This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 27th day of October, 1942, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [2834], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book THERE IS A RIVER.

Born August 15, 1906, in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Time of Reading 3:40 to 4:20 P. M. Eastern War Time. New York City.

1. GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: (In going back over years from the present - ” - ‘41 - period of opportunity - ‘40 - ‘37 - anxieties - expectancies - ‘28 - yes, accomplishments - ” etc., on back to birth date.)

3. Yes, we are given the records here of that entity now known as or called [2834].

4. In giving the interpretations of the abilities, the capacities, the characteristics of this entity from the records here, there is much to choose from. For, the entity is in that realm of individual entities who have brought much of weal and woe in the experience of man in the earth.

5. Thus there are the needs that this entity, more than the usual, choose its ideal and its purposes in the earth. For these will be the basis on which the entity may make for such awarenesses as to be able to bring about an unfoldment of the character of purpose the entity may choose, if the will and the mind is put to same.

6. We choose these phases of the entity’s activity and ability, then, with the desire and purpose that this information may be a helpful experience for the entity; enabling the entity to better fulfil those purposes for which it entered this particular sojourn.

7. Know, first, that each soul is a manifestation of an influence in the earth that we may call a son of God. Thus there are the needs that each soul recognize the relationship it bears with that force or power in the earth, and behave in such a manner as to be worthy of that grace given by the Creative Force.

8. In choosing those phases of the entity’s influence, in this particular entity we find same somewhat complex; and the activities in manifestation have so altered purposes that those influences called astrological have little bearing on this entity’s purpose.

9. For, as we have indicated, the entity is one of such strong mind, such individuality, as to have altered much of that as would commonly be surmised from the position of the planetary forces in this particular universe influencing the entity’s activities.

10. But that the entity is a part of a universal consciousness is a fact. Thus it has its influence, and is influenced by such to the degree that these find expressions in the manner in which the entity thinks and acts towards others, towards conditions, and towards circumstance in its experience in the earth.

11. We find in Mercury the high mental abilities; mind, reason, purpose, and goals set. In most any phase of activity the entity would choose, success might be attained or accomplished; dependent upon what the entity sets as its ideal as to what is meant or implied by success.

12. In Jupiter we find one having a great influence upon the lives, the experiences, the activities of others, - by choices made by the entity; and rarely fully conscious of how far-reaching such choices may be, in the experience of others.

13. The entity is one naturally of a literary turn. This attainment, however, is from a mental and spiritual aspect rather than from self’s own accomplishment in such, thus far; though one that may have great influence upon the lives and experiences of others through these channels, dependent upon the choice of the entity.

14. One that demands sincerity, hard work, and is a driver of those about self; yet aware of the feelings, of the faults and of the abilities of others. Thus the entity may be considered as one not so much a great leader as one who may accomplish much, as may have been determined by self or by the combined efforts of others.

15. We find in Venus the appreciation of purpose, of beauty, of love. Hence the entity is tenderhearted. Make same long-suffering also, in the spirit of tolerance, of faith, of patience. For these be those things that take hold upon the spirit and purpose for which a work may be done, rather than the material or fame-success of a thing or condition.

16. As to the appearances in the earth, - these have been varied, and - as indicated - the entity’s activities have been such as would be questioned, if judged from material standards, as to the spiritual and mental standards through which growth has come to the soul-entity.

17. This entity, then, may be put among those who MUST succeed, whether in doing good or in doing evil.

18. Before this the entity was in the Scotch land, in the name Watt Scott, the close relation to Sir Walter Scott; gaining much from those spiritual purposes of that entity.

19. In the experience there was much questioning of the activities, it might be said, as a shepherd, as a tiller of soil, as one who partook of many things that others might say didn’t belong to the entity.

20. Yet these characteristics, spiritualized, may be brought to mean much in the experience of man.

21. This may cause questionings in self, in others. CAN good come out of evil?

22. The Son, the Savior, the Lord, was crucified unjustly, - materially; but spiritually He paid the price for all.

23. In the experience then, spiritually the entity gained, while oft questioned materially. The results in the experience brought opportunities to man that have been, are, something of the music of the spheres.

24. Then, in the present, - forget not the Lord and all His benefits. In thy interpretation of the spirituality of thy successes, forget not the source from whence life, consciousness, awareness, comes.

25. Before that the entity was in the Roman land, during those periods when there were the expansions being made in that empire; during the period when the Master walked in the earth.

26. As a keeper of the guard in those periods following the entrance into those activities of His followers, and the persecution of same, the entity came in contact with the leaders, the speakers, the ministers for the cause; and saw Peter released from prison.

27. And this brought that consternation, that awareness of a deeper purpose in the activities of the entity in that period of sojourn.

28. The embracing of the principles and the recall to activity in the Roman province, where again there were those contacts with the leaders, brought into the experience those influences that might sometimes confuse; yet the necessity of purposefulness becomes more apparent in the present experience of the entity.

29. Then the name was Partapathr.

30. Before that the entity was in the Grecian land, when there were those rumors of those activities in the Holy Land, as called; when the son of David was made king; when those ships of Hiram, the ships of the new King began to ply the waters about the land.

31. The entity then joined in those activities, that there might be the adventure of seeing, of knowing, of experiencing the stories or tales that had become as hearsay to that awakening people.

32. The entity became as one favored, eventually, in the court of Solomon, and thus first understood those deeper intents and purposes that must prompt individual activities in material adventures in relationship with things, conditions, experiences.

33. Then the entity was gifted in making those pronouncements, those announcements of the King during portions of Solomon’s reign.

