1. GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, and that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: (In going back over the years from the present - ” - ‘30 - yes, disturbing - ‘28 - ‘29 - better - ‘26 - ” etc., on back to birth date.)

3. Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [2291].

4. In giving the interpretations of the records through the astrological and material sojourns, there may be drawn from these in the present experience that which if applied may become a helpful thing for this entity.

5. As we find from the records here in the present, merely to give astrological urges, or even a summary or list of the material sojourns, might mean very little to the entity, - unless that which has been and is a part of the present experience of the entity were taken into consideration.

6. For, the past astrological and material sojourns have so little bearing under the present existent conditions.

7. Rather had this information been sought rather from the Mental and Physical Reading, so that there might have been an interpretation or an analysis of the emotions and the influences which bear upon the body.

8. Not that there are not the abilities, nor the qualities that would make for an excellent executive - even - in any department that would have to deal with facts and figures. For these become a part of the entity’s experience, as they have been through the material sojourns in the earth.

9. Hence the very emotional natures of the body, as combined with the physical conditions and pressures as we find existent, make for periods in which the body-mind is not itself; and thus it does not even do that which the body-mind has proposed, is destined, or has intended to do or to have as a part of the activity or experience of the entity.

10. Not that the entity or body is possessed of disincarnate entities, but there are those pressures upon the sensory organisms that, combined with especially the emotional nervous system, tend to confuse the body as to its place, its position, or as to its purposes and intents.

11. Thus those conditions arise as problems, in which the body in its own appetites, its own activities, its own physical ways, has been carried away, or has been amiss.

12. These, then, are the influences as we find that need the greater attention.

13. This as we find, still, may be done best through that of psycho-therapy; that is:

14. First we would begin by making osteopathic adjustments in the physical forces of the body, of the subluxations which exist in the 3rd, 4th cervical, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th dorsal, and the coccyx. We would make these in series of some twelve to sixteen adjustments CONSISTENTLY taken.

15. These subluxations have come through PHYSICAL conditions that were existent.

16. Then, after the osteopathic adjustments have been made, we would have two, three to four experiences in which there would be the subjugation of the physical consciousness of the entity; in such a way and manner as may be done under the direction of such as Garrett or Kuhn, or these combinations.

17. Thus we would find quite a different capacity for the activities to be brought forward in such a manner that those conditions which are a part of the entity’s experience from the former earthly sojourns may be made applicable for the entity.

18. Then, do those things first; the first things first.

19. And - those who are responsible for this entity - know that God is not mocked, but has given each soul that has manifested the opportunities not only for self but those souls entrusted to self’s keeping, that ye may become channels of blessings to others.

20. In the application of those things indicated, be sincere, prayerful and earnest. Thus ye will find the outlook of the entity upon life, its principles, its duties, its obligations, will be changed, - yea, there will be even the abilities of the entity to accomplish those things whereunto it has been given the opportunity for expression.

R1. 6/26/40 Jane Revere Burke’s letter to EC:

My dear Mr. Cayce

I persuaded […] and his wife to write to you for consultation abut their son, [2291]. Mrs. […] has sent me your letter of June 20th. She says they have asked you no questions because they do not know what to ask. They do not know much about psychical research. In a way they are just afraid of it. Their son has been a heartbreaking sorrow to them. He is unreliable and has constantly lost his jobs - and been a continual disappointment to them in every way. I wanted them to ask you; 1. Is he possessed by some mischievous entity? 2. If he is so possessed what can you do to help him? I am convinced that much evil in this world is due to this “possession” by evil discarnate spirits. The young man is pleasant, genial, agreeable and affectionate when one meets him. Naturally his Father and Mother would do anything in their power to help him. Equally naturally he offers no cooperation. He is as slippery as an eel.

I have read a good deal about your work and like what I hear.

I have published five, inspirationally received books and have studied into these matters for twenty years. I am tremendously interested in healing.

R2. 6/29/40 EC’s letter to Mrs. Burke:

Dear Mrs. Burke;-

Thank you for yours of the 26th - it arrived just after we had gotten the information for [2291] - wish might have had it few hours earlier might have formed a question about same. Would judge from what have been told as haven’t read the reading as yet, that would have been best had we asked for a physical and spiritual reading. But do hope they have something that will help - trust you see the information, and will advise the mother and Father about same. Thank you very much for your interest.

