This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 8th day of January, 1943, in accordance with request made by the sister - […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Miss [1703].

Bed #2, Room 290, Time of Reading Osteopathic Hospital, 10:55 to 11:00 A. M. Eastern War Time. Detroit, Mich.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes.

3. As we find, while the body is responding somewhat, there is still much to be desired.

4. We find that the acute conditions arise from an obstruction or a telescoping in a portion of the upper part of jejunum, and this is a complication with a liver and kidney circulation.

5. There may be the prevention of operative measures, as we find, if there will be the wet heat applied along the spine before there is the attempt to relax and stimulate the circulation through these areas. This, as we find, may prevent the necessity of operative measures. Without the keeping of this area in better circulation, operative measures will be required.

6. These are the suggestions, then:

7. In the area from the 2nd and 3rd to the 9th dorsal, apply wet heat for at least twenty minutes before the osteopathic manipulations and adjustments are made. With such adjustments, to be sure, coordinate the cervical and the lumbar circulation with the corrections made in the dorsal area.

9. (Q) What produced this telescoping in the jejunum? (A) As indicated, a disturbance in liver-kidney circulation.

10. (Q) Why did she improve once? (A) Because the correct applications were made! But, as just given, it will be necessary to keep these in the directions indicated. And these may be done the more easily in the manner suggested.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Friday evening your letter with slip for the Book was here when I got in, for my supper, at 9:00 p.m., having been with Miss […] to show your telegram to her osteopathic doctor, known to be “A MAN OF God, if ever there was one,” to quote Miss […] and a doctor open to study subconscious and super-conscious states, phenomena, and, so, a doctor she could feel would not at once repudiate as no good a Reading such as you reported on Mrs. [2878] his patient. He did not know of the Reading, and as I reported, only Miss […], Mrs. [2878] and myself knew of it from this end, except the telegraph and telephone operators. Miss […] does not know if her sister, however, may have told of the Reading being requested to another friend who is close to her. I thank you for your personal letter to me. But, as I want to get this letter off to you, I will not go into details as to a report on the reaction to your book. You want me to tell how it looks to me it will impress the public, and the fact that I rushed it miles across the city so Mrs. [2878] could read it, since […] told me the doctors were baffled as to what was causing the condition, shows that I thought it convincing enough for her to read and consider.

As you may have “gotten” in your sleep for the Reading, an operation was set for yesterday noon; it seems to have been set in the time between my first night letter to you and the second, with also a straight telegram, sent the next evening. When […] phoned me, late in the evening, 9:30, 1-7-‘43 when I got home from evening school, that you wanted the bed and room definite, I did all I could to rush that data to you. I also asked, “Since the operation is already scheduled, to be performed, do you still want a Reading by Mr. Cayce?” She said that such was her sister’s request.

Before going further, I want to state that I do not know Mrs. [2878] very well, but from acquaintance with [her sister], I believe they are very sincere and devoted to prayer and right motives, as I trust that I, myself, am. Mrs. […] and […] have delved into astrology and spiritualism for years. Mrs. [2878] has a group for such purposes and one, a psychic, has in years past, said Mrs. [2878] should not have an operation, but spiritual healing, which was given. Doctors told her, however, years ago, she should be operated upon. When the bloat went down last spring, the psychic took credit for her having healed her, spiritually. The osteopathic doctor, so […] says, could not account for the passing of the water, as she was not being treated as a patient by anyone then. This osteopathic doctor, however, when she went under observation recently, was insistent that she had gone far enough with trying spiritual healing; while he believes we are to study and learn, we, as a race, have not yet evolved enough to function that way enough to trust it completely, as it seems to have been proven in her case. It seems Mrs. [2878] herself, was at least ready to submit to an operation, as the burden of the bloat was so bad, and Miss […] commented, “She is a good sport to have it,” when I said Friday, upon reading your telegram, that it was too bad the operation was scheduled for the next day, for now, with your telegram to prevent it, it was getting us all in a jam.

As Miss […] lives miles from me, we both drove across the city to the office of this osteopathic doctor; I waited in the car till cold, about a half hour, then stood in the lobby. Previous to going to see him, Miss […] was quite determined to postpone the operation, as Mrs. [2878] was not critically ill. However, she wanted the doctor to see if the “…telegram made sense and checked with the X-Ray pictures.” MUCH examination has been made recently by the doctors and surgeon. Miss […], much as she esteems this osteopathic doctor for his spiritual qualities and professional ability and wisdom, was, before going to see me, determined to even go over his head and postpone the operation, to try your treatments; for as she said, an operation can always be had. So, the background was favorable for trying the Reading.

