This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office, of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 15th day of April, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self through mother - Mrs. […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by THERE IS A RIVER, and […].
[Edgar Cayce; Mrs. Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 10:55 to 11:15 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, Calif.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body.
-
As we find, there are disturbing conditions; and these may be materially aided. We find that these arise from what were minor injuries at the time to the cerebrospinal system; so that segments along the spine were so jammed as to prevent the normal functioning of impulses through the coordinating of sensory system and the central nervous system.
-
This in the present has gradually grown to be of such natures as to cause a pressure in the brain reflexes, and a character of lesion is forming there.
-
As to whether this may respond in its entirety will depend not only upon the correcting of the disturbance but upon the response the body and mind may make to those administrations.
-
The rest of the general body-force and mind reactions we find good.
-
These conditions exist, we find, in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th cervical, in the 9th dorsal, and in the lumbar axis. These reactions to the locomotory centers, from which these reflexes react to the superficial circulation and to the impulses of the nerve forces, cause the arm and the lower limb - upon the opposite side from where the lesions exist in the spine - to become lacking in impulse for control by the voluntary nerve centers.
-
As we find, if there is to be an adjustment, there will be required rather a series of treatments, - and all of the corrections should not be attempted at once. But through mechanical means, preferably osteopathically, we would make adjustments in the cervical, in the dorsal, and the lumbar area. It will be found that these can be much more easily made if there is first the relaxing of the body with wet heat, as of heavy toweling wrung out of hot water and applied to the areas just before the adjustments are attempted.
-
First we would have a series of, say, twelve adjustments - osteopathically given. DO NOT attempt to make ADJUSTMENTS until at least six or eight treatments have been given to relax the body.
-
After the twelfth treatment, then leave these off a period of some two or three weeks.
-
Then have another series, about twice each week, for twelve to fifteen adjustments.
-
And we should find a great change not only in the ability of the body to use self but in the retarding and correcting of the disturbance growing towards, more and more, that of atrophy in nerve plexus and centers.
-
Also daily, even throughout the period of rest from the osteopathic treatments, we would massage the body with Peanut Oil, when ready to retire. Massage from the base of the brain to the end of the spine. We find this will aid, and will contribute to the abilities of the osteopathic corrective measures to have greater benefits. In giving the massage there should not be the attempt to make any adjustments, but pouring the oil in an open container - as a saucer - dip the fingers in same and gently massage, in a rotary motion (and rather deep), from the base of brain to the end of the spine. Take at least thirty minutes or more to do this thoroughly, - prayerfully, helpfully; and we will find responses.
-
As to the attitude, mentally, spiritually:
-
Know that all healing is from the arousing of the divine within each cell of the body. The attitudes that have been held are helpful, but these conditions are from misplacements of energies. Hence just as it would be necessary to set a broken bone, so it is necessary here to adjust the segments of the spine in such a manner as to release energies and to bring the better normal reactions through the body.
-
After the second series of the osteopathic adjustments, we may then give as to the condition existent in that pressure gradually developing in brain.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) My present brace is very unsatisfactory. Have you any suggestions regarding this? (A) As these treatments progress, this should become less and less necessary, even. But have brace adjusted in the present to suit or to meet the needs.
-
(Q) If these directions are followed, is it indicated that I can get complete use of left hand and foot? (A) This, as indicated, depends upon whether there is the ability to replace those injuries in the reflexes in brain.
-
(Q) What produced these injuries in the beginning, and approximately how long ago? (A) They came from the outside, - a fall, or the like.
Do these things; be persistent, be consistent. EXPECT relief! Keep that in mind. In the application of those things suggested, do it with that purpose - and not merely to see what would happen.
For, all good is of one source. USE that thou hast in hand and more may be given, in faith, in hope, in the ability to be of a service to others.
- We are through for the present.

R1. 5/5/43 Mother’s letter to EC:
…, Calif.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Thank you for your letter and also for the reading you sent under separate cover, for my son [2964].
We were quite interested in this Reading. We are trying to find an Osteopath who will follow the directions, but it does not seem easy. My son is going to see someone to-morrow who will perhaps give him the relaxing treatments, and later perhaps an Osteopath we have contacted will give him the adjustments. She says she will do so, but I rather wonder if she will follow directions, or take him as another patient.
We went to a Chiropractor on receipt of your reading, and gave part of it to him to read, but he would not follow it at all, so we could do nothing then.
We shall be glad to let you know in a few weeks the result of any treatments he takes.
Thank you indeed for your help, and we ask His blessing upon all your work, for we know it is helping those who come to you.
Sincerely yours, […]
R2. 5/11/43 EC’s letter to [2964]‘s mother:
Dear Mrs. […]
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with a Dr. but can furnish reference to any Osteopath from the Kirksville or Philadelphia School, if the man there wishes to know what they think of it, but of course that is their privilege to pooh pooh at it if they like.
