1. GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, and that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

3. Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [2386].

4. In giving the interpretations of the records as we find them here, these are chosen with the desire and purpose that this be a helpful experience for the entity; enabling the entity to find within self those helps that will bring the magnifying of the virtues, the minimizing of the faults. Thus may the entity fulfill that purpose for which it came into this experience.

5. From those urges that are a composite of the astrological aspects and the interims of sojourn between material manifestations, we find these as manifested characteristics latent and manifested:

6. One that at times becomes easily discouraged.

7. One that, with the taking of thought, can work itself into almost a frenzy regarding any proposition or condition, or association.

8. Hence one of those problems to be met in the experience of this entity is the full realization of the relationship the entity bears to the Creative Forces; and to know that all problems, all questions that arise, must conform or answer as a stimuli to something within self.

9. Then, as mind is the builder, keep the mind upon constructive influences; knowing that the Creative Force, or God, is mindful of thee, - as thou art a part of that universal consciousness. How personal that influence may become in the experience depends upon how well the entity in its personal self consciously applies the fruits of the spirit of truth. These are: first, love; longsuffering, brotherly love and kindness; patience. Against such there is no law, either spiritual, mental or material; but they ARE of the spirit, and thus mentally constructive, bringing peace and harmony within material manifestation.

10. In the astrological aspects we find Venus, Mercury, Jupiter and Uranus the ruling forces; though Uranus is at variance to both Jupiter AND Venus.

11. Hence the latent urges are at times such that the entity may become overly enthusiastic about spiritual imports, mental attributes or mental faculties, and even material aspects. In materiality these oft do not take DEFINITE form, yet the abilities from same in the various fields of endeavor are apparent.

12. Thus the entity should find self engaged in, associated with, or outlining the policies for, many VARYING material conditions; as a writer, as a printer, as such that would have to do with the same, - of the mechanical things, especially in their developments.

13. In those undertakings where special truths or tenets are to be, and are being presented, - all of these are indicated as necessary influences to keep the mind, the mental urges, from becoming sidetracked, or becoming - as it were - too intense upon any ONE influence.

14. For in Mercury we find the high mental abilities, and in Venus the beautiful, - those things pertaining to activities that would have to do with ANY service or field of artistic temperament; and this would include relationships with others as well as in writing - of a classic or semi-classical nature, or purely fictional, with a moral, or story, associated or connected with same.

15. In Jupiter, we find the universality, and the needs for the universality of thought of the entity itself. For, as indicated, all of these at times are in adverse forces to Uranus - or the occult. Hence mysticism, occultism, theories, theorems or tenets are of interest to the entity. Yet, these must ever be tempered with that as may be practical in the experiences of individuals.

16. Hence as the injunction was given, in the application of self sow the seed of the spirit and leave the results, the increase, the activity of same, to He that is able to keep that committed unto Him against any experience.

17. Know the Author of thy faith, of thy confidence, and know that it must be spiritual in its import, its intent, its purpose. Know the ideal spiritually, mentally, physically, and not such as what others may give to thee, but what and how ye may as an individual entity, manifesting in cooperation with the Creative Force or God, bring the consciousness of the fruit of the spirit INTO the relationships with others.

18. As to appearances in the earth, - these we find quite varied, at times quite far apart. Not all are here given, for - as the developments are in the manifestations of material conditions - when a child ye thought as a child, but when a man ye put away childish things. But remember thy relationship to the universal consciousness, and all has its place in thy experience.

19. Before this, then, the entity was in the land of the present sojourn; though the entity journeyed rather to the land, during the periods when there were the searchings for the material gains - or gold.

20. Hence we find the entity was among the prospectors; rather in the position of being drawn by circumstance than by the conviction within self, and yet the entity materially made real gains through that experience, - in the name then Felix McDonald.

21. The entity gained in the greater part of the activity, for it sought - constantly - to impress upon the associates the needs for conservation; not in that sense of being miserly, but temperate in their expressions, in their mode of life, in their experiences, in order to be less easily disturbed by the unusual circumstance. And many unusual circumstances arose in and during that experience, with many of those about the entity.

22. Hence we find the entity was one to whom many came for advice and counsel; so that the nickname which followed the entity was “Doctor,” or “Doc,” - as a helper to those in distress of EVERY nature or character.

23. And the interest the entity had in, and the help given to, the many of varied circumstances and stations of experience and development, mentally and spiritually, fits the entity for those material associations to keep self - as some would say - meddling or interested in many varied phases of material endeavors of others. This should be rather in assisting others to carry on, than in the centralizing or personalizing of any effort or determining on self’s own part, - save as in conjunction with writing.

24. Before that we find quite a varied or different aspect, - during the Roman experience, when there were those activities upon which many brought about the power, the pomp, the influence in many lands.

25. The entity was close to those in power during especially the period of Augustus Caesar, or Augustus. Though the period there did not last so long, the entity’s influence then - as Cadelibus (though not indicated in the writings of many) - was indeed the power behind much of that accomplished in the expressions or expansions of that period.

26. Hence a knowledge of much of the happenings in other lands, through the emissaries and reports; bringing into the present experience of the entity the abilities to remember, to recall, to work out detail, to give instructions and help to many in various fields of activity or service.

