This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at Phillips Hotel, Room 115, in Dayton, Ohio, this 31st day of December, 1923, in accordance with request made by Edgar Cayce.

1. (Q) LS: You will give the best name for this book. [[3744] collection]. (A) EC: Psychic Phenomena Through the Subliminal.

2. (Q) You will give suggestions for improvement or changes advisable for the text matter of this publication. (A) We have text matter for the publication that is not of the readings, or of psychic phenomena. In this we have nothing to do. This as we have very good as we would give from this, for it has been given from this plane. It may be or may not be enlarged upon as it stands.

3. (Q) Give the exact text matter that should appear on the title page of this book. (A) We haven’t that here.

There are many corrections to be made in this before would be published you see in book form in data as gathered here; phraseology, punctuation, and some words mis-spelled.

4. (Q) You will give the names of three individuals who might be associated with The Cayce Institute of Psychic Research for the purpose of giving psychic readings for Physical, Mental and Spiritual diagnoses and readings of a similar nature, as have been given by Edgar Cayce in the psychic state. (A) Edwin Roth (?), Linden Makaja (?) [GD’s note: Someone suggests Gurdjieff of Lenianakan, Russia (?)], Ross Weaver (?). [Steno questions spelling.]

5. (Q) In order to develop the Cayce Institute it might be necessary from time to time to have additional psychic readers. How should the governing board of the Institute proceed to get in touch with such people as may be required? (A) The developing of psychic forces in the individuals as contact the forces as radiated by the work contemplated to be done by the research work will develop those now being brought in the earth and physical plane, for relativity of forces bring all force, gravitation of those elements necessary to perpetuate any given force of the up-lift or building nature. Be not afraid, for the developing of many will be the guiding force in hundreds that will give assistance to the people. It will be developed then in the work itself. Choose those.

R1. 6/4/49 Letter from [3549]: ”…About two months ago I purchased a jar of honey in Macy’s Department store - on its label was printed ‘Weaver’s Apiaries, Navosota, Texas.’ The name Weaver (no initials on jar) rang a bell - so I wrote to Weaver’s and asked if they knew a Ross Weaver. Mr. Weaver answered very promptly and courteously and said no, he knew no one by that name, and this is his signature as he signed it (I have the letter if you want to see it) thus: ‘Roy S. Weaver.’ If you say ‘Roy S.’ aloud it sounds like Ross. Well, this gave me quite a thrill, so I sent the gentleman a copy of TIR and asked him to read it - a month passed and he didn’t answer - so I wrote again explaining about EC giving that name in one of his readings as pertaining to an individual with psychic ability. Now more than a month has passed again, still no answer. Now perhaps he has written to you or Hugh Lynn. Please let me know if you hear from him…”

R2. 9/12/49 Report from [3594] indicated THE Mr. Weaver she corresponded with had finally reported he had read TIR and didn’t believe a word of it.

R3. 4/9/56 GD’s note: We never did know any of; the three people referred to, nor have we come across anyone else who did.

R4. 7/6/73 GD’s note: Tonight I appeared on a panel with Drs. Gladys and Bill McGarey at Furrs Cafeteria, 3030 E. Thomas Rd., Phoenix, Arizona. During the question and answer period which followed, I was asked the usual question: “Did any reading ever mention anyone else who would be able to carry on Edgar Cayce’s work?” As so many times before, I referred to reading 254-4, Par. 5-A which indicated that there were those even then who were being born who would be able to help in carrying on the work. Then, all of a sudden, I KNEW and spoke with great conviction: “And YOU - you A.R.E. people here, and all over the country in groups like this, who are living what Edgar Cayce taught - are those who are carrying on ‘the work’.” (There was applause, indicating a recognition of the truth of this statement.)

R5. 7/31/73 GD’s note: Again in Dallas, Texas on 7/7/73, and in Virginia Beach, Va. on 7/17/73, I answered thusly a similar question from the audience and received similar response. From now on, when anyone asks me about other psychics to carry on Edgar Cayce’s work, I will give this answer.

R6. 8/31/73 Memo to GD from HLC: “I have just read your comment on “those who are carrying on the work” in connection with the statement on the panel with Bill and Gladys and again in Dallas. I think it is an excellent answer.”

R7. 7/77 GD made this xerographic copy from the book INDEX TO OCCULT SCIENCES, Doubleday & Co., Inc., Garden City, N.Y.; 1977. See 254-4, Par. 4-A, in re three psychics “of a similar nature”. At that time none of us had ever heard of Gurdjieff. [1/20/83 GD’s note: About a year or two ago, in discussing in a group the 254-4, Par 4-A in re the three psychics who might be associated with The Cayce Institute of Psychic Research, Hugh Lynn stated to me very definitely, in front of the whole group, that the second person mentioned did NOT refer to Gurdjieff.]:

“GURDJIEFF, GEORGEI IVANOVITCH (about 1872-1949)

Russian mystic and founder of the Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man. Gurdjieff was born of Greek parents in Alexandropol (now Leninakan) in the Causasus. In his youth he traveled widely, visiting Asia, Africa, and Europe, in search of spiritual truth. During his travels he studied the techniques of yoga and met dervishes and fakirs. He returned to Russia and in 1917 founded the Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man in the Caucasus, where he taught his theories. Gurdjieff’s elaborate system of philosophy and psychological development was known to his pupils as “The Work.” His basic idea was that people are usually asleep, little more than machines, but that with discipline and “super-effort” they can gain control of the enormous reserves of energy that exist in all humans, but which are normally tapped only in moments of crisis. Gurdjieff’s admirers believed that he had psychic powers, and that he was able to revitalize his followers by telepathic communication of energy. During the Russian Revolution he led expeditions through dangerous countryside in which they had to make the “super-effort” that Gurdjieff believed gave people great power. Political conditions in the Soviet Union forced Gurdjieff and his followers to move to Constantinople, where they continued their work. In 1922 Gurdjieff set up his Institute at Prieure des Basses Loges, a chateau in Fountainbleau near Paris. There his disciples lived spartan lives, did ceaseless manual work, and gained physical and mental control of themselves by practicing Gurdjieff’s “dervish dances,” among other exercises. Gurdjieff’s pupils were bound to secrecy, and nothing was published about his work until after his death. Then, two of his books, ALL AND EVERYTHING and MEETINGS WITH REMARKABLE MEN, as well as writings by his followers, achieved a wide circulation.
