GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2780].
-
In giving the causes or the sources of the disturbances as we find with this body, it would be necessary to go back to those conditions which existed at the time of the body’s birth, - the manner of presentation and those conditions which have now produced something of a complex disturbance.
-
For, the pressures that existed from that experience, and the manner of presentation, produce now effects upon the physical - or in a pathological manner, and reflexly through the glands and the sympathetic nervous system, what may be called characteristic reactions; and a tendency for the body to build a sort of resistance or resentment within itself.
-
These, then, are the sources of the disturbances as we find with this body.
-
There are minor pressures, then, in the lumbar and sacral; yet with the developing of the body these have as a continuous pressure affected the digestive system itself.
-
Thus the inability for the body to retain or to eat normally through the periods even of this development.
-
Also it has naturally produced a form of lesion in and about those areas of the lower portion of the 9th and 10th dorsal. These deflections affect the pineal as well as the adrenals. Thus glandular conditions at times give a good deal of trouble to the body, as the body has developed in the throat, the neck, and portions of the body, as well as the conditions in the groin; pains through the limbs and feet, the affectations to the eyes.
-
All of these are outgrowths of the gentle pressures which have caused deflection in the stature development as well as complexities as combined in the mental reaction of the body to things and conditions about the body at times.
-
That there has not been a greater reaction to some of the organs is due not only to the normal development or growth, but those applications which have been made.
-
There are headaches at times, and a general “all over” feeling.
-
But keep the body away from sedatives as much as possible!
-
There will be required applications in series of osteopathic nature; and the osteopathic are preferable to chiropractic applications. Though these might be done chiropractically, we find that it would not be as effective.
-
These should be given twice to three times each week for the first series of some three to four weeks.
-
Then rest from these for a period of at least a month or six weeks. Then have another series of the same.
-
Do not change the glasses until there has been at least one of these series of the osteopathic adjustments.
-
The regular periods of exercise, the regular periods of the conversational reaction upon body development, and the periods of reaction, should be trainings by the mother, - as to the ways and developments of life itself.
-
These may be assisted also by the one who makes the osteopathic adjustments for the body, if it is a sympathetic one.
-
Appetite, general growth, headaches, eyes, glandular conditions, - all will respond.
-
During the second series of the osteopathic treatments (not in the first, but in the second series), make particular reference to the coccyx end of the spine.
-
These as we find, if there are at least three to four such series of the adjustments, should bring the body near to normal developments and normal reactions.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Any special directions for the first series of adjustments? (A) As indicated, - through the lumbar and sacral, up to at least the 9th dorsal; but coordinate, to be sure, the upper dorsal and cervicals with the adjustments. But begin with the adjustments in sacral and in lumbar, then coordinate - at the end of each treatment - with the upper dorsal and through the cervical.
-
(Q) What caused the depression in the chest? (A) This is from the drawings in the lumbar and sacral areas. These conditions should adjust themselves nominally, if the series are kept as indicated.
Naturally it will have to be a growth or development out of these depressions; that is, to the mind as well as the body relaxation, see?
The first two or three treatments may partially upset the body, but keep them up - be persistent with them.
- (Q) When body is nervously upset due to conditions arising from his failure to adjust himself to his companions, what would be suggested? (A) We should not have those conditions, if these adjustments are carried out as has been indicated.
DO NOT give sedatives - if at all possible to keep from same. And if these are given, give a mild sedative - as Aspirin, but do not give it without the Soda-Mint tablets with same.
-
(Q) When it is time to procure new glasses, would it be desirable to return to the same eye doctor to have the new ones fitted, or would a change be desirable? (A) We would suggest the same, for this will be a very good way to indicate the improvements that will have been made by the adjustments, see?
-
(Q) Are there any suggestions as to diet? (A) Get him to eat whatever you can, but keep plenty of Vitamin B; that is, not in concentrated form as in tablet or capsule, but in the foods, - that is, plenty of every sort of yellow food, including fruits as well as vegetables, and plenty of whole grain cereals whether cooked or dry.