27. Thus did the entity gain and lose, and gain, through that experience. As there were the applications for the whole, the entity gained; when for self-indulgence, self-gratification, the entity lost, - which is found at times in the present experience, in the appetites for those things that would not bring to the entity the peace which has been the experience - in characters of associations; arising from those latent urges of that period.

28. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land, during those periods when there were the activities in which the land was ruled by an unknown entity - through unusual circumstance, - which brought to the experience of the entity the unusual experiences.

29. For, the entity was among the magicians of Pharaoh’s court during the period of Joseph’s rise to power, and through those periods in which there was the consummation of the changing to the various conditions that arose in might and power through those periods. This brought that temperament, that tendency latent and manifested, for the questionings of powers, influences and forces that direct human experience.

30. The name then was Tep-Lepan. The entity gained, the entity lost; gained during the periods of deeper thought and meditation, lost in the period of grudges, the period of attempt to apply necromancy as related to the magic, or the reasonings. Magicians then were not merely sleight of hand performers, or prestidigitators, or those who worked mysteries, but rather they were - as would be termed today - the lawyers, or the students of laws of EVERY nature pertaining to the ruling and directing of the subjects of a kingdom or of a household.

31. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land, but of those peoples from Atlantis. The entity came with those who were attempting to preserve and establish the records as to the happenings in the Atlantean land just before its destruction.

32. Hence that latent, deeper feeling the entity oft experiences - as in dream or in deep thought, or moods or meditation - “There IS a law, if I could but know!”

33. Again that counsel, that admonition, - know that the answer is ever within self. For, He - the ruler - He, the love - He, the God of the universal forces - will not leave thy questions unanswered, if ye seek to know same in and through Him; and the answer will find materialization in mind and THEN in materiality in self.

34. Study then to show thyself approved unto that ideal ye choose; knowing there is the necessity of combining, coordinating, cooperating with the universal forces and consciousness within.

35. Never condemn self nor others. Forgive as ye would be forgiven.

36. Love as ye would be loved by others.

38. (Q) Please tell me as much as possible about my last and immediately preceding incarnation. I am more interested in WHERE I lived than in WHO I was. Dear Mr. Cayce;

I am just getting around to acknowledge your airmail of the 28th, the Life Reading, literature, and other letters from you. I assume you received my wire and the money, and an airmail in which I sent on the signed slip which was sent me.

The Life Reading was very interesting, but not as complete as I could have wished for it to be. I am a Research Engineer - with the U.S. Rural Electrification Administration of the Dept. of Agriculture - formerly on the … Staff (economics) of … University, one of the three founders of the … movement, etc. The enclosed may clear things up somewhat about me.

I am a curious person - scientific curiosity. I have no use for any other kind of curiosity. My reason for wanting the life reading was to see if it would tie up to certain inner thoughts which, in 1932, I crystalized into a novel, unpublished, called the … In this novel I set forth certain memories I seem to have concerning another life on another planet, a place which might be described as Utopian. You will find certain of my writing in the public library, such as, for instance, The … and much other work of a technical nature in various publications. I have enclosed a script obtained through the automatic writing of Dora Drane, a West Coast medium. Tied up to … both MS have always had a very powerful effect upon all who have read them. Your reading gave no indication that I have ever existed on any other planet or in any society other than Homo Sapiens on this planet. Obviously no empirical checks are possible, although had you given me more information, perhaps even detailed information, re Felix McDonald, I might have check up on him. I married a girl of Scotch descent and have always had a bit of a leaning for the Scotch. Also I have always had a very powerful urge to come out to California - where finally I now am. I have always wanted to live here, and I have been able to check my desires in this respect to the point where I can say that they are completely unreasoned. They just exist as an urge.

Of the astrological features of your reading I know nothing, having never studied this subject. However recently I employed an astrologer as I wanted to look into this subject. Your reading is now with this person for comment.

I have been the power behind several “thrones” in this life, and still am. This part of your reading also hit home. I have never wanted the front seat, or to be the man on the horse; but I have always wanted, and generally succeed, to tell the man on the horse what to do and when to do it.

People of all kinds and classes constantly come to me for advice, and I have helped many people in this way, as it seems Felix McDonald did also. To a greater or less extent, I run many peoples lives, and greatly influence the lives of many more. In public lecture work, of which I have done a great deal, I have changed the thinking of hundreds of thousands.

The Roman episode I cannot classify. I have never been interested, much, in history. I like luxury (but hate money and the means of getting it) and have many women friends. Possibly these are the “urges” from this period of which you speak.

My early training was as a concert pianist and I studied music very extensively in my youth, but gave it up in the first war, after I joined the … Aero Squadron. I am an airplane pilot, and was a friend of the late Gen. Wm. Mitchell.

Realizing the need in these terrible times for economists and sociologists who could think scientifically, and who could not be bought off by the moneyed crowd, I have devoted my life work to the cause of getting a better economic system in this country, one in which poverty will be unknown and in which classes will exist only in relation to public service. I am probably the foremost exponent of … in this country, and an intimate friend of the […] family.

This I do out of a sense of duty, and have worked my way up to a fairly top position in American economics. But I have done this only because first, I felt I ought to, and second, because circumstances have trended that way. Actually my major interest - perhaps my only real interest - is the study of psychic phenomena. It is my great hope that I will be allowed to devote my declining years to this study.