When Miss […] came out from this doctor’s office an hour later, Friday about 6:00 P.M., she said that doctor had called the surgeon to again consider the X-ray pictures in the light of your telegram. The osteopathic doctor seems not to have ridiculed […] at all for getting a Reading from you. I have not had her tell me just how she presented it to him; however she said he was very willing to check with your Reading. But, the fact that there was an obstruction or telescoping of the intestines did NOT check at all with the X-ray pictures, which were taken when colored food was eaten, and the food went on through to their satisfaction that there was nothing wrong in the intestines. There was some other error in the telegram, but I told Miss […] that may have been in transmitting the telegram. The doctor was anxious to have the typed Reading, and Miss […] was to take it, if it arrived, Saturday a.m.

From the doctor’s office, I drove us both, so […] could talk, to the hospital, quite a distance on. When she told me that the doctor advised she do not show the telegram to Mrs. [2878] I remarked that, instead of keeping any disturbing news from [2878] she would know it, if not shown the telegram, as […] had telephoned the hospital and told [2878] she had “a most extraordinary telegram.” I said, after all it is [2878]‘s body and as she requested the Reading after reading your book, “There is a River,” she should make the decision. […] phoned from the hospital to the doctor and said she felt, upon thinking it over, that [2878] better be shown the telegram, and she reported to me that he agreed so, too.

I waited in the lobby of the hospital a long time and when […] came to drive on, she had your book and said, “I am SO happy, for [2878] intends to go on with the operation.” I said that as I sat there in the lobby, I thought how often we wish we could live our lives over, and in this case it would seem [2878] could live over this portion, meaning she could follow the Reading and have the operation later.

[…] left me at the osteopathic doctor’s office at 8:10 p.m. Friday, intending to leave the book with him, to read in if he could and cared to do so, Friday night, to get all he could about the Readings as given in “There is a River.”

I did not hear from Miss […] or the [2878] operation all day Saturday, wondering and wondering if the air-special-delivery typed copy of the Reading arrived at […]‘s home before she left Saturday morning for the hospital, miles away. She was to phone me late in the evening, but no call came. At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, about an hour ago, she phoned and talked briefly. She had another long conference with the osteopathic doctor after I left her Friday evening. The typed Reading had not come even when she got home late Saturday morning, and her elderly mother, who knows nothing about the contents of these mysterious telegrams being phoned and delivered to the house, as she trusts […] quite completely, (and she had told her mother it was nothing to disturb her or even know about, now…). Her mother got the air-special from the mail box this a.m. and saw foot-prints in the snow which fell after dark Saturday evening; she had not yet opened it when she phoned me. So, I told […] if she wanted to give this typed reading back to me I would come get it and give her $20.00 for it, as I had lots of remorse, feeling I had not played quite square with the Association for Research and Enlightenment in asking for a Reading in that second telegram and night letter, knowing, as I did, that an operation was dated, which probably would not be called off in any event, no matter what the Reading stated, as it was not giving any chance for the Reading to be tried out if it called for no operation, offering no chance for “research” or “enlightenment.” I said it so sternly that […] was quite disturbed.

Her reply was, “But, it (meaning the Reading and the operation, contrary to the Reading) is going to do just that!

I would not think of keeping this from the doctors, as they are very sincere and open minded, and if this man (Mr. Cayce) is giving out such very wrong readings, as it is proven in this case of my sister’s, it is time some one is checking on him and his Readings. They are wanting this typed Reading, even now that the operation is over, to see how much further wrong the Reading is from their findings in the abdominal cavity. They do not know your name, […] and I shall do all I can to protect you, for you were trying to help us; but we all prayed for guidance, and now I am taking the Reading, that it can be read and perhaps it is so we who study the psychic will trust to God and get guidance from him.” (or words to that effect.) I agreed that it was best, of course, to get our contact direct from our own Soul, if possible, rather than through others. On the return to the doctor’s office, […] had asked me if I thought it possible Mr. Cayce in his Reading may have “read” an obstruction in the intestines from the records in the subconscious mind of [2878] a condition not now present, but something wrong in the past that she had now overcome. I replied that so far as I was informed, that was the one place Mr. Cayce seemed to be correct, as doctors agreed his reports anatomically were accurate; they could not accept this treatments.

