This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 28th day of August, 1940, in accordance with request made by the self, through his friend, Mr. [816], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Time of Reading 10:40 to 10:55 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. Washington, D.C.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes - outside rather than in.

3. Now as we find, conditions are rather serious.

4. This disturbance as we find is caused by crystallization in the very flow of IMPULSE. It is just the opposite from that called scleroderma, but rather the hardening - so that the tendons and muscles assume something of the form of arthritis, with acute neuralgial conditions, or poisons.

5. The basis or cause we find is from glandular disturbances.

6. Some of the administrations have been more of a detriment than of a beneficial nature.

7. For, there must be produced in the glands - and in the muscular and tendon flow, as through nerve impulse as well as circulation - those activities which would ELIMINATE those portions of the congestion, or the locked activity of the tendons.

8. Hence we find that the medications which have been suggested through some channels SHOULD be kept (that have been prescribed by Mayos, you see); for these offer the better opportunity for the beneficial results.

9. And WE would give these:

10. Take internally three minims of Atomidine in half a glass of water each morning before breakfast, for three days.

11. Then have a Fume Bath, using dry AND the fume heat; that is, use dry heat to raise the temperature of the body, you see, then the fumes as from a croup cup. This may cause some irritation if taken too often. Use two teaspoonsful of Wintergreen in the pint of water in the croup cup, you see.

12. Following such a Fume Bath, give the body a rubdown, with gentle massages as of the Swedish Massage nature - NOT corrective measures, but gentle massage, you see; using for such massaging an equal combination of Olive Oil and Peanut Oil. Then after rubbing off the body, apply alcohol.

13. Then rest two days.

14. Then take again the Atomidine; followed in three days with the Cabinet Bath, using in the fumes Witchhazel - two teaspoonsful in the water, allowed to boil in the dry cabinet bath, see? Follow this with the massage and the rubdown in the same manner as indicated above.

15. Then rest the two days from the Atomidine, and then take same again for three days; then the Bath, THIS time using two teaspoonsful of TINCTURE OF IODINE in the water for the fumes; followed by the rubdown in the same manner as before.

16. Then repeat these in these three different forms, - the massages, the internal medications, the superficial activity for eliminations, - continuing in this routine.

17. These as we find offer the greater opportunity for response in which we will find help for this body, [2333].

18. Ready for questions.

19. The colonic irrigations, of course, have been helpful; but these as we find were given too severe, without the causes of this locking in the muscular and tendon forces being considered, and the proper distribution so that the poisons might be eliminated. We would have the eliminations more through the respiratory and perspiratory system, in the manner as we have indicated, than through the alimentary canal, - for this tends to form too much of a locking of the lymph, which is lacking in the greater part in the present. The medications, though, are very well, and should combine with these things we have suggested.

20. If it is necessary for the better eliminations (and there should be evacuations, of course, at least once each day), use the Usoline or the oils - which would be preferable to too many enemas, though these may be taken about once in six weeks or the like to purify the colon.

21. As to the diet, - have those things that are solvents; that is, in this season, a great deal of figs at times, and fruits, and raw vegetables, and those of such natures; not a great deal of meat. However, beef JUICES, or stews or the like made from fowl or lamb, or even from beef at times, may be taken. But not those that are too heavy, as roasts or the like, or potatoes - unless these are cooked in the jacket and the whole of same eaten.

22. (Q) Is the heart all right? (A) As indicated by the manner in which these Baths, etc., are to be given, this is naturally affected by the general toxic condition; but we do not find it as yet disturbed, other than by the general strains.

23. (Q) Are the lungs in good shape? (A) These will be much better with those applications and the massages as have been indicated. These are not CORRECTIVE massages, you see, but MUSCULAR massages, see?

24. (Q) Is the pituitary gland, and other glands, functioning normally? (A) All of the glands are at fault. Hence the Atomidine (or iodine in this form) for the purifying of same, and then the other activities to cause them to work again with the general system and in keeping with the internal medications.

25. (Q) What cause the numbness in the right arm, right leg, and right side? (A) All of this is from the lack of the circulation.

