reaction, and the ability of discernment, acute in the physical functioning.
-
In the minutia, or in those portions of the soft tissue in the antrum and the soft portions of face and head, these at times show congestion, as indicated from irritations as are produced in the bronchi and in the secondary cardiac reflex forces of the system, affecting same through those of the circulation to the head, both in the lymph and blood supply. This also a sympathetic condition.
-
Throat, bronchi and lungs, these - as we find, as has been indicated - rather a sympathetic reaction in the system than that of an organic derangement, produced by the attempts of the system to assert or adjust itself under those conditions as existent.
-
In the digestive system and heart’s action, these we find under the EXISTENT forces in near a normal reaction. Those of the activities of the liver and spleen do not always function in coordination. These, however, are much bettered than that as HAS existed in the functioning of these organs, especially the spleen, which acts in its double capacity of clarifying of the red blood supply, as also the discernment through the activities of the brain forces and its cells in its dissemination of impulses in the system. In the liver and lower digestive system, we find these are very good in their functionings.
-
In meeting, then, the needs of the conditions as are existent in the present, and bringing about - for the physical organism of the body - that which would be much nearer an active, and much nearer normal forces, as we find may be accomplished to a greater degree than may be expected nominally, yet to the body itself - will that be builded as an expectancy for the developments and the adjustments in the normal forces of the system - we will find a receptivity and an activity that will be surprising, even to the body itself. In meeting these, then, we would begin first with those of the massage as will carry in same those of equal parts of olive oil, tincture of myrrh, oil of cedar, oil of mustard - see? Add first by heating the oil, that of the tincture of myrrh. Then those of the oil of cedar and oil of mustard. These would be massaged each day along the cerebro-spinal system, ESPECIALLY those in the brachial plexus - as the 3rd and 4th dorsal area, in the 10th, 11th and 12th dorsal area, and in the lumbar regions - see?
-
Each WEEK, as these are given, we would also use those of the massage over the limbs - the lower limbs, from the locomotary center to the ankle - those as would be prepared in this manner:
-
To 1/2 gallon of PLAIN gasoline, not colored - or not that of high test, but the PLAIN gasoline, half a gallon - add:
Oil of Cedar…2 ounces, Oil of Mustard…2 ounces, Oil of Sassafras…1 ounce.
This would be massaged in the locomotary center - that is, the lumbar center, see - once each week, and along the limbs to the ankles and the feet.
-
We would take as much activity in water as is POSSIBLE for the body to do, see - as swimming, as any activity of that nature;
-
Adding also those vibrations as will be had from taking the animated ash, with the ultra VIOLET light over the 3rd and 4th CERVICAL area and over the solar plexus area ONCE each week - not on the days, however, or portion of week those of the lower massage is given. Do that.
-
In the matter of the diet, we would use that of a well BALANCED diet that is particularly blood and nerve building. Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What has caused the sole of my feet to draw up to a tight, cramped condition, at times worse than others, which has caused me to become unbalanced and fall? (A) This an activity of the sciatic centers. Hence that particular order than the locomotaries and the limbs be massaged with, a different combination from that as is to exercise the muscular forces along the cerebro-spinal system. With the use of these massage on the limbs, see, first we will find a tenderness occurring in the bursae of the feet, ESPECIALLY in that in the heal and the ball of the feet. This, with the third or fourth application however, will disappear and there will be more elasticity, more strength, and an easier activity of the body.
-
(Q) Is there a growth on my left ovary? (A) This from a pressure in the lumbar and sacral area, rather than a growth. There IS at present an adhesion there. This, WITH the massage, with the animated ash - that will allow the activity of oxygen released in the system - will CLARIFY this condition, if taken at present; otherwise, it must of itself - being adhered - become a growth, or a drying up of tissue itself.
-
(Q) What dosage of the ash, and how often? (A) We would take the ash one-eighth grain EVERY day. On the day that the ultra violet is to be applied, half to three-quarters of an hour before, take a quarter grain - or a double dose, see?
-
(Q) The light to be applied once each week? (A) Preferably Tuesdays, while the massage for the lower portion on Thursdays - see?
-
(Q) The other massage to be every day? (A) Every evening, and especially in the BRACHIAL area - the solar plexus area and the upper LUMBAR area, which is in the 3rd and 4th lumbar, see? The 1st, 3rd and 4th dorsal, the 10th, 11th and 12th dorsal, and the 3rd and 4th lumbar. The massage for the lower portion of the body, in the lower lumbar and the whole of the sacral, or the locomotary area for the lower extremities - see? The application of the ultra violet over the 3rd and 4th CERVICAL area, the 10th and 11th DORSAL area, that it releases the oxygen for the respiratory system in the one, for that of the digestive and assimilating area in the other. We will find results. Be patient. Be persistent. Be consistent - for the works that may be worked through thee will be gratifying in every sense.
-
We are through.

R1. 9/13/31 [2123]‘s letter to EC:
…, Illinois
Dear Mr. Cayce:
It seems only yesterday that I was talking with you and your beloved family, but quite some time has elapsed since I bid you adieu. And not one precious day has passed nor one glorious night has waned into another day that my kindest thoughts and sincerest prayers have not been with you. Again and again it seems that I have only to reach out my hand to grasp your own in my [mine] so close and I in spirit with you I don’t suppose you will even know, and I have no way of telling you, just how much I truly appreciate and love you. God alone knows, for it is the Christ-like love in my heart which is bestowed upon you. And it is the gratitude of the really needful that fills my heart. How sweet, how preciously sweet, it is to me to have a prayer, I have prayed for so many years, answered so directly, so satisfactorily and in such a genuinely pleasing manner, as your coming into my life. You are a wonderful man, Mr. Cayce, and you have sense to see that your humbleness makes you great and powerful - makes you understandingly human, akin to all the feelings and emotions of man, and yet so Christ-like, so godly and faithful to your talent. I hope you are spared long upon this earth, for your mission in life is so necessary, and there are thousands upon thousands, even as I, calling desperately for your help. But you have answered my call, and given me great peace and hope and faith. I may come back to you again and again, not alone for help, but to be in your radiant presence, but always I shall feel deeply my big responsibility - my share in carrying on the good work. I so thoroughly believe that although I have not material goods to give you now an earnest prayer and a kind word will be a cherished gift. For, it has been proven to me, as I wrote in my big article last March, and sold to Psychology Magazine, that thoughts are things and words have power, and if one decrees a thing it will be given unto one according to one’s faith.
When I left your home not even my dearest experience in love had made me happier than I was that eventful day, August 31st. But the keenest disappointment, that I did not have the much anticipated talk with you alone, lay in my defiant heart. There were many tangible problems pertaining to my own personal affairs and life that I felt that I must talk over with you, but the opportunity was not available. When Miss Davis was typing my Life’s Reading I wanted so much to ask you to spend that time with me alone, but there were the others to consider. To take them into our conference was too much, and to have left them sitting alone in the living room with our noticeable departure to be alone would have been hurting to them. I tried to tell myself they wouldn’t be hurt but I couldn’t do it remembering that I hurt them when I wanted all my readings to be in the presence of only your wife, Miss Davis and myself. When I saw that I hurt them I asked God to forgive me and to make me strong enough to want them present. And I think I entered into the readings with that exact feeling, but none of them can understand how easily I can contact another’s thoughts - how strongly I feel the words spoken for or against me, and how these thoughts and words affect me. I tried very hard to enter into a spiritual affinity with you during the readings, and from what those present said about the readings afterwards. I fully believe I did as well as I could. At any rate I threw the shield of God’s everlasting love about me and, regardless of what others said or thought about me, I fully thrilled to the sensation of great, great happiness. That was my DAY and Hour; years I have lived for it! How could any of them present that day know how it feels to know that there is a chance of walking like a normal being, or having a straight strong spine, of being relieved of an numbing pain in one’s limb? Ah, none, but those who have suffered likewise! Perhaps a soldier from the world’s war might say, “I understand,” and I could believe him, but not every soldier has served in the world war or wore a uniform.
I would have stayed over that Monday evening and talked with you but on account of my sister, […] missing her work, and having her salary cut for every day she was absent from the office, and knowing that sister, who is a teacher, was staying with my mother and losing $5.00 for every day she missed at Teacher’s Institute, which was going on that week, I felt obliged to sacrifice a deep-felt desire for them. And now that I am miles from you, and still there is that fervent desire for a confidential talk with you, I DO NOT grieve nor lament. I know that God maketh all things right. There will come another day and we will see each other again, and moments and hours and days will not pass with such rapidity, as they did those few days I was in Virginia Beach, but will pass quietly, calmly and with anticipated thoughts expressed.
We traveled late that Monday night. It was after nine o’clock, I believe, before we stopped. Then we put up at a beautiful old plantation. Quite an experience for me. The white lady was surely a lovely hostess and treated us graciously, and as Edgar Evans said, “things were cheap.” We would have been home Wednesday evening but was held up on account of bad brake service. Just before going into Richmond the next morning we stopped at a big garage, one where all kinds and types of cars were being taken care, and had our brakes tightened. The man who waited on us didn’t know much about Studebaker cars. At any rate he didn’t know he was positively wrecking our brakes entirely when he worked on them, and before we reached Alexandria, Va. our hand brake locked and the foot brakes did almost likewise and the car could barely move. Two country garage men gave us temporary relief, and through hard effort we managed to get to Alexandria. There we sought out a Studebaker garage and got good service, but the gentleman almost swore when he saw the condition of the brakes. To make a long story short we had a long wait while our car was practically rebuilt. I had been in Alexandria before and during our stoping there I tried to point out the things of interest to my sister.
Although we had each a lovely bed that first night out I simply couldn’t sleep for feeling the thoughts of those we had left behind. Both your sisters are lovely girls and they treated us perfectly wonderful, and served their meals so charmingly. The food was deliciously appetizing, well-balanced and according to proper rations, and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there, but it touched me deeply that my own vivaciousness, my care-free attitude should wear on them. My sister, still grieving because she has broken her engagement to a man she loves with all her heart. Wholly on account of the folk’s financial circumstances, was very quiet and grown-up. It made my own intense gladness of being able to live and enjoy life’s blessings stand out like a fire. And when Mr. Hesson cut me hard with some remarks he wouldn’t have believed that I have been deeply and sincerely in love and four times had love taken from me in a cruel manner. During the world’s war death claimed a lover who really loved me, my art, my talent. He, like thousands of other young fellows, wanted to live, and it broke my heart when he had to go. That’s why when you gave that interesting lecture that Sunday afternoon and talked of certain soldier friends that I cried. It’s a weak thing to cry when a thing so long ago has passed, but when the war is mentioned I can still see Bob, and feel his hand-clasp and his struggle to live in spite of wounds. And after Bob came three others, young fellows, each in his turn, and I have known love in its most joyous glow, and I can say truthfully “one can strike another match,” even though one never forgets the love that has gone before. But when Gene was taken away from me this June something inside me snapped. I wonder if I can even fall in love again. The desire for a home, for a baby of my own has silently, steadily slipped from my heart. Gene was my mate astrologically; according to a noted astrologer we were in complete conjunction, exactly the same degrees from the sun, and according to our own desires and ambitions and religious viewpoints and ideals we clicked. And when Gene learned about you he begged me to go to see you. He even use to pray with me for spiritual uplift and healing. He believed I would be healed, which helped me tremendously. As if that wasn’t enough our numbers in Numerology were worked out carefully and it[‘s] an ecstatic fact that we were ideally mated - true mates. He did some art work like myself, and loved poems; and trees and gardens and clean books and all good things of life - the very things I love.
But I must not burden you with this - your time is very precious - it is enough to say he took dangerously ill and had a trained nurse whom he married as soon as he was able to be up. For two weeks this last June I didn’t live; during that time a letter came from you asking me to write something of interest to the board officials of the Institution, other trying matters came to me, and I took care of each in the most darkened existence I have ever passed through, but I found the most beautiful soul comforting solace when I prayed devotedly to God to make me happy because Gene was happy, to make me happy because Edna, the girl he married, would have all the things I dreamed of having with him, that she’d give him the things I’d dreamed of giving him, that she’d love him and be his pal and companion and wife in the fullest, and that every happiness I would have had she had. I thanked God again and again that this was all coming true and from that day to this I’ve been able to bear this keen, heart breaking disappointment with a smile. I still love Gene. I shall always love him, but I no longer cry or lay awake nights thinking of the happy hours we had together. Oh, no, I just thank God that Gene is happy, and I go on my way, “giving to the world the best I have, and knowing that the best will come back to me.”
And this experience has given me the most wonderful conception of Christly love. I have learned the joy of saying, and meaning it too, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” And from my heart has gone all remorse and bitterness and that eternal question “Why?” God tells me beautiful things day after day; he teaches me how to understand a human heart more fully than I did before, and he has shown me why it’s more beautiful to give than to receive. I keep nothing for myself now. Even my desire to make great sums of money is not for myself. It is for my parents who have lived so unwisely in life, and have brought such untold sacrifices upon their children.
One of the things I wanted to talk with you about is my parents quarreling. Their quarrels almost kill me. And just this last week they quarreled bitterly and it made me absolutely physically ill. That, for one reason, delayed my writing you sooner, and with much fruit and vegetable canning I’ve been so very, very tired at nights I cared only to get to bed. You can understand now why I am the family bumper.
It was only this last Friday that I was able to get into … and see my massage doctor. I was very anxious for him to see my physical reading. My, how I wish you could have heard his comments. He praised you highly, and read the reading twice. He said it was the most acute, straight to the point diagnosis he had ever read, and he has read many for people are sent to him constantly from the medical men. He is about the only massage doctor in … the physicians will recognize, but he is a wonderful doctor and he has done some wonderful things with his rubbing. He is eagerly anxious to treat me and help me regain my normal strength, and it gripped me when I saw how deeply touched he was because I must wait until money allows me to take those necessary treatments. I could cry and say it isn’t fair that I must be denied treatments, when I need them so badly, but I’m not doing it. I only ask God to help me with saleable stories and a novel that will be a good selling one, and the strength and time in which to write. For I know when I’ve made enough money nothing will stand in my way.
I sent for the ash immediately, and am doing my best in rubbing my own body. Doctor pointed out the important parts to me and showed me how to massage. My efforts are very weak in comparison with his but at any rate they are invigorating.
I believe you charge $25.00 for a life reading now, don’t you? I don’t [know] when I can pay you in full for mine, which is as precious and sacred to me, as my very own blood, but I will send you money whenever I can. I am enclosing a one dollar bill in this letter to apply on what I owe you.
I hope this long letter hasn’t tired you and I promise to make all letters hereafter shorter. Please tell Miss Davis I will write her later, and tell Hugh Lynn he will receive a “Writer’s Digest,” the magazine I told him about soon. I sent his name into the office for a copy of the magazine.