Have you had our Literature, will be glad to send you any that you would like to have.

Wish you might have been with us for the Annual Congress just closed last Sunday, fine meeting and feel very one that was present were pleased with same.

Dear Sirs -

I have in the past read with a great deal of interest your literature about the work of Mr. Edgar Cayce; and have heard about him from friends. So I persuaded […] of Washington D.C. to write you in regard to their son [2291]. Mrs. […] notified me of the date set for the reading June 28th, 1940, 3.55 to 4.10 E.S.T. (Of course I kept the time lending my aid.) On receiving her letter I instantly wrote to Mr. Cayce giving some details from my point of view of the case.

Through a letter written on June 29th ‘40 - I received word that my letter arrived too late by a few hours “Wish we might have had it a few hours later” etc.

What was to hinder Mr. Cayce from speaking another ten or fifteen minutes over the matter?

I did not dream that the friends who so highly recommended his work could be so mistaken. Your association must be coining money if you feel you earn $25.00 in fifteen minutes “from 3.55 to 4.10 June 28th” - ‘40 E.S.T. It makes me feel as if money not truth was your first consideration. I have been interested in this kind of work for over twenty years and have fought against the idea that mediums were just out for money & this because I have known of the devoted unselfish generosity of so many mediums. I can only say I could never recommend anyone to consult your Mr. Cayce again. Tho I have read hundreds & hundreds of case reports of this kind but I never read so blind & poor a one as this. It is practically impossible to comprehend what he is driving at. (The unseen entities who have dealt with me have used clear forceful English). Certainly no persons not long experienced in psychic work could possibly understand this work.

I am deeply grieved to have recommended what will - indeed must so prejudice new seekers against the whole subject.

As I really know something of these matters I can dig a meaning out of it.

I am sorry to write so severe a criticism. When I first received the papers from Mrs. […] I was too indignant as well as disappointed to allow myself to write - the illness in my family caused me to lay aside the papers & I forgot them until Mrs. […] wrote a few days ago asking for their return.

What hurts me is that when Mr. Cayce acknowledges that my point of view might have helped he did not care enough about helping humanity to spend another few minutes trying to get more light. When I think of the hours days & weeks that I spend over a case & never receive a nickel. I just can’t understand not wanting to help - in such bitter need.

R4. 9/13/40 EC’s letter to Mrs. Burke:

Dear Mrs. Burke;-

Thank you for yours of the 3rd, and for letting me know just how you felt regards the feeble attempt to try and be of help for [2291], but I believe you are wrong, and certainly hope so, or I have been fooling myself for a very long while. My whole desire is to be of help if possible, and will be very glad to undertake another reading or to answer any questions that you feel might be of help. I have never been able, Mrs. Burke, to work more than twice each day and that not very long at a time. And it is not just a matter of minutes for me even tho that actually recording of what is said may last only a few minutes.

But assure you would be very glad to try and help and no charge whatever, I have two sons of my own, and anything any one might do to help them would be appreciated by me - and I certainly have all my life tried to live toward others just as would like for them to do by me.

I don’t think I have ever earned a penny in my life - at least not since I was I was on a farm, and certainly do not wish you to feel that I have in any way tried to shun any thing, or take advantage in any way - will be glad to return you any money paid to the Ass’n if you desire it. But would like to be of a service to the young man if possible and there is a chance for the suggestions to be put into practice

• whether a penny is paid or not. And it is not a matter of money to me for half - possibly more - of the readings are given without a penny being paid for them - whether you believe that or not it is true.

Can only assure you that I wish to help.

My dear Mr. Cayce

Of course I believe what you say that many of the readings are given without anything being paid for them as you say so, I believe it.

I had understood that there was a board who were scientific researchers in this tremendously important brance of science who received all fees paid and that they paid you some suitable salary on which it was possible for you to live and that you had nothing to do with any of that business part. Evidently I am wrong - I am very sorry that I wrote you so as to wound you. I wrote supposing that in all probability you would never even see the letter.

I never dreamed of your returning any money - and know that […] would feel the same way.

If I had known that the letter I wrote was going directly to you I should not have written it because I know tht the gift you have renders a person intensely sensitive - what I had read of the printed matter in regard to the “Association for Research and Enlightenment” had led me to suppose that a group of scientists had taken all your time and that I could write to them freely as any two persons pursuing the same line of investigation could talk feely about the work.

