This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at Phillips Hotel, Room 115, Dayton, Ohio, this 8th day of May, 1924, in accordance with request made by Mr. Edgar Cayce himself.

1. LS: It has been given in a reading that when Mr. Cayce was ready to establish the Institute the forces would direct as to how this should be done. The forces have been asked before to give the best location for this Institute. Will they tell us now, under the present conditions and circumstances, where would be the best place to locate, and how to go about to establish such a place? What would be the first thing to do?

2. EC: As has been given, the better place to establish such an Institute would be near large bodies of water, preferably on the East coast at or near Virginia Beach, Va. As to how to establish such a place, as has been given, the work, the phenomena, the help, the assistance, the development, the force of development, the richness of the subject matter to be investigated through such an Institute, only needs be presented to such peoples as are, have been and may be interested in the development of mankind from this viewpoint, to obtain that necessary for the establishment of such an Institute. As to the first thing to be done, interest those first who have directly received, direct or indirect benefits from work already performed. Do that. Be not faint hearted, using discretion and retaining ever the principles of service to fellow man.

R1. GD’s note: We have no record of earlier mentioning of Virginia Beach as a place for the work, though EC told us that the place was recommended in some of the earliest readings - of which no copies were kept.

EC told us that Gertrude’s uncle and wife, Mr. & Mrs. Hiram P. Salter, had gone on a vacation to Virginia Beach in 1915 and had reported that it was just a tiny fishing village; Mr. Salter could not understand why the readings insisted that the Edgar Cayce work should be established in or near Virginia Beach.

R3. 6/24 GD’s background recapped later for the manuscript PSYCHIC PHENOMENA THROUGH THE SUBLIMINAL, contained under 3744-1, 3744-2, 3744-3, 3744-4 and 3744-5, in answer to metaphysical questions dealing with things of the mind, the soul, life after death, etc. Linden Shroyer was the Conductor and Bertha Rosenberg was the steno. for the first two and GD for the last two. The readings were obtained 10/8/23, 3:00 P.M., 10/9/23, 11:00 A.M.; 11/24/23, 3:30 P.M., and 2/14/24, 3:00 P.M., at the Phillips Hotel, Dayton, Ohio, in accordance with request made by Messrs. [5717]; [294]; [953]; [4121]; and [5453] was the Conductor.

The questions and answers were kept in manuscript form and rearranged under topics, so that we later could not tell which questions were asked and answered in which readings. The [3744] series form the basis for all subsequent questioning through the readings along metaphysical lines, including the probing questions in the [900] series by Morton Blumenthal. It was only much later (during the 1960 through 1971 years) that GD numbered the questions and answers in order to index the material under the subject headings. For instance, Par. 43-A in 3744-5 was undoubtedly given in one of the 1923 dates rather than in the single 1924 date.