With kindest regards to every member of your household and family, and to dear little Robert [the little son of Nannie, our Negro cook; they both lived on premises with us at 105th now 67th & Ocean. GD] whose picture I have yet to send him.
I am sincerely yours, [2123]
I promised a letter to your father. Tell him I haven’t forgotten him, but I’m truly so rushed with home duties and taking care of myself I haven’t had time to write. [2123]
R2. 10/10/31 EC’s letter to [2123]:
Dear Miss [2123]
I have had your letter on my desk for some time now. While I have wanted to answer it many times, each time I felt that I was unable to put into words that I would like to say to you. To have known you personally is to have loved you. To have seen and to have known you and your sister makes us feel like we must try harder and harder to be of service to someone.
From what you have written, and from what you have said, I know just the experiences you have been through. I have experienced them often myself. Much of this, no doubt, I am having to meet in this particular experience, for the manner in which I conducted myself in others; for we ARE WHAT we are because of what we have been, and coming events have their shadows cast by the manner of life we have lived. This, I understand, would make life very barren, very hard indeed, if it were not for that love which has been shown us by the Father through the Gift of His Son, who is ready and willing to bear our burdens and to blot out those things that would separate us FROM our better selves, by taking them upon His own self. So we may, through the applying of HIS laws - God’s laws - in this material plane, using those things He has given us in the proper way and manner, make our lives more and more in accord with His. This is true, whether in reference to our mental bodies, our physical bodies - and His law is the law of Love. He rejoiceth no more in sacrifice. He rejoiceth not that we have trials and tribulations, but has made a way of escape form these, will we only come to the consciousness within our own selves. If we will only come to that understanding, that when He knocks, or when He calls, “Be not afraid - It is I; My Peace I give unto thee.” Not as the world gives peace, but as that which lies within HIS abilities to blot out all these things that would hinder, or that beset us, that make the way hard.
It seemed a pity we did not get to talk together, as you expressed yourself - and as I felt the desire often; but those circumstances, those little hindrances. Then we should know that within our own selves those communions as He would have are possible, and in Him is that grace and mercy, and peace, that makes the understanding that the WORLD and others may not understand.
I’ve been wondering if you would be kind enough to let me have, or tell me where I might find, some of the articles you have written from time to time. Under what name do you write? or would you be so kind as to send even one of the magazines in which these have been published?
I’m certainly glad you had a pleasant trip home. Too bad you had the little car trouble. This, however, may have given you the opportunity to get your physical being attuned to the joys, as well as disappointments, that your mental being had experienced, and to get yourself more in accord and in attune with, “Thy will, O Lord, not mine, be done!”
I hope your sister found sufficient pleasure in meeting with the others, in the exchange of ideas and associations, to more than make up for the material losses she incurred during the stay. Too bad that we didn’t have the opportunity to talk more at length, but possibly when we are in Chicago sometime this winter you will be able to come in and see us
- so that we can then talk over the things that may make for a better understanding of all we have experienced together, and understand them in the way that He would HAVE us understand them.
One as sensitive and as high-strung as yourself (and as I find myself often) is hurt by remarks that others cannot understand should have any effect whatsoever. This, however, we must know - Think what it must have meant to Him as He said, “What? Can ye not watch with me for an hour?” we all have our Gethsemane, but how WONDERFUL is the thought that He will not let us bear OUR cross alone - unless we have shut Him out.
Yes, you will know all of these desires and loves again - for, as we know HIS love more and more, and as we come to understand it - while we may not HAVE those in the way that WE feel they should be, and as we would LIKE to have them, He has prepared a better way - and if we do not kick against the pricks, those hurts that come will be healed with that balm that comes from Him, in a way and manner that - as poor old Job of old received, the blessings double over. Many of us say, if we cannot have what we want when we want it, we do not care for it - but patience - Be Still - is all we may say to our own selves; for HE gives, He takes away, and the glimpses of our future experiences are bound up in the glimpses of love and companionship, and associations, that we have from time to time; and this short fleeting span of trouble we have here, if we use it aright, gives us those blessings that we will enjoy through the ages and ages yet to come!
Yes, we all have to learn, “Father, forgive them - they know not what they do.” Oftentimes this may be applied in those things that arise between individuals, even our own loved ones. I know just what this means. I have had just such an experience, and for years and years I could not understand. Gradually there has come to pass a SOMETHING that has taken place in the lives of those, that has changed, or has softened these tempestuous times with something - possibly the oil as HE poured upon the troubled waters - that something that enabled Him to walk ON those troubled waters, and the fear of the consequences caused poor old Peter to sink - but the soft word turneth away wrath, while grievous words stirreth up anger; and while grievous words from others may so rasp on something within our inner selves as to make us PHYSICALLY all awry, yet will we but turn our faces to the light, KEEP them there, farther and farther will be the shadows BEHIND.
Quite recently we have begun a study group with the people in Norfolk and Virginia Beach who have been interested in spirituality and its unfoldment in the various messages that have come from teachers in all walks of life, and we have undertaken to study the information that may be given such a group first hand. We are hoping that within the next year or so to have prepared a series of lessons that we may give to others, enabling THEM to find within their own experience and association, and field of endeavor, that which will be worth while. I hope you will be interested in these lessons, interested indifferent groups within the group. To ALL is not given the power of speaking in tongues; to all is not given the power to be healers; to all not given the force necessary for teaching or interpreting, or ministering - but it all EMANATES from the one source. If you would like to have these, I am sure Miss Gladys will be glad to prepare any of them that you would like to have, that you may study along with us - and before very long be a teacher, a minister, an interpreter, in your OWN surroundings, among a group that you may interest in such spirituality as may arise from a closer association with the divine realities that may be brought into the experiences of those that seek. “Seek and ye shall find. Knock and it shall be opened unto you. If YE will be my people, I will be your God.,” This has even been the message throughout all the countless ages, but when we turn away - and we attempt to have OUR way - we create such a personality as to efface the marks of the living God Himself from the activities of the day; we build unto ourselves altars on which we offer strange fires.
I certainly do hope that you will soon be able to have all the treatments in such a way as to receive that awakening within your physical being itself, as to bring about those changes that you are so desirous of having. I believe with all my heart this may be accomplished, and it WILL be - with your keeping in the way, keeping in attune with the good things that HE has set before you.
Let me hear from you from time to time, won’t you? Write us as often as your own heart and conscience directs you. I’m always glad to hear from you, for I have come to rely a great deal ON you for that necessary strength to be of aid and help, and counsel, to others. In UNION there is strength. United we may stand, in Him.
With love from all here to you and yours, I am
Ever the same, [EC:GD]
R3. 10/19/31 Letter to GD:
Now about my physical condition. I’ve left it for the last so as not to tire you too much. The very next day after receiving your first letter I sent for the ash, and within a few days the ash came. Immediately I began taking it as directed, and immediately my nerves went to pieces. I trembled from head to foot, and twitched like a nervous wreck even in my sleep, and my heart, oh my goodness! it almost tore my sides apart, but still I kept on with the ash, hoping that a great change for the better would come. At last, after one most terrible, terrible night, and I felt that I was going insane, I felt that I was passing into a dozed stupor. There was a cheery feeling at the back of head, and my eyes had black spots on the lids as though some one had hit me. The next morning I felt too sick to get up. I tried to dress but shook so badly I got back into bed. Every nerve was twitching and pulling and my mind was like one drugged. I couldn’t think. Then my right limb, which in all the years of my life, has never bothered me, began paining. The pain grew worse and worse, and I became hysterical. I lay in my bed and cried softly to myself. The pain kept getting worse and I trembled so badly I began to be alarmed. And I began to believe the ash was not agreeing with me, and never would. I stopped taking the ash, but I actually believe I’d went temporarily insane had it not been for my electric blanket. I was just crazed with pain and twitching nerves. The heat of the blanket is all that saved me, for over three days I was actually dreadfully sick. I never want to experience such torturing sensations again, or the pain and twitching of nerves. It has been exactly 8 days since I stopped taking the ash and I’m just beginning to feel like myself again. I lost so much flesh I’m fairly skin and bones. My right limb bothers me a great deal yet, but I hope that the oil and rubbing will bring it back to its normal state again. It pains so above the knee.
It’s quite possible that the ash would not have effected me as it did had I been having the massage treatments. The massage would have circulated the blood as it should be circulating throughout my body, and the ash would have worked accordingly. As it was it did more damage than good. However, I don’t hold that against Mr. Cayce’s reading. This is another trial for me to endure with as much patience and hope as I can. For it means I can never have the right and necessary treatments for my body until I can make the money to pay for the treatments myself. How long it may be before I can do that very thing I can not say. But at any rate I’m not complaining or acting sad, for I know - and I did know even before my life’s reading that within me lied the power to materialize my three greatest wishes. To make money - to be healed with the money as it is used for massage and electrical treatments for my body, and to give my parents the material goods my heart craves to give them. The third wish is probably too sentimental to write in a letter, but since this letter is sent to one of my own sex it is allowable to say my third wish is to have a baby of my very own flesh and blood. Had I been alone with Mr. Cayce and just the conductor and you I’d asked him if I could give birth to a normal baby. If he said no - my child would be deformed if ever I had one - I’d never in all the world have one. This doesn’t mean that I’d never marry. Ah, no, there can be marriage without children. I think of what a very famous specialist who examined me in New York City told me. He was a very wonderful elderly man and when I asked him if it was possible for me to have a normal baby if I married he said he didn’t see any reason why I shouldn’t, but I would have to undergo a Caesarian operation, he thought. Then he very carefully explained to me how and what I could use to prevent conception. I always felt so kindly toward that doctor because knowing, as I do, that all doctors are liable to a $5000.00 fine for giving out information to women on such a delicate subject as birth control. Of course at that time Gene and I were in love and I had expected by this time to be married. But ever shall I think kindly of the famous specialist and hug closely to my heart the precious secret he told me, and maybe some day - maybe some day sooner than I ever imagine or can hope for - there will come some one equally as fine as Gene - and my great hunger for love will be satisfied.
Please tell Mr. Cayce his letter came at a time when I needed it most. It was a beautiful letter. It gave me strength and hope and faith. It will be some time before I can answer that letter as I am using every wakeful moment I can spare from home duties to write. It’s my eager desire to finish my novel before Christmas. It takes much steady concentration and application to write it as nearly correct as I know how, and I do so pray that it will be acceptable. All that I am or hope to be depends on my mind and the stories I visualize through it. The material good derived from my stories means material goods for others. Mr. Cayce included.
When ever it is available for you please let me know if Mr. Cayce still give the horoscope readings. My three sisters at home would like to have one each, and do the horoscope readings cost the same as the life? Are any questions allowed with the horoscope readings?
Well, Gladys, this is a very lengthy letter. May it not tire or distress you. I waited until the last to say a hearty thank you for the reading, yours.
With much love to every one of you,
Sincerely yours, [2123]
R4. 1/5/32 [2123]‘s letter to EC:
…, Illinois.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
How strange life is, and how much we humans can bear. This makes the third time since I visited with you people last August, that I have been confined to my bed. And as I have lain here these two long weeks, beside myself with physical pain, I have thought many, many times of you. How comforting it would be to have you come to my bedside and clasp my hand in a warm hand-shake. But miles divide us, and our problems are our own; we must stand alone with God and carry on in the manner that we are shown from this higher source. I will comment very little on my illness except to say that I fell down a flight of cement steps and cracked the lower part of my spine. This, according to medical men, will require time to heal. I dare not think or say much about it for having all my hopes and dreams shot to pieces three times in succession has just about sapped my strength and determination. All since August.
I wrote to Gladys about the affects of the powdered ash. It made me very, very sick and I suffered agony, but I thought that was the results of not having the remaining parts of the treatment advocated. However, since it is absolutely impossible to have those massage and light treatments I have taken no more of the ash. The mixture of gasoline, sassafras, mustard and cedar is the most wonderful liniment I have ever used, and I have used all kinds. I used it on the days you told me to just as though I were having the light treatments. I rubbed myself faithfully every evening on those days, and I surely noticed the effect it had on the muscles. It also relieved me of much of the terrible pain I have in my back day after day. And when I was in Virginia Beach folks said so dumbly, so bluntly, “Why, you never have any pain, do you?” I wanted to scream when those words reached my ears. And if I didn’t smile I can’t be blamed entirely. Yet in my own heart I said to God, “I thank thee, Heavenly Father, that thou has given me the strength to bear my pain without it making traces on my face.
Previous to the fall which has put me in my bed now, I had a fall that tore the muscles on the left leg, which has healed beautifully, but the scar of which I will bear all the days of my life. After this last fall the doctor said to me, “[2123], your mind moves so fast your body can’t keep up with it. You shouldn’t be doing this laborious work on the farm, quit it and use your mentality for your literary work.”
Well, Mr. Cayce, I felt that I should do everything I could to help my folks. All my other sisters and brothers work hard and turn in their money for the paying of the notes father has signed his name to, and I felt that I should do as much as I could too, but I have given up everything now. That is, I no longer have chickens to take care of. I gave them to my mother. She can do as she pleases with them. It is understood that I am not to go outside to do any more work when I am able to be up. I can’t ever tell you what a comfort and peace this has given my mind. From now on I will do only housework and devote as much time to my writing as I can. I have done very little writing since I saw you, and there has been so many wonderfully interesting things to write about that it just seemed at times that my soul was starving to write, but from now on an opportunity will be afforded, I believe. At any rate I am fully convinced that God intends that I should do mental work entirely. When I am able to be up and my active self again I intend to do doubly the creative work I enjoy.
In the fourth paragraph of your letter you ask me if I will be kind enough to send you copies of some of the magazines in which my work appears. Now I haven’t had much in the way of articles and short stories, mine are mostly poems, and at present I am writing a series for “Our Army Magazine,” that is a series of poems. The article which I am proud of I sold to Psychology Magazine last May, as yet I haven’t received a penny on it, and at the present time the magazine is in the hands of a friend. It’s a complimentary copy from the editor and the only one I have but as soon as I get it back from the friend’s home I will mail it to you. The article bearing my name appears in the September 1931 issue. In “Mind Magic Magazine,” August issue appears a short story about a thousand words. It does not bear my own name but a non de plume. Since the acceptance of the article and short story I have sold nothing but poems, and the poems are very short ones. As you probably know poetry doesn’t bring wealth for a beginner. When I become as famous as Edna St. Vincent Millay then I’ll probably ask you to read every poem that I write, for I’ll be getting money for them then. Nevertheless, I keep writing verses for both pleasure and the means of bringing my name to the front - to the public’s eye. However, don’t feel slighted because I am not offering to send you every magazine or pamphlet in which my work appears. They, my work, are very insignificant. I give the best that is in my soul, but in comparison with your learned knowledge and worldly experience my writings are merely a grain of sand, but I will keep my word about the article. It may be quite a while before I get the September issue of Psychology back. When I do I will forward it to you.