I have done quite a lot of work, and still more thinking, in this field. You will find me mentioned in quite a bit of the literature, for instance in […]‘s new book, …

My associates have for many years noticed a strange faculty in me - and that is, namely, to know a whole lot about a lot of things which I have no business to know anything about. Just about the whole of the … theory comes from these strange “memories”. I know more science than I should, more economics, and sociology than I should, based on anything which I have done in this life.

Above all I seem to know practically all about a perfect society in which I seem to have lived. So much so that my knowledge is detailed right down the line. It has been amazing to my friends and associates that I seem to know about scientific advancements long before they happen.

A case in point is two years of research work which I did with Dr. […] in the subject of hyper-space. This work had never been done before on this planet. Yet forty eight hours after I had joined forces with Dr. […] and without any previous introduction to the subject, Dr. […] stated to a relative of mine that my knowledge in this field far exceeded his own - and he had devoted the past 20 years to it.

This, and much more like it, seems to need explaining. I had hoped you would explain it. But your reading does not give me, in so far as I can see, any of this background.

It has never been shown, for instance, that Atlantis, if it existed, and it probably did, had our scientific and technological advancement. I will not document this statement at this time, but rest assured that my reasons for making this statement are good - at least intellectually and from the record. If this is true, then my sojourn there, which you give, could not have given me what I now seem to know.

I asked you a question - at the end of the reading - which you did not answer. Namely; am I tied in anyway to anyone? I seem to remember that down through the ages I have been tied to a twin sister. The enclosed script is allegedly from her. Notice some of its lofty beauty. And she mentions other planets where we were together. I seem to know her far better than I know anyone on this planet. How come?

I am not questioning for a single moment the validity of your reading. Much of it hits home. I may have been here on this earth many times. But first, do I belong here rather than to some other place, where also I may have been?

I may say that several other psychics, have placed my background away from this planet.

All of this means research - more and more research. For instance I would greatly like to receive a long script, perhaps scores of pages, on the life of Felix McDonald. Not because it matters to me, but because I’d like to run him down in the regions in which he lived and check his life, if I can find it, with the script. As Felix McDonald lived just a short time ago, I should be able to find him. I have left my mark on these times, and conceivably Felix McDonald left his mark on HIS times. I may add that I am a trained investigator with many years service in Uncle Sam’s Criminal Divisions (Dr. [2067] can tell you about me.) Needless to say, I would be delighted to pay for what I could get in this connection. I’m prepared to do an investigational job on it if you can give me the material on which to start.

In any event, I [am] deeply grateful to you for the reading. And you will note that I am doing now just about what you suggest I should be doing.

Dear Mr. [2386]:

Wish had time to study a bit farther your letter as well as the data sent me on the 2nd, but as [have?] to be away for two weeks or so - trying to help those seeking through these channels - in N.Y. Feel had at least better let you know had your letter, and appreciate it a great deal - can only wish had the opportunity to study and talk with you fully - I like your attitude, your approach to the subject and can only hope we may some time get together.

The Life reading Mr. [2386] have always appeared to me to be the most fantastic tales most ever read - yet personally, have had much good come out of them and when hundreds yes thousands of others tell me the same thing - guess have become to believe in them for that reason. For know I know nothing about Astrology nor any other phases of the phenomena

• however believe if you read the the information again - you will see there is the intimation, there is a consciousness on other planes - whether this is planets - well the direct question on such has given “yes - a consciousness”, but not such as we know as a “physical consciousness” but peculiar to that sphere of existence.

First Life readings - are as in your case very general - but when individual experiences are taken of other experiences in the earth plane and an entire period. A period being the time given to one reading - for the information apparently allots just so much time. Apparently just what my physical body will stand - and have many experiences where several periods are given to one reading - the information oft times taking up the next period just where the other left off - in the middle of a sentence or even a word. So it will be most interesting to take one or more of your experiences and give what time to it the information will of its self allot. Have never attempted consciousness on other planes. Might be just as easy as the earthly - I do not know.

Like Dr. […] he knows a great deal about the work here - as he has spoken for our groups here - met him first many years ago - also Miss Roxanna - has had her own experience with the work.

And believe you are acquainted with my son Hugh Lynn Cayce, he says he met you in N.Y. some time ago - Dr. [2067] we all think a great deal of for her untiring desire to try and help others. The proof - yes, the purpose if I know my self has ever been only to use the power - gift - or what not only for GOOD for others.

When am home again and have the opportunity would be very pleased to try and get a report on the activities of “Felix McDonald”. Our next two weeks or more will be taken up by those whom the time is allotted to in N.Y.

“The … Script” is of special interest to me - hope may keep this and study it more closely. Suppose have had most every form experience in psychic phenomena - these have come of them selves - never especially sought - have talked with many who have passed through Gods other door - held conversation with them for an hour at a time, many for few moments - and have always wondered - Why - Why why didn’t I ask them other questions than I did. Has always appeared so natural however

• seem to have forgotten it is anything unusual - have had to me “celestial visitors” had them talk with me - always appear too dumb to ask even the slightest question at such times. But as said - these have never been sought - they come apparently when needed to assure me - that I must be strong, and not to fear ridicule - so for that you see why you appeal to me. Not that feel you would be easily taken in - but your training - is to analyze happenings, and gather the good that may help some other wayfarer - if I understand you from your letter - and the “script” which have read only a part of.

