This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 15th day of July, 1941, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [2534], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Miss Eva Engel.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:00 to 11:25 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Missouri.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions that may be asked.
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2534].
-
As we find, there are disturbing conditions which prevent the better physical functionings in the organs of the body.
-
These in their inception have been of long standing. Gradually the hindrances have magnified themselves, through the changes which have from time to time occurred, until they begin to assume proportions that will necessarily require attention.
-
Many of these have reached such a state that they could easily be taken for causes. We find that these have had to do with the effects produced in the activity of organs that have gradually unbalanced the eliminating and assimilating forces of the body.
-
Then, these are the conditions as we find them with this body, [2534] we are speaking of, …, Missouri:
-
The blood supply - in its relation to eliminations; activities and flow through the liver, heart, lungs and kidneys - indicates a long standing hindrance in the manner in which the excretory functionings in the assimilating system have reacted with these organs and the blood stream.
-
We find that this is partially from an injury received in youth. As a contributory cause, this has affected the body from the nerve centers in the lower portion of the spinal system; namely, in the coccyx area.
-
Then, with a congestion from a cold - combined with some malaria - this subluxation produced a definite reaction upon the activity of the liver as related to the lower hepatic circulation; a subluxation of the activity of the gall duct area, and the flow of the pancrean fluids as combined with the excretions in the activity of the spleen itself; until this - the spleen - has become partially involved, as has also the liver, the kidneys, and naturally the circulation to heart AND lungs.
-
Naturally, these involve the glandular forces of the body.
-
This as we find is the basis of the disturbance.
-
The reaction caused from this in the present is a hindrance to the circulation to the lower extremities, as indicated in the swelling at times of feet or ankles, the rheumatic pains that become a part of the expression in the muscular forces of the extremities - from the lack of proper eliminations, from the uric acids and the tendency for an excess acidity throughout the system; a rash, or what might be called the hives or the like, about portions of the abdomen and the chest. All of these become, now, an expression, - or a warning to the body of a disturbance assuming greater proportions deeper within, which arises from all of these conditions which have been a gradual growth in the body itself.
-
From time to time there are minor conditions or disturbances, when there is an upsetting of the digestive forces, when there are poor eliminations, when the activities of various properties - some minerals, some vegetables - become contributory to the minor reactions needing correction. While some of these may be partially met at times, we find that the basic conditions still exist.
-
In the nerve forces of the body we find that pressures upon the superficial circulation bring about disturbing forces. While these are only reflex, we find that the causes are deep-seated - as indicated, and have been long existent; hindering the nerve forces from carrying impulses through the nerve centers and ganglia, and hindering that activity as related to the assimilating system.
-
Hence some of the conditions are constitutional, - in that there is the lack of the ability for assimilation, the lack of the proper weight or balance being kept in system.
-
All of these have been a part of the disturbances through this body, as we find.
-
As to the organs themselves, - we find that there are involvements in a functional manner, and the organs are becoming more and more involved in their ability to create the proper influence in the body. Hence unless these are attended to now, we will soon find that they will assume disturbances of greater proportions so that it will become necessary to consider the effects, rather than sources, in making the applications for relief.
-
But as we find, with consistency and persistency, with all of these conditions taken into consideration, we may in a few months bring about the much better, the much nearer to normal conditions through this body.
-
Then, in making helpful applications for the body, - these are the do’s and the don’ts:
-
DO NOT take fried foods in the diet.
-
DO NOT take large quantities of fats of ANY kind. However, DO NOT leave butter out of the diet, nor milk when these begin to agree with the body. Use all butterfats, then, - in the milk as well as in butter. Hence most of the vegetables should be seasoned with this, rather than with meat or hog fats or other forms of fats, - unless vegetable oils are used, which may be combined with some of the foods in their preparation.
-
DO:
-
Begin first to use for an hour each day the hot Castor Oil Packs, over the liver and the caecum area on the right side - directly to the skin, you see, from the lower area of the rib extending to the groin. Use three to four thicknesses of heavy flannel, preferably old flannel rather than new. Dip the flannel in the oil and wring out lightly. Apply warm, not hot but warm. Then apply an electric pad to keep this warm, sufficiently hot as not to be harmful. Let this remain on for one hour. Then sponge off with a little soda water. Repeat the whole procedure each day for five days.
