HLC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2164].
-
As we find, there are conditions which prevent the near normal physical functioning. These have to do with conditions which have existed, or gradually grown in the system, from a disturbed circulation; affecting organs of the sensory system through the lack of the nerve impulse to supply the energies needed.
-
These, then, are conditions as we find them with this body, [2164] we are speaking of, present in this room:
-
First, in the blood supply, - in the present we find an inclination towards a form of anemia. We find that there HAVE existed the effects of a disturbance in the glandular force of the system that supplies through the assimilating system.
-
This first caused a disturbance of a catarrhal nature, - through the soft tissue of face, throat and head; which eventually caused that which has disturbed the equilibrium not only of the digestive and assimilating system but caused a partial prolapsus in the Eustachian tubes; affecting then the auditory forces in the system.
-
Warnings respecting this kind or character of anemia should be indicated, and those measures taken for the correction of same, with the administrations for corrections of that which has been produced by these disturbances through the system.
-
In the nervous forces of the body, - the natural tendencies arising from a disturbed circulation of a glandular nature are for the nerves to become involved as a result, and not as the primary cause; though their effects - or the effects of the pressures produced through the system in the present upon the nervous system - DO influence the nervous system’s connection between the cerebrospinal and sympathetic systems; especially in the areas where subluxations were caused or produced by the first forms of affectation, - producing a disturbance that arises from the nervous system; as the conditions in which there is the inability of the PHYSICAL nervous force or CENTRAL nervous system AND the sympathetic or vegetative system to at all times coordinate.
-
This disturbs the body in its ability to recall or to remember immediately that it desires, though the memory is NOT disturbed.
-
Again the affectation through the nervous system is to disturb the body at or during the periods of physical rest.
-
These effects will be corrected, or will respond to the applications which we will suggest for better physical activity.
-
As to the functioning of the organs of the body, - brain forces and their reflexes are very good.
-
Organs of the sensory system, as indicated, are more involved; as the vision at times, and the auditory forces or hearing - which is gradually being disturbed by the prolapsus in the Eustachian tube.
-
The conditions through throat, bronchi and larynx, - here, as there is the effect of this form of anemia disturbing the body, there are the feelings of uneasiness at times, and the inclination for the body to react acid; and this upsets the digestive or assimilating forces.
-
In the lungs, the heart and the hepatic circulation, - we find that the heart’s activities are irregular at times, though no organic disturbance; rather the nervous disturbance as affected through the circulation, as indicated.
-
The lungs clarify very well, though the blood supply - as indicated - is lacking in sufficient of the hormones in the hemoglobin of the blood for the proper replenishing and rebuilding at all times; thus causing periods when the body becomes easily tired in response to any physical or mental activities of great length.
-
In the hepatic circulation, - here, as we find indicated, is the glandular disturbance, or the disturbance in the creating or producing of the proper balance in the assimilation of foods taken. And the condition arose first from affectations as indicated, that became gradually the source of that causing - through the soft tissue of the face and head - disturbances to the sympathetic nervous system’s activity.
-
The lower hepatic circulation, or the activities through the kidneys and the bladder, the eliminations through the alimentary canal, - these have gradually slowed in their activity.
-
The kidneys and bladder we find at times irregular, owing to the attempt of the system to eliminate the excess acids produced in other portions of the system indicated.
-
As we find, in making administrations which would be helpful and remove the causes, the sources of the disturbance:
-
We would begin first with corrections osteopathically, by breaking up the lesions as caused along the Eustachian tube. As we find, not more than one operation (osteopathically given) would be necessary (not by knife or surgery of that type, but FINGER surgery, osteopathically administered); though several weeks of osteopathic treatments generally in preparation for same would be required, and several weeks of activity (through such treatments) to stimulate and relieve the pressures in the cerebrospinal system; especially in the lower cervical and the upper dorsal area, as well as stimulating the 6th dorsal to remove that inclination for the lack of sympathetic activity through the glands of the digestive system.
-
Also, to supply the coordinating vibration between the sympathetic and the cerebrospinal or central nervous system, with the equalized energies in the body, we would use the Radio-Active Appliance. Use this at least an hour each day, with the attachments circulated about the body in the manner ordinarily indicated for such. Keep the plates clear or polished before making the application or attachment at each period.
-
Doing these, and with the diets that are body, blood and nerve building, we will bring much nearer, much more normal activity of this body.
-
Now as to the diets:
-
At least once a week (but not more than that) we would add the Jerusalem artichoke in the diet. This preferably for this body would be taken raw; one not larger than a guinea egg or the like, and taken WITH the regular meal.