I was very happy to learn that you are expecting to be in Chicago this year. I don’t believe there would be anything I would enjoy quite as much as being in your presence again and talking with you. I fear I should burst into tears of genuine joy in seeing you again, but to be honest, I can’t make any plans of seeing you. There might be an opportunity opened in which I could get up to see you during your stay; I won’t make any promises because I want to keep my word if I do. You, know, though, that deep in my heart I should love to be with you again. To talk and talk with you! Could anything be more satisfying? I am truly sorry that I can’t ask you to come and stay as a guest at my home. I believe you understand how conditions and circumstances overrule my most earnest desires. Things have changed to some very bad aspects since I saw you. Things have come up that has almost broken my heart. There seems to be a perpetual inharmony between my parents - things which are baffling, and which I can’t write about in a letter. It is enough to say that things have occurred that makes it necessary for me to stay at home every moment of the day if both parents are here at the same time. It’s impossible for me to even as much as take a short ride with a friend. It’s been harder to say no, to an invitation like a ride. I’ve come to realize how and why girls do things that seem so improper and ridiculous in an outsider’s eye. I, myself, wonder if I am a sinner, for recently I have suffered such untold anguish hearing my parents quarrels that when a certain boy friend of mine calls, and it’s absolutely necessary for me to sit at home for Mother’s protection, I’m broken down and cried and let him love me. Of course we’ve been pals since we were kids, but then we aren’t lovers. He consoles and comforts me, and we laugh and chat together, but when he is gone I don’t dream over his caresses. That’s what makes me wonder if I am a sinner. Am I making myself cheap, and am I doing a harm to him? It is as I told you. After I lost Gene something preciously sweet left my life and has never returned. More and more I feel the loss of it, and while I want to be loved and love there isn’t one who can take Gene’s place - so far. I have friends galore, people near and far love me, and yet, do you know, I feel utterly alone? And since I have been in bed these two weeks the most wonderful letters and messages have come to me, yes, even friends have come with gifts and warm caresses - and yet, so utterly alone I am in this world. It seems strange that I should feel this way, but I rally do. Stranger still that I should tell you all this. I trust you.
A most wonderful experience came to me New Year’s eve. I shall always remember it as long as I live, even if I hadn’t made a note of it. It was a dream - a most unusual dream! My grandmother, on my father’s side, whom I never knew because she passed away years before I was ever born, came to me and told me facts about her people. She told me an experience of her cousin’s, about the Indians in her great grandmother’s day, and of a certain death in their family; she talked to me just as real as though you and I were talking together. She even told me what had caused all the griefs and agony and trouble of our family. She spoke about my parent’s inharmony and what had caused it, and then when she started to leave me I cried out “Oh, Grandma, can’t you tell me something about myself?” She spoke to me but I couldn’t hear what she said because it seemed as though a certain member of my family called me away from the presence of my grandmother. While I was following the summon of the family’s calling I noticed a cloud of smoke rise up in a valley, and then a great explosion of fire, which meant the destruction of many people and things - those whom I loved. I cried out in pain and grief, and suddenly my grandmother came to me and said softly: “Thou beareth all things, [2123], go on.” The peace and quietude of her own heart stilled my fears and grief, and she spoke softly. “It becometh the Ingrahams (that’s the name of her people) your people are all saved.”
When I awakened from this supposed-to-be dream I was as positive as I am now that my grandmother had been as near to me as any earthly being. She talked to me as clearly and distinctly as any person, which convinces me that it was not a matter of my mind and mixed thoughts, but an experience in the other world. I was not one bit afraid. In fact I was overjoyed with this beautiful communion. I can’t quite understand this myself, since I never knew my grandmother, but I don’t believe it foretells sorrow and greater trials for me, do you? How do you interpret it? I really want your opinion.
Before this last illness I was to be [in] a big party of very learned people. One man whom I had never met but who had heard much about me challenged me, in his own mind, to dare to tell him anything about his life, his feelings and work, through the reading of his palm. So keenly alert was my mind that evening, and so very determined was he that I couldn’t tell him one single thing, I read his thoughts as clearly as if he had spoken them. From across the room, where I sat from him, I began telling the crowd about this man, actually telling some of the innermost secrets of his heart and mind. You should [have] seen his eyes, and watch the tenseness of the crowd. Breathless they were, and fairly siting on the edges of their chairs. He sprang up from his chair and rushed to my side and squeezed in beside me on a divan where I sat. He took my arm and squeezed it so hard I almost cried out with pain. “Girl,” he said, breathing heavy and fast, “you’ve got power - you’re wonderful - read my palm and tell me everything.”
When I had read his palm, of course getting that inner spiritual vibration, he told the crowd that I was the only person in all of the 45 years of his life who had ever looked under the mask he wore on his face. That he had successfully hidden his life from every one. Of course I was pleased at the success of my reading. But I am telling you truthfully, I was that weak when I came out from what seems to me to be a higher plane of life, that actually I felt unequal to the excited crowd milling around me. Every one clamored for a reading and answered questions. At last I had to tell them to please sit back in their own chairs and I would take each one in turns, that this was a power I had and I could not use it when they huddled around me in such an excited mass.
Since I need money so badly I have often thought of telling fortunes for money, but I believe one has to have a license for that and I don’t want to be listed with the fakes and Gypsies. I do know I have a power to contact thoughts. The bad part of this is that I know and feel the unkind things people say and think about me. If they think they’re putting one over on me they aren’t, that’s all.
I would surely enjoy being with your spiritual group when they study their spiritual lessons from the various teachers. Of course I am interested in your lessons to want to study them myself, but as far as starting a circle in my own surroundings I say no, positively no! You will understand when I tell you about a good joke on myself - and laugh too, for I did, because only those so ignorant and lacking in understanding could have said what they did about me.
It happened at a big social gathering in our neighborhood that we bean to talk of things spiritual and of what the stars and numbers and lines can tell of one’s life, and how one can prevent much unhappiness by understanding these forces. A young doctor and I became so deeply interested in the subject we were wholly unaware that those others were all eyes and ears for what we two believed and had experienced, and lo and behold, the gossip came out that he and I were drunk that night and had delirium tremors, and instead of seeing snakes and animals we talked of unheard of subjects. That’s a compliment to our intellect, isn’t it? It’s enough for me! I would never consider a plan in which these people around me might look to me for greater spiritual understanding. No, you do not know this neighborhood or the German people like I do. That does not mean I do not willingly give of my knowledge and what power I possess to help them. I most certainly do. But they have their own God and their beliefs. They think I am a little off my base when I say my hell is right here on earth, including my heaven. One thing I can say honestly, and I mean it, for every hour of hell I have endured on earth I have had just twice that of heaven. I suffer the pangs of the damned but I thrill to the joy of every good thing. And if there is anything nicer than being loved by people I don’t care to know it. When people love me, and I know that they do, then I know I am doing as much as I can in the Christ like way.
I am reading the book the “Master Key.” It is the most wonderful of its kind that I have ever read, and I know that I shall be greatly helped by it. As I go through life I see that I must have greater power to concentrate. I must refuse to let other things interfere with the perfect picture of a normal body. I will attain my birthright and do the things I long to do. Since I have been laid up in bed I believe it has been a means of showing me I must take more time for serious spiritual thought. The night I talked with grandmother I saw myself a normal girl - I saw my spine straight and beautiful like my sisters. And this is the first time in my life that I have ever experienced this, in as much as I saw myself nude and standing erect.
I also have something more encouraging to tell you. Since your Life & Physical Reading for me my home doctor has put me on a different diet and from 79 lbs, I now weight 99 1/4 lbs, all this since Sept. 4. I can feel the strength and blood coming into my limbs and spine, and with the liniment, which eases pain so quickly, I know I shall gain daily. And of of these days all debts will be paid and I can have the right treatments. Until then I am going to try to be as patient and hopeful as I can and do as much for myself as possible.
Each day I appreciate more and more the two Readings I possess, and I sincerely hope you are given greater power and better opportunities to carry on this work of yours, which is as near the Christ as any living man has ever had since Christ’s life here on earth.
I am sending you another dollar to apply on my Life Reading. I still owe you twenty-three dollars; I am sorry I can not pay in one big lot. Maybe one of these days I will receive the check I deserve from Psychology Magazine. I am beginning to believe they’re as hard up as most publishing houses. It is a certainty I have waited patiently and log for the money, which hasn’t arrived.
It has been a long, long time since I have written to you, but I believe this lengthy epistle will take the place of any letters I haven’t written but should have. I have every good intention of writing to Mrs. [2112]; she may forgive me for waiting so long. Troubles and sorrows, including the passing on of a beloved friend, have beset me. It has been very hard to keep my head above the high water-mark, so to speak.
Did you have an old fashion Merry, Merry Christmas? Ours was very quiet. We did not have a true nor big Christmas dinner party as usual. But we enjoyed being together among ourselves.
With Best Wishes for a Very Happy New Year, and Many Joyous Blessings for Every Day, I remain as ever
your loving friend, [2123]
Please give my regards to each and every member of your family.
R5. 2/10/32 GD’s letter:
My dear [2123]
Please forgive me for such a delay in answering your long sweet letter [10/19/31]. It was certainly appreciated. I kept intending to write each day after I received it, but as so many things happened shortly afterwards that I didn’t get to letter writing at all. You were so kind to send me a numerology reading. I am filing it in the book with my other readings. Your letter was also an inspiration to me. Your understanding and insight is very unusual. I mean, it is very seldom that one sees into the “inner workings” as you did while here, even though you were with us such a short time.
No, Mr. Cayce doesn’t give horoscope readings any more. You see, the one of me that I sent to you was given way back in the old days before we knew there was such a thing as a life reading. One day in a horoscope reading, he said “A horoscope reading on this individual would mean little, while a life reading would be very much worth while.” From that developed the life reading, which only gives a summary of the planetary influences (more from sojourn on the planets than from their position at birth), and the individual’s will becomes the guiding factor - either using the good influences to speed them along the ladder, or letting the bad influences overcome them, I am sure you will be able to give much through your understanding of astrology. A way will open up for you to develop this ability more and more.
Yes, my dear, I AM happy! More so of late than ever before. It seems that every day I realize how fortunate I am to be so situated. Not only am I possessed of a healthy physical body, but strength to carry out my main purpose in life - to be of help to others. I have certainly found that true happiness can ONLY come through serving others.
I think Mr. Cayce mentioned to you our Study Group. We are so blessed in having this opportunity to study the work firsthand. From the readings we are preparing lessons to go out to other groups. If you would like to have copies of the readings from week to week, from which we are preparing the lessons, Mildred and I will be glad to see that you get them. I’m sure they would be a constant inspiration to you.
[2123], I’m wondering if you took the ash IN the capsule instead of pouring it onto your tongue when taking. I didn’t remember whether I told you to take it that way or not. It always should be emptied out of the capsule, so it will get distributed through the system, and the light SHOULD be used
- else it will NOT get distributed properly. I do hope you have been able to keep up the massages, and that you are finding a great improvement in your condition. Why not get a check-up reading and see just how your condition has changed? I’m sure Mr. Cayce would be delighted to give you one. A check-reading isn’t as hard on him as a first one.
I’m sure he wouldn’t want you to hesitate to ask if you really desire to have it, or need it.
R6. 2/15/32 EC’s ltr. to Miss [2123]:
My dear Miss [2123]
Many times I have tried to quiet myself sufficiently to attempt an answer to yours of January 5th, such as it truly deserves, but I seemed to have been lacking in that something necessary to bring the proper response. This morning I got all-fired mad. Possibly the most quieting thing in such a case is to write to someone whom you know is a living example of patience, persistent fortitude, and love manifest for others under the most trying circumstance. In fact, I feel ashamed for ever speaking a cross word, or making uncomely remarks about anyone, no matter what they’ve done to me.
Yes, it does seem too bad that we are not permitted to enjoy the closer friendship that would come from being able to run in occasionally for a warm handclasp, for a word of cheer, or being able to get mad with - or laugh with - those who mean much. It is hard to understand why you have to go through so much pain and despair that must come from an injury to an already troubled body, but “Though He slay me, yet will I love Him”, for He doeth all things well - and will not suffer us to be tempted beyond that we are able to bear. Such words must often sound to you as just words - words - words - hollow, meaningless words, unless you have indeed caught a vision, or lean very heavily upon the arm of Him who was able from within to be the fountain of life for all about Him - and even the whole world, yet gave men the power to punish His body even unto crucifying it. Our bodies ARE crucified with Him, as we come to know His purposes, the better. We know that at best it is a very short span through this plane, and while many trials and turmoils, physically and mentally, arise - He understands, and sometime we will also.
About the ash, you must have taken the whole capsule - without emptying the powder onto your tongue or in water before swallowing. The capsule is only to measure the dosage, and the ash should be emptied when it is taken. Did you get it from Mr. Bradley? There have been some other powders on the market somewhat similar, but are for entirely different conditions and have a different effect. I would certainly like to know more about this.
I certainly am pleased to know that you found the rub a satisfactory solution, and I trust it has brought many moments of rest and relieved many minutes of pain. I would like very much to check up on your condition from time to time, if you will only let me. This is so unusual, I’m surprised at myself for just having said this. I do not believe I have ever said this to a single individual before in all my thirty-one years experience with the work. From your sending me a little contribution once in a while, I know you are feeling that you want to pay. Won’t you just let me try to help without thinking of that? If I can only be of some service to you, from this anxiety that must come from the suffering, I’ll only be too glad to do so - and will count myself as a privileged one to have in some way or manner contributed something of myself or that that may manifest through me, to the relief of suffering in that direction. Won’t you let us try?
I know how you feel, from your desire to help - even as the others are doing - to meet the needs of the monetary conditions, but possibly you can be of the greatest help to one and all by a greater contribution of your MENTAL self, rather than of your physical self. This conclusion I am sure you have arrived at, as your doctor told you - but that desire to make the physical function anyway is so very strong, it possibly has at times gotten you into trouble. Now that you are forbidden to use your body in getting about so much, you may have that opportunity to give out something of your inner self, or your soul’s visions, of your mental abilities, that will be worth while to so many others, and it will assist them in getting a vision of God’s benevolence to man in so many ways, that man so easily overlooks.
So far I have not been able to get hold of any of the magazines I asked about, but I still am looking forward to seeing many of these in the near future. I just today had a letter from one of the constant contributors to Psychology, and I don’t doubt but what this correspondence is going to ripen into something of a friendship. I hope it will be as beautiful as it appears from the surface.
Now that your work has been accepted in the magazines, it shows that you can no longer say it is insignificant - for with all the wonderful things so many hundreds have told me of my work, and what I have attempted to do, one of my fondest dreams was returned with a pink slip just a few days ago.