-
(Q) Is nervous condition from pressures? (A) Just read what has been indicated. All of these arise, even the developments in the structural portion, as well as the complexities in the mental reaction, from the pressures indicated. And these cause the nervous conditions, to be sure.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 7/24/42 Mother [2602]‘s letter: “My son’s reading came over a week ago and he has already had four osteopathic treatments accompanied by a bandaging job on his heel which he cut very badly at the beach yesterday… The reading was very interesting tying up every bit of his trouble with his birth. Of course we knew he had suffered from these various things all his life, but couldn’t seem to get at any definite cause for any of it. We are anxiously watching for results from his treatments, realizing it will take time to show any definite response…”
R2. 8/16/42 Mother [2602]‘s letter: ”…In spite of the success so far with my own treatments, Dr. Rathbun is still somewhat in a quandary about the readings. When I asked him about [2780]‘s reading, he said, “Well, he hit the lesion right this time, the same as he did with you,” which is about as far as he would commit himself. However, he is following out the instructions in the reading carefully in spite of the still somewhat skeptical frame of mind he has about it all. He found definite lesions, he said, as mentioned. While I know it is too early to look for any marked improvement in the youngster, it does seem that he has made some advancement. He has started to gain a little weight, and his disposition seems definitely better. Best of all, he has adopted a very cooperative attitude, which I think augurs well for the success of the treatments. With a child their cooperation is half the battle. Being a child, and striking something entirely new of this nature, I had to explain the situation to him to some extent on the day of the reading, his insistent reaction being that “Oh, he’s a fake,” repeated through the next couple of days at frequent intervals. However when the reading arrived and I explained to him the main points of what it had to say about him, he made no comment except that he was nervous about going to the osteopath. His first treatment delighted him, and he would like to go every day if he could. Not long after we got the reading and some time after I had said some day I wanted to get his life reading so that we could find out how to plan his education, he asked one day, “Mother, when’s that true man going to tell me what I’m supposed to do?” So he, as usual, has gone from the one extreme to the other - so now you’ve graduated in his opinion from a ‘fake’ to a ‘true man’. Which is some help, anyway. Thought you might be interested in getting the reaction of a nine-year-old to the readings, after a personal application. He takes it for granted now that his chest is going to develop properly and that he’s going to put on weight and do all the other things we wanted and he does whatever we tell him is necessary to accomplish it. That may not seem very important to most people, but to us it is, for to say the least he has not been too cooperative in the past. In fact his mental attitude has been one of the hardest obstacles in the past to overcome in trying to do anything toward his physical development…”
R3. 11/12/42 Mother [2602]‘s letter: ”…I’m glad to report that we are coming along fine. My son is starting his third series of osteopathic treatment this Saturday and while he hasn’t gained any weight yet, he has improved so much in other ways… If his nervous condition, disposition, appetite, etc., continue to improve as thy have so far, I’ll ask for nothing more and be everlastingly grateful…”
R4. 12/29/42 Mother [2602]‘s letter: ”…Suppose [2454] told you how much better I am feeling and also what a wonderful improvement my boy has shown since his reading. He still has one course of osteopathic treatments to take to finish up his course of treatments. He is much nearer normal weight now than he has ever been since he was born and also acts more like an average normal boy than he ever has before. Honestly both my husband and myself have taken more real pleasure and enjoyment out of the scrapes he has been getting into and his coming in from football all battered up with a grin on his face, than we ever did before. He has always been so different from the average boy before and such a baby if he got hurt at all. He is anxiously awaiting for me to get his life reading to see if he is really supposed to go Annapolis and be a naval officer, which is his present ambition. However he’s always getting some grand new idea, so goodness knows what his next ambition will be…”
R5. 2/23/43 Mother [2602]‘s letter: “Since the osteopath feels that my son’s condition has reached a stage where only monthly visits should be made, I feel it would be advisable to have a check reading before going any further. While he has made marvelous improvement and has gained slightly over five pounds in weight, I should like to be sure on a few points…”
R6. 3/2/43 See 2780-2.
R7. 6/4/51 See Mother’s report under 2780-2 Reports, indicating the original condition was St. Vitus’ dance [chorea.]

B1. 7/2/42 Mother [2602]‘s letter: ”…I have found my own reading to be so helpful that I have hopes now of being able to do something with my son. Physically he has been such a problem all his life - nothing desperate but at the same time he has never been up to par… What is the reason for the nervous condition and what would be the best method of overcoming it? Would use of sedative when body is nervously upset due to conditions arising from his failure to adjust himself to his companions be recommended? What caused the lack of appetite which has existed from birth, and what can be done to build up a normal appetite? Why does this body have swollen glands persistently, and what treatment is indicated to overcome it? Are there any further suggestions which would help in building this body to a more normal condition and a better balanced system?”