34. The name then was Persus. In that experience we find there was the development of those things that are innately a part of the present consciousness of the entity; character, strength of body, of mind, the interest the entity experiences in all those influences that develop body; athletics, food values for body building, those things for mind building. All of these are a part of the consciousness from that experience.

35. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land, during those periods when there were those attempts by the varied groups to induce the King and those in authority to bring the Priest back into activity.

36. The entity was of the councillors who were appealed to by the Natives that had been in rebellion, and aided in correlating with the Atlanteans as well as the general populace the reasons FOR the recall; acting in that capacity as the interpreter to the common peoples and to those set in authority through the King’s own activity.

37. The name then was These-El-Ar-An.

38. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, then, - these depend upon the ideals chosen. The power, the mind, the might lies within thine own self. Ye HAVE been blessed, ye may be again - in thy judgments.

39. Let not self, - as an egotist, or for selfish purposes of any of those things that undermine principle, - put thee in the position of neglecting thy opportunities to do good.

40. Have not only thy ideal materially but thy ideal spiritually, thy ideal mentally.

41. Then study to show thyself approved unto the God thou choosest; keeping self unspotted from condemnation of others.

42. Know from Whom, thy blessings come. In self be sure, through thy knowledge of thy adherence to the will, the law, the purpose of thy Creator.

43. Thus may ye show thyself approved unto God, and a workman not ashamed.

44. We are through for the present.

R1. 1/17/43 Mr. [2834]‘s letter to EC:

Mr. Edgar Cayce: Virginia Beach Virginia

Dear Mr. Cayce:

This letter is to ask you whether I can secure from you a Physical Reading and a Life Reading [See 2890-1, 2890-2] for my son [2890], now aged ten and born in New York City on October 5th, 1932? He can be found every night from six o’clock on at our house at the above address. I should like the Physical Reading first. Assuming that this will be possible at some time, and while there is no emergency Mrs. […] and I hope it will not be too long, I am enclosing my check to cover your usual fee as I remember it to be.

If there are any other facts that you need, please write and ask us for them. Unfortunately I have not official form here now, but please consider my signature on the application in my own case to be applicable also in […]‘s.

Incidentally, I am looking forward with some curiosity to Tom’s Thomas Sugrue] comments on the Life Reading you gave me. I have read it over a number of times and found it full of interest and valuable advice on the spiritual side in particular. The previous incarnations of this entity on this plane, to use the language of your reading, certainly contain elements which I can recognize as being still active in the present. Incidentally, the only thing I am wondering about a bit is the basis on which these particular incarnations were selected for discussion. As the most important for the present to meditate upon? As most representative? Probably you cannot answer such a question yourself, and I certainly do not want to ask you to use your valuable time in trying to answer them.

Naturally, too, I cannot be sure that in requesting these readings for my son I am not preempting time better devoted to some more important questions. I can only say that I think good will come of them - the readings - and that they are requested in a spirit of sincerity and belief.

R4. 6/4/43 [2834]‘s letter to EC:

Mr. Edgar Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment Virginia Beach, Virginia Dear Mr. Cayce:

I have been asked by various people in the government and outside it to undertake a mission in the near future to China. Before I go, I should like to get a physical reading from you with particular reference to the question as to whether there is any condition which would prevent my fulfilling this mission successfully, and if there is whether there is anything I can do about it. If you will let me know at what time such a reading could be scheduled I would be glad to advise you where I shall be.

The general purpose of this mission is to improve the future of cultural relations as they affect books between this country and China in the years after the war. I am wondering whether I could also secure a reading on this mission, with particular reference to what faults or pitfalls to be most on guard against and what ways I can be most likely to be of service both to Americans and Chinese. Since I know your schedule is very crowded, I do not wish to ask for this second reading if it would likely impose on you. If it should be possible, I should like opportunity to submit some more details and questions. The mission seems an important one to me, not only for my own sake but for the general future of the world, and I should like to do the best job I can with it.

Mr. Edgar Cayce Association for Research & Enlightenment Virginia Beach, Virginia

Dear Mr. Cayce:

As things now stand, I expect to be still in this country on August third. Between 10:30 and 11:30 and between 3:30 and 4:30 I shall make it a point to be in my office. Unfortunately pressure of my final preparations for the trip to China is very great and I shall probably be hard at work in both cases. Nevertheless I shall bear in mind the readings which are going on and strive to do my best to take some time for quiet and reflection.

With regard to the physical reading, what I wish to know is what the general physical conditions are and whether there is any condition present which would preclude my having the strength and stamina to complete my mission satisfactorily. With regard to the other reading on the mission itself I should like particularly to know the following things:

1. What attitude of mind and spiritual approach will best serve the success of the mission (which has to do with increasing the interchange of books and writing between China and this country)?

2. What pitfalls should I be most careful about?

3. What people, or types of people, are most likely to be valuable when I am in China?

Perhaps I should explain in more detail that the purpose of this trip is to lay the foundations for future book relations between American and China, and to learn what I can about the book needs of the Chinese in the technical field, educational field, and the general field; to learn what I can also about China’s library needs; to lay the foundation stones for a new copyright treaty; and to find ways immediately of increasing the flow of Chinese writing out of China into this country.

I suppose that what I should most like to know is something about the destiny of the Chinese during the next twenty years

• whether they are likely to take a more democratic turn or a more authoritarian turn. It would make a great deal of difference to the conduct of the mission if I knew the general trend of this development. Naturally this is not the kind of question which I think should be asked of a reading of this sort, and perhaps it would be fairer to ask whether it would be wiser to devote more time to Government officials and figures or to private writers and publishers and the Chinese intelligentsia.

I enclose with this letter my check.