-
Use a great deal of properties or foods that supply Vitamin B-1 in the diet. These we would find in carrots, squash, peaches, and such foods. Whole wheat cereal (the cracked or crushed wheat), or cut oats (not rolled oats), or the combinations or wheat and rye (as in Maltex or the like), - these - not all taken at once, but distributed through the diet from day to day - are well for the body.
-
During the periods especially when there is the use of the Radio-Active Appliance, we would use these periods as the periods for meditation; that there may be brought a better coordination between the nervous systems of the body, at such periods opening - through suggestions to self in meditation or prayer - the centers that coordinate the spiritual forces and influences with the mental and the physical body; using as a guide (though in thine own words) such as this:
-
FATHER, GOD! IN THY LOVE, IN THY MERCY, BE THOU THE GUIDE: THAT MY BODY, MY MIND, MY SELF, MAY FULFIL THY PURPOSE IN THIS MATERIAL PLANE AT THIS TIME.
-
And keeping such attitudes in the relationships day by day with thy fellow man, we will find we will bring the near normal forces in this body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What causes the stiffness and pain in the neck? How can it be remedied? (A) As indicated, these pressures are caused by the conditions through the soft tissue of the head and the face, and the incoordination between the vegetative nervous system and the cerebrospinal. With the osteopathic corrections as we have indicated necessary in the cervical and dorsal, by the general manipulation, these tensions will be relieved.
-
(Q) Is there any connection between the arthritis and deafness? Please explain. (A) There is little or no connection. For, one is an affectation of the auditory forces through the Eustachian tube, while the other is the affectation to the muscular force as it joins with the tendons of the bones or muscles; thus produced by deposits from the lack of eliminations from the system, by the excess acids in the body. The characters of foods and the activities indicated to be mechanically (osteopathically) administered, will remove the causes and thus eliminate both disturbances which are as a part of general conditions.
-
(Q) What is the best way to regulate the eliminations? (A) Through the diet, AND osteopathic correction of those subluxations or pressures in the cerebrospinal system that have slowed up circulation - but stimulating a better circulation by the manner of diet indicated, both as to nerve and blood supply.
-
(Q) What was the cause of the melancholia which lasted for 19 years? (A) The breaking of the circulation between impulses of the sympathetic and the central or spinal nervous system; causing a casement as it were BETWEEN the two nervous systems, and producing a condition - as we have outlined - at the base of the cerebrospinal system, at the base of brain, a fullness there.
-
(Q) What has been the cause of my constant overweight? (A) The unbalancing in the diet as to those things that supply sugars or building materials that produce weight, and NOT eliminated. The properties indicated to be taken once each week (the Jerusalem artichoke) will aid in eliminating sugars from the system.
-
(Q) What can be done to improve the condition of my eyes? (A) That as will affect the nerves of the sensory system, aiding and stimulating them for better activity, will aid ALL of the sensory reactions; eyes, ears, taste, the sensitiveness to the activities without and within; and the controlling of same will be in the suggestions as made through the periods of coordinating the circulation through the system (the periods of meditation while using the Appliance).
Do ALL of those things suggested, not as something just to be done, but seeing, knowing that each has its part, its place in making the adjustments in the body-physical and mental, that the spiritual activity may predominate.
-
(Q) Is there anything I am now doing, or medicine I am taking, which should be stopped? as these treatments here suggested are begun? (A) We would leave off all those things save those that are NECESSARY to keep the equilibrium; for the SYSTEM will make for that creating IN the body of those forces necessary to supply elements for not only the adjustments but the correcting of the conditions.
-
(Q) Should there be exercise? How much? Please describe. (A) The treatments or applications made mechanically (osteopathically) are naturally a character of exercise. Exercise in the open air, - as walking, as just sitting in same, - is necessary. Walking and swimming are the best exercises.
-
(Q) Why do I have certain peculiar reactions to prayer? (A) Analyze the prayer suggested here, and we will see. As has been indicated, there needs to be a better coordination between, or a oneness of, the physical, mental and spiritual being. Know that the body is indeed the temple of the living God, as relates to thee; but it may not be set up as an idol within thine own temple. It should be as presented in the Way, - that in the giving ye possess the power, the strength, the healing, the ministration, the giving of all those forces and influences that are of a creative nature.
Know that the Lord is One, and manifests same in thee!
Those influences from without - as has been indicated - whether of a mechanical or a dietary or of whatever nature - are in their activities a part OF that Oneness, and CREATE that in their activity in thy body!
