GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes.
-
As we find, there is rather the complication of disturbances that prevent the better normal functioning. These have to do with conditions which have existed for some time as related to the chemical reactions in the system; especially as related to the supply of nerve and blood forces in the lower extremities, and the hindrances that have combined with this general condition to produce same.
-
Also we have those conditions as related to the digestive forces, or the activity of the gall duct and its reaction upon the digestive system and the assimilations through the system.
-
To be sure, this is contributed to in the present by the lack of being able to masticate thoroughly; and thus the lack of the activity of the salivary glands and THEIR relation to the digestive forces of the system.
-
Also those conditions complicate the disturbances in the nervous system, as to the eyes, and the general strain upon same.
-
As we find, in making administrations for helpful influences, all of these conditions are to be taken into consideration.
-
First, we would have the correct fitting of glasses for the body.
-
After each meal we would take a quarter teaspoonful of Alcaroid, first dissolved in a little water and then the glass filled with water. Do this after each meal for at least a week. then leave it off for a like period. then repeat the whole procedure throughout the period of the corrective measures which we will indicate, until there is a better gastric flow and less acidity through the system. Or take it five days and then leave off five, and so on.
-
Under the direction of a hydrotherapist such as Backman, we would have those corrections in the WHOLE of the cerebrospinal system, with special reference to the RELAXING of the body with the hot water and then the correction made, and then the application of the hot and cold packs along the cerebrospinal system; with special reference being given to the sacral and the lumbar axis, coordinating the rest of the cerebrospinal system with those corrections made.
-
In the diet, - add the food values that carry an extra quantity of thymine; such as in plenty of whole wheat cracked cereal - that is well cooked in a double boiler, and eaten with milk rather than cream. If any sweetening, use honey rather than cane sugar. Also have plenty of steel cut oats.
-
Take beef juice two or three times each day, but sipped very slowly - at least a tablespoonful three times each day, but take ten minutes or more to sip that quantity; eating with same a whole wheat wafer. This does not mean beef broths or soups, but the pure beef juice itself.
-
Eat plenty of fresh vegetables, both raw and cooked.
-
And for the eliminations, - let those corrections as indicated in the cerebrospinal system aid; assisting same when necessary with colonics or high enemas.
-
These should bring the better conditions for this body, [2394].
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) How is my blood pressure? (A) This varies. The effect is rather from eyes then from heart.
-
(Q) What causes pain in region of liver in the mornings? (A) As indicated, the lack of the proper activity in the eliminating or excretory functioning of the liver.
-
(Q) May anything be done to strengthen my legs and feet which have always been weak? (A) As indicated, the corrections that will allow better circulation; and the addition to the system of those properties as will build nerve energy and blood forces through the system.
-
(Q) Are there adhesions from having feet strapped so many times, due to frequent falling? (A) Not adhesions so much. Rather the disturbances as indicated; though this has contributed to making the poor circulation, - while the real cause has existed in the lumbar and sacral areas.
-
(Q) Considering my physical condition, what kind of work or occupation would be best for me? (A) The care of the very young, or companion with those of elderly years.
-
We are through for the present.

…, St., N.Y. City
Dear Mr. Cayce.
I should have answered your letter and the Health Reading long before this, but knowing you were in New York I waited until I knew you had returned to Virginia Beach.
I want to thank you very much indeed for the Reading. Of course all you said I know, if you had told me something else I probably would have put it in scrap basket.
Seventeen years ago I had a lumbar puncture to find out condition of fluid in spine. It was all right. I also had gall bladder trouble which was helped by my doctor. The eye glasses I knew I needed very much, but cannot purchase same until I get a position and am earning some money. I called up Dr. Backman and went to see him. I had two treatments this week, was to have a third today but his treatments are so terrible that they just lay me flat, so I was not able to walk to bus. He says all my trouble comes from fallen stomach. I have worn a special corset to relieve that condition for twenty-five years. He also said my liver was inactive, also bladder. He claims that these are the cause of spinal, legs, and foot trouble.
He not only massages abdomen but pounds it so I can hardly catch my breath. He does same to back and then uses vibration. After that came the hot and cold packs. It all took three hours. At end I could hardly walk the block to bus. He stopped beef juice. I can only eat chicken, lamb & fish, vegetables and steamed fruits. He wants me to have a treatment every other day. Says it will take three months to cure me. He says my muscles are very flabby, and circulation poor. I feel all he says is true and I want to take the treatments, but he will have to be easier on me, or I’ll not be able to go on with them.
He seems more anxious to help people than to make any money. I have at least two friends who want to go to him. They all can pay him, and I will also as soon as I get something to do. I thank you for sending me to him. I will not need another reading or check up for he will know what to do for me. He has a wonderful record of twenty five years. Not one case that he could not cure. So I live in hopes of being a well woman even at my age. My mother is living at 91 and takes care of herself. So I have something to live up to. Again my sincere thanks and appreciation. May the Lord continue to bless you in all your undertakings.
Sincerely, [2394]
R2. 1/19/41 [2394]‘s letter to EC:
1 Mount Kimble Avenue Morristown, N.J.
My dear Mr. Cayce.
I presume you have expected to hear from me before this. The first five weeks with Dr. Backman I was most miserable and threatened to leave him if he didn’t go more gently with me. Finally he realized that I could not stand such severe treatment and he was more gentle. The last two weeks I felt fine and looked forward to the treatments.
A week ago Saturday I receive a telegram from my son telling me of my mother’s illness and I had to leave N.Y. City immediately and come out here, at the above address. It is a Home for Ladies - where they do their own cooking, but if sick are not taken care of. My mother will be 92 in April. In morning she goes to hospital for observation and it is malnutrition.
Why I am writing to you just now is that there is a charming woman in this home who is so miserable. She now has an osteopath. She has a weak back and left leg and foot which seem lifeless. No strength. The doctor’s do not seem to know the cause. I wish she could go to Dr. Backman but she cannot go out. Can’t walk.
I wondered if you would be willing to give her a free health Reading, and if you could tell her who to go to for treatments. Do you know of the Morristown physicians.
I have been so thankful for your sending me to Dr. Backman. All the women I know have something the matter with them and I wish they might go to Dr. Backman. If I had not had the seven weeks of treatments, three a week, I would not have been able to have taken care of my mother as I am now doing.
The lady I mentioned above is a Mrs. [2446]. Her birthday was Aug 15, 1873. She does not look over fifty, is so pretty and attractive. Has been married twice, but never had any children. She has a small annuity and lives here where it only costs her for her food.
If you are willing to give her a Reading, will you write her setting day and hour and she will reply to you.
There seems so much unnecessary illness in the world. I wish I could help all my friends.
I haven’t been able to do any work myself this month, and now I may just have to look after my mother the rest of her life.
I will take one treatment a week and go in from [?] him for it. Thanking you so much for your kindness and goodness. Best wishes for your continued success.
Sincerely, [2394]

