This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 6th day of October, 1942, in accordance with request made by the father - Dr. […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

In the Gibbons Hosp., Time of Reading East Fayette St., 11:10 to 11:20 A. M. Eastern War Time. Celina, Ohio.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes - these are very serious disturbances; a form of step, that - unless this is allayed - will attack the brain or nerve cord structure itself [prelude to meningitis?].

3. In the immediate (and unless something of this nature is done these will develop more serious conditions), we would apply over the abdomen the poultice of crushed grapes. Use the Concord grapes if possible; if not, then the other - any that may be obtained (preferably the dark grapes). Crush and use about an inch think between gauze, applying directly to the body and allowing to remain until the poultice is warm from the body heat - or from the high temperature (for the temperature is at present 103 and more). Then change, making another fresh poultice. Apply these continuously.

4. Do give an enema to relieve those strictures and distresses through the alimentary canal. Have the water body-temperature. Do not attempt to overdrain the system, but with the water body-temperature and using a salt and soda solution this will not be too draining. This will reduce the temperature and aid in relieving this distress.

5. Bathe the spine, from the base of head to the end of spine, with a twenty percent grain alcohol solution; not rub alcohol, but pure grain alcohol.

6. Most of the food taken should be the fresh grape juice (juice extracted from the same character of grapes as used for the poultice), and blanc mange or such. And beef juice a little bit later, if the body responds.

7. If there is improvement, - then we may give further instructions on Friday and Saturday.

8. Ready for questions.

R3. 10/24/42 Phone report by David E. Kahn: “Didn’t have a chance to follow out grape treatment, as he died on Thursday; took sick Sunday and died on Thurs., but the doctors were amazed that the Rdg. told what his temperature was at that time - said it was exactly correct for that period. They don’t believe now it was the polio either, don’t believe it had anything to do with the appendix either. They had already given him the Sulfa drug in some form, wasn’t the right thing for this particular case. He had been sort of paralyzed on right side for a month or so and they thought it was polio, but seems to have been some sort of strep, as Rdg. indicated.

R4. 7/16/69 Memo to Bob Clapp from GDT:

I just finished talking to you on the intercom about Dr. John J. Shea [M.D.], 3600 E. 3rd St., Dayton, Ohio 45403 [Phone: Area Code 513-256-5151].

He was recently installed as a Sponsoring Member, and wrote Dr. McGarey about a week ago that he would be glad to treat patients according to the readings. He is an allergist. He was going to spend his one day here looking into psoriasis, asthma, etc., etc. I let him have my file book of Dr. McGarey’s Commentaries for Doctors, and when you print some more be sure to replace my copy.

He came down to the office to report to me on Case [2826-1], a 12 yr. old bulbar polio case he was called in on at Gibbons Hospital in Celina, Ohio just a few days before the patient died [10/8/42]. The reading was absolutely correct as to temperature at the hour of the reading, and as to prognosis, etc., if the tr. was not followed. Although the reading’s advice was wired, the parents didn’t receive it - didn’t go home from the hospital - until the boy had died - late that same day. Dr. Shea doubts that they could have gotten the advice followed, but he thinks the reading’s diagnosis of strep was correct, since the symptoms would have been the same.

Dr. Shea and his wife are friends of [2826]‘s parents, and he thinks he can get permission to send us a photostat of the hospital record - if it is still intact after all these years. Also he will write up his experience with the case and send it to be included under his signature.

I tell all this detail so it can serve as a report in [2826]‘s file until we have the record from Dr. Shea’s office, also in order to send a copy to Dr. McGarey, etc., etc.

Dr. Shea says he is going to try to attend the Medical Conference in Phoenix next January. A very nice man!

Dear Mr. Cayce:

The twelve year old boy you referred to was [2826] of …, Ohio.

The Hospital record at Gibbons Hospital - Celina is incomplete, the enclosed record is the only one.

I talked to his Mother - […] and she gave me the following story.

“Little [2826]” - age 12 years - (as he was called) (His father - Dr. […], Sr., an Optometrist and business friend of Mr. Kahn) had been at camp and became homesick, so he came home Saturday. He had what his Mother thought was a cold. She took him to Charles P. Adkins, M.D. - Coldwater, Ohio their family Physician who thought he might have an inflamed Appendix. Tests were negative.

Saturday evening he felt better. Sunday morning didn’t feel “up to par” stayed in bed and asked for Chicken Noodle Soup and a Sandwich which he immediately vomited up.

His Mother called Dr. Adkins who advised Hospitalization in Gibbons Hospital, Celina, Ohio. He had earlier Sunday tried some clothes on but couldn’t remember that he had done so.

Monday he was worse. A Catholic Priest visiting him noticed a twitching of the boy’s body and gave him the last Sacraments as he considered him a very sick boy.

Doctors didn’t know for sure, what was causing the boy’s trouble. A tentative diagnosis of Bulbar Polio was made. The Mother said tests for Polio were negative.

Tuesday - October 6, 1942 he was sent by ambulance to Miami Valley Hospital - Dayton, Ohio under the care of Wallace B. Taggart, M.D. a Pediatrician, where he died the evening of October 8, 1942. Dr. Taggart told his Mother that if he survived the crisis which he expected to be in the afternoon of the 8th., he would probably get well, at 6 P.M. he was better and his Mother went to the Hospital Cafeteria to eat. While there the Nurse came and told her little [2826] was worse.

His mother went back to the room. She said he vomited coffee ground material and expired. The final diagnosis was Bulbar Polio.

I tried to get records at Miami Valley Hospital, but records of all patients for the last quarter of 1942 are missing. The last entry was September 4, 1942. Hospital people don’t know what happened.

The child had been entirely well before Saturday. He did not have a paralysis as noted by Mr. Kahn. I think that the paralysis referred to may have been with his final illness.

The Parents did not get to try any of Mr. Cayce’s suggested treatment as the telegram and letter came after they had left for Dayton and they didn’t see them until they returned home after the boy’s death.

They were stunned by the accurate diagnosis even to the temperature of 103 at the time of the reading. The only difference in the reading was that Mr. Cayce stated the disease to be due to Strept. This could be true. The tests for Polio were negative. Strept could cause the same symptoms. Strept illnesses then were rapidly fatal, lasting only a few days.

The wrong Sulfa drug referred to Mr. Kahn, could well mean that Sulfa Pyridine instead of Sulfadiazine should have been used. Sulfa Pyridine was more effective in Strept. infections. It saved my life - when I developed a blood stream infection from a strept infection developed from a needle prick in a finger while assisting in Surgery on an infected abdomen.

Mrs. Turner asked if there were any other children? Little [2826] had a Sister who was a year and a half old when he died, she was born 6/7/41. Several years later they had twin girls and they died when they were two and three days old, then another child was born 11/1/49 she was a premy and no one thought she would make it but make it she did and will be a Sophomore in college this fall and we are proud of her as we are Godparents.

Little [2826]‘s Father has never gotten over his death. He was their only son, and a wonderful boy.

Dr. […] did not know Mr. Cayce. At the time of little [2826]‘s illness Dr. […] was, I believe, in Washington with Mr. Kahn on a business venture. Mrs. […] called her husband and told him that little [2826] was ill and she thought he should come home. She said nothing else. Mr. Kahn suggested a reading from Mr. Cayce. Dr. […] was mad that he should suggest a thing like this - but finally agreed to do so.

Mr. Kahn called Mr. Cayce and gave him the boy’s name - [2826] and where he was - Gibbons Hospital - nothing else. Dr. […] didn’t know Mr. Cayce.
