GC: You will answer the questions regarding this body as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2803]; this we have had before.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Please outline osteopathic treatments which Dr. Shellenberger in Baltimore could give to be of benefit to me in the future? (A) These should be rather light treatments in the main; that is, not attempting to make particular adjustments save as indicated by the position of segments; especially those in the coccyx and in the lower lumbar areas.
As indicated, the coccyx area will need some adjustments. Through the lumbar, through the whole dorsal area there needs to be not a stimulating but an allowing of those centers to become coordinant, through which coordination is kept between sympathetic and cerebrospinal nervous system. Thus it would be a gentle relaxing treatment, more massage than using the structural portions as leverage, though a thorough massage.
- (Q) How often would it be advisable to get an osteopathic treatment? (A) Have these about one a week at least until there is perfect coordination, especially in reflexes from those disturbances indicated in the coccyx area. A little later, when there is conception,* have these more often - until the body is adjusted in its proper relationships; keeping especially the organs of the pelvis in their correct relative
- [GD’s note: EC apparently foresaw conception to take place ten days later, for baby boy, [5398], was born 6/13/44.]
positions by stimulating activity in the lumbar-sacral and the lower dorsals - or 11th and 12th dorsal.
-
(Q) Should the Gold and Soda Solution be continued, if so, for how long? (A) This should be taken rather in periods. As there has been the lack of the reactions to the organs of the pelvis especially as related to the regenerative organs, this will be helpful to the body. But take it now only five days in succession out of each month. This should preferably come between the periods, not at the periods but five days in succession beginning about six to eight days after the ceasing of the flow.
-
(Q) How can I strengthen my back? (A) Haven’t we been trying to tell you how to do it here, by the movements made by the osteopath?
-
(Q) Give advice as to a form of exercise to keep my body functioning in the best manner. (A) For this body, after there have been three or four series of treatments - that is, three or four adjustments, when the body is correct in its position - take this exercise each evening: place the feet against the wall and the hands on the floor, rotating the body; as in a swinging motion not too much, but two or three times either way. It isn’t easy, it may indeed feel as if it is hurting the body at first, but if this is kept up, it will gradually strengthen and keep correct position of the organs. It would be well to do this also just before you go to have your treatments.
-
(Q) What has caused the terrific headaches beginning on the left side of my head and then giving the impression of a band tightening around my head causing me to feel faint? How may I overcome this situation? (A) Pressures in the coccyx areas.
-
(Q) Is this what is causing me to feel faint? (A) If you cut off the circulation, you certainly feel faint, and this is what has happened.
-
(Q) How may I rid my right foot and thumb of my left hand from a form of growth causing the area to be very sensitive? (A) Wash these occasionally in a solution of alum water. Take a piece of alum about the size of a partridge egg and rinse it in rather warm water, not hot but tepid, then rinse the hands in this allowing it to dry on them.
-
(Q) What has caused a weakness in my eyes? (A) Any pressure that comes from the coccyx area passes along the nerves and the supply of glandular forces affecting all of the sensory system. Here, the greater pressure is upon the adrenals and the 1st and 2nd dorsal and the 3rd cervical. Hence it would be well to relax these, as indicated; not try to move the segments, see?
-
(Q) Would it be advisable to start a family soon? (A) This would be very good.
-
(Q) What causes a restlessness within me which my home doesn’t fill, and through what channel could I divert it into a constructive purpose? (A) The spiritual self, the activities of the inner self, the urge to see things being done; and this would be one reason for having a family.
-
(Q) Should the Castor Oil Packs be continued and how often? (A) Whenever there is a feeling of a fullness through those areas, apply one - whether it is fifteen minutes or an hour - it will be helpful to the body.
Keep the mental attitudes ever on this order:
HERE AM I, LORD! I SEEK THY BIDDINGS. HELP ME TO CHOOSE TO DO AS THOU WOULD HAVE ME TO DO; EVER BEING A CHANNEL OF BLESSINGS TO OTHERS. MAY THE CHRIST-CONSCIOUSNESS BE EVER NEAR.
- We are through.

R1. 10/10/43 [2803]‘s letter to [1523]:
“As you can see, I started to write to you almost two weeks ago and once again will try to answer your delightful letter. It is an old story, [1523], so will make it very brief. Due to improper osteopathic treatments from Dr. Shellenberger, who didn’t follow the outline for such, I have had trouble with my back and legs. After four treatments, when I told him I would have to find someone who would follow the readings, last week I copied the outline of the treatment and found a young doctor, Dr. Emil Smith, graduate of Kirksville, Missouri of 1939, who gave me one of the best treatments, for almost an hour, following the outline in the minutest detail. He asked from whom I had taken treatments and also who gave me the outline, so I had to tell a ‘story’ saying I had my case described and a treatment prescribed by a doctor in Virginia Beach, and had Dr. Richardson treat me for five weeks before returning here; also told him of the unfortunate experience I had for four weeks and finally had to find an osteopath who would follow the outline. Well, when I went to get my first treatment from Dr. Smith, I was at the stage where I couldn’t stand up by myself and my back ached like fury. […] has been giving me daily rubs and I feel loads better today. Am going for another treatment in the morning…”
R2. 11/30/43 [2803]‘s letter to EC:
”[…] and I stopped in to see you several weeks ago and learned you were in New York. We hope you had a pleasant trip and we’re sorry to have missed seeing you.
