This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 9th day of March, 1940, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [2140], new Associate Member (sponsored) in the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., through Dr. [2067].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 3:40 to 3:50 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, N.C.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2140].
-
As we find, there is rather the complication of disturbances which affect this body, and these in their order will necessarily have to be met, - as one disturbance will be inclined to work against applications as may be made for the other.
-
Hence it will require that those applications be made primarily that may give strength and vitality to the body, owing to the lack of vital forces, the lack of sufficient red blood or white blood - or the anemic condition.
-
Yet, there is also the inclination for lack of proper assimilation of foods.
-
Thus, while the organs in many respects NOW will respond, it will be found that conditions will need to be met AS developments progress.
-
We would give, then, an outline for those applications to be made for six to eight weeks; and THEN we would give that necessary to meet the conditions which will be aroused or brought about in or during that time.
-
As to the conditions, then: We find a lack of vitality, a very slow circulation at times, - at others it becomes quite quickened, owing to the little quantity of blood supply to rebuild, and the lack of proper activity or actions for the proper elimination and assimilation.
-
Hence as we find, these we would make now - first:
-
We would use the Beef Juice as a tonic, as a medicine; not merely as the diet but to be taken several times each day, but not more than a teaspoonful at a time - and this sipped very slowly.
-
Of mornings we would have a sponge bath, followed with an alcohol rub along the spine and across the hips to prevent the spreading and to prevent any trouble from bed sores. Hence this should be diluted alcohol, but GRAIN ALCOHOL AND NOT JUST RUB ALCOHOL! For, there would be absorbed from the rub alcohol the active principle in same to prevent one’s drinking it, see? Hence, use the Grain Alcohol, so that strength may be absorbed from it. Rub this not only across the hips and along the spine, but especially across the diaphragm of the body, and the upper portion of the abdomen.
-
Of evenings, when prepared for the night’s rest, massage the body THOROUGHLY with an equal combination of Olive Oil and Peanut Oil. This would include the head, or the sides of the face and neck, across the chest, across the abdomen, as well as down the spine and the limbs, see?
-
Do these each day.
-
Then, as to the matter of diet: Besides the beef juice, have as much as the body can possibly assimilate of GRAPES! every character, or all that may be taken of the grapes, and grape JUICE. This will act as an aid in reducing those tendencies for gas. When using the juice, extract it from the fresh grapes or else use Welch’s Grape Juice - but eat as much of the fresh grapes as possible to assimilate.
-
Also we would take cereals, as the cracked or crushed wheat cooked a long time, and cracked or crushed oats, but NOT rolled oats. We would alternate these with the fruit juices, as the citrus fruits and the like; but do not take the citrus fruits AND cereals at the same meal. These should be the principal portions of the diet. Vegetables and vegetable soups, with not too much grease, will be well to be given from time to time.
-
At least once a week there should be given a high enema or colonic irrigation.
-
Do these for the first six weeks. Then we would give other instructions.
-
Ready for questions.
-
We are through for the present.
Two copies to Self through Dr. [2067] (the extra copy is for your convenience in having two or three different people follow the suggestions) Copy to Ass’n file
(See directions [which were enclosed] for preparing Pure Beef juice.
Let us know when these applications have been made for six weeks, so that we may make an appointment for a Check Physical Reading to give further instructions.)

Dear Friend:
Thank you for the documents you recently sent on the reading March 9 for Mrs. [2140]. The documents were safely delivered to her and the treatments begun and directions followed. I saw her today and she is greatly improved and declared it is all very wonderful, likewise also says her husband.
An interesting feature of the experiment seems to have been the immediate reaction on her part. March 9 at 3:30 when I went to sit with her in prayer and meditation for the hour of the reading, I found her, upon my arrival in a desperate condition - she looked like death. Her face was drawn and gray in color. She hardly knew me. At the end of the hour assigned for the reading, her color had entirely changed, her eyes had brightened and she seemed to be a different person. She declared she felt differently, and that she wished she could get out and walk. She has been much improved ever since and is most encouraged regarding her condition. Her husband says that your diagnosis is perfect, and has hit her condition exactly. He has all faith in you and the work of the doctors on the other side.
I do hope the Sunday School lady friend of mine will be able to drive down to Virginia Beach this vacation. I have Saturday, Sunday, and Monday for the trip and we would have to return Tuesday. We would be all day Saturday driving down. If this works out as expected - I called her up today
- then we could have time to talk with you Sunday, if you will be home after church, and possibly Monday you would allow us to watch a reading, and talk more to you and Hugh Lynn. I suppose Mrs. Anderson [Mrs. George J. Anderson, The Virginian, 206 - 27th St., Va. Beach.] would have a room or two for us for Saturday night, Sunday and Monday, if plans work out as expected? I am sorry I cannot be absolutely definite since I am entirely dependent upon another, and it is at the request of the other that I am accompanying her.
As soon as I find out definitely either way I will let you know. I presume you will be at home these days. I hope all are well. Kindly remember me to the family and friends, Tom and the rest.
Very sincerely, [2067]