… Street N.Y. City
Dear Mr. Cayce.
I owe you a hundred apologies for not writing to you before this, but I didn’t have anything worth while to write about.
I went to Dr. Backman three months. He didn’t do a thing for me. He was most disagreeable and kept sending me bills, first ten treatments he sent me a bill for
50.00 and then one for85.00. Of course I couldn’t pay him. I stopped first of March. He claims that every body has liver trouble. My present doctor says no one with my complexion and condition of eyes could have liver trouble. I had a terrible winter. I dreaded going for his treatments because he hurt me so, and my abdomen was sore all the time. I had a bad knee and he took all meat from me, said it was acid, and rheumatism. In February I had Grippe and Intestinal Flu. I was awfully sick, and my indigestion kept getting worse.
Recently I went to see my doctor that I went to in September. Analysis of urine showed I had alkaline reaction instead of acid. I was getting weaker and weaker. Instead of rheumatism I have arthritis, no liver trouble and Indices is normal. My indigestion is nervous indigestion just as arthritis is nerves. Since taking her medicines I am feeling much better, and eating meat every day and an egg - also cooked vegetable and steamed fruits. No raw vegetables or fruits or fruit juices.
I certainly was discouraged after spending all those months with Dr. Backman and getting worse instead of better.
I am sorry that I can’t report better results from your advice. You just didn’t see it right. I have had this condition for years, and now I am so happy that finally I am getting good results from present treatments.
My best wishes to you for your success -
Sincerely, [2394]
You just sent me to the wrong man, and Mrs. [2067] told me another of your clients was having the same experience with Dr. Backman. You better find a better man.
R4. 7/31/41 EC’s letter to [2394]:
Dear Mrs. [2394]
Thanks very much for yours of the 27th. Am glad indeed to know that you have found just what you were looking for. No, we are not all in the same consciousness, and what answers to one does nothing for the other.
Hope you keep on the good way and can carry on as you wish. May His Blessings attend you in what is according to His will.
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce

…, St., New York City Apt. 40
Dear Mr. Cayce.
Yours of October 31 just received. I will keep the appointment with you at above address on Nov 6, 10.30 to 11.30 as you suggested.
There are a number of troubles bothering me. How is my blood pressure? Does it cause the headaches I am having this fall? Or is it my eyes? Since having my teeth out I have suffered much more indigestion. I have to be careful of fats, sweets and acids. This fall I have been treating myself with Homeopathic medicine as electropathic [?] made me worse. So I have improved my stomach with Humphreys Specific No. 10. I do not have to take it constantly now as I did a month ago.
A Doctor I went to in September gave me Vitamin B Complex which I could not take until I improved my stomach. Now I can take them.
Of course I am constipated, that is I can’t expel since I had a rectal operation. The muscles seem inactive, so when I need it I take a small dose of Salhapatica. Some times I use enema instead.
For some time I have a pain in the region of the liver in the morning. My diet is vegetable & cooked fruits whole wheat bread. My legs and back have always been weak. Last Saturday I had a terrible fall. I turned my ankle which threw me to the floor. I was leaving a friends apartment. I felt so faint. I went back and laid down. When I fell my left foot turned under me. I landed on my knees and hands pushing my arms up into shoulder sockets which pained me for days. When I reached home I didn’t know, for I could not - lean my weight on my left foot. It felt as if I had ruptured the muscles on outside of foot. I used home remedies, Epsom salt baths, ice pack, and on Wednesday I strapped it to hold muscles in place, so it is gradually getting better. Yesterday I put on my shoes, before that I couldn’t stand them. That is the fifth time I have hurt that left foot. I have fallen all my life. When a child they called me Tumble Bug. Both of my feet are numb to ankle. When I take off my shoes at night my foot drops like a piece of lead. I always wear an Oxford and a small arch supporter. One osteopath said the cause was adhesions from having them strapped so many times. Can you give the cause? I think the feet and weakness of legs is my greatest problem.
What occupation would be best for me? I have served [?] when I could get it. Also have companion, and a Convalescence nurse. They say I am fine in sick room, but I am not strong enough to do any lifting on account of weak back. Really my physical condition has been a great handicap. Just now I can not do any thing.
I wrote you for a FREE Reading, and I understand that is what you will give me.
Yours sincerely, [2394]