Do as has been indicated, and we will find - in three to six months - near to normal conditions.
- We are through for the present.

(4/8/40 GD’s notes at time of reading: See extra sheet of directions [which was enclosed] for Osteopathic Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist. We would suggest that you get Dr. Frank Dobbins, 551 Fifth Ave., New York City, to refer you to one closer by, if it is impossible to go to New York. Let us know the name of the one you choose, so we may put him on our list.
See pamphlet [which was enclosed] explaining, and sheet of directions for using, the Radio-Active Appliance, which Mrs. [1158] is going to lend to you.
The Jerusalem artichoke, if not on the market, may be obtained from John A. Salzer Seed Co., LaCrosse, Wisconsin. If you obtain them in that way, it is best to plant them in the ground so they will keep long enough for you to use them.
At your convenience, please let us have a history of your case to the time of obtaining the Reading, so that we may have something in our files with which to compare our information.)
Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. Remarks after 2164-1: Ques. submitted after Rdg., but most of them already answered; felt it was a marvelous description of her condition; has had tests, sugar does not go through people’s tracts; has to take adrenal injections or tablets.
R2. 5/13/40 Letter from [2164] to EC: “This is actually the very first day of peace & quiet I have had since my reading on April 8th! I began treatments with Dr. John Thompson John R. Thompson, D. O.] this morning, and now, this afternoon, I have opened the Radio-Active Machine to use it. And I can’t use it because it is not clear to me what the directions mean about red & black poles.
“There is nothing red or black on any part of any of it. The two poles are exactly alike on this appliance that [1158] lent to me.
“The typed directions for using it are before me. Though they speak of red & black poles, on the diagram on the other side they are called red and ‘plain’.”
R3. 5/15/40 EC’s wire: Tie red string around one pole - always attach that first.
R4. 5/16/40 Letter from [2164] to GD: “Thank you so much for your telegram. I was cherishing a lovely RED STRING, & it went into action at the pole at once. At 9:00 I was taking the Radio-Active treatment, AND at 9:25 my ears began to slow down their terrific ringing! It got lower and lower, & my prayer, that Mr. Cayce gave me, changed to tears of thanks from so deep in my heart that I went to sleep with wet eyes. It did things to my circulation & nerves at once.
“I am full of questions this morning & I shall try to so write them that they can be easily answered. You might just write the answer after each question & send my own pages back to me.
“What are Dr. Richardson’s initials? And what his address in Norfolk?
“If I came to Va. Beach & go in to see Dr. Richardson could I stay at the Cayce Hospital? While there would someone give me a little help when I use the Radio-Active machine? And what would it cost to be at the hospital?
“Do you have Jerusalem artichokes there so that that, & the diet of cereals, would be available? Maltex, cut oats etc., a few times a week?” [In same letter she requested Physical Reading for her sister, Mrs. [2274].]
R5. 5/17/40 Letter from HLC to Mrs. [2164]: “Gladys asked me to answer your letter of the 16th, as I have been in touch with the various places at the Beach where it is possible for one to stay and have cooperation as to the right kind of diet, etc.
“First, we are setting your sister’s appointment for the first open Saturday afternoon, which is June 8th, 3:30 to 4:30 Eastern Standard Time. I’m sorry there is such a delay, but my father is away on a short vacation and we do not expect him back until about the 1st.
“Please have your sister fill out the enclosed membership application and return, with any questions she may care to have asked regarding her condition, also giving us the exact address at which she will be while observing the hour appointed. I trust this date will be satisfactory, and that we may be of service to her.
“We are delighted to learn that you felt immediate relief from using the Radio-Active Appliance. We have had some remarkable results with it. I certainly hope, and believe, that you will continue to improve.
“Now for your questions: Dr. M. L. Richardson, Bankers Trust Bldg., Norfolk, Va. His office is about two or three blocks from the Virginia Beach bus line.
“I’m sorry that we do not have a hospital open at the present time. There is a Rest Home where the people in charge have been very cooperative in following treatments and observing strict diet lists as suggested through the Readings. This is: Witchwood, 35th & Pacific, Virginia Beach, Va. It is two blocks from the ocean, and about the same distance from the Hotel Warner where we hold our Congress June 20-23. It is under the management of Mrs. Susan Zollicoffer White, and the rate is $5 per day, including room, meals, and all necessary treatments such as assisting with your Appliance and the specified diet list. I’m sure Mrs. White would arrange to get the artichokes for you and plant them in her garden. She has considerable grounds around the place. There are a number of other cottages at the Beach where you could get the diet followed, but I believe you would be more comfortable at the Witchwood.
