This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 20th day of April, 1944, in accordance with request made by the husband - Mr. [419], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 4:20 to 4:25 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, Ky.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, they’ll soon have a lot more stirring around here than in the present!
-
As we find there are disorders. These as we find are temporary.
-
There needs to be a thorough relaxing of this body osteopathically. For the tensions, the fears because of the conditions existent have caused a congestion of the centers along the sympathetic nervous system; causing contractions of the voluntary muscular forces. Thus the feeling of being congested.
-
If these areas are treated it will relieve the tension and aid in the periods for delivery.
-
This should be now very soon, before the 28th. There should be at least three to four osteopathic relaxations given the body before then, and a little heat, and we will find better conditions.
-
Also we would give a light massage with an equal combination of Mutton Tallow (melted), Spirits of Turpentine and Spirits of Camphor, along the spine; especially in the areas of the 9th dorsal, the brachial center or the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th dorsal, the 3rd cervical and at the base of brain - along the areas of the mastoid, the point of the chin, and the face and head - more the massage than the use of the properties, but do use these with the massage.
-
There should not be had too much trouble with delivery.
-
Do that.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is this a paralysis in face? (A) Just read what has been given. It is fear and it is congestion in the sympathetic nervous system.
-
(Q) Is the baby alright? (A) As just indicated, there should be normalcy in the delivery.
-
We are through with this Reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 4/27/44 Husband’s wire: “[2921] has nine and one-quarter (9 1/4) pound son born at 12:02 A.M. this morning. Both doing OK.”
R2. 5/11/44 Husband [419]‘s letter:
[2921] began to feel bad about this time [3/44] and she became so large that her stomach has broken all over with bad scars then to cap it all off [2921] was taken with that paralyses [paralysis?] which started in her left jaw and kept extending until it got over almost all of her face.
That is when I wired for the reading. Sorry that Western Union got it all gummed up and caused you so much trouble to find out who it was.
When we heard from it I tried to get Dr. Beard and she was out of town and would not be back until some time this month.
I got the stuff to make the mixture and then I tried to recall and [all] the knowledge that I ever possessed about osteopathy [His uncle had been an osteopath!] and I went to work.
I got in four treatments before the fireworks started.
[2921] was taken sick about 3:00 A.M. on the 26th of April with the water breaking and pains about every 5 minutes apart.
We then called the Doctor and the nurse we had engaged and started to the hospital. Now on top of everything else the nurse told us she was sorry that she couldn’t take the case.
We went on to the hospital hoping to get them to get a nurse but try as they would they could not find one.
Finally they did locate one that I might get who was here with some of her people that were stationed at Camp Campbell.
She was staying with a farmer way down in the country so while they were working with [2921] I lit out to find her and after put up such a pleading story she agreed to come but could not get there until 7:00 P.M. so I went back and had to act as nurse until the hospital finally located me another one to come at 3:00 P.M. and stayed until the other nurse came. By the time she got there I was really worn out and all in from working with [2921] and worrying about her as I had to stay right with her as there was nothing else I could do. The hospital was run over at the time and no nurses.
She was in hard labor continuously then but Dr. Stone said that she was not making much progress.
This went on from about 4:00 P.M. until 11:00 P.M. when Dr. Stone finally decided she could go no further and ordered her taken to the operating where he had to perform an operation and take the baby.
By the time this was done [2921] and the baby both were just about gone.
It was only by a skillful surgeon and an act of God that they both pulled through. The baby was born at 12:02 A.M. on the 27th.
They had to take about 18 stitches in [2921] and I had to keep two special nurses with her for two days.
She remained in the hospital for 8 days before I could bring her home.
She has been able to sit up a little for the past three days but can’t do anything and Dr. Stone told her that she would have to take care of herself for a long, long time…
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving the reading for me on [2921].
You don’t know how worried I was when she got in that shape or how pitiful it was to see her especially when she tried to eat.
She is a lot better now but you can still see traces of it when she gets tired or worried. I haven’t found out whether Dr. Beard is back yet or not but I want [2921] to take those treatments as soon as she is able to get out and ride over there.
R3. GD’s note: In the summer and fall of 1947 Mrs. [2921]‘s husband and brother financed her stay at the seashore for a couple of months so that she could be treated, in an effort to prevent her becoming a real neurotic case.
R4. 3/48 While vacationing in Florida she wrote us that she had fallen and broken her spine and spent some time in St. Petersburg Hospital. Dr. F. C. Birdi [N.D.] wrote us: “As you know, she is very high strung and nervous and consequently needs a lot of rest both of body and mind.”
R5. GD’s note: Subsequently, now and then we’d hear of her having hallucinations and the delusion that she was able to give readings like EC did.
R6. 1/15/60 Mrs. [852] [niece of [419]]‘s letter: “[2921]‘s health is still far from good. She is so extremely nervous and has gained so much weight that she is a far cry from the slender individual she was when they married.”
R7. 4/25/60 She taped reports by Mrs. [2921], Mr. [419], and their son in re correctness of and results from 2921-2.
R8. 7/27/60 Husband [419] died with a heart attack.
R9. 12/6/60 Mr. [419]‘s niece [852]‘s letter: “Things have been in such an unsettled condition at home ever since [419]‘s passing that the last weekend in October I decided we all needed a change of scenery, so we took a trip… We came home to find [2921] with partial paralysis in both legs from the waist down, in a wheel chair, so you can well imagine what we have been through since then. […] [her brother] flew up for three days with the expectation of carrying her over to a specialist in Nashville; but, she decided to try a local doctor, who, so far, has seemed to do wonders for her. At least she is now able to walk a short distance without her crutches and can get about the house with the aid of them.”
R10. 3/5/61 She died in her sleep. Her neck was turned sideways and they couldn’t straighten it at the funeral home.
R11. 5/61 GD’s note: All this detail is given simply because I do not believe the treatment was ever followed, in either reading, completely, and the first reading predicted much trouble later if the corrections were not made. No doubt the treatments she did take prolonged her life for many years and enabled her to deliver a normal baby son on 4/27/44.