Dear Mr. Cayce:
In regard to [2140] … Street, …, North Carolina, you asked that in six weeks after the reading we arrange for a check-up. It is now six weeks and Mrs. [2140] says that any day at any time will suit her that is convenient to you. If you care to have me present with her that can be arranged any afternoon, especially Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays. Other days I have classes until four and would not be able to get to her house before 4:15. Perhaps my presence is not necessary - probably not, so any time, forenoon or afternoon, will suit her that suits your convenience.
Mrs. [2140] feels herself much improved. She was almost like a new person after the Reading. She has had some relapses, and of course is still in bed. She is following directions carefully. She believes she will be able to be healed and to walk this summer.
I wonder if you could ask a few questions during the reading as to whether the condition is that of cancer, and whether the doctors on the other side feel that the disease has not gone too far for healing.
Questions
- Is the condition cancer?
- Can she [2140] be healed and be able to get up permanently?
- Will she be able to gain weight in the next few months?
- What was the cause of the condition?
- Is there anything she is not doing to help her healing that she can do?
If I can be of service in any way let me know. These are terrifically busy days for me, but I still have my large Sunday School class, my general community work, visitation, besides my writing constantly, and regular class work at the college.
I hope you had a pleasant visit to New York and that all went well, and that many people had a chance to hear and to learn more about the Great Truth. Kindest regards to your household and all friends.
Very sincerely, Dr. [2067]

B1. 2/29/40 Letter request from Dr. [2067], Ph.D.:
Dear Mr. Cayce,
I want to ask your advice about a sick person I contacted this afternoon in my missionary visitation work in the community of … A member of my Sunday School class asked me to visit a lady who has been bed-ridden since last October. She used to be a musician and is a very fine sort of person. She is praying for some help to be brought to her, and she thinks I am part of the answer because I told her of your work. She is nothing but a bunch of bones - I have never in my life seen anyone look so much like a skeleton before. She has no strength, cannot digest any food, and has no bowel movements of herself - even enemas do not often work. Apparently she has no gastric juice or hydrochloric acid in her stomach to digest anything - and so she slowly dies daily.
This is a Mrs. [2140] of whom I am writing. Her husband is on W.P.A. or Relief and cannot finance a Health Reading. Yet they both have faith that such a Reading would be a cure for her. She has had several doctors trying to help her but none succeeds - she grows weaker every day, and nothing has been accomplished for her. She has asked me to pray for her, and she has prayed that God would send her some relief from her illness. We don’t know what the cause of the illness is. I told her that probably you would find it to be entirely different than what others have though was the trouble.
Will it be possible for her to get soon one of the SPONSORED HEALTH READINGS do you think? She is having her husband write you in regard to this. I told her of your work and she was thrilled with the thought that a few crumbs of your benefits to humanity might fall her way.
I know you must be very busy all the time. I do hope you have thoroughly recovered from the Flu and are yourself again. I shall never forget the blessings I received while in Virginia as a result of the contact with you and your blessed work. I never cease to speak of it everywhere I go.
If you do find a way of helping this poor woman I mention, could the directions be very simple so that she could apply the remedy herself if possible, since there is no doctor in … who knows of your work? Could I help in any way? I used to be a good nurse, and can follow directions.
Kindly remember me to the family and friends in your house, and any I may have contacted in the church and community. I am looking forward to the time when I may again visit Virginia Beach and hear some more of those precious stories from you own lips.
Very sincerely, [2067]
I hope that a friend & I can drive down during Easter vacation & see you folks - if but for a few minutes.
B2. 3/4/40 Dr. [2067]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Your blessed letter came this morning and I was so delighted with your willingness to help this poor sick lady of whom I wrote you, that I called up one of my Sunday School ladies and told her the good news and she took me this afternoon to Mrs. [2140] and we filled out the enclosed application. She did not have a pen, so it had to be made out in pencil.
Mrs. [2140] as she has signed herself was enraptured at the thought of your kindness in dealing with her problem. She is so full of faith she believes she could be healed merely by contacting you in spirit and the doctors on the other side without even medicine. We told her she will have to follow directions exactly if she wishes to be healed.
I had also the pleasure of meeting her husband. Unfortunately just today he has been layed off of W.P.A. and they [have] nothing left in the house to live on. The neighbors will do what they can and we are all praying that he may contact work. He is a fine gentleman, full of faith and much devoted to his sick wife. It is always darkest just before the dawn. My contact with the family was an answer to their prayers, coming through a member of my Sunday School class. This afternoon I also contacted at Mrs. [2140]‘s house a trained nurse, a neighbor of hers, who visits her occasionally - she knows about divine healing, about the work done by Unity School of Christianity, and is much enthused about your work. She knows that this type of spiritual work does actually go on. She is a lovely person to have around.
I have planned to be with Mrs. [2140] Saturday at 3:30 - 4:30 E.S.T. as you indicated - the time of the Physical Reading. We will be in prayer and meditation. That time will suit us perfectly. I would have been busy almost every other time with duties here at the college.
Will you make the directions as simple as possible, as we may not be able to get a physician to cooperate with us in the remedies prescribed? Make them “fool proof” if possible - for none of us are very wise. I imagine they will be so that she can take them herself. We will have to buy them here at this end, since she has no money.
We do most heartily appreciate your giving of the time from 3:30 to 4:30 on Saturday, March 9.
Yes, I do hope we can drive down Easter vacation time to contact you. It will start the work in … I think, and we never know what the results may be for this great work of yours. You probably have more now than you know what to do with.
Kindest regards to all the family and friends. And thank you again for your great generosity.
Very sincerely, Dr. [2067]
