This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the home of Mr. David E. Kahn, 20 Woods Lane, Scarsdale, N.Y., this 14th day of November, 1940, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [2400], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., via friend of Mrs. [1992].

Born May 14, 1889, in Richland Center, Wisconsin. Time of Reading 3:50 to 4:45 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.

1. GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, and that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: (In going back over years from the present - ” - ‘37 - awakening - ‘35 - ‘21 - a period of wonderment and discouragement - ‘20 - ‘12 - a change - the mental developments - ‘09 - ” etc., on back to birth date.)

3. Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [2400].

4. Much in these records presents itself for interpretation, - much that would be of rather an unusual nature, as to the symbols, as to the influences of such, and the many phases in human experience of determining factors in the affairs of individual activity.

5. These interpretations, though, are chosen with the desire and purpose that this may be a helpful experience for this entity; enabling it to better fulfill those purposes for which it entered this present experience.

6. To be sure, much has ben accomplished. Many phases of the entity’s activities have been, and are, a light, a helpful influence, for those in various activities who are assisting in the awakening of man to his relationships to Creative Forces. These are commendable, - these should be for greater satisfaction, greater contentment, kept in the experience.

Do not wander too far afield, but know in Whom and in what ye have believed, and do believe. Know that He, the author of thy faith, is able to keep that committed unto Him against any and EVERY experience that may arise in thy relationships to people as individuals or as a mass, or as to things that may become a part of thy experience.

6. How can I regain confidence in myself?

7. Why have I felt never really at home anywhere?

8. Much might be given as to the symbols, but these have not so much importance in the present as the indication of the entity’s own individual activity or work. These merely indicate, in the present, the high sensitivity of this entity; its abilities to draw upon the universal forces, as well as that which is only partial or just beginning in its development.

9. What relationship existed in former lives between my mother, […] and me? Why were we always so antagonistic?]

10. Hence the warning, - know the author and the finisher of thy faith. For, there is a way that seemeth good unto an individual, but the end thereof is separation - or death. Hold fast to Him, - who is the way, the beginning, the end of man’s consciousness of God, and His promises - that are thine, if thy whole trust is put in Him.

11. The astrological aspects, or indications as arise from the planetary forces, are not as commonly determined, - that is, by the position of the planets, or the sign through which thy planet or sun or moon are passing at thy birth. Rather, the activities ye have made in the earth have their definite influence upon all of these. For, each soul is a portion of the whole, or as a corpuscle in the body of God. Thus do ye rule - in THY sphere of activity - those forces that are about thee. Whether these are positive or negative, in that brought to thy own consciousness, depends upon the use or application of thy WILL, thy birthright that is given to each soul, that it may be equal to, one with that creative source; knowing itself to be itself, and yet one with that Creative Force or God.

12. Hence we find Mercury, Venus - Venus with all its healing forces, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus as the influences through which the consciousness of this soul in interims between earthly sojourns has gathered strength, vision, insight, hopes, and at times fears.

13. In Mercury we find the high mental abilities in the material effects, as well as in the mental aspects of men’s relationship to spiritual and material things.

14. We find in Venus those abilities of the healing forces that are a part of the entity’s experience, that are to be applied more in thy dealings with those with whom ye may come in contact day by day. For, know - as ye do it unto the least of thy brethren, ye do it unto thy Maker. This is a law - a law of love, a law of justice, a law of mercy, a law of God.

Embrace it. Make it thine, and thus fulfill thy place, thy ability to make known to others that love as was manifested in Him, - who is the way, the truth, the light, the peace that may come to a troubled world about thee. Bring harmony to all, as thy presence does, as thy word does, to the consciousness of those about thee. But put the accent upon the peace HE has promised, as His way, as His great commandment, “Love one another.”

13. In Jupiter we find the great universal consciousness that arises latent and manifest, and is growing in the consciousness of the entity, that is to be magnified through the activities of healing others, - even by word and by hand, as ye meet them.