Dear Mr. Cayce;

Thank you for your kind letter of Nov. 9th, which I am just getting around to answer. As you know, I travel a great deal and so my correspondence must wait until such time as I get back to take care of it.

I am enclosing herewith an astrological reading made by Miss Sylvia Harding, one of the best astrologers here-abouts. In sending it to you, I am sure you will understand that I do so in no spirit of criticism of your reading. What we are both after are facts - as much of the Truth as we can see. And as a scientific man, I see it always as best to get as many different angles on a given proposition as possible. This is always best done with no subjective feelings oneself, one way or the other. A perfectly objective and detached attitude is the only one - at least in my experience - which is fruitful of the best results.

As you yourself claim no knowledge of the readings which flow through as a channel, it follows that some other Intelligence or intelligences work through you. It is to Them, therefore, that this communication is mainly addressed. They have set my astrological chart up, I take it, or you would not have asked for the facts concerning my time and place and birth - which has been worked out to within the two minutes of accuracy needed for best astrological reading. Knowing almost to the minute when I was born, Miss Harding has spent some six months in checking my life’s experiences against this time to establish thereby the EXACT time, which she now thinks she knows and upon which her reading is based. In any event her reading is based on the same time and place as yours, therefore it becomes interesting to note that in many respects they do not agree. The study of disagreements, I have fund, often leads to knowledge. It is in this spirit, therefore, that I am sending the Harding reading on to you in the hope and expectation that you may feel inclined to take it up with Those who worked through you in giving me your reading.

Yes, I had the pleasure of having lunch with your son Hugh. He is a fine intelligent chap and I wish that I might work in this field with him. In fact I hold the ambition, which I probably shan’t achieve, to devote the remainder of my life to nothing but psychic research. So far the means to do this, however, have not come my way.

Strange, it is the only one of my writings which publishers have turned down. The main comment seems to be that because of its subject matter, it would not be “box office”.

[enclosed astrological reading]

The Astrological aspects as given in this reading of Mr. Cayce are contrary to the planetary positions as given in the Ephemeris for December 9th 1891.

In the Cayce reading on page two, the statement is made that the planet Uranus is strong but “at variance to both Jupiter and Venus”. On the contrary, the planet Uranus is in good aspect to both planets, being sextile to Venus and trine to Jupiter. Naturally a benefic aspect between planets is of course different than the malefic one above quoted and therefore if the premise of the reading is mathematically false, how can a reading based on this premise be true?

If, as the reading states, that “Uranus is at variance to both Jupiter and Venus” it should add the planet Mercury, because the two planets Venus and Mercury are in an exact conjunction and therefore must share equally in all aspects. This “twin” position is very unusual and is really the keynote of the reading of the horoscope, but it is not noted by Mr. Cayce.

The reading states on page two, paragraph four, “we find Venus, Mercury, Jupiter and Uranus the ruling forces;” but it does not speak of Mars, Saturn and the Moon which are also extremely powerful. Mars is the ruler of itself, Uranus, the rising sign and the Moon. Saturn rules this above-mentioned conjunction of Venus and Mercury.

On page two, paragraph seven the reading warns against the mind “becoming sidetracked, or becoming…as it were…too intense upon any ONE influence”. The planetary positions in this chart do not bear this out. The planets are well placed and cover many signs, seven to be exact while the Midheaven holds another; all of which show good integration and balance. An unusual feature of this horoscope is the fact that it seems to work on two planes at all times. This is due to the exact conjunction of Venus and Mercury.

The planet ruling this conjunction is really the strongest planet in the chart as Venus and Mercury are on the cusp of the tenth house; the most important position, that of the Midheaven. Saturn being the ruler of the sign Capricorn in which they are placed also is the natural ruler of ANY 10th house. This makes this chart unusual to a degree and yet Saturn is not mentioned in the list of ruling planets.

The part of Capricorn holding this configuration is said to relate to “a new order of things”. Persons born under this are forerunners of better things - using systems and organizations (Capricornian traits) to further their ends. Large economic mergers, business and politics are associated with this section of the heavens. The keyword Co-ordination is used to describe the mode of expression best suited to this part of Capricorn.

It is interesting to note that Saturn is placed in the last degree of Virgo, ruled by Mercury but traveled by progression into Libra ruled by Venus. After staying here for years it retrograded back into Virgo. This shows the integration of the chart still more as you cannot leave out either Venus or Mercury, they being exactly together at the moment of birth. Saturn in the sign Virgo on the material plane gives hard work and much detail. “Duty calls”.

The paragraph on page two about Mercury the mental planet, and Venus the beautiful is true enough but they represent those qualities in every person’s chart and the outstanding sign and position of these two planets is not referred to. The good aspect in this December 9th chart between Venus and Uranus (which Cayce mentions as “at variance”) gives humor, love of music and much personal magnetism. If the planets were “at variance” there would be an opposite tendency and would be especially shown as to non-cooperation with fellow workers or anyone contacted. This does not fit this chart. Also Mr. F. would be in the words of Carter “a grouser and a malcontent” which is not borne out by the planets. Saturn ruling Mercury (the mind) is in good aspect to Uranus and Mars and it would take an adverse aspect of these planets to justify the forementioned reading.