I had fully expected to be in Chicago, as some of our friends had planned on a little trip for us to organize a membership and possibly some study groups there - but since the unpleasantness in New York (although we were given a clean bill of health there), and the depression financially, we have not as yet made a trip. We are planning on a Congress at Virginia Beach between June 15th and July 1st, of those interested in the work - for the members and those interested in kindred subjects. Won’t it be possible for you to arrange with your sister, or some of the family, to have your outing or vacation at that time? and spend a few days with us. We would love to have you, and I believe your meeting with many of these would would enable you to get an entirely different outlook on your abilities. I do not know why your talents and abilities in some lines, as you have suggested, cannot be coordinated with some part of this work - and be included in the lessons sent to these study groups, as these progress; for, as you well know, that phase of the phenomena is a part of the whole. If you could see your way clear, and would like to unite the efforts, I do not see why at this Congress this could not be worked out in some way that may be interested in the work later, but enable you to expand your field along with your writings, in such a way as to serve humanity in a most wonderful manner. Think that over and let’s see if you can’t arrange to be here at that meeting.
It seems to me that this line answers your question. I don’t know who wrote it, or whether I’m quoting it properly or not, but it goes something like this: “Better to bless a heart and that deceiving, than to doubt one heart which if believing would bless that heart with heaven’s blessings.” I’m sure you understand to what I refer.
I’ll not answer all your letter at once, but I’ll send this along now - and the rest I’ll write as soon as I can get the spare moment. We are all fairly well. We seem to have made some very wonderful contacts that have brought us and others much happiness. All here send love and best wishes to you and yours,
Ever the same, [EC:GD]
R7. 3/14/32 EC’s ltr. to Miss [2123]:
Miss [2123] Route 5, …, Ill.
My dear Miss [2123]
I should try and write you at least another installment of my letter in reply to yours of January 5th. As to whether I can do justice or not, I question, but I am in hopes that I can say something that will be worth while and it will at least let you know that we are here thinking of you and remembering you from day to day.
We recently have moved from the north end of the Beach to what may be termed near the south end. We are now in what is known as the Pinewood section. Have two little places about a block apart so that we have the work carried on in one house and we live in the other [403 Lake Dr., 11th St. extended.], that is, we cook and eat there, although a portion of the family live in the office house also.
One would never suspect by looking out the window now that they were any ways near the ocean, for we have trees and leaves, gravel road and mud, instead of sand, that is, mud when it rains, also we are only about four or five minutes’ walk from the ocean.
It certainly was a most wonderful experience of yours on New Year’s Eve [262-16], and I am sure that you have had others since. If your interpretation of the vision has been right you will be able from time to time to gain more and more from the very presence of your loved ones and I am sure that the peace and quiet that comes from such experiences will be more and more wonderful.
I had a very beautiful vision respecting our study group here. It seemed that I was going into many portions of the country and at each place would meet someone of the group. In one of these, however, I saw you, but you were not in pain, nor were you even crippled or lame, and I knew some way I had been of help to you in overcoming the condition.
It is very interesting, also, about what you say about your experience with reading the thoughts of others. As I have said, I am sure there will be some place for your association with the work if you can only see just how it can be brought about.
Now, I have got to stop here again. This is only a very little note, but I hear some of my little chickens calling me. I am going to finish this the first of the week.
I certainly hope you are feeling a whole lot better. Don’t be so long in writing. All here send love and best wishes.
Ever the same, [EC:GD]
R8. 3/17/32 EC’s ltr. to Miss [2123]:
Dear Miss [2123]:
A few more lines today. We just had a letter from a Mrs. [2110] in your town. Is this someone to whom you have spoken regarding our work?
Regarding our lessons, I believe we will be able to consider distribution and study of these now very soon. We have had considerable number not of the local group, as in Syracuse, Long Island, Staten Island, and others who have been following the preparation of the lessons. The group meets at least once a week. Every other week we have a reading on various subjects which the information itself has suggested, asking direct questions ourselves as to our preparation for preparing the lessons. With the applying of the information in each individual’s life, each then becomes a LIVING contributor TO the lesson that is prepared. This is a little out of the ordinary, I am sure, for the lessons when finished are not the work of a single individual’s reaction mentally to that which has been expressed in the information, but are a compilation of the experience of each individual who contributes the lessons, and should therefore become LIVING truths, as I see it, in the lives of those who study them. We are hoping to begin with the distribution of these wherever there is a desire to form a group for such study, or where individuals want to study them - by the first of April, perhaps.
Your experience at the social was quite interesting, and I am sure that many an individual may gain such a state where others not knowing, not understanding by what they are being moved, would consider them almost any form of disturbance.
I have heard of the “Master Key”, but have never seen a copy of it myself. If it brings to you that which enables you to reach the things you desire, that is the very thing you need. Recently I have contacted a very wonderful individual, an old doctor [N. H. Prouty, M.D.] in Asbury Park, N.J. He has long since stopped practice, but continues to give his spiritual truths and interpretations to those whom he apparently feels drawn to from time to time. I don’t know that I have ever enjoyed a correspondence more. We are undertaking, through the prayer group here, some very practical lessons we have received from information through his suggestions as to what sort of questions to ask, especially regarding an individual who has been seeking aid through these channels for some time. It is proving very interesting and I believe very much worth while to us all.
I am sure it is going to be possible for you to accomplish a great deal, and you will be free and rid of all those pains you have suffered. Your body will be so much nearer normal as to lose all that strain that makes for such hard things in your experience at times, and as I said - when I saw you in the dream or vision - you were straight, no trouble whatsoever - and I believe it will come. I’m certainly glad you are feeling the life blood flowing more normally in your body, and that your weight is on the increase. All of these things will add to that which will bring about the regeneration in many ways. I’m glad you have found the readings we gave interesting. I assure you that is our whole desire. If we can bring more contentment to every individual, that seems to me to be worth a very great deal. We have come to a standstill if we become satisfied, but it IS well to be content with the lot we have, knowing that it is for our OWN understanding, our own awakening, our own cross to bear, our own Gethsemane. If we do not attempt to bear it alone, then we may be the gainers, but if we find fault - then we bring much upon ourselves, even that separation from His promise, that “Ye will not bear your cross alone.”
Be sure and let us hear from you whenever you have the opportunity. Know that we think of you, speak of you very often, and are looking forward to hearing from you again in the very near future.
All here send their best love to you and yours.
Ever the same, [EC:GD]

Dear Mr. Cayce:
I have been waiting to hear from a certain party in California before I wrote you at length, but as yet I have not one single word from them. I was very much in hopes that I could interest them in your readings and get them to become members of the Research and Enlightenment Incorporation. I feel it would be of great benefit to them, but again I must say I have not even a word from them, and it has been weeks since I wrote.
I shall try to reply to your letters according to dates. The first from you says you could only write to me after becoming really enraged, that my disposition was one to bring in contrast to your angry mood. Do not be deceived, Mr. Cayce, I have a temper, and once I do let it go you’d think the devil broke loose, but it, the temper, does not stay for hours, neither do I pout, and seldom do I lose it. One loses so much spiritually when one loses his temper that always I try to keep it under complete control. Of course there are times when I know I HAVE become a bigger and stronger girl for showing my temper and holding my own. At least it has made a lasting impression upon some folks who thought I could and would take everything. But the physical reactions has been damaging, and after all I wondered if these wouldn’t have been a more calm manner provided to win my rights if I had been a bit more patient and just known that God would have given me my just rights. The older I grow the more I see life’s harmony is merely a serious matter of using my brains and concentration plus application. As I told you long ago that when I learned to let go, and just relax and know that God is always looking out for my good I have been greatly benefitted.
You ask about the ash. The horrible memory of the torture it brought makes me want never to speak of it again. I think I gave Gladys full details but again I’ll repeat. At first I took it as directed, in powdered form on my tongue washed down with water. It made me dreadfully ill, so I thought I’d try it the other way, taking whole capsule. It affected me the same way, and the longer I took the ash the worse I became until I actually felt that I was really going insane. I thought it was because I didn’t have the ultra-violet ray light as you advised to use when taking the Ash. At any rate I have no intentions of taking the ash again until I can have the light treatments. Yes, I purchased the ash from Mr. Bradley in Chicago, and I got quite a lot of it, for I really intended to do as much for my physical condition as was within my power. All that I had hoped to do for myself has been a very heart-breaking disappointment. Finances will not allow me to have any of the treatments that you advised. However, I have taken courage and hope that one of these days in the distant future all disharmony will be quieted here at home and there will be an opportunity for me to seek the place that brings me solitude and comfort and an chance to build up the physical parts of me that are so badly in need of help.
I have been quite distressed since returning from Virginia Beach last summer. Many unkind remarks and hurting things have been my lot to bear. I carry on alone, so to speak. Further than this I don’t want to comment, but what I have borne has been sometimes almost overwhelming. This much I have learned that to find real happiness I MUST NOT depend upon any person or thing to bring it to me. I look within myself. More and more I crave to be alone, to study and think and pray. I still love crowds of people, and I know I shall never lose my great love for the throbbing mixed mob of humanity, but to cultivate close friendships, to become intimate with many people puts fear in my heart. It seems that I gave so much of my strength to people that after they are out of my presence and I’m alone again I’m so terribly disturbed I’m almost sick for days. Maybe it is because folks have talked so unkindly about me and my power of reading palms, and the ability to penetrate into their thoughts that this fear and sickness of mental anguish has come upon me. Whatever it is I only know my deepest pleasure comes by drawing the cloak of loneliness closely about me and pondering my own strange thoughts and good books of worthy authors. I’ve found untold comfort in being alone. God speaks to me in the silences. And yet folks beg me to come to their parties, they seek my friendship and I’m friendly with all and utterly alone in the midst of them. Did you ever feel like this, and am I merely passing through a period of adjustment and transformation?
I was talking with a very learned man yesterday and I told him just how I felt. That this desire to be alone was growing so strong on me folks upset me. He says it is because I have reached a higher plane of thought and state of mind than any of my associates, to my frame of mind I would soon pass out of this state of loneliness. It’s true that I yearn for the companionship of those who can delve deep in the things that are of such vast importance to me, but so far I give all, folks drink in what I willingly and gladly give but return an empty goblet to me. They say, “[2123], you make us feel strong and full of pep. Really, I don’t see where you get so much energy.” Of course I know, from God. I try to tell them they can get what I have, and more, but you know what a job it is trying to make folks understand things that to them is absolutely plain Greek.
It seems to me that you gave me a compliment when you said I was the only one in thirty-one years of experience in your work that you had to ask to let you give a check-up on my condition etc. Really, I know now that you don’t know my honesty and sincerity of heart. I would no more think of asking you to give me another reading either Life or Physical unless I had settled all debt to you. Why, Mr. Cayce, I love you, and I know what a tremendous strain is yours when you give those readings. You’ll come back at me and say “Christ gave and refused money, ‘and even as much as you do it unto one of the least of these my brethren, you do it unto me’.” Yes, I know that’s all true, and I am indeed very grateful to you for offering to help me. And some day you are going to give me other readings, I must have them, and I hope that day is not TOO far away, for I’m very much worried about my body, but I know I’ll be given the strength to carry on. Greater trials demand greater strength, and always that strength is forthcoming.
You speak of getting a letter from a constant contributor to Psychology. Will you please do me a real favor? Will you ask this contributor if Psychology make any effort to pay their authors. I’ve never received a penny from the editor for my article which was published in the September issue. What’s more he cut out many of the important paragraphs and took some of my very sentences and used them in his editorial page. I suffered all this in silence because I know that to get into print through a noted editor and big magazine is a tremendous pulling card, but after months went by I wrote them a kind letter and asked for a check. No answer and long weeks that went into months, so I wrote another letter and registered it demanding returned card. It came back all right, the editor got my letter, but as yet he refuses to send me a check. This is the only editor I’ve ever been dealt so unkindly with. And the list of editors who have been unusually good to me are legion. I simply can’t understand Henry Knight Miller’s attitude. Above all things he a psychic man. I’m sending you the copy I promised. It’s quite worn and doesn’t look as neatly as I should like to have it, but it’s all I have. Folks don’t handle my magazine as I do. After you’ve read my article on page 39, you can judge for yourself whether I deserve a check. I claim that I do for the article and its wording is originally my own.
I feel that if I were near you I could help you a great deal with your own writing. But I’ll never attempt it via mail. So many little things creep in that cause misunderstanding, and I’d be very unhappy if I lost your friendship. Writing’s a saint’s job. Above all things it takes solitude and harmony and love, plus health and determination. I wish you success with your efforts, you deserve all.
I’m really sorry you were disappointed in your New York trip, and equally sorry that your Chicago trip has been curtailed, but perhaps something finer is coming along to take their place. It would not surprise me if something just real nice would pop up. As for my going to Virginia Beach, it’s completely out of the question. If I had the money and a peace of mind, knowing I could leave here without slipping out of a duty, I’d pack my bag and baggage and leave for Virginia, and believe it or not I’d even give you a surprise. When I’d gotten located I’d be one of the unexpected persons to attend the Congress you folks are planning. As it is circumstances prevent me from making any future plans.
Thanks for the advice I asked for. I presume my actions have not been wrong. As Emperson M. Aurelius Antoniness said, “If any man has done wrong, the harm is his own, but perhaps he has not done wrong.”
I’m wondering if you have as beautiful a locality as the one beside the sea. That seemed such a fine place for your work, but no doubt you have even better working conditions surrounding you now that you have moved and have two separate places.
Strange, isn’t it that the very day you wrote me your last letter I had planned that day to write you and send happy greetings in a letter for your birthday, March 18th. You thought I had forgotten your birthday, didn’t you, but I haven’t, nor Hugh Lynn’s which was the sixteenth. No, I never made a note of either one, but I couldn’t forget that those two days were yours and your son’s. I hope that both of you had a gloriously happy day with all the appropriate things that go with a birthday.
How I long for that vision of yours to become a reality, to find myself as you saw me. But more wonderful than this must be your joy in realizing your own dream - of carrying out your plans in the fullest detail. I know that it will be the crown of your efforts and all things will work for your good. Good can never be denied.
So you are raising little chickens again. That’s a pleasure, for chickens are such human little creatures, but I never intend to have any more. I’m devoting all my extra moments to the work I love, WRITING.
That “ALMOST A PRAYER” is certainly good. Thank you so much for having Gladys send it to me. Why don’t you submit it to a magazine? You know the thought is so beautiful expressed. Were I you I should take it upon myself to see that this poem of yours went to the right editor. Again I say I know I could be of material good to you if I were in closer contact with you. I mean closeness of distance, not spirit. That last line in your poem - “Only the free soul blossoms - only the free soul grows!” is the very substance of pure thought, of rightful living. That expresses what I feel - and what I must have always to attend any heights of success - freedom.
I enjoyed so much that lecture you gave at the Monticello Hotel in Norfolk [1/15/32 - see 3976-8]. Gladys sent me a copy of your “PRESENT WORLD CONDITIONS”. I have studied it and keep studying it. You people are doing a wonderful work, and I know the study groups you have organized are a means of helping humanity to come out of this period of depression with same thoughts and with love in their hearts.