14. We find in Uranus those extremes that have been so much a part of the entity’s experience through this sojourn, as well as its interest in the mystic and the occult forces in the experiences of the entity and of others, the sudden likes and dislikes that have been a mental and a material consciousness of the entity; those mental forces that have through this experience brought periods when fear and doubt ruled the self, - then other periods when fear and doubt were felt as to others’ interest or determinations in certain directions. And yet, through those periods when creative forces have been made manifest in the experience, there has been drawn into the consciousness of the entity that great source of influence that has brought harmony and peace into the experience of the entity here and now.

15. As to the appearances in the earth plane, - not all may be indicated in the present. For, as given, many of those things called karmic forces have been met by the entity, in the relationships with others, in the various spheres of activities of the entity. Thus, while they form the background of the entity’s thought, they have passed from the well-being for the present. For, God is God of the living and not of the dead. For, in Him is life, life everlasting - God of the living - as is that spirit of truth, of sincerity, of purpose, of faith, of kindness, of brotherly love, and most of all patience.

16. Keep that thou hast gradually grown in this, that ye may meet it in Him, and in the awareness of thy relationships to the whole. For, the POWER of meeting is in thyself. For thy body is indeed the temple of the living God, and there He hath promised to meet thee. THERE ye find the answer. For He hath not sought that ye rise upward, nor go over the seas nor beneath, but has given, “open thine own heart, that may enter and abide with thee.” THERE, then, is the kingdom - within.

17. As to the appearances, - these that are given, then, are the influences that in the immediate future bring thy problems, thy activities in this experience:

18. Before this the entity was active as Vivian Conway, in Cornwall. Yes, and the walls of thy activity are still among the living experiences of some, as they offer shelter even now for those weary of strife, of hate, and seek to know the peace as passeth understanding!

19. In the experience the entity was given to those activities in aiding those who were broken of body, disturbed in mind, and bereft even of hope at times.

20. Thus those abilities that are latent and manifested in the personal, individual activities to which the entity may in the present give itself. For, as indicated, as thy presence radiates comfort to those that seek, so may the work of thy hands, the words of thy mouth, bring hope, - yea, faith, in that which answers to that call within the hearts and souls of those here, there, all about thee.

21. Do this, in HIS name - who IS the life and the light, the hope of the world!

22. Before that the entity was in the Promised Land, during those periods when the Master of masters walked in the earth.

23. The entity was among those who grew up among those peoples when there were questionings and fears as concerning the edicts even of the children that were to be a part of that experience of peace.

24. Oft is it indicated by man that the era was a period when peace reigned in the earth, - yea, TRUE, politically; but in the minds, in the hearts of many individuals there was strife and turmoil and wonderment as to what MUST be that aid that could bring the comfort to those when their children, by the edict of a ruler, might be put to death!

25. This was the environ in which the entity first knew the longings of the mothers, the fathers of that experience; and yet there gradually grew, but all too seldom, that awakening within the entity - through the telling of the mysteries of the experiences of Zachariah, of Joseph and Mary, of the return from Egypt, of the things that had been a part of man’s experience.

26. Later the entity became the companion of those close to the Master in His walks in the earth; and there grew the realization within the entity, or the knowledge of how, of what manner His teaching was to be, - not ritualistic, not pertaining to that which had only been as part of ritual; but just being kind, just meeting the needs of the individual day by day, as to bring hope and a cheer and joy, even under hardships. For, He will bear thee up, if ye hold to that faith in Him.

27. Thus - as Elenor - the entity brought hope and help and cheer - as those days of persecution began - to the holy women, to Mary the Mother, to ALL of those about the entity, - even to those who were rather of the aged who had prophesied, who had kept clear and clean the activities of those who were set aside as the channels through which the activity might come.

28. Thus the entity knew the old and the new concepts of “the day of the Lord is at hand.”

29. And TODAY, in the words and the needs of the day, the entity may arouse in the hearts and minds of the many that understanding, the comprehension of “The day of the lord is at hand!”

30. Before that the entity was in the Persian land TO which the peoples of the Promised Land had been banished, but during those periods when there was the arousing of the kings, of those in authority, to give freedom to the peoples of the various faiths under the dictates of their own beliefs and tenets.

31. There the entity was a companion to the first of the kings, under those giving the dispensation to such.

32. Thus the cry which has ever been been, that is innate within the experience of the entity, for FREEDOM of speech, FREEDOM to worship according to the dictates of the own consciousness - each in his own sphere of activity giving allegiance to the one hope in the ONENESS of man’s faith in God!

