This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 17th day of April, 1933, in accordance with request made by his mother, Mrs. […], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Sarah Hesson, Leslie B. Cayce and Alfred D. Butler.]
Time of Reading 417 - 22nd St., 10:40 to 11:00 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. Va Beach, Va. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, [271]; this we have had before.
-
Now, as we find, the general conditions show improvement.
-
There are still those conditions wherein the mental changes come from those activities of recuperative forces in the physical functioning of the body, through which the mental forces become active; yet these - we find - are on the improve, with the suggestions that are made while the body is in the subconscious or unconscious state.
-
However, for these suggestions to be more effective, they should not be given in merely a singsong manner; nor said just once. But take at least the time to repeat same (the suggestion), POSITIVELY, three to five times; that there may be the full response in the POSITIVE forces of the suggestion to the mental activities of the body.
-
And we would, for the time being use, the same suggestion; or the same affirmation. And by affirmation we mean that it should BE an AFFIRMATION!
-
As to the general activities of the body, there should be those things, events, happenings, that will make the tendencies for the body-mind and body-consciousness to use the mental forces. Not only in reconstructing, in the mental abilities of the body, those conditions that have transpired in the past; but there should be such questions and such conversations as to require the answers to show CONSTRUCTIVE forces in the activity of the mental body or mind - see?
-
These should not be made tiring, nor so as to cause over-anxiety; but patience - patience and persistence on the part of those that give the suggestions, both in the subconscious (or during those periods when the body is in rest or repose) and in the waking state.
-
Make for constructive, CREATIVE activity; the necessity for the mind to put this and that construction on those things that are spoken of.
-
And let the conversation ever be of CREATIVE forces, LIFE - life’s activities! Not ANY that is of a DESTRUCTIVE nature, in ANY way or manner!
-
After the present week there should be those changes in the form of the vibration that is made for the body, in the use then - for a period of three weeks - of the Radio-Active Appliance. See?
-
And make those attachments to the body, cleansing the anodes and making them firm; but not BINDING so as to decrease the impulse of circulation, either in wrist or ankle. To the inside of the wrist, of course, first; where the pulsation is easily felt. On the inside or the ankle, above the ankle bone; where the pulsation is easily felt.
-
In regard to these vibrations, then, after the three week period, we would give those changes that become necessary.
-
In the matter of the physical activity, this should be that which makes the body PHYSICALLY tired of evenings. And early to retire, in most occasions, is better for the body.
-
And, as soon as the body awakes of mornings, it should be required to begin SOME sort of PHYSICAL activity; rather than the mental - which is that which will make for the introspection of self. Hence suggestions and a good deal of talk regarding what the activities of the day will be, should be the beginning of the day.
-
As to the matter of diet, it would be well for this to be kept in a manner such that it is seen and known that there is not the tendency for constipation in any manner.
-
It is preferable that the diet be an alkaline one, rather than acid. For, in an alkalin diet all constructive forces are enabled to work much better for the recuperation of physical as well as mental activities of the body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
It would be well that there be kept rather the close tab on ALL applications, if there would be kept the continued resuscitating forces for body.
-
Reactions may be expected, for these are natural; but keep constructive influences!
-
When matter for reading is desired, do not give the body reading matter other than that which is constructive. No gang land. No underworld. Not a great deal of animosity or excitement in the reading matter. See?
-
(Q) How much coffee each day is well for the body? (A) Depends upon what kind is taken and how well it is prepared! It doesn’t hurt! Coffee prepared properly is a food! Coffee old or stale, or overdone, is bad for ANYBODY! and this body as well as the rest!
-
(Q) His habit of putting handkerchief to mouth, is this caused by nausea or toothache? If nausea, what should be done to help the body? (A) Toothache. The gums should be looked after. Insist that there be used the antiseptics for the mouth, and the brushing of the teeth often.
-
(Q) Are movies occasionally well for the body? (A) Provided they do not carry that same element of reaction to the mental body as we have indicated. Those that present reactions of a constructive nature are well.
Remember, you are dealing with mental recuperative forces; and conditions act upon the MIND just as would be experienced in the development of a six to eight, to twelve year old child!
But the mind is being rebuilded! Give it the PROPER things to build upon! else there will be found that the reactions and tendencies will be towards those things destructive, or whatever is taken in the mind.
Speak, act, THINK constructively about the body! Some may consider it a hard job, but it’s worth it - and it’s worth it to themselves, because it’ll make ‘em live better, if they’ll do it!
-
(Q) Any further advice at this time? (A) Do this. This is a plenty! This is a mouthful! and the hands full, if they’ll do it! Until we give it again!
-
We are through with this reading.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 4/19/33 EC’s letter to [271]‘s mother: “My dear Mrs. […] We were all very much surprised and pleased when Mr. […] walked in Saturday. I was certainly very glad to see him again, and I hope that his report from here was satisfactory to you.