-
On the evening of the fifth day, take internally two tablespoonsful of Olive Oil.
-
Then rest from the applications two days.
-
Repeat the Packs then for an hour each day for three days.
-
On the evening of the third day take internally two tablespoonsful of Olive Oil.
-
Then rest from the applications three days.
-
Then repeat the Packs for three days.
-
THEN, after the three days, early on the fourth day begin with taking internally small doses of Fletcher’s Castoria (not taking the Olive Oil this time, you see). Take half a teaspoonful every half hour until there is a full flushing of the system, even though it requires a whole bottle or more. This is to be taken in small doses so as to be absorbed, as well as to cause eliminations.
-
When this has begun to act WELL, then take two heaping teaspoonsful of Sal Hepatica in a glass of water.
-
Rest from the applications then about three days.
-
THEN begin (not before) with osteopathic adjustments; these with special reference to the condition existent in the coccyx, the lumbar axis, the 9th dorsal, and - to be sure throughout the vegetative nerve system, - or, the upper dorsal and through the cervical. But make the corrections first in coccyx AND lumbar area, and COORDINATE the upper dorsal and cervical WITH the corrections made.
-
Have at least two of these osteopathic corrections each week until eighteen such adjustments have been made.
-
If there are the tendencies for the bad taste, by the stirring up of the system, take a good eliminant - or a laxative; but if these treatments are properly administered, the system should be kept clean - with those cleansings as created first, by the other applications which will have been made.
-
Give colonic irrigations also during the period of the osteopathic adjustments.
-
Eat plenty of foods of all natures that carry the vitamins of the B complex, as well as A and D. These should best be taken in the foods, though - after the osteopathic adjustments are begun - we would begin taking two ADIRON tablets with the heavier meal of the day. Whether the heavier meal is at noon or in the evening, take the Adiron with that meal, - but do not begin this until the osteopathic treatments are started.
-
Do these, and then in eight weeks we would give further instructions.
-
Ready for questions.
-
We are through for the present.

R1. 7/18/41 [2534]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I received your Psychic Reading and have studied it with considerable interest.
Very much to the point is your statement that much of my trouble may originate in the coccyx area. Not that I recall any injury in youth, such as you mention, but I have been having trouble there for some years. I frequently get nerve pains right back of the rectum, quite sharp, which last for 10 to 20 minutes and then leave so completely as if nothing happened. Sometimes these occur at night, waking me from my sleep. In addition, I have had trouble with hemorrhoids for many years. When I take ‘shots’ for them they are gone for a while only to return after some months. So your statement on the coccyx is quite accurate, but so far as it affects my general health, this, of course, I could not know.
Another condition that seems to bear you out is a feeling of fullness just below my right ribs, toward the front. Undoubtedly, this is a congestion. I have had this for some years. I also have a dilated caecum. Other conditions are a sallow complexion, some bladder irritation and an under-active thyroid. I am told this is unusual in a thin person. So, it would appear, the constitutional disturbances you mention have substance in my symptoms.
I find much encouragement in your confident statement that it is possible by the application of your suggestions, to produce substantial improvement in my health, and it goes without saying, that I will carry them out fully. The one thing that makes me wonder is how castor oil packs applied to the abdomen can actually affect deep seated organs and cause chronic disturbances in them to respond and right themselves. Notwithstanding my quizzical attitude, I’ll [I] shall be glad to co-operate completely with you and trust to be rewarded with successful results in due time. As suggested, will get a Check Physical Reading in eight weeks.
Sincerely yours, [2534]
R2. 8/26/41 [2534]‘s letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
It is about six weeks now since I began carrying out your instructions of July 15th, and I wish to report my progress to date.
I suppose I am accomplishing some good because there is benefit in three ways. First, for the past several colonics, more or less impacted material was passed. Second, I also passed considerable bile, but this followed some olive oil which Dr. Hirst recommended I take a few times. And, finally, the third indication of progress comes from two urinalyses which I had made; one, three weeks ago, and the other, a week ago. In the first report a great amount of uric acid was shown to be present. The laboratory reported ‘Heavy (Whetstone formation)’. In the second report, this was down to a ‘Few’. Also, the acid reaction was first 90% and later, 53%.
