This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 5th day of September, 1942, in accordance with request made the by the self - Miss [2448], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

1. HLC: You will have before you the entity [2448], present in this room. After considering her family, business relationships, and her spiritual, mental and physical well-being, you will advise specifically and definitely whether she should enter the Women’s Army, known as the WAACS, or the Woman’s Navy, known as the WAVES, or remain in Civilian life. You will give the entity constructive and progressive ideas and ways of thinking, giving good resolutions regarding approach to work, care of physical well-being and way of handling routine and duties, so that the resolves made at this time will be constructive and forward-looking and will utilize important planetary forces to their best advantage. You will answer the questions she submits, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the entity here, [2448]; the enquiring mind of the entity, those conditions and relations that exist, and the condition that exists, in relation to the needs of undertakings in the armed services.

3. As we find, when all are considered, - the physical well-being and the relationships, - if the entity will make the application in the Navy we would find - if the entity were accepted in its activities, in its examinations - the assignments there would be more in keeping with that as would be beneficial to the physical welfare, as well as those relationships that may be established.

4. To be sure, many things are to be taken into consideration. But that the entity even asks or seeks counsel or advice, in relationship to the existent conditions, indicates the needs for that association, that activity in which the entity may feel it is contributing of itself in such a manner, in the defense of an ideal and a purpose. And in that branch of service, if there is the acceptance (and it may be, for those of special activities), the outlines would be for the betterment for the body and its activities.

6. (Q) Which department or branch should I enter? (A) That of the regular service of the Women’s Auxiliary in the Navy - Waves.

7. (Q) If I should not enlist Sept. 11th and prepare to leave for school on Oct. 9th, when should I enlist? (A) If you are to enlist, the sooner the better.

8. (Q) Do I possess the qualifications spiritually, mentally and physically, to enter the WAVES as a candidate for officer’s training school? (A) The body does.

9. (Q) How shall I make my mother and family best understand that I want to go into the WAVES? What advice could I be given about telling my mother and family that I want to go into the WAVES? (A) As just indicated, by the seeking for advice or counsel it is seen that there are the needs for the self to offer self as a channel for aid, for an ideal, for a purpose for the homes themselves.

10. (Q) What advice about telling my family? (A) This will have to be directed by that which prompts self. Be true to thine own ideals and you will not be false to any.

11. (Q) Should I have correspondence sent home? (A) Do not try to hide any of the activities.

12. (Q) If my qualifications do not fit me as a candidate for officers training, what rating or rank should I try for when I enter the WAVES? What suggestions? (A) In the office help or work.

13. (Q) Considering my letter of application [See 2448-4, Par. R1] requesting consideration of me as a candidate for officers training school, a copy of which I hold in my hand, please advise if I should make any changes in it or leave it as it is? (A) Leave it as it is for the present.

14. (Q) Should I send this to Office of Naval Officer Procurement, Room 425, Post Office Bldg., Norfolk, Va.? (A) If that’s the regular channel, send it through that channel.

15. (Q) Are there any to be eliminated or added to the following references: Mr. Rupert Tumin, Gordon Campbell, Judge Fentriss, Miss Anna Johnston, Miss Sallie Corbell, Mr. Malbon, Mr. Munden, Justine Nusbaum, Mr. Edgar Trant, Lt. Kress. (A) These should be sufficient; not necessary for all, but these - we would not eliminate them.

16. (Q) In what section of the country is it best for me to serve? (A) In whatever department in which the entity finds it will be assigned to.

17. (Q) What about Alaska, California, Wisconsin? (A) It will not be any of these in the very near future. May be sent to Des Moines, but from there - if there is the desire for California - it may be assigned to that area, or it may be assigned to the east coast or southern coast if so desired.

18. (Q) Would you suggest any place that would be preferable? (A) If there would be a preference, to the California area.

19. (Q) If I am to enter the WAVES school of training in Oct., should I stay the month of Sept. in Va. Beach at the Arlington? (A) If that’s what is desired, very well.

20. (Q) What suggestions and precautions would be given for caring for my physical body while in the WAVES? (A) They will give you plenty of suggestions, and you’ll have to adhere to ‘em!

