This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Va. Beach, Va., this 1st day of July, 1942, in accordance with request made by the husband - Mr. […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Miss [873].

Time of Reading 3:40 to 4:00 P. M. Eastern War Time. New York City.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here.

3. As we find, there are conditions which prevent the better physical functionings throughout the body. These have specifically to do with the effect produced in the activity of organs of the sensory system, as related to the glandular forces and general health of the body.

4. Oft, where such conditions are manifested as indicated here, disturbances arise as related to the functioning of organs acted upon by the glandular forces, combined with the eliminating channels when any accentuated reaction is set up, when the eliminating forces are blocked in any manner. And the general conditions, so far as other organisms are concerned, may appear in a very good state, - while those upon which is fastened the effects of this non-coordination in the eliminating system become much disturbed.

5. This may happen from a physical condition or a psychopathic condition, or from a purely psychic condition, or a combination of these.

6. These become especially effective or active when such has to do or deals with the organs of the sensory forces. For, these are the reactions to the delicate organisms of the combination of influences between mind and body, spirit and mind, and the functionings purely of the sympathetic organisms of the body.

7. Here, as we find, there has been in some times back a deflection from a pressure in the cerebrospinal system, and a deflection in the activities of the eliminating forces of the body, especially as related to the adrenal glands and their effect upon the kidneys. And the effect upon the activity of the organs of the optic force itself produces a skim, or an engorgement, which - with its very self - produces the slowness of eliminations through the optic forces themselves.

8. This has been experienced in one of the eyes, particularly upon which there have been measures taken to remove the deflected forces - or the poisons, or accumulations of poisons not eliminated through their normal channels. But the trouble not being removed, these have returned with more violence in the reaction upon the other optic, - though not causing such excruciating pain save at times.

9. As we find, we would have the adjustments in the cerebrospinal system of those deflections and subluxations that exist in the areas of the 7th, 8th and 9th dorsal, in the upper portion of the 9th, and through the 1st and 2nd dorsals and through the cervical centers that reach directly to the optic forces.

10. These, as we find, would be done by such an one as Dobbins. We would first have at least two of such adjustments within at least two days of each other.

11. Also we would use those stimulating measures through hydrotherapy to produce coordinating activities in eliminations between the alimentary canal and the respiratory and perspiratory system, as to relieve these disturbances, or to bring back to the body more of health-giving forces and allowing the poisons that accumulate to be eliminated through their normal channels. Thus operative forces may be prevented, and there may be the prolonging or the making of better reactions to the vision itself.

12. We would have a series of three or four of such thorough hydrotherapy treatments, see? These we would have by such as Reilly. Use the Fume Bath first. Do not raise the temperature of the body too high. But within a Dry Heat Cabinet use the Fume Bath. For this body, we would have two the first week, - say one on Monday or Tuesday and the other on Friday or Saturday. We would use in the first a teaspoonful of Atomidine in the pint of boiling water, so that the fumes settle over the body. In the last, or the next Fume Bath, use two teaspoonsful of Witchhazel in the pint of boiling water for the fumes. Following the Fume Bath have a thorough rubdown, followed with the hot and cold needle shower, see? Then the rubdown with a combination of oils in these proportions:

Olive Oil…2 ounces, Peanut Oil…2 ounces, Lanolin, dissolved…1 dram.

13. Then follow this with the alcohol rub. Have four of these in two weeks.

14. Then begin again with the series of osteopathic adjustments, twice a week - until there is complete alignment through the cerebrospinal system. This should be accomplished in at least ten to twelve to fifteen such adjustments.

15. During the periods be very sure that there is at least once each day a raw, green vegetable as part of the diet; including especially grated carrots raw, with lettuce and celery, some beets, as well as mustard greens - if practical.

16. No hog meats at any time. Liver, tripe, pig knuckles, - these we would have in abundance; also fish or sea foods of all kinds. Little of beef. Of course, fowl may be taken in moderation.

17. Plenty of cooked vegetables, and keep more to those that grow above rather than those grown below the ground.

18. Do these and we should bring better forces for this body, and prevent the necessity for operative measures.

19. Ready for questions.

20. (Q) Is anything wrong with sinuses? (A) Nothing wrong that will not be corrected, if these other applications will be given. There’s something wrong, sure - these are deflected because they are a part of the pressures from the adrenals and the kidneys upon the poor coordination in the circulation.