“The bus fare to and from Norfolk is seventy-five cents (75c) round trip. The Witchwood is only one block from the bus line.
“We are so glad that you are contemplating a visit here, and will no doubt be with us for the Congress.
“With kindest regards and best wishes, I am”
R6. 5/19/40 Dr. John R. Thompson’s letter: “Am also taking care of what I predict will be one of your most interesting and successful cases - Mrs. [2164]. I would enjoy watching some of these Detroiters we both remember see that reading, and then give her a physical exam. It was certainly the acme of accuracy. I have every reason to think she will get very fine results. She is a very interesting person.”
R7. 5/28/40 Letter from Mrs. [2164]: “Dr. Thompson thinks I will be ready for Dr. Richardson’s work about June 15th so I am writing to the Witchwood for a reservation then. Maybe I can be present at your Congress - and maybe I will be able to hear the speakers!
“I hope my daughter will join me at Va. Beach.
“My sister [See 2274-1] is looking forward to her reading at 3:30 to 4:30 on June 8th. She has no questions to ask. [Copied into 2224-1 Reading.] There is just one mystery in her case; she is not fit to carry her work and she wants to get well.
“Miss [2278] [See 2278-1] received your letter yesterday giving her reading date and the hour 3:30 to 4:30. She will write you her problem. She can’t be at home or alone or quiet until at least 4 p.m. She teaches a class of first grade children and their bus does not come for them until 3:30 E.S. Time. Then she must drive home here for quiet. I hope you can meet her problem.
“The Radio-Active Appliance works for and with me regularly but not since that first time have I felt any least effect. My ears thunder on; I don’t even feel a prickling sensation. I follow all directions exactly. My whole self is on the job. In every thing. Three times a week to Dr. Thompson; B1 shots & artichoke diet; & Radio-Active; sleep; outdoors and prayer as suggested in the reading.
“Thank you so much for your helpful letters. And I shall see you about three weeks from now.”
R8. 6/25/40 Letter from [2164] to EC: “Now that the Congress is history I want you to have this report on my case. I don’t know what to do; I am not sure I can write the story clearly. I’ll try.
“According to your reading Dr. Thompson of Detroit found conditions exactly as you had described them and gave me 24 osteopathic treatments. Then, as you know, I came to Cleveland to my old friend Dr. Clarence V. Kerr [D.O.] who assured me that Dr. Dunham [James E. Dunham, D.O.?] in his clinic was a very fine aurist and expert at finger surgery.
“Dr. Dunham examined me & told me the conditions he found. Later he read your reading and was much impressed because you and he had found exactly the same things and attributed them to the same causes.
“Then you and he were not so close together. He says I have only one chance in a thousand to be helped, & that he must work gently at the surgery, taking from six weeks to three months for it of 2 or 3 treatments a week.
“A man who did the work in one operation would make a very bloody case, hemorrhages, & later scarred tissue.
“Dr. Kerr is very strongly against the one operation kind of treatment because it is violent, bloody, & with danger, of course, of infection.
“As you see I am up a blind alley. I cannot stay here 3 months now; think ‘one chance in a thousand’ is just about no chance at all.
“Dr. Kerr is continuing Dr. Thompson’s treatments. He finds me a terrific case of old, tight lesions. In all, 27 treatments have not in the least relieved the pain in my neck nor the terrific noises in my ears.
“Perhaps I should not write you all this, but here I am alone in a hotel and rather at a dead end.
“I am sure the B1 and the helps for anemia you said I needed have helped me in other ways.
“It will be necessary for me to stay here another week, and I probably shall be in Cleveland again before Sept. first. In the interval I expect to go north to an island camp.
“With best wishes to you. Mrs. [2164]
“I may not have made it clear that I can’t obey the reading & have the ‘one operation by finger surgery’ when the doctor WON’T do it that way.”
R9. 6/27/40 Letter from EC to Mrs. [2164]: “Have yours of the 25th, and can understand how upset you must feel, to be sure the Dr. may be right there is only one chance in a thousand. But if the information was correct, and that admitted by two of them, and while would not suggest that you attempt to have the operation all in one dose - as it were - do believe it might be helpful would you have the treatments carried out for as one of them has told me - he was sure you would get results - possibly if it is impractical to keep on just now
- that you can take the whole treatment this fall or winter.
“Any way do hope you will get help - for believe you can. Possibly the reading sees that you have that chance - that you would respond.”