Duty calls me and I must draw this lengthy epistle to a close. I hope all are well and happy at your home. I remain as always
Sincerely yours, [2123]
R10. 3/28/32 EC’s ltr. to Miss [2123]:
My dear Miss [2123]
I have yours of the 20th. I also received the copy of the magazine which I am returning herewith. I appreciate very much your taking the trouble to send this to me. I cannot understand why the editor or business manager should not recompense you for such a wonderful contribution to the magazine, unless it is their policy to take and not give anything in return.
Too, I believe we are indebted to you for a letter we had from Mrs. [2110]. I certainly trust we may be of some help in this particular case. I do not know when I have had a communication from anyone that has impressed me as much as her letters have.
Miss [2123], I hope you understood why your letters came at intervals, rather than all at once - as I was trying to say something that might be of help, for that is the kind of letters that are worth while. No, I didn’t mean I had to get mad to write - but I’m sure you understood me - that when I was out of sorts, or had had something I felt justified me in being out of sorts, there was nothing I knew of that would make me find myself better than trying to talk with you. You would naturally have that kind of influence on an individual. Not that I was trying to “take it out” on you, but rather taking advantage of the situation.
I certainly am in hopes it will not be such a great while before you will be able to go on with your treatments, and that they will bring harmony, peace, quiet and comfort, to build in the physical in the way that makes it a better channel for the mental and spiritual to work. We recognize the fact oftentimes, in seeing a tree or plant, or an individual, growing up under such adverse circumstances, that the marks are left upon it; but God has given a great many the abilities to be of service to others, in understanding the use of the Forces He has put in the material plane, among material things, that will add to - in some manifested way - the correcting of these conditions, whether it is removing a clod, pushing a tree or stump out of the way, or making some correction in an impinged body, or some deflection by the lack of elements necessary for the proper balancing of the material conditions.
I am hoping that you will be able to overcome within your own experience any distressing condition that might arise from cutting things that might be said. These stings often make such impressions upon our very nature as to make for not only disquieting, but very hard conditions to be met.
I do not know just whether I wholly agree with you about constantly drawing within yourself and seeking to be more and more alone. Possibly the difference in our experiences makes for the difference in outlook upon associations or contacts. Have you ever tried the contacts that may be made through group meditation? that is, becoming a part of a group who have a specific hour to hold such communion with one another and with the higher forces, as to make the contacts felt very strongly? I do not know that such is appealing to you at all. Our experience has been, in our study group, that this is very much worth while to many individuals, and - to be sure - as we give out, or as we open our hands, hearts and minds to give out to others, there will be that bond of sympathy and union of purpose that brings aid to many. We receive from God’s bounty blessings that cannot be compared to anything material. Just that love as was manifest by Him for His associates. His followers, and those that He would have minister in His name. I know and realize that it IS necessary for us to enter into our closets, or into the silence and be alone with Him, and what we ask for in silence He rewards us very openly. Should you consider joining with our group, we would love to have you, and would love for you to feel yourself a part of it, love to feel that we might have your prayers, your thought, at our meditating or prayer hours each day. Let me know about this.
Possibly we might in some way be a help to you in this giving out, in aiding you to gain more strength, energy, pep, that vitale that comes from two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” That doesn’t always necessarily mean we have to be together PHYSICALLY, but in purpose.
My suggestion regarding the check-physical was nothing more than a wholehearted desire, Miss [2123] to be of help if possible. I will say nothing more about it, until you feel you would like for me to try. I’m sure He will give you strength to meet every obstacle, and understanding, and faith to meet every trial and test.
I shall certainly ask the Doctor about contributors to Psychology, and as to what the policy of the editor or business manager is regarding articles that are accepted and published. I see no reason why you should not at least receive a contribution, for the article is not only beautiful and well written, but cannot fail to be of help to every individual who has opened self for the Spirit of Truth to enter.
Yes, I am sure you can be of great help, but if the powers that be have willed that we be set apart - and that we have sufficient insight to know how to be of mutual help even though at some distance - then we will do the best we can. I’m still hoping that I may be in Chicago this spring, and if it is possible I certainly want to have a few minutes with you when I’m there - if I may.
There are many things for, and possibly a few against, our present location. We are not quite so close to the sea. The dwelling is on a beautiful little lake, that comes up right in the back yard. It is fresh water, and we may stand in the back yard and also see the ocean down the street - about a four and a half minutes walk from the house. The other place, where the young ladies live - and where we have the offices - is a little farther up the street - graveled street, but very nice sidewalks - and the building is in the edge of a very pretty wood. A little distance away there are some very beautiful pine groves. Having been in Virginia Beach several years, and not having lived except where we could step out in the sand, we haven’t gotten used to being here where there is clay and mud, and when it rains - unless we have a little grass or sidewalk - it’s just too bad! But having the woods and the flowers, seems to me to make us able to combine more of God’s blessings in this little vicinity. It will enable us to have a little vegetable garden, which we couldn’t do very well before. Then, too, we were able to get these two little places at a much cheaper rate - which is a very necessary adjunct under the existent conditions. But we have SO MUCH to be thankful for, we should praise God more and more. He from whom all blessings flow!
So you hadn’t forgotten about my birthday. It was very lovely for you to even think of it, and I thank you very much.
Yes, our visions and dreams - and our purposes - become realities in Him. He was able through the power of the Father to so glorify flesh, blood and bone in this world, that it might enter bodily into glory. “What ye have seen Me do, ye may do also - for I go to the Father, and as ye abide in Me and I in the Father, as ye ask in my name so may it be done unto you - that the FATHER may be glorified in you through Me.” These promises I believe. Constantly we must know, “Not My will but thine, O Lord, be done - as Thou seest we have need of.”
I certainly am glad you enjoyed the very meager efforts on my part to get something, give something, to others. I feel, Miss [2132] that the surest way I may obtain an audience in that Great Day will be in trying to say something, do something, that may make life itself more worth while to my fellow man. For that I am hoping He will overlook many shortcomings in me.
Let us hear from you whenever you have the opportunity. I’m glad to say that we are all fairly well. We have now - with the two families [His own family or household and his sister, Miss Annie Cayce and her household.] - what we have dubbed the “Lakeview Literary Society”. That’s it, laugh with us! It is SOME literary society! Each Sunday evening we discuss some portion of the Scripture. Last evening it was “Resurrection Morn”. Our next Sunday will be the Love chapter in Corinthians. The one a few Sundays ago was the Promise chapter in John. Each Thursday evening someone (and we take it in rotation) prepares a program; that is, that leading one for that evening gives each one a subject, but no one knows what the whole program will be until that evening. We just wish we had you here with us. I believe you would enjoy it. We are getting, I think, a great deal out of it. We learn something at each meeting, then as to how to express ourselves better, and we try harder and harder to put in practice that we gain from each one of these little meetings.
Hugh Lynn (the boy), spent Easter with his friend in Washington. All the rest of us were at home and had a very pleasant Easter.
Let us hear from you. With love from all, I am
Ever the same, [EC:GD]
R11. 9/15/32 Miss [2123]‘s ltr. to EC:
Route 5, …, Ill.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
You have waited so long for a letter from me, and for months I have not felt physically fit to write the kind of letter I wished to write to you, and although my nerves are almost all to pieces I am forcing myself to sit at my typewriter this glorious morning until I have at least told you I have not forgotten you and your wonderful work, nor will I ever.
Mr. Cayce, I believe I am on the verge of a complete nervous break-down. No one knows what I am suffering, and how every nerve and muscle in my body trembles day and night, and at nights I awaken three and four times with a start and the most awful terrible gnawing sensation around my heart and breast, just as though my heart were trying to beat something almost stronger than itself down, but I keep this all to myself. I must carry on - I must have faith and know that a better day is coming. Such heartaches and disappointments as I have gulped down this year.
When the thirty-first day of August appeared I thought of you and those wonderful moments I spent in your holy presence… last year. This may sound cruel and selfish, nevertheless, it is true, there is not ONE person in all Virginia Beach who means as much to me as you do and did. Your family and helpers are dear sweet folks. I love them just as I do others…it is so easy for me to love people and to understand them, but they were only being kind and sociable while you slipped away from the surface and brought back the things of the soul…the things of the mind and heart. You gave to me those moments of satisfaction that only spiritual things can bring.
Many a time this year I have contacted your folks’ thoughts and feelings. I have felt that the girls did not want me to write to your father, and somehow, I do not feel that he is an old man and old people do feel mighty disappointed when their expectations are frustrated. I enjoyed your father’s company when I was in Virginia Beach and I enjoyed his letters, and I would not make any comment now were it not for such an unusual experience as I had early this spring, right after your father went to Nashville. Halfway between here and the other world, I guess that is the way to express my state of condition at the time, I heard voices that told me things that was like a slap in the face. And to know that [421] is so deceitful hurt me very much. She will have to do more than return the negatives of those snapshots of mine, and give back the dime she borrowed from me in church that Sunday morning before I will ever piece together my shattered faith in her. Well, do I know I owe you a sum of money, and which no doubt you are badly in need of now, but I am trying to pay that, and it worries me too, for you see I have no way of making the money since I let my chickens go. I am relying entirely upon my stores, but so far my stories are taken and no checks are given. Psychology to date has not paid me a penny. They even had the nerve, after I sent a good friend in New York after them, to ask me to release all claim on what they owed me. God alone knows how long I will have to wait for a check from them, and some folks tell me I may never get one, but I refuse to give up hope. I know the money is rightfully due me just as much as I am in debt to you.
Beginning with the time of my awful injury last winter I started on a book length manuscript. It is now completed and in the hands of a book publisher. I do so much hope something really worthwhile is derived from my efforts. No one will be more grateful than I. Nine long years have I striven to make the grade, and all writers of note say it takes steady toil for ten years before any thing of value can be received for one’s effort, so if I get over the line with my book manuscript I will be rejoicing truly.
In your letter of March 17th, you wrote that you had a letter from Mrs. [2110]. Now, I can not say for certain whether it is because of my willingness to let people read my Life and Physical Readings, as I have all along, and for over ten weeks left a copy of my Life Reading in a quite prominent woman’s hands. She said hundreds read it, but the good it gave I can not vouch for. A Mrs. […] may have read it, I do not know, but do know I have tried darn hard to get people interested in your work, not only for the benefit they could give you in a material way, but for the spiritual uplift you would give them. Many are sick and need just your help, but they go on seeking aid of high-priced doctors. In my own case material means have prevented me from even having a little of the treatments your Reading prescribed for me. I guess that is one reason why my heart has ached so. You can not help but realize that I had hoped I could be benefitted by your Reading and do as suggested. How pitiful to know what to do, but have nothing to do with.
It is not with indifference that I read of the great progress you and your groups are making in the spiritual world. I rejoice and give thanks that so much good is being circulated throughout the world, and never a night passes that I do not remember you and your loved ones and business associates in prayer. I always try to take a few moments after the noonday meal for meditation and prayer, and I do feel and believe I receive the vibration of your group thoughts many and many a time.
During the last week in July I experienced such a unusual experience during the death of a dear friend I intend to write it into manuscript form and submit it to an editor. The lady who passed on lived about six miles from me and when she passed through to the other world I contacted her thoughts and the words she said to me. The fact that I knew nothing of her death until the day before she was buried, and yet that at the exact hour of her passing I was taken ill and hysterical because some one called so pleadingly to me, and reached out their arms to clasp me to avoid dying affected me so terribly I shall never forget it. The sensation was a painful one and very impressive, the more so because I could hear the woman’s voice as plainly as any human’s and then when she was laid at rest I felt her final message. But she is gone now - her voice no longer comes to me, and I never see her in a vision.
I was glad to hear of your friendship with the old doctor in Asbury Park, N.J. He must be a wonderful man who has lived fully and with good for all. It is such friendships that I value, and I hope as the years go by yours and his friendship will be more blessed.
It seems strange that I have searched through all my business letters and have put together all those from you and am now rereading them and endeavoring to make some sort of suitable reply. When your letters came, as they did in intervals, each were fully and most pleasantly enjoyed. Always you have been an inspiration to me as well as a help, and I do believe it has been since my association with you that my own spiritual power has become greater. At any rate folks who met me are always remarking about my ability to see things in a spiritual manner, but to myself I feel a gross failure. This year, more than any year within the last five, I am so sensitive of my physical condition. Of course I realize there are many reasons for it, but always before I was able to throw the seemingly condition to the wind and bear up beautifully; now I feel a real burden to the family. Some times I think it is my nerves. Ever since that injurious fall last winter I have suffered so with my nerves. You see I struck the spine in three different places. If things go well this next spring I want to be able to hear what you have to tell me about the body again. Perhaps there are some nerves affected that are giving me the trouble now. Of course we have much heavy work to do on the farm at this time of the year, and while I don’t go outside to help I assist with all the house work and fruit and vegetable canning. We have a wonderful garden and fairly make our living from it.
You speak of me becoming a part of a group who have a specific hour for silent meditation. Yes, I do that with Silent Unity of Kansas City, but no personal group. I truly know the affect of groups and help support them, but at the present I still retain that there is nothing I enjoy quite so much as being along to do the bigger and higher works of my soul. It has well been shown me the folly of giving my strength and time to those who are only surface deep - whose minds and talk are like a weight of melted lead on my heart. I find that tremendous thoughts come to me in my lonely searching of truth, and somehow, I believe God speaks to me quicker alone than through or with a greater number, simply because those of my acquaintances and friends are all alert to watch my moves and action. This, however, does not infer that I condemn your groups or the work they are doing. But you see the people whom I live among are not ready or willing to conceive of such spiritual things as you and I and your workers believe in. And somewhere in the Bible there is a verse about casting pearls to swines. I learned my lesson long ago, and I have paid a most terrible price, but all’s well now. I’m much better off alone. Please do not misunderstand me. And kindly accept my grateful thanks for asking me to join with you. I may be able to do so some day.
I am glad to know that you are located in such comfortable and beautiful localities. Of course being use to the sea will make no little difference in adjusting yourself to your new environment.
Would I not enjoy being a personal member of your “Lakeview Literary Society”? The things I should ask all of you about!!! There are so many things I want to know the why of, and there are just lots of things in the Bible that I do not believe any more than if I had written them myself. There is so much contradiction in the Bible. Any one who has really lived and seen life on a big wide open plane can soon enough reason things out for themselves. Oh yes, by all means would I enjoy your Sunday evening society. But perhaps folks would think me another Ingersoll. I only hope the society is still in full sway when I happen in Virginia Beach again, which I hope is sometime before many years.
Time is pressing and I must get to the week’s mending, so I must bid you adieu. When last I heard from your father he said your health was not up to par. I most certainly hope that you are in good health and getting much happiness out of life.
