This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 5th day of February, 1941, in accordance with request by those present.

Time of Reading 3:30 to 3:40 P. M. Eastern Standard Time.

1. HLC: You will have before you the Glad Helpers Prayer Group, members of which are present in this room. You will consider their work and study on the endocrine system of the human body, and continue the discourse on this subject.

2. EC: Yes, we have the work of the Glad Helpers Prayer Group, members present in this room, and their study of the endocrine system as indicated through this channel.

3. As we find, with the information that has been given, now there should be rather those agreements - by the study of that given; and thus from same form the questions as MIGHT be expressed in “Is it false or is it true?” Else, the group may become burdened with knowledge and have little of wisdom - in making application of such knowledge as to become helpful or beneficial to them.

4. For, in their study and in the work of the prayer group, this must be a practical thing; that it may be used by them as individuals in aiding others to dismiss error from their consciousness, and in its place to put not merely the wishful thinking but activities of such a nature as to be helpful in same.

5. Let the approach be made by not other than the question, then, “Is it true or false?”

Modern research on the ductless glands has thrown considerable light on the causes of these phenomena. For a long time the ductless glands were a mystery to the physiologist. It is now known that they secrete substances called hormones or autacoids which are absorbed by the blood. These autacoids have remarkable effects on the organism. For instance, the autacoid secreted by the thyroid gland has been isolated and is known as thyroxin. It has been experimentally demonstrated that thyroxin has a profound influence on metabolism. If an animal is deprived of its supply of thyroxin through removal of the thyroid gland it shows a thickening and swelling of the skin, low body temperature and increased sugar tolerance. It becomes slow and sluggish and metabolism is diminished. In short it presents the typical picture of myxoedema. But if thyroxin is administered either hypodermically or by mouth these symptoms disappear.

It is now pretty generally admitted that the striking physical and mental changes at adolescence are due to the activity of an autacoid substance secreted by the cells of Leydig in the gonads, the so-called “interstitial” cells. The autacoid in question has never been isolated; but it is known that whenever the Leydig cells atrophy through destructive tumors, through the activity of X-rays or in cryptorchism the characteristic changes of adolescence fail to appear.

The other ductless glands also seem to play some part in this phenomenon. It is known that the thyroid has an influence; for in myxoedema spoken of above the individual does not develop characteristically at adolescence. The same is to be said of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Evidence in regard to the pineal gland is conflicting, but the weight of authority inclines to the view that this gland has also a positive influence. The same may be said of the cortex of the adrenal gland. There is some experimental evidence that the thymus has an opposite effect and that its removal tends to hasten adolescence. Others report removal of the thymus without any noticeable post-operative change. IT WILL BE SEEN THAT THE WHOLE SUBJECT OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE DUCTLESS GLANDS ON PERSONALITY IS AT PRESENT HOPELESSLY COMPLICATED; BUT RESEARCH WORKERS ARE CONSTANTLY BRINGING TO LIGHT NEW FACTS AND THE NEXT FEW YEARS WILL SEE MANY PUZZLING QUESTIONS ANSWERED.