Well, to continue what […] just told me over the phone, the doctors took a lady friend into the operating room, as a witness of their findings. She is one of that group that study astrology, spiritualism, etc., so keenly did they want to play square with the patient, the sister, and the Reading from Mr. Cayce. The report to me is that the doctors’ estimate as to the probable trouble was right, and not the Reading: - they removed the womb, which was hardened. A bag of 2 3/4 gallons of liquid was around one of the ovaries. the other ovary was all right. The fallopian tube was stretched till it was like a worn-out rubber band. Nothing whatever was discovered wrong with the intestines, liver, or other organs.

So, Mr. Cayce, that is the best that I can report at the moment. I asked Miss […] if the doctors had spoken of a lawsuit, and she said she did not know what they might do, but they were much concerned with such a telegram that was NOT as they found the intestines; of course, not knowing what you may have said in the Reading about ovary, tube, or uterus, there may not be enough in the typed Reading to concern them seriously, to bother to have “the law on us.” But […] did say that the bag and tube were such that they were about to break and that no doubt would have caused her sister’s death, had she delayed many more days, to say nothing of having pressures such as osteopathic treatments such as your telegram directed. The doctors said that no doubt the water from the cyst drained out through the tube last spring, but it had become too much deteriorated to function at all; also the womb too much petrified to act; or words that meant that to me. I shall probably write to correct any misstatements in this when it has been read, so that I shall be correcting all I can the false statements and impressions expressed in this letter.

I am offering no comments herein, as I want to hold off judgment till evidence is all in, granted that these doctors withhold nothing, but lay the cards all on the table, if they are concerned enough to “call me on the carpet.” I never met any of the doctors. I told […] on our way from the hospital back to the doctors’ office Friday evening that I had a nurse-friend living with me once, and I learned it was creditable to be a clever liar on her part, as part of her nurse’s training.

So, all we can do is leave this case and its aftermath in the Hands of he Almighty, and trust that the Reading will, after all is done, if it is done honestly and with good motive, lead us into a more accurate way of life, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Yesterday I mailed you air-special delivery four sheets, reporting on the outcome of the operation performed upon Mrs. [2878] at the Osteopathic Hospital. Only your telegram had reached here previous to the operation. This telegram stated to prevent operation with hot wet applications and osteopathic treatment in a certain place, if I recall it correctly, and the difficulty was in the jejunum, which was obstructed or telescoped. Upon operating, the doctors found no such condition. Your telegram also stated other organs not operating correctly, but the doctors operating found them in good condition. It is possible they could not tell, however, whether these organs were functioning all right.

Since the findings in your Reading and in their operation vary so decidedly, it seems to me a good thing to check, to see if the body of Mrs. [2878] was the one in the bed and room number “suggested” to you when you Read. Therefore, I am sending copies of the night messages and the straight telegram that Miss […] [[2878]‘s sister] asked me to compose, and telephone the telegrams to you. Also, if the location of the Osteopathic Hospital was transmitted correctly.

Since you wired Miss […] to verify the exact location of Mrs. [2878] as of Friday a.m., January 8, 1943, 10:30 - 11:30 Eastern War Time, it seems advisable before your Reading is condemned as utterly bad, to check both her location - she might, at the last (She told me she was more comfortable sitting, so may have been in a chair and you, therefore, went to a person IN BED in that same room. Doctors might find your Reading “fitting” another person’s condition.), have gone to another bed or/and room, in which case you would have had under observation another person in the bed and room number indicated in my telegrams.

I sent the straight telegram Thursday evening, after phoning the night message, as I wanted to be sure the bed and room number was delivered to you before 10:30 a.m.; also as a check on the numbers, as the bed and room numbers in both should be alike; namely, Bed Number two, Room 290. Perhaps this is stated on your typed reading, so it can be checked. Perhaps, also, a check can be made on the exact location of Mrs. [2878] during this one-hour period Friday a.m.

Have yours of the 10th - thank you for same, this I suppose where it must be set down the information attempted was wrong, we will try and study same and see if can find the error of the way, just hope there will be no trouble for you in your attempt to try and help.

Let me know and - when you have time and feel like it, let me know what you think of the book, but beleive your answer is demonstrated better words may do. How ever it seems to have failed you.

Dear Miss [1703]

Thank you for yours of the 11th - as wrote you yesterday I had accepted this as one where something had interfered. Of course there is the possibility, as suggested there was some other one that was read, but that would not or could not be verified for a surety. I know that in trying to be as generous and as helpful as possible did not conform to all the information has insisted that we do - that may be the failure - should never take one for a person that is able to ask for reading themselves unless they themselves ask that has been told us more than once. But the emergency and all made me anxious and just wished to help if possible. And here we are - am sorry but nothing that can do, just hope Mrs. [2878] is getting along alright - glad the suggestions was not thought of and that she is better I do hope.