Regarding my associate membership in the Research and Enlightenment, Inc. It is absolutely impossible for me to become an active member as much as I should enjoy it and would gladly and willingly give of money. I appreciate all that you have done for me and I am in favor of the Ass’n, and I mean to pay you every dollar which I owe you, and until I do I cannot take on any responsibility with the Association. The bulletins are wonderful and will spread the truth far and wide, but I do not expect to receive any of the printed literature not assisting in the upkeep.
Sincerely yours, [2123]
R12. 9/24/32 EC’s letter to Dr. [539] (M.D.):
Now I want to ask you about something. There lives near your town a young lady whom you may have been called to see, who had a reading about a year ago. I think a great deal of her abilities, and yet I know from what she says that she has not been able (according to her own ideas) to carry out the suggestions made for her benefit. She took a portion of the treatment for a while, and then had another accident, so I think she has been confined to the house more or less since then. I know nothing of her family; I do not know whether they are able to pay for her treatments or not; I do not know whether she would even allow you to carry out the suggestions or not; however, I would like for you to see her. The name is Miss [2123]. I do not know just how far out she is. You may know all about the case and may be better acquainted with her than I, but I would certainly like for you to see her and tell me what you think can be done. If you could persuade her to let you see her reading (physical), it would be fine; then if you feel it necessary we could have another reading, and whatever the expenses would be in following it, I would be glad to contribute towards it whatever I could. In other words, I would like to see you try another case that has been pronounced hopeless, for she has an old case of infantile paralysis - very bad deformity, and some conditions that will be hard to cope with, as she has gotten to be pretty strong headed herself. What do you think? Would you look into the matter and let me know what you think?
I thank you for your letter. If you can do this for me, I would like to hear from you about it as soon as you have the opportunity to write. Please let me hear from you as often as possible.
With all good wishes and love from all to you and yours, I am
Sincerely, [EC:GD]
R13. 9/29/32 Dr. [539]‘s reply: ”…Well I went out and saw Miss [2123] this morning. I saw her reading - physical and life. Both were very illuminating and could be turned to very good use. May be that I would have had better results if I had waited and prepared myself for this meeting. After all one finds that one’s outside is a corresponding inside. I had certain misgivings before I went and I should have taken care of them perhaps - first. What do you say? You ask me for my opinion in the case. I did not make a physical exam of the lady because the opportunity for doing so was not indicated. I talked to the lady almost for an hour. She asked what I thought I could do for her. Well, I have so often told you that in my understanding all healing means a self-healing. If I could talk to you orally I still would have to say something like I want to put in writing. If I just could write like [Dr.] Prouty, but I am working differently. The girl is like we all were and still at times, standing in her own light. She is making a hindrance of her intellect in place of making it a handmaid to her indwelling intelligence. Perhaps as the case stands it will change for the better, easier and quicker if we leave her objectively out of our endeavors and wait until the greater intelligence will guide us, protect us and provide us with the right ideas regarding this situation in the whole. Some- thing then must open up that will “deliver the goods”. I am terrible about using slang and I like it. Are you shocked? At any rate “it’s a great life if we don’t weaken.”
R14. 10/1/32 EC’s ltr. to Miss [2132]:
Dear [2123]
I was indeed glad to have yours of the 15th, for I had been wondering a long time just how you were getting along and why I hadn’t heard from you. I’m sorry you haven’t been feeling so good, though I trust you will be able to control conditions so as to not have a nervous breakdown; for that on top of all the other things you have had to combat would be rather serious indeed. As long as we are able to get hold of ourselves, and hold on to the good we do see manifest of His Spirit and force in the earth, forgetting (not remembering) all the little slights, slurs and hard things that may be said here and there, He will be with us and guide us. IF we allow the negative thoughts to enter, they will magnify with the very weaknesses of the flesh so as to become antagonistic things in our experience, preventing us from breaking through the shell of pessimism to see the glorious light of the love that IS manifest in the earth today.
We have changed around a great deal since you were here. I have thought of you many times, and have spoken of you often to others as one able to overcome much of the weakness of the flesh in keeping the thoughts of the mental body on such a high plane as to disregard even physical suffering.
[2123], I certainly appreciate what you say about my being able to go back of the surface of things. That most of all I do desire to do. I want to be understanding, and understood, as near as possible; for if I am able to use whatever offices of faith, hope, cheer, good-will, temperance, patience, in assisting to bring to my fellow man one moment of such realization, complete understanding, or - as Abou ben Adhem - if I may be known as one that loves his fellow man, I feel that I will have contributed somewhat to the welfare and good of humanity. All good must come from one source, the God of creation. To me creation is continuing. He has left much of its work to His representatives in the earth. He has given us a pattern in His Son, and is ever willing to aid those hands who are willing to build according to the pattern. He has little time for those who prefer to make their own pattern, but is ever willing to counsel and guide those who use His pattern. That the materials become often confused by the manner in which our associates use them, may bring real righteous indignation - but never censure. Never may we sit in the seat of the scornful; never may we be the cynic; for do we know how much or how little of His presence has been with another individual? He IS the Lord of the just and the unjust alike. Because He sends His blessings upon those who have faltered, we should not become hard nor censure anyone. All of this, and more, you already know and manifest in such a glorious way so often, that it is needless to even mention it; yet often we like to remind one another that contentment in Him brings the most joy, that we are all seeking a happiness that is beyond understanding to those who seek so oft to have their own way rather than “His will be done in earth as it is in heaven.”
The work that the group has been doing for the last year would tend to make the thoughts run toward spiritual things; for those are things that are felt more and more throughout the whole country. This we see manifested by the expressions from others, as you have expressed it. Just the other day a friend whom I have not seen for several years phoned me from New York. Among other things he said, “Cayce, you will no doubt be somewhat surprised to know that four people who are intentionally known business men met for a conference this afternoon, and while the conference lasted for about two and a half hours at least two hours of it was conversation entirely about you and what you are doing, and trying to do, for others.” That many in conferences, or in conversation from time to time, give rise to some expressions that bring doubt, jealousy, selfishness and such, is not to be unexpected; for with the ability to be co-creators with our God we often forget our pattern and put OUR ideals in rather than His ideal. So, we shouldn’t judge these too harshly; rather in gentleness of spirit say, even as He, “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.” His love, His patience, will create within their seeking hearts and minds those necessary things to soften these feelings little by little. Let’s not become impatient, for in patience do we possess our very souls; that element, that something, that intangible something which may grow, and in growing become either the monster that would turn and rend, or the glorious consciousness of His love that makes the leaven that will ease many a heartache, raise many a hope that has been long smoldering in despondency and despair.
Please do not worry about the fact that YOU feel you owe something for my feeble efforts. You have repaid me many hundreds of times in that coin which is far above the price of purely material things, in the beautiful expressions of hope you have written from time to time, that to me have often been all too far apart. Know that when HE sees fit there will come those remunerations from your efforts in such material things for the repaying of such things according to your own thought. Do not hold out too much on the message that you may put down in black and white, that means so very much more.
Here is hoping and trusting you will have a wonderful report from your publisher, something that will give you greater determination to use whatever abilities you have in hand; for His promises have ever been that by the use of that in hand we gain the knowledge, the understanding, and the ability to use (not abuse) the things we desire. Those who have been faithful over a few things will be made ruler over many. If we know not how to use that we have in hand, how can we use those greater things? Would it not be to our own undoing? Is He not merciful, then, in not giving us those things we desire, because we have seen visions of the Elysian fields? If we have not known how to use that we have, what would we do with greater power?
Let’s hope that those long years have not been in vain, and that you will begin to see something in return for that you have been building for so long.
I have enjoyed more and more my corresponding acquaintance with Dr. [539] and Mrs. [2110]. I am hoping that within the next few weeks I may meet them personally, as I have come to love them very much. To me they are among the most worth while, most wonderful acquaintances that I have. I hope you will come to know them a great deal better. They both have had a great burden. In a letter I saw just a few days ago from him to another physician, he made some reference to my efforts in trying to help. That they have seemingly borne wonderful fruit, to be sure, is most gratifying. Apparently, from his letters from week to week, he has a most understanding heart, something of the greater vision, and realizes - as so few of his profession do, apparently - the opportunity he has of presenting the Great Physician in the lives of the people whom he meets from day to day. Should I be able to make this trip, I am hoping and trusting that I may have the pleasure and opportunity of seeing you also, even if it is only for a moment. May I?
It is the prayer of our friends, I am sure, that those who seek through these channels may gain a greater vision of the love that He would shower upon those who make their lives a channel of blessing to someone. If we come to the throne of grace, it will be leaning on the arm of someone we have helped. No need for me to say thank you, then, for your prayers. I am sure that in the praying you have received contentment, in the knowing that some time has been spent in praying for someone or those whom you at least feel are sincere in desiring to give the light of truth to those everywhere.
Your experience on the first day of July with your friend is unusual, yet the Spirit of Life is so much ONE that it is not a wonder we are allowed to glimpse from time to time the real Oneness of it all. Just what lesson, just how we may use such knowledge, is more and more the question. The bare fact that Life IS One, whether in the state we call living or dead, means very little to most of us. We say yes, it must be so, but what will we do about it? That is the thing in which we must study to show ourselves approved unto Him, that we may have more and more visions that will not continue to tempt the material manifestation to take wings and fly away, but rather that we may go to our fellow man now, while we are in this plane, and make known to them more and more the mysteries of life in its entirety. Let us be not like Dives, who would warn his brothers, but too late, the gulf had already been set between. While we are on the side of that gulf, that divide, let us make known His love, first claim it as our own, make it our own by giving it away; for “He that would have life must give life.”
I’m sure the recording of the vision can be made worth while, and that you may be able to use it so as to make experiences of others more and more worth while; for I believe our God would talk with His children, if they will but be willing to listen. Some of us have become so cocksure of ourselves, we step out and tell Him (if not in words, by our actions), “When I need thee, at some more convenient season, I will call on thee.”
Yes, I have enjoyed the corresponding acquaintance with the doctor friend in New Jersey. He, too, I hope some day to meet face to face. I’m sure he is doing a wonderful work. I hope I do not misjudge him, but I trust there may be more easily visible some of the Spirit that is guiding a real scientific life of one that all too often, I am afraid, has forgotten the real source of power.
That I may have been some sort of inspiration to anyone is most gratifying; by gratifying I mean it in the broader sense, though I needn’t try to explain, for I do love my fellow man and naturally we are drawn to those we feel have the greater possibilities. Even though those about us may not see that we see in others, isn’t there that something that is holy also? We must come into being through the desire of our God for companionship, in thought, in mind, in being.
Yes, I am sure you would enjoy being a member of our little group, or “literary society.” We give such a high-sounding name, and so few of us have had a full high school education. We have been selfish enough not to invite other than just our own immediate group, though we have visitors that occasionally drop in. The latter part of the summer we were favored with a young matron who had been somewhat of a star on the stage, having been leading lady for Otis Skinner for a season or so [Lucille Kahn]. She favored us with an evening’s entertainment supplied by herself, which was really enjoyed; reviewing what to me is quite a gruesome thing, yet even from the muck and mire the most beautiful lilies grow, “Mourning Becomes Electra.” We enjoyed it very much. We take turns in leadership, or in those that prepare the program or give out the subjects each week; and no one knows except the leader just what each is to do. Last Thursday night was my time again. I chose at this time the common everyday things that go to make up the elements in our physical bodies, from the material standpoint. It was very interesting to me, and I am sure was to all the rest before the evening was over. Of course, it gives such an opportunity to hear discussed subjects that may be of particular interest or abhorrences. It is all very helpful. Not only does it give us some definite thing for each week’s thought, but really draws us closer together. Many of us might really become tired of the associations, being so closely drawn together, unless we were able to see or hear the expression of all sides of the other fellow’s life.
I hope, [2123] that as the bulletin comes to your from time to time you will give us the benefit of your experience and understanding, as to what may be made interesting to such a membership as you know the Association membership must be. It is really a conglomeration, and that isn’t a good word, but those who approach the phenomena for the many hundreds of reasons; many because they are sick in body, many because they are sick in mind and soul, many because they have a grudge here or there, many because they have lost their way in despondency and despair, many because they are really seeking the right, many because they really don’t care. That we are not able financially to have a magazine at present may make it look like a circular, but it may be worth while to such a group if we are able to boil down one truth a month from which a few here and there may take hope; for God is still in heaven and all IS well.
My father has just come back from his trip to Kentucky and Tennessee. During the change in our residence, it was practically impossible to have room, so I contrived to make it possible for him to visit his sister and brothers and their families a while this summer. It may be his last visit to many of them, who knows? He was also a little while with my sister in Nashville (Sarah, Elizabeth’s mother [Mrs. Will A. (Mary) McPherson]). I finally got enough together to send for him, and I think he is glad to be here. He has his faults, who hasn’t? He has his good and bad points, who hasn’t? He is my father.
Let us hear from you. All send our love.
Ever the same, [EC:GD]
R15. 10/3/32 EC’s letter to Dr. [539]:
Now, about your visit - I told you, I do not know the situation. Possibly I am in the same position as Mrs. [2110] has accused you regarding Dr. Prouty; I may be too suspicious. If possible, however, I hope you will follow this up and attempt to aid this body, if you find it at all plausible or reasonable to do so. From meeting her once, and from our correspondence, I have come to have rather a feeling of great desire to be of help to her. I realize there is so much that has to be broken down, so much self- centeredness, that it is hard to reach her with that which would in many another case become very helpful; however, I know that I am going to have to leave all this in your hands, and I assure you that it is my sincere desire to try to help her. We are not to cast pearls before swine, I understand. This doesn’t sound very well, but let’s take the interpretation of this as the readings have given it. Casting pearls before swine doesn’t necessarily mean considering individuals as swine, or something of low estate; rather they are so pigheaded within themselves as to make any effort seem useless.
R16. 10/7/32 Dr. [539]‘s letter: “I think your intuitions are right about her and agree with you in thought that much good will be brought into motion here. I have written her, Miss [2123], today.”
R17. 1/4/33 Dr. [539]‘s letter:
Somehow Miss [2123] has been pushing herself into my mind of late. You know she wrote me a letter in response to the one that I sent her. I never said much about it to you, because I am sure that you are having plenty of correspondence as it is, and the attitude that Miss [2313] expresses in her letter is one of erecting a wall and locked doors to any sort of admission. However, I shall be glad to forward that letter to you if you think that will be the thing to do.
R18. 1/18/33 EC’s letter to Dr. [539]:
“From the first Miss [2123] has been an enigma to me. Often I have wished that I might be closer to her in her daily work and problems. Possibly an All-Wise-Providence has seen it best that I not be. There has always appeared to be such a wealth of possibilities, yet a little of something which prevents. We see no analysis of it unless we do accept what her Life Reading says about her; then we begin to understand. When we each see in a constructive manner, then there will be the coordinating with the All-Wise Constructive Consciousness of God.”

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Secretary The Association of National Investigators, Inc. Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I have read carefully, and with great pleasure, the material which you sent at my request, concerning the good work done at Virginia Beach under your directing, and I thank you very kindly for the booklets.