Do these things, if we would bring better forces for this body.

21. We are through for the present.

R1. 7/9/42 Letter from husband: “I rec’d your reading and immediately got in touch with Dr. H. J. Reilly and Dr. Frank Dobbins. Unfortunately Dr. Dobbins is leaving to join the Army and cannot treat my wife. He recommended Dr. Coulter of 18 E. 41st. St., N.Y.C., also an osteopath… There are 2 things Dr. Dobbins wanted to call to your attention and wanted to clear up. First, that my wife has had a duodenal ulcer of long standing and has had no raw vegetables in her diet for years. Do you still want her to have them? Secondly, how many osteopathic treatments is she to take before she gets her first fume bath, or does she take the baths before starting the osteopathic treatments? We are extremely grateful to you for your reading and we are both sure that the treatments will affect a cure…”

R2. 7/11/42 EC’s letter: “I’d take 2 adjustments from Dr. Coulter - relaxing treatments rather than too severe or stimulating - and then begin the fume baths at Reilly’s. After some 3 to 4 weeks at Reilly’s I’d go back to the osteopath for a few more adjustments; then have a rest period of perhaps 3 weeks, and then another series at Reilly’s. Since she has not had raw food for so long, it might be well to go at this rather slowly, but I’d have a bit now and then, unless she finds that it disagrees with her too violently.”

R3. 8/4/42 Dr. Geo. N. Coulter’s letter to EC: “Mrs. [2774] returned to me yesterday to continue treatment as advised in her reading of 7/1/42. When she came to me 3 weeks ago I found an inflammatory and congested condition from the 7th thru the 9th dorsal vertebral region of her spine and in the cervical area, as you described in her reading. I treated this condition as you advised and she received relief after the first visit. She was treated 3 times that week and felt much better. The past 2 weeks she has been receiving the physiotherapy treatment (from Dr. Reilly) as advised. When she returned yesterday to me her improvement was astounding. Her pain has been greatly relieved and she, of course, acted like a different person. The pathology I found upon first examining this patient had improved and I look forward to much further improvement. I would like to make another report for you in a few weeks as to her condition, after she has received more treatment… It has been a pleasure to treat this case.

R4. 1/14/43 Dr. Coulter’s final report:

“I treated her twice a week for 3 weeks. My technical diagnosis was cervical neuritis; I did not examine her eyes. The patient obtained marked relief from her pain after the first treatment and continued to improve. She went on her vacation with her husband and failed to return for further treatment. She seemed to get great benefit from the treatment; in fact, the response was quicker than I expected.”

Dear Harold,

In response to your letter of September 25 the facts are these:

Prior to my visit to Virginia Beach during July, 1967, I had great difficulty with vision in my one good (left) eye. (My right eye has been essentially blind since birth.) The symptoms included “double-vision”, “halos” around point-sources of light, “floating blind spots”. I could not see sufficiently well to drive nor to read normally. Visits to various local ophthalmologists, the Retina Institute in Boston, and Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, diagnosed the difficulties as due to optical refractions resulting from “corrugations” or “roughness” of the surface of the cornea - cause unknown.

Anna, my wife, drove me to the Beach, where her reading of the Cayce files suggested that in several cases bearing a similarity to my symptoms, Cayce had recommended manipulations of the spine and/or massage, and had, in some instances referred specifically to you as the desirable therapist.

At the time I did not know you. I mentioned Anna’s findings to Lucille Kahn, who happened to be at the Beach that day, along with her husband David. She introduced me to him, who told me you were there for that evening only. He introduced me to you (and I suspect exercised some persuasion on you to “inspect” my back). You very kindly gave me a “treatment” and instructed the resident masseur with respect to a continuing type of “massage”, which I followed daily for the ensuing five days.

By the end of the third day I could see well enough to read normally. By the end of the fifth day I could drive. On the seventh day I drove home to Connecticut. Ophthalmological examination on my return confirmed “no apparent” corrugations or roughness of the cornea. I have had no recurrence of the symptoms mentioned above to this date (September 30, 1968).

The above are facts. Was it coincidence? Would the problems have disappeared themselves? Was the massage responsible for the change? There is no way of proving anything. The facts are however, as I have stated them.