33. The name then was Vastien. In the present the influences from that sojourn oft bring disturbances, because of the promptings of those who are teachers here or there. Thus there are the needs that the entity hold to that embracing influence as found in Him alone, - “Abide in me, and I in thee; thus may the glory of God be made manifest in the earth!”

34. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land, during those experiences when there were the regenerations being wrought by the activities which had been set in motion by the reestablishing of the Priest, the coordinating of the tenets and teachings of the Atlanteans, as well as the comparative activities from Said and On and Og, that were brought into the activities of the peoples of the land.

35. The entity then was among those who aided, who assisted those who would OF THEMSELVES purify their bodies in the Temple of Sacrifice and PREPARE themselves in body and mind in the Temple Beautiful for service in the activities to make known those awarenesses of the sons of the Law of One, - or God is one.

36. Would that all men might gain the concept as did the entity through that experience, to know the full meaning of “Know, O Man, the Lord thy God is ONE!”

37. Thus in the application of self in the present, let it be in that manner as ye ministered then - through the healing forces, through the varied manners and channels in which there might be eradicated from the bodies and the minds of the entities or beings, that which would hinder the allowing of the spirit of truth to manifest itself, to magnify itself, in the experiences materially of the individuals.

38. Then the entity was in the name Ky-Elon.

39. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, that to which it may attain, and how:

40. Who will tell the rose to blush, the rain to bring help and healing to the parched land?

41. Study rather to show thyself approved in all good consciousness to that ye choose as thy ideal. Let it rest, O Child of Promise, in Him - who is the way, the truth, the light, the savior of men! To all who will take His burden and learn of Him, He gives “Come unto me, and learn of me; for I am weak and lowly, but ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

42. Ready for questions.

43. (Q) What specific work should I be doing, and how am I preventing its discovery? (A) By a combination of conditions. But apply the self in those channels as has been indicated; here, there, everywhere. Let thy presence - in thy conversation, in thy activity - bring that healing as ye can to every soul ye meet! Not as in a confusion of tongues. Remember, as ye have once gained that perfect knowledge, “The Lord thy God is One!” He is not past finding out; neither are His hands short as men; but only thou may keep thyself from bringing to others that which is a part of thy own experience.

44. (Q) What is most pronounced and useful talent? (A) For the present, HEALING!

45. (Q) What is the purpose of my marriage to […], and how can it be used for our mutual development? (A) This might best be determined by the paralleling of the experiences of the entities in their sojourns through the earth. For these, - while they attract, they being disturbing forces; and the these may be unified - as in freedom of activity - in ways that may bring harmony.

46. (Q) What relationships existed in former lives between my brother […] and me? (A) In the experiences in Cornwall, he was healed by thee, - and thus close associations. In the Palestine experience and activities, he was a brother.

47. (Q) Why am I so close to my granddaughter […], and how can I help her? (A) By the expounding - yes, expounding - of the tenets of love as ye gained in those experiences through the Promised Land. Close - because the associations were as the mother in that experience.

Yes, the book came just before, I left to spend Christmas with my family. And since I’ve been back there has been such a lot of movement around me that I’ve not had time to read it thoroughly. The format is lovely - I’ll tell you more when I have really read it.

In spite of confusion in the external affairs there is a true peace in my mind - Your part in that was considerable

Dear Edgar Cayce -

On my trip out here last week I finally had the sort of quiet & leisure I’ve wanted to read Mr. Sugrue’s book about you. I can’t begin to tell you how much I like it - Will you congratulate Mr. Sugrue for me, please? It is saturated with love and appreciation for you, it seems to me, without in any way being mawkish or sentimental. There is pace & excitement & three-dimensional portraiture of all the main characters as well as some of the minor ones.

It was interesting too to see how he got across the quality in your effect upon people - not merely the effect of the readings - but of your own “natural” personality. Apparently I have not been the only one who has felt as if a hand had been laid in blessing on my head. And for you who want above everything to be helpful & to raise the general tone of living it must be very satisfying to know that you are & do.