21. (Q) For caring for my spiritual body? (A) THAT you will make within yourself.

22. (Q) For my mental body? (A) That also you will make, by the application of the purposes and ideals.

23. (Q) What causes my gums to bleed? (A) We have the Army and the Navy, - we don’t have the gums in this!

24. (Q) What should I do for entertainment and a hobby this winter? (A) If you enter the services you’ll have plenty of entertainment and plenty of hobbies. You will form them in the environs in which the activities come.

25. (Q) I have had a proposal of marriage from [G…], who is a sailor and is now in Baltimore. Should I accept this proposal and marry him? (A) If you enter the service, DO NOT. If you don’t enter the service, ye may if ye choose.

26. (Q) How much money should I save of my income? (A) That is within self. But, as interpreted within self, make self self-sufficient, in the material needs. Do thy part and take care of that necessary for the general and specific needs.

27. (Q) Oct. 1st. will be anniversary for [T…] and me. At the present we have severed our relationships. Should I write and try to begin again, or is it best for both of us to let this matter drop? (A) You can’t have thy cake and eat it too! Ye asked about others. Which do you choose? These ye choose within yourself!

28. (Q) Any other suggestions for the entity at this time? (A) Keep the mental attitude and the spiritual purposes true to thine own conviction. Do not let others or circumstances cause thy change in these directions.

29. (Q) Please give a meditation or prayer for the entity. (A) FATHER, GOD! HEAR THOU THE PRAYER OF THINE HANDMAID. SHOW ME, O GOD, THE WAYS I SHOULD CHOOSE, IN MY RELATIONSHIPS TO THOSE ABOUT ME DAY BY DAY; MY FAMILY, MY FRIENDS, MY FOES. I WOULD DO THY BIDDINGS, O GOD! SHOW THOU ME THE WAY - AS THOU HAST PROMISED IN JESUS THE CHRIST.

R1. 9/5/42 [2448]‘s application for Officer Candidate School [See 2448-4, Par. 13-A]:

Office of Naval Officer Procurement, Room 425, Post Office Building, Norfolk, Va.

Gentlemen:-

I wish to be considered as a candidate for officer’s training school.

I am 26 years of age, single, with no dependants. I am a graduate of Maury High School, where I majored in Commercial Subjects such as Commercial Law, Filing, Typing, Bookkeeping, Commercial Math. I have extra credits for Math, History. I have had evening classes at the Kees Business College in Shorthand, also I attended college of William and Mary for Economics under Dr. Procer.

Since Pearl Harbor I have been doing nite work in Norfolk General and St. Vincent’s Hospitals as Staff Assistant in the Red Cross. While there I have learned to operate the PBX switchboard, as well as performing other office duties such as filing and typing, writing case histories, etc.

For the past eight years I have been and am now employed by the Wholesale concern of … as office manager in direct charge of administration and personnel, and am thoroughly familiar with all office routine, including pay rolls and all bank deposits, as well as the handling of individual office workers and salesmen.

I am at the present time employed at the yearly sum of $1,560.

I will be glad to furnish the best of references attesting to my ability and integrity.

R2. 9/28/42 She phoned for an urgent reading in regard to joining the Waves:

I am scheduled to go to Richmond tomorrow morning to take physical and mental tests for the Women’s Waves. After talking to my family, friends and employer, I have become materially afraid to enter, as they point out that I can make more and will be better off outside the Waves. And for that reason and others, such as discipline and living conditions I will undergo while in the Waves, I will become unhappy. After weighing and considering advice given, I have practically abandoned the idea of going to Richmond tomorrow to take the tests. One of the most important reasons for wanting to enter the Waves, however, was to afford me the opportunity for new employment, as I am working under bad conditions and am unhappy in my present employment. After telling my family this, my father suggests that I can get work at the naval base at a very good salary, but because I am conservative at heart (even though I have radical urges) I am afraid that after this war is over I will be without a job and not be able to get another paying as well as if I stayed where I am, even though I am unhappy and wish with all my heart that I could change from where I am. I am afraid to do anything. Please tell me what is best, considering my physical, mental and material and spiritual well-being.