The planets Mars and Uranus are in conjunction and well aspected by the others and therefore give a brusque way, a tendency to be outspoken and a tendency to be unconventional. There is no “soft-soaping” in this particular setup. In contradistinction to the adverse aspect referred to by Cayce, we have originality and leadership, instead of the inability to get along with people (as the words “at variance” would indicate). Also there would be intense spurts of enthusiasm that would die out leaving things half-done, which is not indicated.

The Sun is in the part of Sagitarius belonging to transmuted Sex and is known as the Aries-decanate. We find Aries rising and also holding the Moon; and so Sun, Moon and rising sign (individuality, personality and method of expression and also personal appearance respectively) work in close cooperation. The Sun or vital center is in good aspect (trine) with the Ascendant (degree rising) which is one of the most valued aspects to be found in a chart at birth. This part of Aries that rises gives those who have it, the desire to search for new fields of expression as well as endowing them with restless minds and wonderful executive ability.

The Sun is also in the so-called royal part of the sign and is ruled by the humanitarian and occult Jupiter. Jupiter is placed in Pisces a “double” sign. The ruler of Pisces, Neptune, is placed in the double sign of Gemini. Everywhere we find the double-planetary setup and seeing that Venus and Mercury are “double” and are in the 9th house, or house of “penetration” on every plane, it bears out the possibility of the life being lived on two planes at once. The 8th house holding the Sun is occult and having to do with the afterlife promises fame after death.

Gemini holds the intuitional planet Neptune and the 5th degree is very important. It gives power to note details as well as to comprehend the whole and also gives the power to see correct proportions. This degree also relates to aviation. Zain says a person with an important planet in this part of Gemini can easily become an intellectual giant, for they assimilate all that they contact and their deductions rise spontaneously from the astral brain.

A close interrelationship between Neptune and Jupiter here is shown in the fact that Neptune is in the Mercury-decanate of Gemini and the planet Jupiter (placed in Neptune’s sign Pisces) is in the Neptunian decanate of the same. This is the same as everyone speaking each other’s language altho living in different places. This part of Pisces is also known as the “secret-service” part of the sign and is also placed in the 12th house (representing hidden work) in this particular chart. Zain again says this part of Pisces denoted “a detective of the highest order, whether their talent be directed to social conditions, or to the wider mysteries of universal relations.”

We note that Jupiter has now entered into the next decante of Pisces which is between 20 and 30 degrees, and is known to be one of restriction and limitation. Those having a humanitarian planet here in their charts are supposed to have taken this on in order to help humanity.

Those having Aries Ascending coincide with the mundane chart of the heavens as Aries is on the first house of the heavenly horoscope. They should therefore feel the pulse of the world better. The Moon here is in the first degree of the sign, a powerful position. It means “divine fire” and its symbol is the triangle - denoting both flame and mind. Body, mind and spirit, are therefore correlated with a tendency to pioneer and lead. As the triangle points upward, so does the life. There is also a coloring of death or destruction to this part of the sign, perhaps explained by the kind of work you have had to do.

The last 10 degrees of Aries or the Sagittarian-decanate which I think is rising, is ruled by Jupiter and leans towards philosophical things and AGAIN we find a tendency to champion lost causes, etc. We must also not overlook the musical angle shown by Aries and Sagittarius, and the imagery and perception of Pisces together with the necessary routine or practice of Saturn in the sign Virgo.

All places in this horoscope show a spiritual and humanitarian coloring which is intensified by the strategic placing of the stars Difda; Aldebaran; Hamal and Fomalhaut as well as some others. This gives points of energy or mass. Anyone possessing these can give out to others thru these points. Planets in the first degrees of signs do the same thing, and we find Mars in 1 Scorpio, Moon in 1 Aries and Saturn holding jurisdiction by progression over 1 Libra.

Mars is in a creative place in conjunction with Uranus. And both are posited in the house relating to “public contacts and partnerships”. It is connected with plans, maps, graphs etc. This also draws towards magnetism and healing power. This 7th house also describes marriage relationships and these 2 planets so placed is apt to give an impulsive marriage with much necessary adjustment necessary. Mars and Uranus also give contact with dangerous characters and dangerous work but very good results.

Your Sun in the 8th house of death was in a dangerous year when you were about 44. Will you check on this? [Was in grave physical danger doing Federal work in “Bloody” Harlan County etc.] However the apparently dangerous Sun position is trine the Ascendant and that is a marvellous protector as well as the fact that two malefics, Mars and Uranus are unusually well aspected.

Strong analyzation and a constant desire to theorize is shown by the relationship of Venus and Mercury. This is especially strong as far as your emotions go, because the planets of mind and heart are together but Mercury has more power in the chart and therefore your mind rules your heart. Saturn going back to the final jurisdiction of Mercury (in Virgo) instead staying in the sign of Venus proves this conclusively. If it were not for Mars and Uranus breaking the bad aspect between Saturn and Venus you would have had more disappointments than you have already had.