Do hope tho you will be able to get the suggestions done for the young man.
With every good wish
Sincerely [signed] Edgar Cayce
R3. 9/16/44 Mother’s letter: “In reply to your letter just received [re. membership renewal], I regret to say I must drop out of the Association for several reasons… Then, too, my son, for whom Mr. Cayce gave a reading, has, through the difficulty of finding just the right person to give the treatments failed to receive help which is most disappointing to me. One Chiropractor left town - just at the time I mentioned the reading - otherwise would have followed the direction given. All others insist upon examining him physically or by machine & following their own plan, so he has received no help from the reading, due of course to conditions over which we have no control here.
While I was quite interested in Mr. Cayce’s work & the organization you have built up there, I am unable to contribute further at present.
I thank you for the Bulletin which I have received for some time, & wish for your work the continued success it deserves.”
Sincerely Yours - Mrs. […]
Background
Background
B1. 3/7/43 Letter from mother: “[2964] is most interested himself, but thinks that I can put his case before you better, perhaps, than he can.
“Sometime around his 12th, 13th or 14th year, he had a minor fall, and also after an earthquake he was thrown against the top of the car, as we travelled over a badly broken road. We think that one of these incidents may be responsible for his condition today. Slowly through the years he has become crippled in his left foot, and his left hand has become so weak that although it is not paralyzed, for he has feeling in it, yet it responds so slowly to impulses sent through the brain, for action.
“His brain is just as active as usual, but as he is a lovable, sensitive soul, it has caused a lot of mental suffering, I am sure.
“He has been under spiritual healers, chiropractors and doctors for years, and also took a course of treatments from a famous masseuse of Pisino Beach. Healers have often said he would find healing some time.
“Doctors say there is no cure, because they cannot find the injury they believe is present in the brain.
“Nearly two years ago a neuro-surgeon from Los Angeles came up here and performed (or took) an encephlegram. He stated that after seeing this he would know just where to operate to relieve the pressure, but afterwards he told us that it was not possible to operate, as it showed nothing new - much to our disappointment.
“We felt that to make up for this disappointment, a trip to his birthplace in Canada would help him, so he went up to British Columbia. He was able to get a minor position in a store at $10 a week, for which we and [2964] were very thankful. However, as there were none of the family left there, he wanted to return to us and his home here, and after a good deal of trouble and expense he returned here a few weeks ago.
“We are very glad that he has been able through the Rehabilitation of Handicapped Persons program, through the schools, to now be taking a bookkeeping course; and he is making good progress in spite of his handicap, for which we do thank God.
“He has certainly learned patience, in the past year or two, but we would deeply appreciate it if you could give him the time to make a reading for him, to find out the cause of the contraction of some of the muscles, which seem to be responsible for this condition, where the trouble is situated, and what to do to relieve it, so that it will be retarded and if possible relieved.
“His foot is out of shape now, and his right shoulder is going out of shape due to the use of a cane the past year or two. He also is having much difficulty in getting a surgical boot, which is not rightly fitted and which hurts him to use it. We have until recently tried to find the cause of the trouble and opposed a brace, but we had to accept it, but it does not fit.
“We have prayed for years for healing for him, and I’ve no doubt he has prayed himself. The thing that puzzles me is why we cannot find healing through some channel - we believe it can come, and think we have faith.
“I know of no doctors who are in sympathy with metaphysics here, but he has been under the care of three chiropractors and if treatments is indicated, one of these might work under directions you might give. Each of these men have given him temporary relief in relaxing the muscles of foot and hand, but there has never been any permanent relief and we have spent a good deal of money to try and find help for him. For it distresses us to see him as he is. I will put the details on another sheet of paper for your convenience.
“[2964], born Nov. 25, 1913, 3:10 a.m., the smaller and last of twins, premature…7 month babies. He weighted 3 1/4 lbs. at birth, weighs now 117 lbs., 5’ 6” tall. Very delicate for first two years, in fact we never thought he would live at all. We lost his brother when he was 20, grew to be tall, well boy, 5’ 11”, & was seldom sick.”
[Questions submitted for First Physical for [2964]]
Q. Cause & relief of contraction of muscles of foot, and for weakness of hand? (Hand trembles most of the time and he keeps it in pocket, or close to body.)
Can healing be brought about by spiritual treatments?
Is the injury on the brain, embedded in the brain, or on the spine?
What is the cause of this injury?
How can relief for this condition be found?
Can I get complete use of left hand and foot if directions are followed?
Is the trembling of left hand and the tightness of left foot due to pressure of a nerve or nerves, or to weakness of certain muscles, with the opposing muscles drawing tight and causing too much tension?
Will massage or light treatments help, and if so where should these be applied.
Will the use of my left hand and leg be improved by use in any event?
If complete healing is impossible shall I have a new brace made?
Have you any suggestions to make in this connections? [Handwritten] My present brace is very unsatisfactory & uncomfortable.