26. (Q) What caused the crick and pain in the neck last spring, and the pain now? (A) As indicated, crystallizing of muscular forces from the lack of the balance in the fluids through the system of the lymph nature.

27. (Q) Is the ailment incurable? (A) Not necessarily.

28. (Q) Approximately how long will it take these applications to show results? (A) From six to ten weeks.

29. (Q) Is it advisable that he give up his job and retire? (A) As we find, there should not be a great deal of heavy activity. We do not find it necessary to give up entirely, but rather use discretion in the activities.

30. (Q) Were the treatments given by Dr. Chappell [D.C. PhT.?] (internal baths, electric treatments, massage, etc.) beneficial or injurious? (A) As indicated, these were rather harmful, more than beneficial. Do these as we have indicated, for the best interests of this body in the present.

31. We are through for the present.

R1. 8/30/40 (Friday) Mr. [816]‘s letter to GD:

Somewhere in Virginia

Dear Miss Davis:

Thanks for superspeed in sending the reading. It came early Thursday morning and I picked it up that A.M. as I was leaving town for a short trip.

Yesterday and today (Thurs - Fri) I have been studying it. I cannot seem to understand the third paragraph (2d page) about the fume bath, dry and fume heat, and croup cup. And I am wondering how long each fume bath should continue - 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes.

Possibly the details of a fume and dry-heat bath have been explained in some other reading. If there is an explanatory paragraph somewhere you could send me, it would be appreciated, but I don’t want to cause you a lot of work.

Before going to Mayos, Mr. [2333] was treated for several weeks, three times weekly by Dr. Chappell, Wash D.C., each treatment lasting about two hours, and included irrigations, baths, massage etc. From the bottom of page 2 of reading, and top page 3 [2333-1, Par. 19, 20], I understand the irrigations should be limited to about one each six weeks, but I am not certain whether or not the other part of the Chappell treatment is to be omitted since that paragraph says that certain medications are all right.

If you can conveniently find time, shall appreciate it if you will dash off your opinion about whether the Chappell treatments should be omitted entirely or partly omitted.

Aside from some doubt about the matters above mentioned, I think I understand the directions, namely -

1. Take Atomidine as directed - (called internal medication)

2. Take as directed a fume and dry-heat bath, followed by rubdown, massage, and alcohol.

3. Continue to take medicine prescribed by Mayos.

4. Follow dietary suggestions, and if needed use oil to help elimination.

Will fill out the form when I get back first of next week. Can an associate member get a check reading, and if so at how much?

The special delivery stamp does not mean anything except that without it this might not arrive until Tuesday.

Dear Mr. [816]

By Dry Heat the Reading refers to a Cabinet for taking sweat baths, in which the heat is produced by electric light bulbs inside the cabinet. I believe this type of Cabinet is used in most hydrotherapy or physiotherapy places; but probably the fumes are not used so often. In this case, after the body starts to perspire from the heat from the bulbs, then the fumes would rise over the body from a pint of water in a croup cup (or the like) sitting UNDER the chair or stool on which the body sits while IN the Cabinet - You can get an electric cup that plugs in, and this could be arranged before the body goes in the cabinet, for it would probably take it about as long to get boiling as it would for the body to start to perspire from the heat. Of course, the Wintergreen would be put in the water the first time, the Witchhazel the next, and Tincture of Iodine the next, and so on.

There is a place in New York that sells a sort of oilcloth gown for taking a sweat bath at home, but this is heated entirely from the water boiling in a big pan underneath the chair or stool; so this would only be Wet Heat and not what the Reading ordered.

If Dr. Chappell will follow the treatments as outlined in the Reading, it will be fine; but he should give the irrigations only as the Reading suggested, also the type of Baths, rubs, etc. If he objects to such a procedure, remind him of our physiotherapy place in New York which has gotten such wonderful results by following the Readings: The Reilly Service, R.C.A. Bldg., New York City. I think the only treatment the Reading okayed for you to keep up, other than the Reading suggestions, was the medicine from Mayo’s. I certainly hope you can get the Reading followed out in detail.

Yes, an Associate Member is entitled to Check Physical Readings at $10 each. However, if all of these suggestions are followed, I do not feel that Mr. [2333] will NEED another Reading. But we shall see.