The positions of planets seem to indicate that things are apt to come to you after middle age. Mercury which is in good aspect to Mars also gives optimism and Uranus gives humor so you are well balanced to hold off the great discipliner Saturn! Any rebellion that you felt in early life due to this square was also helped by an opposition of the Moon and Saturn. But of late years Saturn has turned and is backing away and will continue in this retrogression. You had distrust then and you still have but just because you have been burned once does not mean that you will be again. Now that you have a working-chart put up for the correct time you can compare other people’s planets in relationship to yours and know upon whom you can depend. You have a flair for choosing the right person for the right job and this is given by a sextile between the Moon (the people) and Neptune (intuition). It (this sextile) also gives a desire to work subrosa and is apt to give symbolic visions at certain times.

On the negative side of the chart, your Saturn is so aspected so as to give spells of worry, depression, over-sensitiveness. However so much activity in the chart and a desire to better conditions keeps you going on but there is always a shadow of the above. This planet Saturn also gives a very accurate turn of mind in dealings with fellow workers and falling in the 6th house or that relating to fellow workers makes you a hard taskmaster as far as details go.

There is a kindly broadminded ray from Jupiter which gives facility in the matter of business correspondence, reports, orders, short trips, pamphlets. Certainly this is in direct contradistinction to the “variance” aspect given to you by Mr. Cayce! There is an inner trust and a practical application to matters given by this same aspect.

Impatience is one of your chief faults and it comes from two main things. The impulsive sign Aries rising and the restless Moon in the same sign. Aries is a fire sign and the Moon is a water planet and when fire hits water you get steam! Then too a wide square (9 degrees) between Mercury and Saturn gives impatience also. Your mind tends to jump ahead and you sometimes forget that the average mind cannot keep up with you.

Your idealism comes from a good Mercury-Uranus-Jupiter configuration which Mr. Cayce stated was a bad one. Neptune the planet of idealism is also beautifully aspected. The total disregarding of this important occult planet in Mr. C’s reading is rather strange because they set so much stress on the higher planes and Neptune is the chief significator in these matters. Venus also tends to give magnanimity and a predilection for the arts. Genuine affection and a love for the many is found here in the relationship between Mars, Uranus and Venus-Mercury for there the heart and the mind are one. Uranus is noted for its impersonality.

There is a tendency to sarcasm as Saturn and Venus are not very friendly but there is no MEAN streak to this. According to the adverse aspect discovered by Mr. C, there should be spitefulness. Strangely enough the REAL squares are disregarded entirely by Mr. Cayce, and totally non-existant ones are put in, so I do not see how the date of birth could have been consulted in any way!

The aspects between Venus, Mercury and Uranus give intuitive powers and a fine perception of love which is so impersonal as to appear hard but which works out for the best interests of all concerned. Uranus is the planet of universal betterment, by out-of-the-ordinary means. This planet together with Mars causes nervous irritability and leads towards dangerous pursuits, but gives great courage and being well aspected, gives protection. Uranus and Jupiter in GOOD aspect, contrary to Mr. C, gives fine judgement as to your own original views on the metaphysical. I find that a good aspect between Saturn and Neptune (which you have) is apt to give a feeling of a stronger personality in another world, and the desire to follow them or to work for them. Saturn square the cusp of the house of sisters shows obstacles or disappointments in this direction.

Any disappointment regarding fellow workers not being able to keep up with you, comes from an angle of 150 degrees and always gives disappointment. Just let it pass as it is one of your crosses. By the position of your Jupiter you know that tho the outcome of your acts may be invisible, they are doing their work all the time and sometime the results will be shown.

The fact that almost all planets are posited in known occult positions is not mentioned in the Cayce reading. There is so much vagueness expressed and symbology used to express that vagueness that the reading could really be used to hit any person with any sort of leanings towards things of a higher nature. There is nothing distinctive in this interpretation. I cannot see that the chart was ever put up for the date and time given, and yet the words “Astrological aspects” are used, which gives the impression that it was erected Astrologically.

Have yours of the 6th - thank you very much for sending me a copy of the report by Miss Harding. However if you are a student of Psychic phenomena am sure you know one is a psychic reading - the other what is supposed to be a fact determined by general accepted students of astrology - of one school or another. Please know however I am not trying to defend the Life reading nor to compare it with any Astrological reading - it doesn’t purport to be an astrological reading - doesn’t reason from the same basis at all. The only thing is that some terms that are used in such are used in same - but it is not purported to be such.

My only purpose in same Mr. [2386] is this - can such readings be of a help to individuals - that is what we call LIFE readings - out of the 11 or 12 hundred that have been given more than 98 percent of them have expressed their belief they have proven helpful to them - that is my only reason for ever giving one for they to my little mind present too fantastic tales to me. Oh have met many Astrologers - possibly the best ever had in this country was Miss Adams - there was the first comparison that was ever made - when an astrological reading was asked for in body and chart it agrees with the better ones - when a LIFE is asked for often it does not agree with a chart - why I do not know except from what the information itself says - “that is this an individual has a free will - and doesn’t necessarily have to follow the inclinations from astrological aspects - and when they don’t it creates different problems in their experience which are taken into account.”

The whole answer then to me - can information given in a Life reading be helpful the answer is as said above.