Since my reading I’ve had one hurdle after another set before me - most of which I’ve shivered with now & then a click of the kind hooves on the top bars! But mostly it has been a straight away progress - thanks to great help I’ve had - not the least of which was the assurance the reading gave me.

Now, I am at a definite cross-roads. As I implied in my questions, I’ve always known that there is a special job I must do, and I have known that it had to do with service to the whole fabric of human thought & feeling. I’ve tried to do it in little - to those in my immediate circle, sometimes with success, they tell me, sometimes with a slap in the face to me, which wakes me wonder if I am mistaken - if my only job perhaps is to remember who I am & to get inner peace. Part of that I have, but I feel I won’t have it wholly until & unless I am actively working in outer affairs - This turning inward can be exhausting as you know

• who better? This doesn’t mean that I’ve not done all the outer things that present themselves. Those I do with a passion, for perfection in their doing. I’ve tried to be quiet, to listen, & goodness knows I’ve been patient.

What do you think of a check reading for me at this time? Probably what with the spiritual & physical acrobatics I’ve been put through since last May, I am dizzy & rather tired, in no condition to make vital decisions without help. If you think it wise and if you have time for it, will you find out what’s what? A collect telegram to me here for time & place - one to you confirming it will be fine. I plan to stay here about a month - A little information may be a determinate before I go back East where things are in a bit of a muddle. (I DIDN’T come out here as an escape! I prefer always to face things quickly.) I came out to see my precious brother who is in the Corps of Engineers - to have a good visit with him before he goes across. Telling you about my family affairs seems so perfectly natural - as if you might really care!

My dear Mr. Cayce

Both your letters reached me Friday - There seems to be a cross-current somehow. I don’t want to be superstitious but possibly I am supposed to work things out on my own. Whenever I get lazy things happen to prod me and then I know I must look inward for the answers, so far however there has been nothing I could consider a “lead” - lack of faith?

The specific thing I wanted to know would have helped me wake up my mind what to do right now, i.e. stay here or go back East. My ticket has been bought for the 26th and unless something climactic happens I’ll be on my way then. So a reading on May 4th would be too late for this venture. It is unfair for me to keep that time from someone else when I don’t really know where I’ll be. It is good to know that you are fairly occupied & are helping so many people.

I’ll try to find Mrs. Williams - I’m glad you liked my criticism of the book - With best wishes to you & to Mrs. Cayce, I am -

Dear Edgar Cayce:

It was a great disappointment to me that I could not have the reading in May. I didn’t know where I would be - as it happened I stayed in California until the middle of the month, but by the time I knew I should, it was too late.

The bulletin comes regularly - I must be owing somebody something, just how much I don’t know so I’m inclosing five dollars as an indication of my interest and gratitude. The conference sounds as if it had been heartening. Some day I hope to be there for one.

Conditions with me are in turmoil, indicating development certainly, but making me puzzles! Patience is the watchword, I know, but along with the outer seething is a state of mind and soul that is more like numbness than the agitation I usually feel when things are breaking up and moving. It isn’t even a “dry” period. Goodness knows what it is. Prayer is a work I used to know - it is like a echo now. I turned for guidance and got a direct leading in Ezra. “Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.”

Well, of course, the “city” we build every moment is founded on what our understanding is at that moment, and until something socks us we don’t know it is wrong since we use our best judgement and intentions in our building. Because of the apathy (not enough to make me not try to do something about it) there is the corresponding physical condition - low blood pressure. Something apparently keeps me whirling in the same place instead of the movement into greener pastures. I need a whack on my tangent! to set me rolling in a new direction.

You are busier than two bird dogs, I know, but will you have time to do a little work for me? These next few weeks will determine in a very special sense our future lives. We are at a cross-roads. Not between ourselves - that relationship has never been so harmonious - but in what we are going to do in the way of work. As you know I have always had intimations that I have a special job to do. That may mean merely that I must get an inner peace only, and then again it may mean that I must give out somewhere to someone what understanding I have gained from mistakes and terror and pain. You can see how disturbing it is to be at a point where I don’t know if I have learned anything!

“The River” is still in California going the rounds among friends…enthusiastic reports from them. Please remember me most cordially to Mrs. Cayce and to Miss Davis.