On the other hand, the hives more or less persist, with fullness in the caecum and swelling about the right ankle. I understand, of course, that I have no right to expect a correction in these conditions without elapse of sufficient time, and I am certainly grateful for the progress so far, but the only thing that causes persistent worry is the ankle. While the area on all sides of the ankle tends to become a little puffy by bedtime, in the morning this is all gone except in one place, just back of the ankle bone, on the inside. It seems that the muscle itself is swollen, as if I had sprained it. However, there is no pain there or elsewhere about the ankle.
Dr. J. L. Hirst, whose card I enclose, seems to be a capable man. He is giving me two osteopathic treatments and three colonics each week. So far, I have had 7 of the former and 10 of the latter.
I am also enclosing Application for Physical Recheck Reading together with remittance of $10.00. While you suggested getting this in 8 weeks, I would not object to having it sooner as I am anxious to know if progress can be verified by observation through your talents. Also, I would like a fuller explanation of the condition about the ankle. Any day can be arranged for my staying at home. On Saturdays and Sundays, however, this would be difficult.
Awaiting your early advice, I am
Very truly yours, [2534]

R3. 9/2/41 [2534]‘s letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Your letter of August 29th was just received today, yesterday being a holiday and no mail delivery. I am replying to it immediately and sending it air mail special delivery, so that you should get it in time to confirm the appointment set for the 4th. This is satisfactory, and I will arrange to be at my home, …, Mo. between the hours you specify, which is 2 hours earlier than ours.
I talked to Dr. Hirst about questions and the following just about covers everything.
- The condition in the area of the coccyx. Dr. Hirst wishes to know if there is any infection in the rectum. There is some inflammation just above the anus, on the right side of the coccyx, and he suspects the possibility of a blind fistula.
- The present condition of the liver, gall bladder and caecum.
- The condition of the lymphatic system.
- The cause of the ankle swelling (right foot).
- What type of foods or articles of food that seem to be persistently causing the hives; whether milk or other protein can be described as being primarily responsible.
- Should all previously suggested treatments be con’t, or what change is advised?
Anticipating your early advice, and trusting you can be helpful with suggestions, I am
Cordially yours, [2534]
P.S. If you reply Special Delivery, will get letter from you Saturday.

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Assn. For Research and Enlightenment, Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Among the several booklets received today is one which impressed me greatly; the case studies of epilepsy. Your diagnosis is most unique, the treatments recommended astonishingly simple and the results unbelievable. Inasmuch as I subscribe to occult doctrines, your claims to psychic power are no challenge to my credulity.
Inasmuch as my physical problems are receiving more attention of late (am 49), I am wondering whether you can be of help in arriving at a true diagnosis and offer suggestions for a proper treatment. I don’t know whether it is malnutrition, rheumatism, nerves or what, but I am considerably under weight; have been for many years. I find myself unable to build it up by any means, diets and vitamins included. There seems to be no specific cause that I can find, unless it is some obscure focal infection, but of late I have developed food allergies and have eliminated many articles of the diet which I found productive of hives. Now whether such a condition as mine offers possibilities for help through your ability, you would know from your experience. I would therefore appreciate your enlightening me.
Very truly yours, [2534]
B2. 6/18/41 [2534]‘s letter to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Ass’n for Research & Enlightenment, Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I enclose Application for Associate Membership in the Assn., also check for $20.00. I would like a psychic reading of my physical condition. Any suggestions you can offer toward improving it will be gladly followed.
While I have generally described my conditions in my letter of the 11th, I would emphasize at this writing the fact that the hives I am troubled with is my most disturbing symptom. Other symptoms seem to be of a rheumatic type, nerve pains in muscles. Only a highly restricted diet seems able to keep these symptoms down to a minimum, and when I take liberties they flare up. If there are causes behind these symptoms, their discovery should point the way to a solution of the difficulties.
Will it be necessary for me to co-operate with you in any way? If it is advisable for me to relax at any specified time, shall arrange to do so upon your advice.
Sincerely trusting you can give me advice of material importance, I remain
Very truly yours, [2534]
B3. 7/1/41 [2534]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
In writing you yesterday, I overlooked advising you of a new symptom which developed since my first letter describing my condition.
My right ankle swells during the day and by nightfall it is rather puffy. Overnight, however, it practically disappears. This may be due to a weakening of the circulation in the leg, but thought I would mention the condition to you to be included in your observations. There is no pain, and as far as I can remember, do not believe I strained myself.
Very truly yours, [2534]