No - again do not think or believe am guided by an individual intilect [intellect?] outside my body - the information - as well as many who are called first class mediums say “it comes from the universal consciousness” whether that makes sense or not to not io [is?] not know - again the proof is what is the experience of those who have and do apply suggestions made for help.

I have your letter of the 5th instant. Confined to the house for several days with a severe cold, I am able to answer it at once. Otherwise, in these turbulent and busy times, I might not have gotten around to it for some time.

A research engineer by profession, I am, by training and temperament, not a “joiner”. While I respect God and serve him according to such light as has been given me, I have but small respect and no use for established religion and the churches. Which is to say that I don’t go to church nor associate with the cultists.

To lay claim to a formalized knowledge of God’s intentions and purposes is, to my mind, a confession of ignorance and an impertinence bordering on blasphemy. To assure others of, and instruct them in, a knowledge one does not have is in all cases misguided, and in many cases dishonest.

In this day and age, there is a strong trend towards finding things out before expressing blind faith in them, and, after having found them out beyond reasonable doubt, to accept them only as workable hypotheses subject to change, at any time, in the light of better information.

While the line of demarcation between faith and knowledge can seldom exactly be located, these two attitudes of mind can be exactly differentiated; faith being the (often) blind acceptance of purported fact without the mental reservation of a possible future change of mind in the light of better evidence, and knowledge being the acceptance of demonstrably workable data with, however, the ever-present willingness to throw this data overboard in favor of wider and more workable horizons.

We are approaching the age of knowledge - still quite a distance off in many fields - and leaving the hospitable and easy shores of faith. To my mind, this transition, when accomplished, will vindicate our claim to being cast in the image and likeness of God and bring us a step nearer to His Angels.

In the light of the foregoing, I offer you and your respected father a prayer which, on the spur of a single instant, came to me in inspiration. I call it the technical man’s prayer.

“O Lord, Hear my supplication!

Open my eyes to Truth, that out of Your all-comprehending mercy and understanding I may see Your world and my fellowmen as You have made them - not as I wish them to be.

Unseal my ears to the eternal rhythm and cadence of Your Universe, that I may hear Your voice and word in the causes of all things - not the empty echo of my own pronouncements.

Enlighten my understanding, that I may know that behind all that which is, You are - not the feeble reflection of my own personality.

Teach me to believe but one thing, - Your reality and ever-present nearness to me.

This desire to lean on my own lunch, i.e. to be cautiously guided by demonstrable and workable data whether obtained by myself or others, has made me an agnostic and an iconoclast - but not in the usually disagreeable sense. I’m widely open, in fact flamingly open, to all aspects of truth and fact. Material presented as a dictum in the old “believe it or else” fashion receives small comfort at my hands.

All of which means that while I have read up widely on the various current religions and systems of metaphysics, I have joined none of them. In most of them I have found their doctrines clothed in mystic language, or their higher knowledge reserved for the chosen. Thus a most charming and cultured lady the other day told me when I asked her what “work in the temple” meant as it came through in automatic writing, that I wasn’t far enough along to understand and so could not be told. To which I replied that doubtless she might not be “far enough along” to comprehend the Riemannian system of multi-dimensional geometry, but that never the less, I, and all followers of the Muse of Rigorous Thought, would at any time be delighted to explain it in simplest terms to her or to anybody else who might show an interest. And that is exactly the quarrel I have with most of the established mystics cults. My idea of a happy Utopian world is, in part, a place with a huge library where all accumulated knowledge and information is stored, a place available to all without exception.

In this frame of mind, I have had to keep away from the association with persons who, in the field of psychics, do not follow the scientific method. Which is not to say that I have not worked in this field a great deal. And I have associated myself with many who feel as I do about it.

Early last year, I formed a Group here in Los Angeles, and our purpose is to study psychic phenomena from the scientific angle. I am enclosing our first Bulletin. We have been unable to go further than this because I have been unable to get certain materials and supplies because of the priority situation. However God willing, I shall go ahead with this Group and with this work the very moment that I can get the needed technical supplies. And if, happily, I and my apparatus look in on a direct voice sitting, and if it actually occurs as claimed, then we are all going to know about it beyond any question of doubt. Every factor will be controlled, and we will come out with knowledge as opposed to faith - at least in so far as the actuality of the phenomena are concerned.

Incidentally, I have established very fine and well equipped laboratories out here and, again God willing, before I get through, I’m going to have every technical means that can be devised and available for this kind of work.

So much for my objective studies. On the purely subjective side, I am sitting regularly with a friend, a retired playwright, and most interesting material of a subjective nature is coming through.

You can well imagine that I am more or less persona non grata with the professional mediums and mystics, in which this locality abounds. For that reason I don’t believe I can be of much benefit to you in the distribution of your book.

However I shall send you a page of ads in the local newspapers, and maybe you can compile a list from it. While everybody knows that my whole effort is aimed at proving, not disproving, the actuality of psychic phenomena, I’m distrusted by most, and cordially disliked by others, because, for instance, I won’t play ball with Big Chief Tall Standing Corn whose only claim to actuality is a deep bass voice heard rolling out of a cone in a pitch black room filled with ardent believers; or, again, because, in the soft red and non-revealing glow of a materialization seance, I don’t bubble over with bliss when my deceased grand-father, the late and distinguished […] gentleman of the old school

• with side-burns - and one of the great intellectuals of his day, struts forth from a cabinet in a bed sheet and addresses me in execrable German! (Maybe my name […] and blond hair had something to do with a supposed Teutonic origin which actually is Scotch-Irish.)