R3. 9/5/40 Mr. [816]‘s letter to GD:

Washington, D.C.,

Dear Miss Davis:

Thanks very much for the additional information. Mrs. [808] also telephoned. The directions are now very clear. I do not think there will be any difficulty in obtaining here the simple treatments which were suggested. He has been taking treatments which were far more complicated.

I hear that you all are right busy.

I am leaving the last of the week for a trip, and will be away for a few weeks, business trip.

Have not yet been able to see him, and do not as yet have the necessary information for the blank form. Will get it at first opportunity.

R4. 9/18/40 Mr. [816]‘s letter to GD:

Oklahoma City, Okla.

Dear Miss Davis:

Left Washington for business trip shortly after receipt of your letter explaining the [2333] physical reading, and am slow in returning form attached hereto. Please do not send Mr. [2333] any literature as yet.

The treatments, medicine, etc., were started on Friday morning, September 6, and I hear this morning that some improvement is shown.

Had to do a little flim-flam, to get his wife and relatives to cooperate and give him a chance. After the reading and your explanatory letter were received, we found a way to persuade his folks to get a reading, so on the afternoon of September 5 they asked me to arrange it. In order to let them think they were doing it, and secure maximum cooperation, I told them I telephoned you all (which I had at another date), that a reading was given, after which there was another telephone message (as there had been), and in that way they started the medicine the next morning, or on September 6.

Then I hunted up some stationery like yours, a typewriter like yours, and copied it word for word, and line for line, but changed the date from August 28 to September 5. As a result, the thick-headed bums, think they were given a special reading 10.40 to 10.55 P.M. Sept 5, instead of 10.40 to 10.55 A.M. August 28.

I mention all this so that, if a check reading should be needed after a few weeks, perhaps you can AVOID MENTIONING, in the typewritten check, THE DATE on which the original reading was given.

The baths and massages are being taken at the Takoma sanitarium. They have a very great variety of equipment and facilities. Takoma is a suburb of Wash, D.C., at north end of town, partly in D.C., and part in Washington [Maryland]. I think he is going to get well, but not sure as yet.

I will get back about Oct. 1st.

B1. 8/25/40 Mr. [816]‘s letter to EC:

Washington, D.C.,

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Was so surprised to hear your voice over the telephone that I was almost speechless. Glad to know you are all right. The time set, as I understand it, is next Wednesday, August 28, around 10:30 in the forenoon.

The reading is for Mr. [2333], a sick man. He will be in Washington, D.C., at … Street, N.W., Apartment 29, unless he should be sitting in front of building. If the unexpected should happen, and he should have to go to hospital (which is unlikely) a sign will be placed on the door telling where he is. He has authorized me to get a reading for him. Miss Davis sent me a form to be signed by him as an associate member, but I have searched the place and cannot find it. However, he could not sign it any way because there is something wrong with his right arm, no feeling, and he cannot use his right hand much.

Up to about six months ago he was a big and husky man, and had never been seriously ill. Then he got a crick and pain in the neck; later some trouble with the back; then he quit work and stayed home. Still later, his right leg, right arm, and right side became sort of numb, no feeling, kinder like your foot being asleep, except that it does not wake up. In the last five months, the doctors at Washington and at Mayos have been trying to discover what is wrong with him. And no one seems to know. The Washington doctors, one set of them, stretched his neck and got rid of the crick. Another set gave him internal baths, etc., and special diet. The Mayos gave him a prescription for a medicine to take, but no treatment, and advised him to give up his job. Meantime, he gets no better. And none of them knows for certain what is wrong with the man. I hope we can find out what the trouble is, and what is causing it.

Please ask Miss Davis to MAIL THE READING TO ME, at the ADDRESS given below, and I will see that Mr. [2333] gets it. There has been some interruptions to his mail, since his illness, i.e., some personal mail did not reach him, and I want him to be sure he gets this reading. Hence the request to send it to me, and not to his address.

I will probably telephone Miss Davis around 8:00 PM Wednesday to get an idea of what the reading says is wrong with the poor fellow. Questions attached.