I do not think it is worth while for me to try in a letter to further explain what I think. If you and I met face to face no doubt we should both understand each other & be sympathetic.

You see it’s like this. I know the consuming agony [2291] has been and is to his father and mother. They do not believe in anything to do with psychical research but I persuaded them to try. They are able to spend twenty-five dollars on the chance that it might do good - they didn’t know enough about it to tell you enough to help you find out more. Neither could they let me know that they had decided to write and ask your help in time for me to write to you and then your letter came to me almost at the exact moment that I received from them all the papers you sent them and in your letter to me you said if your letter had come earlier it might have made it possible to get better results and I couldn’t see why you couldn’t have tried a second time after you got the letter. Is that clear? It doesn’t matter probably they will have to endure their pain and agony to the end.

You are not to blame you did your full part according to your way of working and I wish you success and personal happiness and that your two sons may always be to you the great joy & happiness that my one son is to me.

Dear Mrs. Burke;-

Thank you very much for yours of the 25th - felt you would understand when you knew the facts about the situations, it is true we have a board but it is to comply with the Law more than one that furnishes means wherewith to carry on, for it is a burden at times rather that a help to have to pay for the machinery of the Corp. But God being willing hope to do some good here and there trust some time you will have the opportunity to visit here, see and understand our feeble efforts to help, and the records we are keeping for future generations that are interested in such phenomena.

Would it were possible to be of help to [2291] possibly there may come a time when he himself may seek.

Just wish to thank you again - there is no one to my mind that has so many friends they can afford to lose a single one.

R8. 3/2/43 Julia Chandler’s letter to HLC - she was then A.R.E. Regional Representative to N.Y.C.:

Now for something else.

Will you please write me fully the facts re a reading given by your father for Jane Revere Burke some time back. His last name is [2291] and you may have Mrs. Burke’s name as Mrs. Nicholas P. Burke. I want if possible to dispel her violent prejudice against the readings. She is a prominent woman in Boston, socially, and her books purporting to be from William James (Let Us In; The Bundle of Life and another, the tile of which I do not now remember) have made her famous in the psychic world. I met her in November, and she was present when I had twelve very highly evolved people at my apartment at that time. The Harrisons Milton and Irene Harrison] were two of the twelve, and the group was so highly evolved as to lift vibrations very high. In fact such spiritual power was generated that I suggested we mentally broadcast it to the world. Every one liked this idea, so I asked Mrs. Burke to conduct the meditation; prayer, and spiritual broadcast. It was a terrific experience for us all, and Mrs. Burke later suggested a sequel of three such meetings (the three to symbolize the Trinity) with twelve again present (to symbolize the Disciples.) So I spent two months selecting the personnel with much of prayer and care, and these three group-meetings were held at my apartment Feb. 18th, 20th and 21st, - with Mrs. Burke conducting as formerly. She came down from Boston for the purpose, and the results were very powerful. She is such a consecrated person of such high integrity that it was with regret I found her greatly prejudiced against your father and his work because of a reading she had for [2291]. She tells me the reading took Edgar Cayce seven minutes; gave her absolutely no help for a young man desperately needing it, and that she was sent a bill for $25 for it. As I remember her statement, the reading consisted of a single paragraph, gave no former incarnations, no reasons for the young man’s present worthlessness and dishonesties, and helped not at all. Knowing nothing except what SHE told me, I could not form a judgement, or say much to dissipate her feeling about it. As she is such a prominent and influential person, it will be very worth your while to take the time to look up the record and let me know just what is what in the matter. With the proper information I’ll see what I can do.

R9. 3/9/43 HLC’s letter to Julia Chandler:

Dear Judy:

I have the folder containing the reading and correspondence on [2291] before me.

I am glad that you are taking an interest in this matter and I hope that it can be satisfactorily cleared up. It is an interesting and rather unusual case, even from our point of view. It will require extremely tactful handling, not from the standpoint of discussing the case so much as the question of revealing information in the personal correspondence with Mrs. Burke.