“We do hope that you still have a date open about the 15th of December for a full physical check-up as you had recommended.
“Due to circumstances, my questions weren’t complete until this past week which I am enclosing. Also a money order covering the reading and also our contribution for the worthy cause the Association stands for. Wish it could be more!
“A few changes have taken place since we last saw you, mainly that I have found an osteopathic physician in Baltimore who is very interested in the readings and is very cooperative in following osteopathic suggestions given in readings. His name is Dr. Emil Smith, …, Baltimore, a young graduate, 1939, of the Kirksville School of Osteopathy.
“After taking osteopathic treatments from Dr. Shellenberger for the month of September, I found that after every treatment I felt worse and worse, until my condition was similar to how I felt when I first wrote to you for a reading. His treatment was so severe, with more bone cracking, than manipulating the spine, that after the sixth treatment, my body and spirit were sensitive to every movement of my body. I reminded Dr. Shellenberger that he was not following the reading and his treatment was too severe and his remark was that he didn’t need a reading to tell him how to treat a patient and that his treatment wasn’t severe and also if I didn’t like how he was treating me, I could find someone else. [1710] was so disgusted with his attitude that we both told him we would find someone who would follow the simple and full description of osteopathic treatments to be had as prescribed in the reading.
“Not knowing anyone else, I scoured the classified section of the telephone directory and after running over the few names of osteopathic physicians listed, I called Dr. Smith, who gave me an appointment and after reading a copy of the treatment, said he would do all in his power to make me well. I was feeling so sore physically, I was ever so thankful for his sincerity. My first treatment, which Dr. Smith said I sorely needed, took almost a full hour during which time his gentle massaging relaxed the muscles so that he could commence to remove the cause of my condition. Within a month he had relieved any backache I had and straightened the coccyx internally so that since then, I have felt like a new person. I have all my pep back, and feel wonderful for the first time since I have been married. He is now working on removing a lesion at the base of my neck which he said is hindering my eyesight. He is a godsend!
“Dr. Smith has read THERE IS A RIVER and is very interested in your ability in helping people and I recommend him as highly as Dr. Richardson for osteopathic physicians. He has cooperated fully in following the readings.
“I thought you would be interested to know that there is one osteopathic physician in Baltimore who may be of help to other members of the Association located here who need someone who is very understanding, and willing to do his all to heal, and follow your remarkable advice.
“I would appreciate it if you would wire me collect so that I will be home. We are indeed grateful to you for all the help you have given us and you are never forgotten in our best wishes to keep you well and give you strength to make others as happy as we are. Remember us to Mrs. Cayce, Gladys and other members of your family and anytime we can be of help to you, do not hesitate to call on us.
“Thanking you again, we hope to see you after the holidays…”

R4. 12/12/43 [2803]‘s letter to EC:
“We received your letter last week saying you were back and had a successful trip and were well and once again as busy as ever helping everyone out, just as you have been such an inspiration to us.
“It was good news indeed to learn that my appointment for a Physical Check is scheduled for December 15th in the afternoon. At that time, I will be at the … plant in Baltimore, … Highway, where I am doing temporary office work in the personnel department which I like very much, so I hope my reading may still be had. There are still a couple of questions I would like to add to the list I sent you, as follows:
- Are the glasses I have been wearing correct?
- If not, what type lense would be best, giving a prescription for proper glasses.
- How may I correct the condition of my eyes osteopathically, giving in detail the proper administration of treatments.
- How many treatments would be necessary?
“I do hope all my questions will be answered for so much depends on the answers.
“Mr. Cayce, you asked if I had gotten in touch with either Miss [3081] or her sister. I didn’t but shall if you could send her address to me, as I am sure Dr. Smith could clear up her condition as he has mine. I haven’t had a backache since he straightened the coccyx internally and feel full of pep and simply wonderful with the exception of my eyes weakening quite a bit, which I hope Dr. Smith will be able to clear up osteopathically, if proper movements were suggested in regards to relieving any pressure of the eye nerves.
“We can’t tell you how grateful we both are for the interest and the help you have given us both. May God bless you and take good care of you always. Give our ‘best’ to yours and remember us to to Gladys…”