I am deeply interested in your work and the healings, which have come from the results of your readings. All the years of my life, which are thirty-three, I have suffered untold physical pain and mental anguish as the results of infantile paralysis, which attacked my once perfect healthy body, when a baby of six months.
Your method of readings are not mysterious, nor strange in my way of thinking - not by any means. It is the God in you that gives you this power, and my faith in the spoken and silent word, the right thoughts, and God’s everlasting power, makes me realize this fully and makes me feel that, at last, a healing is possible for me. That you are one who will show me the way seems inevitable. I know that you are capable of speaking to the God spirit in me, and by your reading you will show me what I must do to regain my birth right.
Learning of your good work is the direct answer to my fervent prayer for new life and health. Again it is proven to me that God does answer our prayers if we believe without one doubt.
I want to talk with you in person, and have a physical reading. I should like to leave for Virginia Beach today; if I had the finances I most certainly would. I am putting my entire trust in God to give me the necessary supply, that I may go to you as soon as possible and find out what can be done for me.
Are there any opportunities for a patient to help pay for his treatments by assisting in some work at the Institution? I am not in a position to pay for treatments, but I would be perfectly willing, and gladly too, to do any work that I could.
Sincerely Yours, [2123]

Miss [2123] Route 5, …, Ill.
Dear Miss [2123]:
I have yours of the 4th, and I feel that - for the present, at least - you will be very much disappointed in my letter. I certainly appreciate your feelings, from the hundreds - yea thousands - of experiences in just such circumstances, just such conditions, and such letters we have had from individuals through the years. Don’t understand that I am refusing to give the information, for I will make the appointment for you just as soon as possible.
As you no doubt understand, there has been an institution established here, where individuals have been treated according to that given, under the direction of regular physicians in sympathy with the undertaking. On account of financial conditions and stress that has come to bear on the work in the last few months, there are to be some changes. Just what these are to be, I do not know. We are to have a meeting of the official board the latter part of this month. At that time the policies and determinations will no doubt be outlined as to just what how and in what manner the work is to be carried on. So, as soon after the first of March as you find it convenient, won’t you write me again? I’ll be able then to tell you more definitely as to when we can make the appointment, whether it will have to be with you present or whether it may be made at a distance, and what opportunity you would have of coming to the institution, or just where you might go to have the treatments followed as outlined in the information. God moves in mysterious ways His wondrous works to perform. That this has been hindered is to be a proof positive, to a great many people, as to whether it is God’s work or something that has been trumped up by man himself. I’m leaving it, myself, wholly in His hands - using, though, and doing whatever I FEEL I am prompted by the spirit to do, and May His Spirit keep you and abide with you! Keep the faith in Him, and I’m sure sooner or later we will find things coming in a more understandable way and manner.
I want to thank you for your letter, and I trust this is not too harsh at this time. You will let me hear from you again, won’t you?
Sincerely, EC:GD

Mr. Edgar Cayce The Ass’n of National Investigators, Inc. Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I was indeed very pleased to receive your beautiful letter of Feb. 18th, and I trust that I have given you ample time, before answering, in which to take care of the very stressing business pressing your interest at the time of your writing, so now you can give me some definite information.
It is hardly necessary to say that I was not hurt with your frankness and honesty concerning conditions at the institution, nor the very improbable fact that there might not be an opportunity for me at the institution. If such is the truth I can thank God, for at the present I am being torn between duty to my parents, who need me financially and my desire to be free from physical pain and to walk without limping. I make a little money by raising chickens. Although it has never exceeded a hundred dollars a year, this goes a long way toward helping my parents. My father has done a very unwise act by signing notes for my brother, which has caused my parents to mortgage their home to pay those notes, and now the mortgage is coming due. At first I became very bitter and cried a great deal over what I still maintain was injustable. To sign notes, for a strong, well person, amounting to $20,000, and yet I was not given money for clothes or for a doctor who could treat my body properly almost killed me. But no longer do I grieve or feel bitter. Quite a while ago I began believing that something bigger and better was coming to me, and then I learned of your great good being done for humanity.
Since having heard of the institution, and receiving your inspiring letter a great peace and understanding has come into my heart. I have even taken courage to try to write articles for publication. Daily a beautiful voice tells me to keep on, to have faith, to believe, that just around the corner the greatest dream of my life - to again have a perfect body - is coming true. And now I have decided to work and save and help here at home this summer with the hopes that by the middle of next October there will be a place somewhere for me at the institution. And if this is not possible I will know it is God’s will, and will be happy about it, but either way it may turn out? Shall plan to come to you sometime in October, if such a time is convenient for you, for a personal reading of my physical inharmonies. I feel that I must talk with you, and that a reading at a distance would not be satisfactorily, because of the troubled state of home conditions, as in person. After a reading and a talk with you I may find I can get the correct treatments here. It would not matter who gave me the treatments as long as the treatments gave the desired results.
I will appreciate hearing from you, and knowing how conditions are at the institution, and what the official board decided upon for the policies of the work. I will be glad, too, to learn what opportunities are available for a sincere, earnest patient.
Please understand that I am not trying to get something for nothing. I do not think that is the right way to go about anything. I am truly intensely interested in the institution and your own personal work. And I do feel that it is the one place where I will find health and great happiness.
Sincerely yours, [2123]

Miss [2123] Route 5, …, Ill.
My dear Miss [2123]
Your letter of the 30th has come to me, and I want to thank you very much for writing me as you did. I want to assure you that it has been most helpful to receive such a beautiful letter.
Yes, the Association of National Investigators was ordered disbanded by the Board of that organization. To be sure, the WORK will continue - that is, that which manifests through me
- so long as the Lord sees fit to use me as a channel. With the disbanding, the hospital was closed. It would be very untrue for me to say that is was not a disappointment to me. However, I had known there was such a possibility, even years before it came into being - for we know, as we study the lives of those men chosen by God Himself, when they allowed selfishness, self-aggrandizement to enter in, they fell away. I am just hoping that I may conduct my own life in such a way, as to not be charged with being that cause of such an interruption in what seems to be such a beautiful and worth while work.
Last Saturday we had a sort of get-together meeting. There were thirty or more people present, some who had known of the work for twenty years and more - some who had only known of it for a few years - and some who had only known of it for a few months. The concensus of opinion of each and every one present (for all expressed themselves personally) was that it MUST go on, in a bigger, more far reaching manner than it ever has before. Surely some of the material things enter in, when we consider that at this particular meeting there were more educational men, more ministers, more lawyers, more doctors than there’s ever been at any such meeting for this work. This in itself must mean that it touches every phase of human experience, and surely if so many have found it worth while it must go on. We received dozens of letters from people from Maine to California expressing the same thing as those that gathered here. Just how soon it will get under way, of course I cannot say.
I appreciate, too, Miss [2123], what you have to say about your own situation - and your own surroundings. You know one of the most BEAUTIFUL things - possibly THE most beautiful thing taught us in the life of the Master in humbleness and humility. You seem to have gotten something of a vision of this, and I hope - as the Christ’s life awakens within yourself - you will find the shadows and the clouds fading away, and I verily believe that you will.
You touched rather a soft spot in me when you spoke about your chickens. I only have a very small place - fifty feet lot by a hundred and forty. On this is my house, a few flowers, just a little handful of garden space, and then my chickens. [115 W. 35th St., Va. Beach, Va.] Of course, I only have them for the recreation and the pleasure that I get out of them - and I’m sure you must enjoy your time with yours.
Yes, I’m sure you will get a great deal more out of the information if you are able to come and listen to it, and let’s just hope and pray - if it is HIS will and His way - that by the time you can come there WILL be some way provided for you to be just as close with the work as you desire, that it may be carried out here - and if not here that there may be some way pointed out, that will relieve your body of all those aches and pains. You may be very sure that all the healing MUST come from within, yet often is it necessary to apply all those things that have been prepared from God’s and nature’s storehouse to assist in that awakening to that consciousness from within that all MUST be well.
I would like to hear from you from time to time, and as we get any data together we will sent [send] it to you - if you would like to know what the people who gather here from time to time have to say about what the phenomena has meant to them, and is meaning to them. Every two weeks I make a little talk to many of our friends who gather to listen. Recently these have been published in our weekly paper [Virginia Beach News], and I am sending you the last two copies. Should you desire to have further copies, I shall be more than glad to send them to you.
Again thanking you for your letter, assuring you of my desire to be of help whenever possible - and in any way possible - and with kindest personal regards, I am
Sincerely, EC:GD

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
It was with great pleasure that I read and have reread, a number of times, your letter of April 4th, which has given me such beautiful hopes for the present and for the days that are to come. It is a joy to know that I can look forward to meeting you in person and to have a physical reading of my condition sometime this year.
The two newspapers reached me. I thank you very kindly for sending them, I also wish to assure you that I really derived benefit and pleasure from your two inspiring articles. If it is not asking too much I should be pleased to receive the newspaper containing your article on Numerology. I am very much interested in Numerology, having received two free readings - very brief of course - of my name and birth numbers from both Lorna Fantin, sponsored by Old Gold Cigarettes, and Edna Purdy Walsh, both whom speaks on the air on the subject of Numerology.
Yesterday was my birthday. I was born April 16, on good Friday, in 1897, which gives me a number 9 for birth. My full name is […], which gives a number 3, where added with last name. In infancy mother called me […] - there being so many […] in both families. When I learned to spell and write I began signing my name […] and carried it like that up until last January. That gives me a number 4 name, but when first signing my name like that I knew absolutely nothing about numerology, neither did my parents. Having learned a little about the power of numbers I dropped the M. before my name to give me two harmonizing numbers, two 9’s. However, there is really something noticeably missing in my self, it seems, since I no longer put the M before my name. I unconsciously yearn for that M. It was the pride of my heart.
Do you think that signing my name M. […] gives a number that is not in harmony with my birth numbers? If 9 is a number of love and compassion my soul surely lives true to its number.
Since I were a little girl I have had to work awfully hard on this farm, doing things that my soul actually revolted against - work that was too much for me and caused my back and legs to ache so badly I had to cry. Numerologists tell me it was the number 4 that brought me manual labor. Now I am beginning to wonder if this is true. Do you believe that it is true?
I don’t know whether to believe that a number 4 has been to blame for hard, hard labor, but I do know though, regardless of any numbers, that after hurting my spine seriously this last Fall, doing the work of a man, building farm fences, repairing an old shed, and chopping wood, I vowed I would never, no matter what happened, ever lift a finger for such heavy work again. Now it takes all the strength I can muster to keep from being bitter because my body is simply wrecked. I force myself to sing at my work - to keep smiling.
I don’t want to appear arrogant and egotistical, yet I feel it sincerely that God had another kind of work for me to do, and He does not want me to continue on as I have. I want to build up my mind and do some particular mental work for a living. I have felt this for years but only asserted myself this year. It is what I am thinking today that will be my future ten years from now. You make that clear in your article, and I have been thinking that for a good long while.
In my heart I say I’m going to Virginia Beach this fall to see you. That is my daily thought - my prayerful thought. I refuse to let anything mire that thought - just as for years I have refused, positively, to remain what folks call a cripple. The word cripple is antagonistic to my soul. It harasses me - pecks at me, as though I were a helpless atom of life bound by chains. Not having a perfect body has brought me agonizing sorrows and pain - sorrows and pain that neither tears nor time can ever wipe away - yet I’m determined to rise above all this. I feel a tremendous power within me that will make it so.
Right now I need a bit of understanding guidance and the right sort of companions. God, alone, knows how my heart hungers for a little love and affection. To hold one’s emotions in suppression for years is not a natural state of existence nor the safest thing to do. There is where chickens and animals provide a channel in which to release one’s most poignant desires. I find my chickens so human, so responsive to kindness and gentle talk, and my dog, a stray little thing, cast out on the roadside to die, is human too.
I took her in and she has never failed me. She is a true friend. I love that dog as though she were a human being. She is a faithful, loving friend.
I fear I’ve been talking entirely too much about myself. Please pardon me this time. I had not mean to become so personal.
It is really regrettable that the National Investigators was ordered disbanded. It seems that its particular kind of work is needed too badly to be dissolved. But it is inevitable that the Great Power over all will bring forth a way for it to reestablish itself again, and in a firmer manner than before.
It will please me very much if, from time to time, you will inform me of the progress made at the institution, and of any opportunities available for one to assist in the institution to receive treatments. Of course, as I explained in a previous letter, I feel it very much my duty to give my strength and material aid to my parents until late fall. My mother is 67 years old this August, and my father is 74 years old this July. I believe you can understand how keenly I feel my responsibility, especially in the financial strait that my parents are undergoing. However, that must not prevent me from going to you this year for a physical reading. I feel so close to God that I believe He will prepare and make sure the way. There is nothing impossible to God. This thought grows stronger and stronger in my consciousness. After the reading it is likely that the necessary material means can be found here in my own city. Whatever outside means must be provided for a healing God will bring them forth. I rest quietly and peacefully in this knowledge, safe in the hands of the Lord.
May I thank you again for your thoughtful kindness in forwarding the two copies of the Virginia Beach News.
May God bless your work and you and your family and friends,
Sincerely and appreciatively, [2123]
B7. 5/23/31 EC’s letter to [2123]:
Miss [2123] Route 5, …, Ill.
My dear Miss [2123]
Your letter of April 17th was received in due time. I have read it over many times, and have just wondered how I could answer such a beautiful letter in a way that would be in keeping with the thoughts and consciousness that must be arising within you, as you go about your daily tasks of love and duty, with that trust and hope that I may be in some manner or way be helpful. I just hope too that I may be a channel of blessing to you, through enabling you to gain a better control over the physical body and a better understanding of the spiritual things in life.
It is a great pleasure to send the papers, and I hope - as you receive them from time to time - you will enjoy every one of them. Should there be articles you would care to comment on, in your spare moments I would appreciate any comment you would have to make, any criticism that you might offer, from your own personal experience; for in this way we may be - through the exchange of ideas - a great help to one another.
May I ask WHERE you were born? I am hoping that sometime I may find the opportunity to get a reading for you which the information itself calls the life reading, which is something of astrological, numerological - but, as we believe from our experiences with them - more of a spiritual nature. It is necessary, then, that we have the full name given at birth, the place of birth, the birthday, the month and year. These we have, I believe, except the place of birth.
Yes, I think there’s a great deal in numerology, as you no doubt surmised from my article on numerology. [4/12/31 Lecture later published in the Virginia Beach News.] I myself have not been a great student, nor have I had great opportunities. So, most of my understanding has come from the information that has been given on various subjects through the readings; whether they were given to individuals seeking something or whether for myself seeking something on some particular subject.