Let me trace the history for you. A request for literature came from Mrs. […], Washington, D.C. on May 13th. A booklet and physical case history was sent her. Mrs. […] returned the application checking a “life reading” to be given for her son [2291]. We have a letter from her dated June 24th in which she states that she desires to ask no questions and requested that any information secured regarding the boy be held strictly confidential. In this letter she indicated that Mrs. Burke had recommended the work and requested that Mrs. Burke be notified of the time of the reading in order that she might keep the period in meditation. The reading was given on June 28th as a life reading. One of the opening sentences in the reading is as follows: “Rather had this information been sought from the mental and physical reading so that there might have been an interpretation or analysis of emotional influences which bear upon the body.”

Ignoring the life reading suggestion, a brief physical reading was given for [2291]. I quote from it as follows:

“Hence, the very emotional natures of the body as combined with the physical conditions and pressures as we find existent make for periods in which the body-mind is not itself…”

“Not that the entity or body is possessed by disincarnate entities, but there are those pressures upon the sensory organisms that combined with especially the emotional nervous system, tend to confuse the body as to its place, its position or as to its purposes and intents. Thus those conditions arise as problems in which the body in its own appetites, its own activities, its own physical ways has been carried away, or has been amiss.”

It then recommended the number of treatments to be taken.

“Then, after the osteopathic adjustments have been made, we would have two, three, to four experiences in which there would be the subjugation of the physical consciousness of the entity, in such a manner as may be done under the direction of Garrett or Kuhn.” (This refers to hypnotism and the names are those of two hypnotists who have handled cases for us before.)

But Judy, what amazes me in this whole matter is that Mrs. Burke, who undoubtedly from her correspondence, is a very highly evolved person, failed to realize that the reading gave accurate and helpful information for [2291], without knowing anything whatsoever about the boy’s condition. Dad described the exact symptoms, anticipated Mrs. Burke’s questions which were in the mail and gave specific suggestions for curing physical conditions which could easily be confirmed by any good osteopath.

As you know, on most physical readings it is necessary to know where the person is at the time the reading is given. This reading was taken from the birth date of the boy. Mrs. Burke’s letter, asking the questions about the disincarnate entity and describing somewhat his condition, came after the reading was given.

Rather than being a blunder, or unsuccessful, I would say that this is decidedly (if you will pardon the language) a howling success; and again, if you will pardon the language, the only blunders have been ignorance on the part of those who requested the reading and a rather hasty and stupid attitude on Mrs. Burke’s part in not seeing the information as an accurate and amazing analysis of the boy’s condition.

Specific vertebra in his back were mentioned, the exact number of treatments necessary were indicated. Even names of hypnotists to whom he could be taken after osteopathic treatments, were included. And, as I see it, an accurate description of his mental attitude and physical condition were given. Even Mrs. Burke’s questions which were in the mail were answered, following the suggestion for a life reading WHEN A PHYSICAL SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN.

Let me apologize now for being a little severe. I recognize from Mrs. Burke’s correspondence that she must be a very lovely and highly developed person and we will appreciate anything that you can do which will straighten this matter out, and what is more important, may bring relief and help to this boy who certainly must be a trying problem for his family.

Permit me to be just a little bit mean once more before I close. I can understand how two books can be published, one in California and one in Boston, both of which purport to come from William James and which give absolutely opposing points of view.

P.S. Judy, let me apologize again for being so harsh with Mrs. Burke. I am afraid what happened is that she was emotionally involved and concerned over [2291]. The reading specifically disagreed with her idea regarding the disincarnate entities as shown by her questions. She must have given the information a very hasty reading.

I am so glad that our reports are complete on this case and I hope that this will enable you to clear the matter up. Mrs. Burke would be a wonderful friend and I am confident that [2291] could be helped if he would follow the suggestions given. I know that Dad would gladly, as he offered, give another reading.

If I slipped and ranted a little I am sure you will understand. Sometimes when people are emotionally concerned they fail to be careful or accurate or clear in their thinking. That is what so muddles so much of the psychic research field and especially the spiritualistic side of it.

Dearest Judy -

I’ve been really sick with another cold - I don’t know what has come over me this winter - I have been utterly incapacitated as far as outward activities go for five days. Yet I am trying to help you faithfully - it is so important that you do not miss your cue - (I hope I did not miss mine last Autumn about taking this ap’t - I hope & believe I have done my cousin a real service - but it has not been a very wise plan for me) - however now I am alone - it is better.