“Personally, Mrs. […], I am very much pleased with the information gotten on [271] in the last reading. I’m sure the indications are that there is definite improvement shown in his condition. Slow, yes ma’am - it is BOUND to be VERY slow, but I certainly believe that if you could have heard his discussion at our little meeting we have once a week, you would have been pleased and gratified at his reaction and the interest he has shown in all the activities from time to time.
“Of course, Mrs. […], I do not want to make the expense of [271]‘s stay more than is justifiable for his best interests. But I do believe, as I told you when you were here, that it would be well to check up on his condition through a reading at least once each week. I’m sure you understand just how we happened to go over the one time. I suppose Mr. Hesson told you that I was called to court to serve on a jury; consequently, was unable to fill any appointments. And it did not coincide with [271]‘s nor Mr. Hesson’s arrangements to have the reading on Tuesday. Then Wednesday morning we had the letter from you suggesting that it might be put off another week. If you feel that it is not necessary, why - of course - that’s the way we want to act. If you only want a reading once in two weeks or once a month, or however you want it, know that it is our purpose to try and be of a service.
“Hoping that it will not be a great while before you will have an opportunity to come down for a little visit with [271], to see for yourself just what is going on, and with all good wishes to you and yours, I am - ” Sincerely…
R2. 4/22/33 letter from [271]‘s mother: “Dear Friend, your letter to hand today, also the last reading for [271], which to my mind is quite encouraging. I have also great hopes of him coming back, but know that we must have patience, and it will take time; for the present would ask for a reading for him every two weeks. Have just sent a letter to the family and they will explain the reason…”
R3. 4/25/33 EC’s letter to [271]‘s mother: ”…We have yours with the enclosure, also your letter of the 22nd; and thank you very much for both.
“As you suggested, we did not take a reading yesterday for [271]. However, as it was the time for the change in the type or character of treatments, I felt it would have been well to have had the information to instruct Mr. Hesson, as well as the others. Of course, I do not want to do anything more than you desire, because the information can only be half a help unless we have the full cooperation of all those concerned in [271]‘s condition. But it may be sometimes necessary to go ahead with the reading, when we feel it is for his best interests. If you want to pay for the work, alright; if you don’t, it’s alright just the same. What we want is to be of help to your boy. I know that you, as well as the rest of the family, have been told so often by the profession that there is no help, and that he won’t ever come back, or can’t come back, or that if he does it will be a natural consequence of some forces that we know nothing of - or understand less of, and that whatever is being done or attempted is all to no account. But I do believe I am honest and sincere when I tell you that we have felt differently about this, and we believe we are JUSTIFIED in feeling different about it, from the experiences we have had through the years; else we would never have accepted him here to try and be of service to him. I believe his present surroundings are much more conducive to his happiness than ever could be in an institution. That is entirely outside of any good we may be able to do for him, in the way of overcoming his condition, etc. I know that in the last thirty-three years of experience with this Work, wherever there has been the wholehearted cooperation of everyone concerned, we have not found a single instance where a definite change for the better hasn’t been wrought as promised. I understand that quite often we are told that there is always an “IF and AND” in things of the kind, and that if individuals don’t get results we immediately say, “Well, they didn’t do all that was suggested.” Yes, it has been hard, in SO many instances, for us to get the cooperation of those applying the suggestions or treatments for various individuals, and various circumstances and conditions in the experience of individuals. Yet, as I have said to those who were responsible for bringing this Work to your attention, as well as to all those who are directly interested in seeing that every suggestion is followed out, we HAVE the opportunity here - provided we have YOUR wholehearted cooperation - to prove to ourselves that God still is in heaven and that He IS merciful to those who will seek to know His biddings. And though we may wander far away, His promise has been, “If ye turn again and seek me, I will not turn my face from you and WILL heal your affliction.” But we do need the cooperation, wholeheartedly, from you - and you - and you - and EVERYONE OF YOU - interested in doing something for [271]. Don’t put it all on us! You are responsible for him; it’s your job! We are willing to do our level best to help.
“Let us hear from you. We realize you are quite busy, and that the very purpose which has so long been first and foremost in your heart and mind to help those afflicted (proven by your activities), has now come home to you.
“All send our love, and I sincerely believe we will be the means (if we have the opportunity) of bringing a real service to your boy,” Sincerely…
R4. 4/27/33 Letter from [271]‘s mother: “Dear Friend, Your letter, of April 25th to hand. I don’t want you to believe that I haven’t full confidence in your work, and appreciate all that is being done for [271]. If at any time you think for his benefit a reading is necessary, don’t let my instruc- tions hold you back. I want to fully cooperate with you. I have great faith that he will be helped by you all…”