I am sure, so long as you hold that thought in your mind, that you are coming to Virginia Beach this fall or the late summer, that - through some manner of means - the way is going to be provided for aid and understanding to come to you, that which will make your mental body rise above all the weaknesses in the flesh. Who knows but what the pain and the sorrow you have had to bear isn’t - and hasn’t been - that necessary to make your soul BEAUTIFUL, as I’m sure it is - and will be - for we remember the Good Book says, “Though He were the son, yet learned HE obedience through the things which HE suffered.” Not that we should GLORY in our suffering, but patience, consecration, casting out fear, casting out contention, casting out hard feeling for those who even would make our pathway hard, and we will be able - as the Psalmist said - “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of tears, I will fear no evil, for His rod and His staff they comfort me.” “Though He slay me, yet will I love Him the more,” for we know that in Him is the light. He has often spoken to men, and while the sordidness of the world has gradually changed so that we become, as it were, case hardened to the spiritual forces as may manifest themselves; yet we know, as was said to the children of old, “Think not who will go into heaven to bring him down, or who will go over the seas that we may hear or know, for lo! he is within our own hearts, or our own consciousnesses; and as was with one of the prophets it is not that he is in the STORM, the thunder or the lightening, nor the mighty works that we see among men, but rather may WE hear him in the still small voice that speaks from within! All healing, all correction, must come from within - and as you have said, and as you are realizing I’m sure more and more, all things are possible with God, but since the day the Saviour of men walked among men, He has left with HIS brothers, HIS people, that injunction, “Inasmuch as ye do it unto the least of these my little ones ye do it unto me.” It is men AND women that we must go for our AID in the MATERIAL world. The knowledge, the understanding, comes from within ourselves. Each and every individual is a reflection in his life of his conception of the Father, and as we walk in and out before men - as our daily lives are to those about us, whether the duty to our parents, the duty to our loved ones in the household, or to our pets, or to those that are about us - just as we see reflected in them the love and the beauty, the patience as we give to our chickens or to our dog, just as we give the same to our father or our mother, and to our brother or our sister, to our neighbor or to our enemy, we see the love of God reflected in our own lives. The bitterness and the pain is then gradually taken away, for we GROW in grace and in the understanding and in the knowledge of our Lord, and “If the Lord be with us, who can be against us?”
Yes, we will be more than glad to let you know from time to time the progress of the work here. Last week I spent a few days in New York with some of my friends there. We had a meeting to consider the carrying on of the work. I have never been blessed (or cursed, whichever it may be) with a great deal of this world’s goods. I can only say, as Peter and John as they went to the temple, “Silver and gold have I none, but such as I HAVE give I unto thee.” There was a wonderful response from my many friends there. They, combined with our friends here and over various parts of the country, are to hold a meeting in Virginia Beach on the 6th of the June for the formation of a physical organization for the carrying on of the work. I am sure we may count on your prayers at that time, for they will be worth a very great deal. If you could write a letter, such as you have written to me, to that group - assuring them of how you are looking forward to being here, to obtaining information through these channels, so that your body might be made at least tenantable
- it would mean a very great deal to all those gathered here. I would like to read it to them. I would like to read to them just what you have said in this letter to me, but if you could just write to this group - putting into words how you expect to be helped, and asking THEIR blessings and giving your blessing to each and everyone of them, it will have a wonderful effect upon that group that day.
Know that we are always glad to hear from you. Drop us a line whenever you can.
With kindest personal regards from each and every one here, and may His blessings and His peace rest and abide with you always, I am
Sincerely, EC:GD
B8. 6/2/31 [2123]‘s letter to EC:
…, Illinois
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Virginia
My dear Mr. Cayce:
I feel that your letter demands an early reply, and I will try to write the kind of letter you so deserve and are looking for, yet I will be honest and tell you I haven’t the spirit to write whole heartedly as I have in previous letters. Conditions at home at the present time are troubling me very much, and when I let outside forces affect me I lose that freedom of soul and thought that lifts me on higher ground and I find it quite hard to express myself in either written or spoken word.
In every letter I have written you I have simply “let go”, so to speak, and have let God direct my thoughts to you. From the very first that I knew of you I felt strongly drawn to you and after correspondence this sense of harmonious fellowship has grown. I can truthfully say I feel that same sense of closeness toward your fellow workers and all those who are endeavoring to aid you in carrying on the wonderful work which means so much to either young or old people in a physical condition like myself and, like myself, they can’t come forward and say they are lame, crippled or afflicted. I have no copy of any of the letters I have sent you, consequently I do not know how I have referred to the spinal curvature that causes a noticeable accent in my walking, but you may be sure that if I have mentioned being lame, limping, or using such terms, it has cut deep into my heart, and I have fought hard to bear the pain of it. If only those kind fellow workers could see a small portion of the goodness and desires of the afflicted - could search a bit in the heart of them who must use crutches, canes, wheelchairs, or beds all their life, I feel certain that your good friends and co-workers would not hesitate to re-organize the institution and carry on the work which is so badly needed.
I don’t want to give the impression that I am one for self-pity, and dwell on myself and hindrance, no, I am not. I have great pride. I have almost dropped from the pain of flesh and bones rather than admit I wasn’t the equal of a perfectly normal girl. I honestly believe it is because of the others who have done likewise - who won’t admit defeat - that such big, understanding men and women, like your kind friends and loyal workers, have stepped forward and aided you in helping the retarded ones, in carrying on the special work that God gave you to do for Him.
You may rest assured that I have prayed for you and your labor of love, and I will gladly give my prayers for the reestablishing of the organization. How I wish I could be one of them to appear at the special meeting June 6th. I should deem it a great privilege and blessing to be present at such a noble gathering. Although my physical form will be absent from the crowd my spiritual self will be there. I bless each and every one connected with the work and I thank God that it will be taken care of according to His will. How I look forward to the hour when I may behold your presence and hear the reading - the reading that will be the answer to my long years of beseeching God to heal me - to show me how to regain the strength in my limbs and back that were mine at birth, but later cruelly snatched away.
It is with genuine pleasure that I note what you say about reading my life through numerology and astrology. However, I didn’t expect you to give me a life reading when I asked if my name and birth numbers were in harmony. Though when I make the trip to Virginia Beach I hope to have a life reading as well as physical reading. In the meantime I thank you for your interest in wishing to do this for me.
I don’t know whether you believe in the thought that one is given great vision when born with a veil over one’s face; anyway, I was Mother’s strongest and heaviest baby and born with a veil. My birth caused mother less pain of any of her nine children’s births, and I came into the world without benefit of doctor, nurse, midwife. Whereas Mother suffered torturing pain for ten and twelve hours in travail with all her other children I came within an hour after the first pain. I was the seventh child, and Mother says I was her best baby - never a tear or fuss out of me, then at six months infantile paralysis struck me. At the births of the last two children mother almost lost her life and the babies too, but they are all well and strong now, and here I am - far from the perfect image I was at birth. How can such things be accounted for? My heart is very full today. I feel the need of telling you many things that seem to suffocate me, but I must not burden you with thoughts of the past that come sneaking in every now and then and weigh heavily upon my heart. When quite a little girl I figured the pathetically horrid, puzzling problems out alone at the best of my ability, and arrived at the conclusion that God can’t help the terrible things that happen. I so firmly believe this that it is solace to my heart when I see the helpless suffering of animals, birds, bees, fowls, nature and humanity.
When I first lived in New York I actually became ill from the thought of the waste of precious souls and bodies in that city and its adjoining boroughs, and yet I so dearly loved New York. I found after a few weeks that I could honestly say to myself and believe it, that God could not help the tragedies performed there. He gives humans the physical force, the mental strength and spiritual guidance to use correctly or incorrectly. According to their own will human beings rise, or ignorantly fall. They are free to use their forces as they please.
I so thoroughly enjoy your articles in the Virginia Beach news. I also enjoy the Newspaper as a whole, and I truly thank you for sending them to me. I have taken many notes from your articles, which are a great help to me in every day living. I don’t feel capable of criticizing your articles, for I don’t possess your learned knowledge and wisdom. However, there are many hows and whys that arise in my mind about spiritual truths and the teachings of the Bible that I should like some day to talk over with you.
As you suggested, perhaps I can get to Virginia Beach some time this late summer. I hope so and will plan accordingly. Would it be asking too much of you to give me an approximate estimate of reasonable hotel and rooming house rates in Virginia Beach? I plan to spend a few days in Virginia Beach. I want to have a long talk with you about many perplexing problems that confront me, besides the readings, and I want a few hours of complete relaxation alone.
I don’t remember exactly what I wrote to you in the letter previous to this one, but if you believe it would be of any material good, or would afford any pleasure to the group that will gather together June 6th - you have my consent to read it to them. You may also read this letter, for truthfully, I DO NOT feel that I can write the right kind of letter directly to the selected and particular group of fellow workers at this time. However, I trust that you know how I feel and can understand my situation.
I trust that I will hear a favorable report of the meeting June 6th, and that all things will work for the best of every one.
May God’s blessings rest upon each and every one of you now and forever.
Sincerely yours, [2123]

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Since I wrote you last I had a very beautiful dream about you. Now I do not dream often, but whenever I do my dreams are a prophecy. Some times three or four months elapse between dreams. For that reason I have learned to treasure my dreams, for I do believe they are divinely sent. It seems that my dreams never fail to materialize, even though it is sometimes necessary for a great length of time to pass, I have seen it take as long as five years. And because of that I feel that I may tell you what was in my dream for you.
I saw you standing alone, pondering and praying over a grave situation, but enfolded in semi-darkness. Gradually the darkness faded and a beautiful light - such a golden light - illumed around you. Lovely trees and lawns and a few very beautiful flowers filled the space around you. Suddenly you seemed to be standing on a high hill, with your hands held out as though you were blessing the people who were in the valley below you. These people did not ask for your blessings, they seemed wholly unaware of it, yet so much in need, but you willingly blessed and prayed for them. While you stood there, serene and faithful, a voice spoke. It said your hope for another institution was to be fulfilled, and in a bigger and finer way than you anticipated. On the spot of ground where you stood rose a magnificent building. Everything about it radiated love and gratitude and happiness. Harmony existed within its clean peaceful walls.
I rejoice over this dream for it tells much for your future and plans.
I am planning to leave for Virginia Beach on August 21st. My youngest sister and I are going to drive through in a car. It will be quite a trip for us two girls, but it will be a delightfully pleasant one as we will cook our own meals and stay over night at tourist homes, which are both clean and safe for young girls. I have chosen to come this way for two reasons. First, because of my sister, who works in an office and drives back and forth from home to work every day through sunshiny or stormy weather. She rises at four-thirty every morning and works very hard. I want her to have a change. Second, to drive through to Virginia Beach will cut down on expenses. I want to see you so badly and really learn what is the trouble with my body I would do almost anything to make the trip. In fact the hope of talking with you has been the one inspiration throughout all the hard days that have passed since last October. It was then that I first heard of you, and I have just actually lived for the hour when I could hear you verdict of my condition.
If it will be convenient and agreeable for you to see me sometime during the first few days after the 24th of August, (We plan to reach Virginia Beach by that time) I will truly appreciate it. Would you please let me know? I have many things to consider for this trip. Someone must stay with mother while I am gone, and at that time some one will be here.
If you cannot make arrangements to see me at the particular time mentioned please do not hesitate to say so. And later in the year, perhaps in October or November, I can plan to get away.
May I hear from you at your earliest convenience?
Sincerely yours, [2123]
B10. 7/21/31 EC’s letter to [2123]:
Miss [2123] Route 5, Ill.
Dear Miss [2123]
Just a little line to acknowledge receipt of your letter of June 2nd, and to tell you how much I appreciate your writing from time to time. I hope that you have really found it helpful to let to, as you term it, for it is our whole heart’s desire to be of service to each and everyone possible, and oftentimes we find that in trying to express ourselves to others we get a different insight into the situation from that we had really expected, even of our own selves, and proves often a very helpful thing.
We are getting organized for the carrying on of the work, and will have our first official meeting of the new organization this coming Saturday. I think that in the early part of the fall, or whenever you find it convenient, we will be able to try to help you get straightened out. We will do what we can towards not only getting an understanding of what is the cause, but try to help in getting you straightened out also. I don’t gather at all that you are one seeking self-pity, or dwell too often upon your own troubles. It is the natural thing for us all to be first self-interested, which doesn’t necessarily mean for selfish purpose either.
I appreciate your prayers, and I’m sure that’s one thing we can’t have too much of, nor too many remembering us in their supplications. It is to do His service and to help others in an understanding of their place and purpose in life, that we are striving toward.
Write us again when you have the time, and I hope to be able to give you a full and complete report of our meeting after next Saturday. We had a beautiful meeting on June 16th - a very enthusiastic one.
As for the rates, we will try to arrange to take care of that when you come, so that it won’t be too extravagant for you. It will no doubt be the early part of September before you will be able to get here. That will also be the time when it is most beautiful here, and the rates will not be so high.
With kindest personal regards, I am
Ever the same, EC:GD

My dear Miss [2123]
Just a few days before I received your letter of the 19th I had written to you. I am certainly very pleased to know that you have arranged to come to Virginia Beach the latter part of August. We can make your appointment for the morning of Tuesday, the 25th, at 11:00 o’clock. I certainly hope that you will have a pleasant trip. Your anxiety, faith and interest, I am sure will assure you of obtaining help - and will spur you on, giving your strength in hopeful anticipation. I am certainly hoping, praying and trusting, that you will be more than repaid for the wait, and for the faith and hope you have manifested. That I am to be enabled to be helpful in some way or manner is my sincere prayer.
Yes, I am sure you will find quite a number of camping facilities, even near Virginia Beach, so that it would be possible for you to spend a little time without a great deal of expense.
We are looking forward to seeing you, hoping that while you are here we may have the opportunity to talk over all the information. I would especially like to take up with you the dream. Some way, I feel you must have a very definite part in the work. I’m sure your faith and interest justifies your receiving worlds of benefit.
Hoping to hear from you again, letting us know definitely when to expect you, and with kindest personal regards, I am

Dear Miss [2123]
Your letter of the 12th to Mr. Cayce has been received by me. Owing to condition which have recently arisen, Mr. Cayce will be out of town until about the 28th. When you arrive in Virginia Beach, if you will phone me (Virginia Beach 259) I shall be very glad to see you and to talk with you. I have been Mr. Cayce’s secretary for a number of years. I know he is looking forward with a great deal of interest to meeting and knowing you, as we have all been very much interested in you since he first heard from you. I hope this will not cause you to alter your plans, for I am sure that you can get your reading the next day after Mr. Cayce gets back to the Beach.
Also, if you will get in touch with me, I think I can arrange for you to stay at Mr. Cayce’s sister’s home on 22nd Street. I was just talking with her, and she said she would be very glad to have you. She has had a house full for the last two months, but now has room for you if you would like to stay there.
Looking forward to seeing you very shortly, and with kindest personal regards, I am
Sincerely, [signed] Gladys Davis Secretary to Mr. Cayce
