This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 105th Street & Ocean, Virginia Beach, Va., this 17th day of September, 1931, in accordance with request made by her mother, Mrs. [2457].

1. EC: Yes, we have the body here - this we have had before. Many changes in the physical forces of the body since last we had same.

2. The condition as exists in the present may be termed a true attack of appendicitis, or inflammation in the caecum and appendicial area. However, the appendix itself shows less inflammation than that in the caecum and ascending colon. To be sure, this - were it to CONTINUE, or to cause temperature, and the nausea increase - operative measures WOULD be necessary.

3. In the PRESENT, as WE find, were those first of hot packs of Epsom Salts put over this area, and an enema of Russian Oil given, these would REDUCE the present existent condition, overcoming the nausea.

4. After the first two applications we would rest, and take internally those properties of a tea made of the ragweed, or ambrosia weed. Preferably gather same green, about two to three ounces of same - the leaves, NOT the flower. This we would (after being washed thoroughly, as would greens or salads) put in 16 ounces of distilled water and reduce to 1/2 the quantity. Strain, then add TO this 2 ounces of simple syrup with 2 ounces of grain alcohol. Then we would take half a teaspoonful about 4 times each day, until there is a thorough reaction of same through the system, which will be indicated by the CHARACTER of stool.

5. We would, throughout the period, be mindful that only those of liquid diet be given, and let the body rest DURING the period.

6. Should temperature arise, necessary that operative measures be resorted to.

7. Ready for questions.

8. (Q) How much of the Russian Oil should be used for the enema? (A) At least a pint.

9. (Q) How long should the packs of Epsom Salts be applied at a period? (A) About thirty minutes, then rest ten to twenty minutes and apply the second - see?

R1. 9/17/31 Mother’s Night Letter:

“[259] better tonight. Wire received. Thanks. Instructions fully carried out. No nausea since five P.M. No fever. Appetite coming. Write tonight.”

R2. 9/17/31 Mother [2457]‘s letter: “Such a day, such a day, starting at 1:30 this morning, when I heard [259] up. Called to her, she ans’d, but I could not go back to sleep. I treated her back last night and again during the night. The friction of Ben Gay kept the pain down. An hour or so later the nausea started and lasted until 5:00 A.M. She had a rigor or chill from the pain. A hot bath brought her around and she went to sleep until after seven. Hated to pull you out of bed at the unearthly hour I did, but I knew you could help and if possible would. Your voice sounded good to me - first time in two whole years.

“The wire reached me about 12:50 P.M. Proceeded to put it into execution at once. Had the Epsom Salts on hand. Had to get the Russian Oil, Ragweed (green), etc. All is going fine at present.

“The Epsom Salts Packs relieved some of the soreness. The high oil enema had its effect, and she has had the first half teaspoon of the Ragweed compound. So, from present conditions, she is in store for a good night’s sleep.

“Will try to keep her quiet tomorrow and let her go back to school Monday. I really think it best to do so [to keep her home, I mean].

“This is not the first attack she has had, but the severest … I do thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

R3. 9/19/31 Mother wrote: “The rdg. [mailed] reached me around 7 this a.m…

“Carried out instructions to the best of my ability and the patient is up. When she feels good, she is too gay - have to ‘bean’ her to keep her quiet. Am adding some solid food today - light diet,.. will keep her quiet… You just don’t know how grateful we are to you… I wish you were nearer that I might talk things over with you [in re sister’s estate, etc.]. Somehow I can’t seem to put the confidence in anyone here, that I have in you and your judgement.”

R4. 9/21/31 Mother wrote: “[259] is very much better tonight. She must be a giraffe - so hard to fill up. Liquid is all right for a day or two, but she had to stretch it a day longer. Added extract of beef and rice today, then she was hungry sure enough, but I held out…very little soreness now. She ought to be able to go to school in the morning.”

R5. 10/1/31 Mother’s note: “[259] is fine, thanks to you.”

R6. 1/26/32 Mother wrote: “[259]‘s side is worrying her again, but I blame her for that, for she never kept up that ragweed compound…my being out of town, she got careless about the medicine. I have so much to live for and feel so rotten until I wonder at times ‘why for’”. [2457-5]

R7. 2/23/32 Mother [2457]‘s wire: “Marcus Skinner [M.D.] to operate on [259] tomorrow morning for appendicitis. Letter follows.”

R8. 3/12/32 Mother’s letter: “[259] is doing fine. Dr. James Alison [M.D.] made the last examination Thursday - said all was well - except for her to go slow.”

R9. 6/22/32 Mother’s letter: “I can’t understand why since [259]‘s appendix operation she has trouble - cramps - the first day of every menstrual period. Thought I’d call Dr. Marcus Skinner and find out the what and why of it. She was o.k. before being operated on.”

R10. 9/28/32 Mother [2457] wrote: “[259] came in from school with fever 101 3/5 and like ice - a dumb chill, I suppose. She is in bed - a purgative down her and now waiting for the quinine capsules to arrive - every four hours for three days, then three times a day according to conditions.”

R11. 10/4/32 EC’s letter to Mrs. [2457], the mother:

“Sorry to hear [259] is not feeling so well. From your description it would indicate malaria. I suppose the quinine will get rid of that. When she is rid of it, it might be well for you to make a tonic something like this for her:

“To 4 ounces of simple syrup, add:

Tincture of Valerian…1/2 ounce, Elixir Calisaya…1 ounce, 10% solution Bromide Potassium…40 minims, 10% solution Iodide Potassium…10 minims, Tincture of Capsici…5 minims.

The dose would be half a teaspoonful 3 times a day. She will find it quite bitter, I suspect, and she may make many awry faces, but it will tone up the system and keep the eliminations and functioning of the glands properly, especially if it has been necessary to take quinine to allay the strept that must be showing in the blood, from the temperature that has been indicated.”

R12. 12/12/32 Mother [2457] wrote: “[259] has been having some trouble with her throat. Took her to Dr. Samuel Kirk [M.D.]

the other day and he mopped it out good and told her she was eating too many sweets, to lay off.”

R13. 1/12/33 Mother wrote: “[259] is out of school - her brain versus body again… In a rdg. 4-5 years ago you said something to the effect that she would have trouble if she didn’t give her body time to catch up. Now the teachers are pushing like everything to get all the knowledge in their heads in case school does close… You see, [259] has been out quite a bit, with one ailment or another, and had about a week’s work to makeup. [259] says she had rather leave off now and start in with the new Junior grade and graduate next year. I don’t mind. She will be 17 in March, you know, and besides, what is education if health is lacking.”

R14. 1/23/33 She wrote: “Will be more than glad to have your help for [259].

“We always get such wonderful results from the Readings.”

R15. 1/30/33 Mother verified appointment, saying: “Ask about her teeth.”