Thanks for your prompt response. May seems a long way off, but perhaps that is just an illusion! And of course there is always the possibility that you may have a cancellation before then.

At any rate enter me for the first vacant period you have, please. We can discuss what sort of reading it shall be when the time comes. I have re-read the one you made and felt as I felt at the time that some one had laid a hand on my head in blessing. It is too much to hope that all ghosts can be laid with one fell swoop - it would be perfection and then I wouldn’t be here anymore! - but it seems to take a long time for me to reach great understanding. We are the victims of our virtues just as much as of our vices, it seems. It is like a race. Will my tenacity of conviction hold on to good longer than to mistakes?

Dear Edgar Cayce:

Greetings to you, Mrs. Cayce and Miss Davis. I wish you all could have seen the glorious day “they” put on for us yesterday, Easter. All blue and gold with the air sparkling. Just at sunrise from the top of the hill on which this house faces the Bay, soared out the incredibly sweet notes of a trumpet - a sort of condensing of all wonder and magic. Some how people out here are childlike enough to express their hope and praise.

In December I came out here from murkly … to do a specific thing, something I felt imperative as a first step toward whatever my real job is to be. All is going well. Along with the work on the immediate job have have come floods of new understanding. In other words I am on the up and up!

Some time soon, I think, I have a date with you - just when I can’t recall. Will Miss Davis send along the date and hour, please, and what I shall send on in the way of a check I will formulate some questions too.

Dear Edgar Cayce:

The appointment for the reading at 3:30 - 4:30 EWT on August 2nd will be 12:30 here, I believe. I’ve waited to answer your letter until I knew just where I would be. All the atoms seem to be whirling about at a terrific pace, and while I try to keep “to center” as much as possible, I can’t avoid a certain amount of pull in various directions it seems.

But here I will be, and in the proper, prayful attitude. I wish you would decide what type of reading would be best for me at this time. How does the Mental and Spiritual differ from the Life readings? One would say that since we believe the former to affect - and effect - the others, that it might be the shortest path to knowledge.

The one question I want to ask may seem almost stupid, but is one I believe that most of us do not know: What do I truly want most deep in my heart, and how can I best attain it?

Since the reading may affect my immediate decisions, it would be most helpful to have it as soon as possible. I know what a mountain of work you people have to do so I don’t want to ask the impossible, but here are the circumstances:

I plan to go back to New York for a few weeks early in September to see the family. As things look now I expect to come back here for a year (which means being separated from them) to continue the work I am doing. This work has seemed to be one path I can take for more understanding and for a possible work of consequence. However I may be kidding myself, since it is something I have always wanted to do. I just don’t know.

In the flurry of packing for this trip & in trying to find a place to live when I return to S.F., I had no time for letters.

I’m indeed sorry to learn that you have been ill; the book must have loosed an avalanche of requests for readings, which you probably felt must be given. By this time I hope you are fully recovered.

At your suggestion, I went over my reading carefully. So much has happened since that was made that I felt some light might be thrown on the radical steps I have been taking. But you were right - an answer to my question has come through, not in my dogmatic sense but in a quiet assurance & am implicit of heart.

So I probably will not meed a reading in October - for which release you probably will be glad - And it seems probably that by the 17th be somewhere on the road motoring to California.

I shall be by the end of the month at … St., …, Pa. where you can send the refund for the checks I sent you.

Again I want to say that I hope you are fully recovered and NOT over working. All good wishes to you & Mrs. Cayce -

My dear Miss Davis:

This delay in answering your letter with its sad news has nothing to do with the very sincere sorrow I feel for the passing of Edgar Cayce, nor for the sympathy I have for Mrs. Cayce. She has probably been deluged with letters so I won’t write to her directly, just ask you to give her my love and what comfort it can give.

It seemed with the vast reading of There Is A River, Mr. Cayce would be overwhelmed with requests for readings and that he would tax his strength in trying to help everyone he could. The reading he did for me some years ago was a turning point for me - head in blessing just when I most needed tenderness. I will always be grateful to him.

Your courage in carrying on would please him, I know. With the war making inquiries into what and who we are more and more imperative his contribution to such questioning must be felt.

And thank you for the refund. I sincerely hope that your work will continue and that some day, somewhere we will meet again.