You made no mistake in writing and of course I am glad to understand correctly about Mr. Cayce - I was bitterly disappointed at the moment about [2291] but I bare no ill will.

Now back to yours of March 18th. I know you ought to get a rest before you start on any new job - no one looks as weary and “all in” as you did a month ago when I saw you - (unless they are actually under something acute) without being in need of a full rest. Your duty to your future power to serve - to yourself - & that you may not become a burden on yourself or others is absolutely clear to me. I regard your taking a long rest as imperative to all your future power to serve. The times come when our whole duty is for a time to oneself & to repose & renewal - get out into the open spaces at the first possible minute - and drink deep & to the full Power and Life.

Now to return to your letter of March 18th, as it concerns [2291] - no doubt I asked for the wrong kind of reading. I thought I wrote an intelligent and very confidential letter telling about him - I cannot possibly recall the details - I thought that I told you that Mr. Cayce offered to return the money - it was his parent’s money - not mine. I don’t think it is any use going back over it - nothing can be done about it now - He [2291] is in the army in Australia and should God grant that he die bravely that would be good. He must be in some sense a psychopath case I think.

If I remember rightly at the time that we asked for the reading [2291] was driving a truck for the Coca-Cola Co. & no one could say where he would be at any one moment - probably the thing we sought was not properly tabulated by us, so Mr. Cayce could understand. At any rate it’s all gone by - what we sought was a diagnosis of his condition - osteopathy was recommended but so far as I can recall no explanation was given whatever why osteopathy was expected to cure drunk dissolute habits & irresponsibility to all the calls of human living. He is quite a charming attractive affectionate man. You speak of “the lack of cooperation on the part of the young man”. Would you expect cooperation from a breath of wind or a wave of the sea? That’s about what he has been - yet he has earned a living part of the time. He has a perfectly good mind. You say “neither you nor the […]s had sufficient knowledge of the various readings to ask for the correct kind”. I had written to the research Bureau & received all the printed matter and read it with great care so had Dr. […] [[2291]‘s father]. He is a scientifically educated man & very able - I am sorry we were both so stupid if that is the explanation. I have always found (& still do) the style of writing from the Bureau very difficult to understand. I don’t see why it is necessary to use such queer language. I found both the type scripts you sent me extremely difficult to follow & understand. [2291] never knew of the work with Mr. Cayce. His parents & I sought help i.e., diagnosis to see if Mr. Cayce found from inner spiritual levels any reason for his actions - Mr. Cayce did state there is no “possession”. This past failure would not prevent my seeking Mr. Cayce’s help again. Only I would try to ask some one like you to help me seek it correctly.

You can guess what an agony it has been to […] to have their son a ne’r-do-well.

I shall be interested to see “There Is a River” - I am persuaded that Mr. Cayce is wholly sincere & devoted from other sources than your saying so. I have other friends who think him very fine.

I am grateful to you for trying to help [2291]. It’s funny that there should be maladjustments (if that is the explanation) of his huge and splendid looking body - I know now that such things do occur - but I did not know that at the time.

Of course it was our plan & intention to endeavor by every means in our power to get [2291] to cooperate if we could understand the reason for his doing so. From the nature of the case we could not tell him what we were doing beforehand. He never heard of any such thing. He would have thought us plain crazy.

This has been difficult to write and please let all my stupidity or idle gossip be overlaid with love - I need you so much - GOD BLESS you & guide you unerryingly to see His plan for you.

I suppose I wrote you that on Mar. 6th I had a very severe fall in the street striking the curb - alone - across my lower ribs & for ten days I had very severe pains - no bones broken but it was like an illness I was so hurt.

I think it’s extraordinary that not one of those people wrote you - really very discourteous. I wrote you that my ‘unseens’ reported that there was a great void there.

Washington D.C.

My dear Mr. Cayce:-

Thank you so much for your letter received this morning.

As this type of help is entirely new to me, I must learn as I go along.

Mrs. Burke [Jane Revere Burke] who I gave as a reference gave me as to understand that the cooperation of the individual for whom the reading is requested is not always necessary. At this time I do not plan to ask his help, and request the reading, on my own, as one responsible for him.

I expect to notify Mrs. Burke of the time of the reading, and she and I will set aside the hour from 3.30 P.M. to 4.30 P.M. E.S.T. June 28th.

For the present I do not wish to ask any questions.