And again, when I turn to, say, the Rosicrucians, and get handed a ponderous volume in which, minutely set forth, is the whole history of the sidereal universe with all God’s intentions and purposes - well, when I want to know how I can get in on all that information, I get invited to join the kindergarten and work up. I couldn’t be shown anything, of course. Oh dear me no! I must put in months and years of arduous preparation - at so much a throw! The fact that I’d be welcome in most any laboratory in the country to witness most any experiment, whether it was exactly in my field or not - no, that’s not how they work it. It takes spiritual preparation to love God and desire to see His works, according to these good people. The fact that tens of thousands of people, good, bad and indifferent, have seen, and continue to see, all manner of phenomena at all manner of times and in all manner of places all over the earth, - this has no bearing, of course. “The inner temple” remains a mystery and scientific heathen are not wanted.

If you have any correspondents out here who might see this picture eye to eye with me, I’d like to meet them. I’m perfectly able to understand and appreciate the work of your father - because he makes no mystery of it and gives it out freely to all in need. And I’m very sorry that I’m so far from Virginia Beach as I should very much like to see some of his work. Maybe I shall some day. Please give him my respects and kind regards. I had the pleasure of hearing you speak two weeks ago at the Hotel McAlpin, and last Monday attended the meeting in Steinway Hall conducted by your son. At the time, I made up my mind that I would write to you and request a LIFE reading

I particularly noted that part of your talk in which you stated that no person had ever appealed to you for help without receiving it, and also that part of your son’s address in which he stated, in effect, that the intensity of an individual’s desire for enlightenment was in a sense a measure of you ability to help him.

I wish that at this time I might tell you a little about myself, my work my reactions toward life and perhaps thereby convince you of my complete and absolute sincerity in seeking the enlightenment which perhaps you can offer me. In the interest of a proper evaluation of a Cayce reading, should I be so fortunate as to receive one, I feel that you would not want me to disclose anything concerning myself which might act as a guide to your subjective vision. I am hoping, it seems almost beyond hope, that in coming to you I will at long last receive some concrete and substantial evidence which will sustain me in the belief that life here is not, to quote a well-known cynic, merely “a discreditable episode on one of the minor planets.”

To a consciousness such as mine, it is extremely difficult to base the actions of an entire life-time upon a philosophy best described as “as if”. To faithfully work towards goals which one may never see in this life time, to attempt to live an altruistic and unselfish life, to bear with equanimity the vicissitudes of life heightened as they are today by these hard and uncertain times - to attempt to do all this upon the authority of nothing more than an unproven postulate, is very hard and lately has become very saddening to me.

My great need today, and it seems to grow every hour in intensity, is to definitely KNOW something about the immortality of the human soul and to be able from this knowledge to find a reasonable purpose for continued existence in this very unsatisfactory environment. All my life I have acted AS IF I had such knowledge, that is I have tried to live in such a way as to enable me to be reasonablely unashamed of my actions here when and if I am ever called to an accounting. But of late it has been born in upon me that there must somewhere be a reasonable answer to this most reasonable question, namely am I an eternal being and is there reason and purpose in all things? Can you answer this question for me in some way, ANY way, which will leave me in no further doubt? If so, I will bless you for it, for it has never been done before, and I have knocked many times. And if you can’t, then I will still be grateful to you for your attempts and try to find what solace I may in the knowledge that others, at least, have been more fortunate.

Certain things I may perhaps tell you without evidential loss to the reading when and if received. I am employed, but have several dependents whose support, without going into debt, is a real problem. For this reason I can only offer you $10 for the reading, which sum has been saved from my own lunch and incidental expense budget. I feel that I should not make inroads upon the family’s budget for this reading, as it is my own personal problem, not theirs, and they should not be forced to skimp unduly because of any need of mine.

I have followed your work closely for a number of years and know about these readings which I understand go backwards in time past this life to former lives.

Idle curiosity does not prompt me. For many years much material has come up into my consciousness which I cannot place in this life, so much so that several years ago I wrote a lengthy manuscript on the subject which has had a fairly wide private circulation. The thought comes to me now with much urgency that I should enlist your help in determining what all this is about.

I do not have your correspondence with me - this is being written from Salt Lake City - and so do not know to whom to make the check for $20 payable. Also I must have exact instructions, should you wish to undertake this task for me, as to what part I must play in the matter - the when and the where etc. It so happens that I travel a great deal and if you must know exactly where I am at the time of the sitting, it will perhaps be safest for you to set the exact time of the sitting and advise me of it as soon as possible. This will enable me to advise you by wire 24 hours ahead of time, or sooner if I know it myself, exactly where I will be. I will then be able to select a convenient spot in my travels, adjust the time differences, and give you the exact street number, city and State, by wire.

I expect to be in Hollywood at the above address the early part of next week, and I hope to be able to remain there until after election. Thus should you be able to set an early date, the sitting would find me at home in my own room, which would work out better. I suggest that you write me airmail to the above address where I will pick up your letter within the week and will AT ONCE airmail you a Post Office Money Order made out as you may direct.
